The headphone slot is nothing more than a smaller version of the TRS connector, which has been in use since the 1870s and has a diameter of 6.35 millimeters. The standard TRS plug received its universal purpose for transmitting an analog audio signal only some time later, and at first it was used for telephone equipment and was intended for transmitting a stereo signal.

For musicians and the recording industry, the TRS connector and its mono version TS remain the industry standard to this day. But the TRS version, already familiar to us, first appeared in the 1960s and around the 1970s, Walkman players brought fame to the mini-jack connector. Until now, this connector has become the standard for consumer headphones.

The most important thing about the 3.5 connector is its complete versatility. Starting our journey with cassette players, our 3.5 mm slot migrated without difficulty, first to CD players, and after MP3, and, as usual for us, to phones. And you must admit, there have almost never been any difficulties with the fact that it would be impossible to connect headphones to a phone, player, or even connect to a desktop PC. The connector remained unchanged throughout its existence, with the exception of adding an additional cross-section to it - to be able to install a microphone for a conversation, switch or rewind a track - but this did not in any way affect compatibility with devices.

The mini-jack is used everywhere and no one has rights to it. And in order to repair a frayed wire, it was enough to have a soldering iron.

But in the end, Apple technical developers decided to go against established rules again - and deprived the iPhone 7 of the 3.5 connector. Now, in order to comfortably listen to music from your brand new iPhone, you need headphones with a Lightning slot. Of course, there is another solution - an adapter that will allow you to use headphones with a standard plug. The cost of such an adapter is 799 rubles, and standard Apple headphones are 2390 rubles. It’s also worth adding that Apple showed AirPods wireless headphones at the presentation, with a price of 12,990 rubles.

Why it is good

The standard audio signal transmission process, which is used in all modern phones today, is very old - more than 100 years. Apple is once again breaking the mold, forcing the entire industry to look for more modern ways to transmit audio signals.

The sound we hear is transmitted in analog form. In order to convert sound from digital to analog, smartphones have a special module. When using the Lightning connector, the headphones immediately receive a digital signal, and only then will the conversion into sound take place using the equipment located in the headphone housing. For example, this will make it possible to install an active noise reduction system, which requires constant power. This cannot be done with regular headphones without an additional battery.

It is worth noting that they said “no” to the 3.5 slot, not only in Cupertino. Two months ago, Intel came up with a proposal to make it possible to transmit a digital audio signal into the USB Type-C connector - in order to quickly get rid of the 3.5 millimeter size. According to Intel spokesman Brad Sanders, this is simply a huge device compared to other equipment that is installed in mobile phones. Without the mini-jack, mobile phones could be much thinner.

On the plus side, it is also worth adding that after the presentation of the iPhone 7, other major manufacturers will enter the market and produce headphones with Lightning support. So we should expect an alternative to the “native” Apple headphones.

And now about the bad

Departure from the standard is always painful and difficult. The main disadvantage will be the inconvenience of use and the lack of versatility. Now your favorite headphones can only be connected to the new iPhone via an adapter - and no one is safe from the fact that it can be lost. And in general, this is an additional device when, in our age, all humanity strives for ease of use.

The “native” headphones that come with the package can only be used with the new 7, or you can buy an adapter. The epicness of the situation lies in the fact that Apple MacBooks do not have a Lightning port. So Apple's next innovation brings a certain amount of inconvenience.

Let's not forget to talk about wireless headphones, but this is clearly not the answer. We can agree that Bluetooth headphones have become better recently, but it cannot be called a panacea. Firstly, they are significantly more expensive, secondly, they require constant recharging (an additional limitation to the desire for simplicity) and thirdly, not all wireless headphones keep a good connection.

Personal opinion

As time shows, one of the reasons for Apple’s uniqueness lies in its non-standard approach to seemingly standard things, and the ability to push its view on the market. Back in 2007, on September 9th, Steve Jobs introduced the first generation iPhone. One of the theses of that speech was to show the audience something different, modern, something that should push the entire technology industry forward. And here, in the case of the standard 3.5 mini-jack connector, I probably agree that it’s time to try new things, move towards more advanced technologies and other solutions. This is probably why we love Apple - for the ability to try new things.

Yesterday Apple introduced a new line of its smartphones - iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Most of the characteristics of the new iPhones became known in advance, thanks to leaks from Chinese factories where the American company's electronics are assembled.

