New Windows 10 update 1709. Information about the use of video card resources has appeared in the task manager. Microsoft Edge improvements

Tonight, Windows 10 users were able to update their operating system. The major cumulative update Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, which is considered the second largest and most important, is already being downloaded to the PCs of users who have not disabled automatic updates. Those users who have disabled this option can update Windows 10 to version 1709 (Redstone 3) via Windows Update or by downloading the MediaCreationTool utility. However, given the fact that all Microsoft updates cause a number of errors, we recommend waiting to update. We suggest you familiarize yourself with the innovations that you will receive, or install the updated OS on a virtual machine.

What has changed in Windows 10 after the Fall Creators Update?

After installing the major cumulative update Fall Creators Update, changes to the system interface are striking. It has become simpler and more usable. The Start menu can now be resized by simply dragging the edges of the frame to the desired position.

To the number of standard user folders, such as “Desktop”, “Video”, “Music”, “Downloads”, “Images”, “Documents”, another directory has been added - “Volume Objects”. This folder will store all three-dimensional objects that the user can create using Paint3D or other programs.

The People application, which few people used in the new operating system, is now located on the taskbar. The purpose of this solution is to make the user’s contacts easier to use.

With the Fall Creators Update, users of the updated OS will have access to files stored in the OneDrive cloud on demand, without first downloading the data to a local drive. This feature was implemented in Windows 8.1, but it was eliminated in the first builds of Windows 10. For unknown reasons, this function was “resurrected”.

With the Fall Creators Update, the new operating system will receive a useful feature - a kind of clipboard for devices running Windows 10, iOS and Android. The essence of the new option comes down to the following points: using a Microsoft account and the Microsoft Apps mobile application, something like a clipboard is configured between a PC and a mobile gadget. Everything that the user did not finish reading on a smartphone, he can finish reading on a computer or tablet.

The standard Microsoft Edge browser will also receive the update. Thus, the user will be able to pin the site to the taskbar, as well as add all open web pages to Favorites at once. And most importantly, you can now import the history of not only the Internet Explorer browser, but also other browsers.

Those who like interesting goodies will love the “Read Aloud” option. The system will be able to read any text correctly, regardless of its size. In this case, you can select the speaker and reading speed.

Previously, we wrote about how to delete the Windows.old folder, which stores data from the old operating system. Since Microsoft only gives a month to test the system and the ability to roll back to an earlier build without losing data, after the 1-month period the Windows.old folder becomes useless and takes up a lot of space on the local disk. With the Fall Creators Update, in Settings, System, you can select the Storage Sense feature and delete the Windows.old folder.

In addition to these innovations, Windows 10 1709 now includes:

  • Displaying information about the video card in the “Performance” tab of the Task Manager;
  • Implemented the ability to switch the processor to energy efficiency mode;
  • Added a panel with emoticons;
  • Improved protection against exploits and ransomware viruses;
  • Now games from the Windows Store will be able to use more system resources - up to 5 GB of RAM, the full power of the video card and up to 6 processor cores;
  • The functionality of Hyper-V has been expanded;
  • The functionality for recovering passwords and PIN codes has been implemented;
  • Added “Mixed Reality Portal”;
  • The “Games” section has been replenished with two subsections: “TruePlay” and “Xbox”;
  • New sections have been added to Settings for Devices and Systems.

The largest Windows 10 update has already caused a wave of dissatisfaction among users. Today we will talk about the main problems and complaints associated with the Fall Creators Update.

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709) was released on October 17, 2017, and as of early November, the update was installed on more than 5% of all devices, making it the fastest-growing Windows update. At the end of November, 20.4% of users had already updated.

The Fall Creators Update includes many new features, such as an updated Fluent Design, an improved input interface, Emoji support, On-Demand Sync for OneDrive files, a new version of the Microsoft Edge browser, and more. But not everyone managed to update without problems: users complain about failures during the installation of FCU and when working with the new version. Of course, this is expected - you cannot do without errors when an update is installed on millions of computers around the world.

In this article, we will focus on the main problems that users encountered with the Fall Creators Update.

