Almost any IT professional, and in principle some ordinary owners of a tablet, dream of putting it to good use - connecting it to the system unit so that information is displayed on the tablet as on a regular monitor. The first thing that comes to mind is to connect the tablet to the video card using an HDMI - miniHDMI cable, provided that the tablet and graphics card have these connectors.

After all, an HDMI cable must transmit a digital signal with multimedia data - video, sound, etc. But the problem is that the HDMI connector on the tablet is an output, not an input. Those. It can transmit an image to another device (for example, a monitor or TV), but cannot receive it.

For a very long time I was looking for a way to make a replacement monitor out of a tablet, and believe me, at least as of 2014, technically (at the hardware level) this will not be possible to implement, unless someone tries to solder an HDMI input into a tablet that receives a signal from a video card, or tablet manufacturers will come up with the idea themselves and start making tablets with universal HDMI, capable of both receiving and transmitting signals.

However, there is no need to be upset, because there is good news. You can turn your tablet into a main monitor at the software level. A special program will help the computer recognize the tablet as a monitor. There are three options for how you can use such a “tablet monitor”:

  1. Complete replacement for a standard monitor. Can be used in emergency cases, for example, if a regular monitor is broken.
  2. The tablet can easily turn into an additional monitor to the main monitor. Everything that happens on the monitor can be duplicated on the tablet display.

  1. The tablet screen can become a “continuation” of the main monitor, i.e. for example, on a big screen you can watch a movie, and on a tablet screen you can read correspondence, control any computer program with a mouse and keyboard, read mail, and in general, do absolutely everything that you usually do on a computer.

Installation

We will need a USB cable to connect the tablet to the PC (or you can connect via Wi-Fi), install the program on the computer and on the tablet.

  • We install iDisplay on your computer - you can download it for free for your version of the operating system from the official website. Be sure to restart the computer, otherwise the connection will not take place.
  • Install the application on your tablet from Google Play. It is paid and costs 5 bucks (but if you really want to try the application for free, use 4pda.ru.
  • Launch iDisplay on your computer.
  • Launch the iDisplay application on the tablet. Click on the plus sign to add a “server”, i.e. your PC data (for connecting via Wi-Fi). To connect via USB, connect the USB cable to your computer and tablet, and click the “Connect via USB” button.

  • We are asked to enter the IP, port, and name. The IP address and port number can be viewed in the tray by hovering the mouse over the iDisplay. We copy the data onto the tablet. For the name, enter anything.

  • When everything is ready, click “Add and connect”.

  • Next, if the IP and port are entered correctly, the “iDisplay authorization” window will appear on the computer screen asking whether you want to reject the tablet connection, connect once, or connect automatically every time a request is received from the tablet. I recommend clicking “Always allow”, this way this question will no longer pop up, and the connection will happen automatically.

  • The monitor will go dark for a couple of seconds, blink a little, and calm down. The computer OS desktop will then appear on the tablet.

Settings

This completes the installation, but we need to choose whether the tablet will be used as a main, backup or additional monitor. To do this, in Windows OS, go to the display resolution settings (to open the menu, right-click on the desktop).

Next to the words “Multiple screens”, click on the small triangle. If “Duplicate screens” is selected, the tablet will repeat all the contents of the main monitor, almost like a parrot. The “Extend screens” option will allow you to display different information on two monitors. They will use the same desktop, but can work independently, complementing each other.

Now comes the fun part. If you want the tablet to act as the main monitor, select “Display desktop on only 2”, and then click the Apply button. Then you should open the tray, right-click on the iDisplay icon, select “Settings”, and click on “launch at Windows startup” so that a checkmark appears there.

Now, when you restart the computer and turn off the regular monitor, when the system boots, the program will automatically start, and you just need to connect to this program through your tablet, and the desktop of your OS will appear on the screen of your tablet.

In order not to be unfounded, I conducted an experiment to see whether the tablet would work as a monitor when I turned off the regular monitor, and recorded the result on video. I went into a text editor, opened a browser, watched a video on YouTube, and went to the site where you are reading this article. I connected to the tablet via Wi-Fi, plus a program was turned on to capture video from the screen, so slight delays in the video may be visible. If you connect via USB, the connection will be more stable and the picture will be faster. I apologize in advance for the video quality (maximum 480p).

This monitor has a couple of disadvantages. First, in order to use the tablet screen as a monitor, you need to first install the program, and for this you need to see what you are doing. Those. If the monitor is broken, you need to connect another working one to your computer, install and configure the program, and only then turn off the monitor and use the tablet screen instead. The second drawback is that when you start the system, you need to manually start the connection with the PC each time on the tablet. And thirdly, and most importantly, you need a tablet with a good resolution and a fairly large display. The tablet in the video is a 7-inch, the cheapest Chinese device on the planet with cracked glass. There is very little comfort from using such a “monitor,” but a 9-10-inch tablet is much better suited for such purposes.