The iPhone 7 Plus actually received a dual camera with optical zoom, both smartphones became dust- and water-resistant, but lost the 3.5 mm jack for connecting headphones. The choice of available built-in memory has also changed - the seventh iPhones can be purchased with 32, 128 and 256 gigabytes.

Nevertheless, it’s one thing to read the specifications, and quite another to twirl new devices in your hands. It was the latter that I did, immediately after the end of the presentation I ran to the demo area. I will try to tell everything calmly, putting aside emotions, of which there were surprisingly many.

Matte black and glossy black

Several phone body colors remained unchanged - silver, gold and pink. But instead of the gray “Space Gray”, two versions of the black case appeared - glossy and matte, and the glossy version (or “black onyx”) can only be chosen for devices with 128 and 256 gigabytes of memory on board.

The back of the glossy device, as expected, quickly becomes covered with fingerprints - just like the front panel of any other smartphone. The matte version is more practical in this sense.

Personally, I liked the black models. I'll explain why. The plastic inserts of the case have moved from the rear panel to the top and bottom ends, but only on the black panels their color hardly contrasts with the main coating. Therefore, visually black iPhones look absolutely monolithic, and of all the body colors they differ most from the previous generation. You want to naturally drown in deep glossy black - it resembles a freshly washed strict executive sedan.

But in general, there are few differences in design and tactile sensations compared to the 6/6s series. The screen diagonals are the same: 4.7 and 5.5 inches. It seemed to me that the “seven” was a little heavier than the 6s, but judging by the characteristics, the new models are even four grams lighter - the 7 weighs 138 g, the 7 Plus weighs 188 g.

Dual camera

Perhaps the main feature that can force even current owners of the iPhone 6S to upgrade to the “seven” is the new camera. Of course, in a couple of hours with the new iPhones in the demo area, I did not have time to do a full test, but some of its features are really captivating.

Here it is necessary to clarify that the iPhone 7 still has the usual, “single” 12 megapixel camera - naturally, with a bunch of software improvements that expand the color gamut and make shooting in low light conditions more natural. Yes, optical image stabilization has been added to it, previously available only for Plus models.

But the iPhone 7 Plus has two such cameras at once - one regular and the other with an increased focal length, which allows for 2x optical zoom in photographs. The X2 button has been added right above the shutter button in the standard Camera application. If you click on it and move your finger left and right, you can adjust the zoom, up to ten times - although this is digital.

Also, the new camera software will learn to build a so-called “depth map” of an image, highlighting an object in the foreground and artistically blurring the background. By the way, this option is not yet available even on test phones, but they promise to add it later in 2016 with the next iOS update.

Of course, the pictures loaded into the memory of demo phones were taken under ideal conditions by professional photographers, and it is almost impossible to achieve such results in real use. But, with this necessary reservation, the lower jaw insistently begged down. Luxurious photographs, simply luxurious.

Oh yes, and selfies will now be more detailed - with a seven-megapixel camera.

New AirPods headphones

“Courage to move forward,” is how Apple explained its refusal to include a headphone jack in the new iPhones. “The desire to make money on accessories and adapters,” social media users responded to her. They're half right. On the one hand, the “seven” will come with an adapter from the proprietary Lightning connector to headphones, as well as EarPods with a pin for Lightning. On the other hand, what should those who, for example, like me, listen to music in the car via cable and charges the phone at the same time? (hint: apparently you'll have to use a docking station)

The new AirPods wireless headphones are another example of this dualism: 1) they are cool and technologically advanced; 2) they are not included with the iPhone 7, and in Russia they cost from 13 thousand rubles in a company store.

I tried the sound of AirPods - a pleasant, rich sound. They quickly connect to the iPhone - you just need to take them out of the branded box, bring them to the device and press a button. And as soon as you take the “plugs” out of your ears, the sound will stop - a separate sensor is responsible for this.

At first glance, a person wearing AirPods looks a little strange - as if someone took the classic Apple headphones and cut off their wires. Only the “leg” of the AirPods is slightly longer than the standard “ears” - a microphone is hidden in it for conversations and communication with Siri, which is called by a separate button.

The headphone jack is not the only detail that Apple buried in the seventh iPhones. Now say goodbye to the physical Home button - that round one, right under the screen. Yes, in the photo it seems that it is in place, but in reality it is now just a touch panel with a round rim - it does not have a physical key stroke. But it gives feedback in a way that is already familiar to 6S owners - using the haptic motor involved in 3D Touch. Its responsiveness can be adjusted in the settings: 3 levels are available.