Problems installing Fall Creators Update

Usually there is nothing complicated in the Windows 10 update process, but errors are common in the first days of installing a new version. There have been complaints about problems occurring during the installation process, and in some cases the update failed to install at all. This is especially common when using the Media Creation Tool and Update Assistant for installation.

Users are also reporting that the Fall Creators Update fails to install on certain hardware configurations with error 0xc00000bb.

"Many people, including myself, are having difficulty trying to update Windows 10 to the Fall Creators Update. We are getting error 0xc00000bb when we try to reboot to install the FCU. It seems like almost all of us have something in common: ASUS X299 MOB, Samsung NVMe SSD, and many have SATA drives with SSDs,” writes Superbowl user on the ASUS forum.
"[...] something went wrong during the installation. Around 22% my computer rebooted and suddenly the usual loading screen appeared with white text saying: "BlInitialization failed 0xc00000bb" and I don't understand at all , what it is", - describes a similar problem AaronOppedyk on the Microsoft forum.
"Error 0x80070490 - 0x20003 appears when using the Media Creation Tool.", - FabioRJ Windows Central flags an error, appeared when trying to update using the Media Creation Tool.

Official release of all the innovations in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

"I have exactly the same error. Then it reverts to the previous version. I tried updating through Update Assistant and Media Creation Tool - the result is the same," - the previous case is far from the only one, the same problem is described by Kevin Lamarche in Windows Central.

Additionally, some people are upset that they can't install the update through Windows Update.

"I was able to download the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update to my computer, however, when I reboot to complete the installation, a message appears that the system has not been updated." - another post on reddit.

Along with these problems, there are reports that the installation takes more than two hours, and in some cases - more than 10 hours.

Problems with Microsoft Edge in Fall Creators Update

The new version of Windows 10 has significantly improved the version of the Microsoft Edge browser, which has added new features, but, unfortunately, many users have found more problems here than improvements.

"This started when Edge came out. Constant crashes, web page recovery. I have to use Explorer to send this message," laborraine writes on the Microsoft forum.
"[...]on startup, Edge prompts me to restore web pages, stops working completely if I try to go anywhere other than the search home page, and is generally very sluggish," Jon_Don_Juan reports on Reddit.

"[...] in Edge, every time I type something in the address or search bar, everything slows down. Between typing text and it appearing on the screen - noticeable pause, and if the text is longer than 6 characters, then the delay increases even more," - writes KhaotikDream is also on Reddit.
"Updated today with FCU.iso, downloaded and installed all updates/drivers etc and mostly everything works fine. But when I click on an 'external' application link (not in the browser) like chat or email program - nothing happens. The link suddenly opens after about a minute,” reports a Yingpao user.

Driver issues with Fall Creators Update

After installing version 1709, a number of users experienced problems with network adapter and video card drivers. For example, on Reddit, many people write that after installing the update, Windows 10 changes or even resets the monitor’s color profile settings.

“As soon as I installed the update, I noticed that the colors on both monitors had deteriorated significantly. Does anyone have this situation? This is a real problem when editing photos. I have 2 monitors, and they both show different colors,” writes StellarDemon on Reddit.
"Both of my monitors became too dark and the contrast increased. I'm not very good at graphics, but it seemed so to me. And this happened after I installed the Creators Update yesterday," complains rustle_branch on the same resource.

In the PCGaming community on Reddit, many users have also reported that this version of the update resets the RGB color profile set in NVIDIA settings to the default Windows profile (too dark).

There are also complaints about the inability to independently set the monitor screen resolution.

There are separate problems with Razer laptops: after installing Windows 10 Fall Creators Update on them, users say that the keyboard, trackpad and USB ports of the laptops have become useless. Some people note that rebooting or reinstalling drivers fixes this problem, but not always. The good news is that Microsoft is actively working with Razer to fix these bugs faster.

Problems using the Fall Creators Update

While the update is traditionally expected to improve the Windows 10 experience, some users are experiencing problems using it, including bugs in applications, slower performance, missing features and bugs in the user interface.

Missing apps

One of the biggest problems with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update seems to be apps disappearing after installing the update. Users cannot find individual applications in the Start menu or through the Cortana search, and they are not in the general list of programs.