Advantages: Touch input from the tablet remains possible; with the “monitor” you can lie down on the sofa, or go to the kitchen, if the Wi-Fi signal is sufficient, and use your computer.

A set of DLNA standards in combination with a set of uPnP network protocols allow you to play video from any compatible device to any device (be it a phone, tablet, computer, media player, HTPC or smart TV). For example, consider a simple option - playing video from an Android phone on a computer running Windows 7.
There is quite a lot of software available to use DLNA, but since it is an open standard, there are conflicts. I will give an example of programs that worked for me personally, as they say, right away.

Android device

We install a free application from the Play Store on the phone: WiTV Samsung. Don't be confused by the word Samsung in the name, the program works on any phone. This program is both a server and a client (that is, it can be both a source of content and a receiver). You don't have to make any settings.

Windows based computer

We install the DLNA client program on the computer: XBMC. By the way, among other things, it is a very good popular media player. In addition, XBMC is available for many other platforms, including Linux, iOS and others. You can download it from the official website xmbc.org. You can also find many special builds on the Internet, but for our task we will use the current official version: at the time of writing this post it is XBMC 12.2 ‘Frodo’.
In order for the program to work not just as a media player, but as a DLNA client, you need to enable only one option in the settings. Go to the menu ‘System’ -> ‘Settings’ -> ‘Services’ -> ‘UPnP’ and check the box next to the item ‘Allow contol of XBMC via UPnP’.

Start video playback

So everything is ready for the test broadcast. Both the computer and phone must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Launch XBMC on your computer. Then WiTV on Android. Select video playback (icon at top left). Then select a video from your phone or one of the presented channels (for example YouTube). When you start playback, the program will ask where to output the video. If everything works correctly, XBMC will appear in the list of devices, and after selecting it, playback will begin on the computer monitor (if the video format is supported).

Phone as a remote control

In addition, a phone running WiTV can be used as an XBMC remote control while watching a video (even if the video was not launched from the phone). To do this, you need to go to video playback, and then select the ‘Player’ item in the drop-down menu (the small icon at the top right is responsible for it). Even if you put your phone into sleep mode, playback will not be interrupted.
Of course, another program is better suited as a full-fledged remote control - Yatse. But in this post I am describing WiTV specifically, since it is a DLNA server without any plugins or additional fees.

For Windows versions earlier than version 10, there is also a way out, but you must have a USB cable and the Google Chrome browser on your computer. So, you need to do the following:

1. First, you need to enable USB debugging on your phone. Open “Settings”, then “For Developers”, then look for and activate the “USB Debugging” function. If you don’t have the “For Developers” item in the settings, you need to go to “About phone” and there tap 7 times on the line “ Build number", after that you will have access to the developer settings, where you can activate USB debugging.

2. After the first step is completed, you need to connect your smartphone to your computer using a USB cable.

4. Launch Vysor and search for available devices. When the smartphone is found, a message will appear on its screen asking for USB debugging, allow it. How to cast an image from your phone to your TV screen

The TVs currently being produced have great functionality and, like computers, are able to receive images from smartphones using Miracast technology. This is very convenient if, for example, you decide to watch photos or videos from your phone on a big screen. Transferring an image to a TV is no more difficult than transferring an image to a computer:

1. Connect the TV to Wi-Fi, go to the menu and select “Screen mirroring” (may be called differently on different models).

2. Connect the smartphone to the same network to which the TV is connected.

Transfer images from phone to PC wirelessly

Setting up a wireless connection should not cause any difficulties for users, but there is one point to remember. The image is transmitted using Miracast technology.

In the case of a phone, this should not be a problem, since most mobile devices are compatible with the above standard, but there may be problems with the computer itself - old laptops and desktop PCs are not equipped with Miracast support, so it will not be possible to display the picture. You can see for yourself that this is indeed the case. If you have a fairly new computer, there should be no problems.

Open the Start menu and search for the Connect app. After launch, the Connect program window will appear with information about waiting for a connection from another device. Now it's time to pick up your smartphone and connect to your computer. Let's look at how to do this.

Enable Screen Sharing in Android or Windows 10 Mobile

First, you need to find the image transfer option in your smartphone. Unfortunately, as is often the case on Android, depending on the manufacturer, some features are moved to other places or eliminated completely. Therefore, this may be a little problematic, however, even if the manufacturer removed this function, it can be restored.

In a pure Android OS, the corresponding option is located along the path “Settings - Display - Send image”. When you enable this feature, a list of devices on the network will appear to which you can transfer the image - select your Windows 10 computer here.

Wireless display on Android

If you cannot find the image transfer function on Android, then you can install a special program that creates a shortcut on the desktop for displaying the image. The program is able to call a function even when the manufacturer has removed its link in the settings.