If you search the Microsoft Store, you can find the app, but when you try to install it, you'll see a message that it's already on your PC.

This issue is constantly being reported by users on many forums, including Windows Central and Microsoft. Microsoft itself has already recognized the problem and is working on a solution, but for now it is proposed to use workarounds: “reset” the application or completely remove it from the PC and install it again.

Interface errors

There are also many complaints about Windows 10 user interface errors after the update. For example, in Explorer, the width of the “This PC” folder was changed - a lot of empty space appeared on the left.

Even though the application settings menu has changed a lot, trying to view the list of installed updates results in strange scrollbar behavior.

Some users complain that after right-clicking on the desktop, the context menu appears with no options at all. This happens from time to time or constantly, and restarting the computer in some cases resolves the error.

OneDrive Files On-Demand feature

OneDrive Files On-Demand is a new feature that lets you access all your files stored in the cloud without having to download them to your local drive.

Although OneDrive Files On-Demand should be available in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, after the update it turns out that many people are missing this feature. However, this isn't a bug with OneDrive or Windows 10. It's just that Microsoft has been very slow in rolling out this feature, and it will take some time for it to appear on all devices.

Applications open again after reboot

There are complaints that after turning off or restarting the device, some applications opened in the last session automatically launch again.

Many users call this a bug, but in fact it's intended to be that way: it's a new feature that's supposed to speed up the login process.

Windows 10 already has the ability to let you use your login credentials to complete update setup, and it now extends to normal PC restarts and shutdowns. Additionally, supported applications (such as Chrome, Task Manager, and Windows Registry) will automatically restart when you log in.

The good news is that you can always disable this feature in Settings if you don't need it.

Missing Emoji

Another feature included in the new version is native Emoji support when using the on-screen keyboard. However, after installing the update, users complain that they do not have Emoji.

But this is not a Windows 10 bug. The fact is that Emoji support is currently only available to users in the US. For the rest, Microsoft offers a temporary solution related to changing the keyboard settings after the update.

Performance issues

Although Windows 10 received a number of improvements with the Fall Creators Update, there is evidence that the update does not have the best effect on system performance.

"After upgrading to Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, I have the following problem. After rebooting, if I go to the user profile without waiting a few seconds, the start menu and Cortana search do not work and I see the following errors in the event log: Package Microsoft. "Windows.ShellExperienceHost_10.0.16299.15_neutral_neutral_cw5n1h2txyewy+App was terminated because it took too long to suspend. I did a clean install of the Fall Creators Update from the boot disk I just created, and the problem did not go away. Also, the Edge browser does not work at all." After several attempts, user Digitoxin on Reddit writes that he gave up and reverting to the previous version was the only way to fix this problem.

Other users report that the Fall Creators Update slowed down their computers and increased application launch times.

Problems with Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

“After the update, everything runs slower, shutdown takes longer, and the same happens with the Internet connection,” says ItsKittay (Reddit user).
“It’s gotten to the point where the performance of my device has definitely deteriorated since the last update. I use a top-end Surfacebook with an I7 and a discrete graphics card, and in most applications and even in the “native” components of the operating system, everything is terribly slow,” user ryivan observes noticeable problems performance on your Surface Book with an Intel Core i7 processor and discrete graphics.
"Fall creator update is slowing down my 7 year old PC. I can't even play Battlefield 4 with it. So I went back to RS2, which works best on my computer," writes Windows Central forum member GhostEchelon.

Mobile hotspot not working

The Fall Creators Update for Windows 10 appears to have impacted the mobile hotspot, with users on various forums describing how they are struggling to get it working.

"Mobile hotspot was working fine before the update, and now it suddenly stopped. When I press the button, everything freezes on the connection and nothing else happens," writes decaaring_egg on Reddit.
"Mobile hotspot worked fine on my Wi-Fi connection for about a year before updating... I updated yesterday and now it doesn't work. I click on it and it locks up," a Windows Central forum member reported.

Let's sum it up

The Fall Creators Update is Microsoft's fourth major Windows 10 update with a ton of improvements, and it may seem like the new version has a lot of problems, but that's actually not the case.

Since the release of the first version of Windows 10, it has become noticeable that the number of errors and problems decreases with each update - significant failures occur less and less often.

This indicates that Microsoft has begun releasing more stable versions of Windows 10, but even with this in mind, and the fact that the company blocks installation of updates on incompatible devices, there is a lot of work ahead.

Of course, some users encounter problems when switching to a new version, but this is expected, especially in the first days after the update is released. It should be borne in mind that creating software that will run on hardware of different configurations is not the easiest task.

In this article, we have described the most common problems in the new version, but it is worth noting that most of them are rare, and many situations only apply to devices with certain hardware and software configurations.

How to get Windows 10 update

If you haven't installed version 1709 yet, don't forget that the best way to get a "working" update is to wait for it to be automatically offered through Windows Update. If you rush to update early using the Media Creation Tool or Update Assistant, you risk running into problems.

You can always wait until Microsoft releases some quality updates to make Windows 10 run smoother.

However, if you are eager to update, then at least prepare your PC so that the chances of encountering errors are minimal. It's also a good idea to back up your system, remove conflicting applications, disable unnecessary peripherals in advance, and be prepared to perform a clean installation of the update if something goes wrong.

  9. Windows Defender is enabled by default, but it loads the system quite heavily. You can disable it, but keep in mind that this system does not support older versions of antiviruses and you will need to download the latest ones.
  10. The impression of the system is good, there are bugs, but the developers are constantly working on them.
  11. In the Russian version of the system, the Cortana voice assistant does not work, even if a different primary language is selected.
  12. If you are worried about the safety of your data, then customize the standard settings during installation and create a local account. You can also change your privacy settings at any time. To do this, in the "Privacy" panel (Options - Settings), change the settings to the desired ones. Also in the assembly there is a folder "AntiSpy", which contains a set of anti-spyware programs. With such programs you need to be careful not to delete the necessary files.

The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (Redstone 3) will be released on October 17, 2017. Let's look at the new features, major improvements and changes that users can expect

With update Windows 10 Fall Creators Update(version 1709) there are new features and improvements coming that will make Windows 10 better in many ways. The official release date for the update is October 17, 2017.

In this article we have collected all the new system features that were announced at the Build 2017 developer conference. The overview also adds new features that appeared in the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview builds.

OneDrive Files On Demand feature

Microsoft has announced a new feature of the OneDrive cloud service called “ Files on request" This feature allows you to store displayed files on a cloud server and access them without synchronizing with your local machine. This feature was present in Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 users often asked for it back. A similar feature should soon appear in Dropbox and Google Drive.

It is noteworthy that the new feature will work with the Desktop and Documents folders, and not just the OneDrive folder.

When you try to open a file that is stored on your computer, Windows will download it and then launch it. This feature will be implemented in the operating system kernel and will work with any application, even the command line.

If an application tries to access a file stored in the cloud storage and tries to download it, the user will receive a corresponding notification. You can hide the notification or block file downloading. You can also block future attempts to download files for a specific application. You can manage blocked apps in Settings > Privacy > App-Requested Downloads.

New visual language Fluent Design

Microsoft is developing a new visual language called “Fluent Design”. The new design will focus on 5 main principles: light, depth, material, scale and movement. This is the final implementation of the Project Neon visual language that Microsoft has been developing recently. Fluent Design introduces not only an updated system design, but a new interaction model.

Particular attention will be paid to the use of touch input devices, in particular the stylus, to navigate throughout the operating system. It will make it easier to type queries using the stylus in the Edge browser, scroll through content by moving the stylus, and select text elements. Microsoft is positioning Microsoft Edge as the “best ink-enabled browser.” You can now annotate PDF documents in Edge using your stylus.

Fluent Design will be implemented not only in the system shell interface, but also in almost all built-in applications.

As part of the implementation of the new visual language Fluent Design, the Start menu has been seriously redesigned. The menu now uses the new Acrylic design when transparency is enabled in the settings. The menu size can be changed not only horizontally, but also diagonally. In addition, it is easier to grab the border of the frame for resizing. The transition to “Tablet Mode” has become smoother.

The Action Center also received UI improvements. Notifications are now more clearly separated and therefore more readable. The action center and toast notifications also use the modern Acrylic design.

Handwriting and stylus input

Taking into account the general concept of the Fluent Design System, the developers decided to improve stylus support in Windows to make it easier to navigate throughout the operating system using this tool. We've improved handwriting-to-typewriting in Microsoft Edge, added the ability to scroll through content using the stylus, and made text selection faster. The stylus scrolling feature is currently only available in UWP apps, but Microsoft plans to bring it to desktop (Win32) apps as well.

Microsoft is trying to make Microsoft Edge “the best browser for using a stylus.” Users can now add comments to PDF documents using the stylus as well.

The handwriting panel available on the Windows 10 touch keyboard has received numerous improvements. When you fill out the panel and then lift the stylus away from the screen, the text you type will automatically move to the left side, so you'll always have plenty of space to write.

The text you write will always be shown in the panel, and you can later select it for editing. You can write the correct letters over the recognized word if the panel does not correctly detect your handwriting. Changes can also be made using gestures. You can strike out words using the strikethrough gesture to delete them, and use the join and split gestures to connect words or add a space between them, respectively.

The handwriting panel now provides easy access to emoji and special characters with two new buttons added to the panel. By default, the panel is now placed next to the elements in which you write. Finger handwriting is also disabled, but you can always turn this option back on. This measure was taken to prevent accidental dragging of the panel with your finger when using the stylus.

Now it won't be easy to lose your stylus. You can go to the Settings app > Update & security > Find my stylus and use the “Where's my stylus?” feature. Windows 10 will show the coordinates of your computer or tablet's location when you last used a stylus, making it easier to find your input device.

Windows My People - advanced work with contacts

Microsoft originally planned to introduce the Windows My People feature in Windows 10 Creators Update. However, the developers took more time to implement this functionality, and now it is expected in the Fall Creators Update.

Task Manager will show GPU information

Task Manager now allows you to view graphics resource consumption, as well as CPU, memory, disk, and network resources. Simply open Task Manager and go to the Performance tab.

The "GPU" function shows video memory consumption and the activity of different engines: 3D graphics, copying, encoding and decoding of video information are available. In the Details tab of Task Manager, you can see how much GPU resources each process on the system is consuming.

New touch keyboard

Windows 10 will get a new touch keyboard. It is based on the Microsoft WordFlow keyboard for Windows Phone. The keyboard will also get smart features from SwiftKey, a popular keyboard for iPhone and Android. Recall that SwiftKey was acquired by Microsoft in 2016.

The most noticeable improvement will be support for continuous swipe input. You simply touch one touch key and move your finger to other keys that correspond to the letters of the word. When you lift your finger from the screen, the keyboard will automatically recognize the word and add a space. This technology is used on many popular smartphone keyboards, including SwiftKey and Google Keyboard.

Predictive input technology will also be improved, which automatically suggests phrases, and work with emoticons will be improved - you will no longer have to go to other pages to find the desired emoji, just scroll. The keyboard will be optimized for one-handed typing and will feature a new settings menu that can be accessed by tapping the icon in the top right corner of the keyboard.

With the Fall Creators Update, you'll be able to use dictation to enter text. Just press the microphone button on your keyboard or use the Windows + H shortcut and start speaking phrases. The dictation feature will support voice commands, such as “delete last three words” or “go to end of paragraph.”

The new touch keyboard is part of CShell's new design concept, which features responsive interfaces that can be used on any device, be it smartphones, tablets or computers.

[Simplified] Windows Story Remix is a user-friendly video editor with lots of smart features

Microsoft has announced a new application, “Windows Story Remix,” which allows you to edit videos, add soundtracks and text captions. You can shoot videos on your Android phone, iPhone or Windows Phone and send them to the app. Several people can take part in the creation of a video - Story Remix will automatically create a story from several video materials.

Story Remix also works with photos, allowing you to search for people in images, search for “dogs” in photos, and perform other advanced searches using machine learning technology. When creating a video, you can select an individual as the hero of the video, and Story Remix will automatically create a new video starring that person.

Microsoft has focused on some cool smart features, but you can still edit videos with the usual tools, change filters, add captions, add animation effects, delete clips, rearrange video clips, and select different audio tracks. Automatic and manual functions work in tandem with each other. Add a new soundtrack and Story Remix will automatically rearrange the footage to match the beats of the song.

The Windows Story Remix app supports importing 3D models from the Remix 3D community, also used for Paint 3D. You can freely integrate animated 3D models into your videos. Microsoft will release an API that will allow developers to integrate the Remix 3D community into their applications.

Microsoft announced this at a presentation. In fact, instead of a new Windows Story Remix app, a new Remix feature will be added to the Photos app, which will have more limited capabilities than expected. However, Microsoft may continue to add features over time.

Spotify and iTunes will be available in the Windows Store

Microsoft recently announced Windows 10 S, a special edition of Windows 10 for education that will only allow app installation from the Windows App Store. For another $50, you can upgrade from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro and get the ability to install desktop apps (Win32).

At Build 2017, Microsoft announced that Spotify and iTunes will be available for download in the Windows App Store. Thus, users will be able to fully purchase multimedia content and manage their iPhone and iPad devices. iTunes will use the Project Centennial platform, which allows you to turn regular desktop programs into UWP applications. Microsoft hopes that other developers will also use this technology to port their products.

Microsoft Edge improvements

Microsoft is putting a lot of effort into improving Microsoft Edge. With the Fall Creators Update, the company promises smoother opening and closing of browser tabs without any lag. Microsoft also plans to introduce additional animation effects as part of the transition to Fluent Design throughout the operating system.

Microsoft Edge now lets you bookmark multiple web pages at once. Right-click on a tab and you will see the “Add Tabs to Favorites” option. In this case, all web pages open in the current browser window will be added to Favorites.

Edge has received several small improvements. You can now right-click a site in your Favorites list to edit its URL. Additionally, we've added the ability to import data from Chrome and add the ability to close web pages even if they display a JavaScript dialog. Edge can now read any PDF document out loud.

Microsoft Edge is getting a full-screen experience. Press F11 or click the full screen mode icon in the main browser menu to activate this mode. As such, Redmond has decided to replace the old Shift + Windows + Enter shortcut for bringing up full screen mode in Edge.

The browser now allows you to pin websites to the taskbar, a feature previously supported by Internet Explorer. In Edge, click Settings > Pin Page to Taskbar to add a site icon to a free area of the taskbar. Pinned sites will open in Edge, but you can also pin sites using Google Chrome.

Edge's built-in PDF viewer has also received various improvements. In addition to the ability to add notes with a stylus, users can now fill out interactive forms, save and print them. When viewing long documents in Edge, you can use the table of contents feature. You can also rotate documents and adjust the layout for the best viewing experience. Cortana search now works in PDF files, and you can use an enhanced color palette to highlight text.

The EPUB eBook viewer integrated into Microsoft Edge allows you to add annotations to EPUB books. You can use 4 colors to highlight text, and strikethrough and annotation tools are also available. . You can also now select text, run Cortana search on it, and draw in the e-reader. Your document reading progress and annotations will sync across computers with your Microsoft account.

Cortana has gotten smarter

A new Cortana section has been added to the Settings app. Previously, settings were available in the voice assistant's own interface.

Cortana now requests access to your image library and can automatically recognize event concert posters, prompting you to create an event reminder.

Stylus owners can use the new Lasso tool to highlight events on the screen - Cortana will recognize the date and offer to create a notification.

Power Throttling

Microsoft began experimenting with the Power Throttling feature back in the insider versions of the Creators Update, but the new feature did not make it into the final release. It looks like Microsoft will only add it to the Fall Creators Update.

This feature allows Windows to automatically put the processor into a power-efficient mode while performing background tasks. This measure will save battery power and extend the autonomy of the portable device. Windows will automatically identify applications that are running in the background, such as audio players and other important tasks, and will not reduce the resources allocated to them. Microsoft says the new feature will reduce CPU consumption by 11 percent when the PC is in heavy use.

You can control this function from the battery management slider, which opens by clicking on the battery icon in the system tray. In Power Saving Mode and Balanced Mode, Power Throttling will be enabled. In Maximum Performance mode, the function is disabled.

You can also disable this feature for individual apps by going to Settings > System > Battery. Simply select the application and set the “Managed by Windows” option to “Off” and uncheck the “Reduce background application activity” checkbox.

According to Microsoft, this feature only works with processors that support Intel Speed Shift technology - these are 6th generation Intel Core (Skylake) processors and newer processors. Microsoft plans to expand processor support during the development of the Fall Creators Update.

Windows Mixed Reality Controllers

Microsoft announced motion controllers for Windows Mixed Reality headsets, support for which appeared with the release of the Creators Update. The helmet does not need a separate sensor - the sensors are built into the device itself. You can buy a set of helmet and controller for $399. Acer will be the first manufacturer to ship this kit, but other manufacturers are sure to follow suit.

While Microsoft has primarily focused on HoloLens, the less expensive Windows Mixed Reality headsets look more attractive given the fact that they can work with a wider range of computers.

Protection against ransomware, exploits and other security improvements

The latest Windows feature update will add new security features.

New feature " Controlled folder access" in Windows Defender Security Center allows you to protect folders from unauthorized changes by applications. If an unknown application tries to change files in these folders, the user will receive a warning. This feature allows you to protect data from ransomware and other malicious applications.

To enable this feature, go to Windows Defender Security Center > Virus & Threat Protection > Controlled Folder Access. Set the switch to the "On" position. and select the "Protected folders" and "Allow application access to protected folders" links to configure the function.

Microsoft has also integrated exploit protection features into Windows, borrowed from the specialized EMET tool. These features will be enabled by default and will protect your computer from various types of exploits.

To find this feature, go to Windows Defender Security Center > App & Browser Control > Exploit Protection. You can select Exploit Protection Settings to configure advanced settings.

Microsoft has renamed “Windows Firewall” to “Windows Defender Firewall”. This did not affect the operation of the security component in any way.

The old SMBv1 protocol, which was used to organize the WannaCry ransomware attack, has been removed from the system. The Server Message Block protocol is used for sharing files and printers across local area networks. Windows will now retain the more current SMBv2 and SMBv3 specifications. This measure will protect computers from future attacks on outdated software using exploits.

Microsoft has removed certificates issued by WoSign and StartCom from Windows 10. These Chinese certificate authorities do not meet basic security standards. This measure will protect against fraud using certificates issued with violations.

Windows Defender Application Guard, unfortunately, is only available for enterprise editions of Windows. When an employee browses a website that the organization doesn't trust, Guard uses Hyper-V virtualization technology to create a new instance of the Windows operating system in hardware, running the website in Microsoft Edge on a separate copy of Windows. Even if the browser has been completely hacked, the underlying Windows operating system will still be safe.

Installing Ubuntu, openSUSE and Fedora from the App Store

Microsoft has decided to simplify the installation of Ubuntu by moving the operating system to the WIndows Application Store. The same Ubuntu Bash environment, which can now be installed on Windows 10, will be available in the Store.

Fedora and openSUSE will also be available in the Windows Store, making it easier to set up different Linux environments.

Advanced privacy options

Microsoft has decided to expand the privacy options of Windows 10, continuing the work begun in the Creators Update.

When you set up a new system, you will see a privacy statement from Microsoft with information about what data is collected from your computer. During the installation process, you can also click the “More details” link to view additional information about the meaning of certain privacy settings.

Additionally, Windows Store apps will now be issue an access request to various computer resources, such as the camera, microphone, contacts and calendar. Previously, you would only be prompted when trying to access your location data.

Enterprise editions of Windows 10 users can limit diagnostic data collection to the minimum required according to Windows Analytics.

Linking a smartphone to a computer

A new “Phone” section will appear in the Settings application, which will help you configure the connection between your computer and your mobile device. This feature will allow for deeper integration in the future, but for now it supports the ability to send links from a smartphone to a computer for later viewing.
