It's been a while since we talked about antiviruses, but they don't stand still, including their free versions (they generally like to change the interface so often that I don't always have time to update it).
As you remember, I have already written about many free and even slightly paid anti-virus solutions, be it the well-known and good old AVZ from the material “”, loved by many “”, already remade 30 times and once loved by me “”, or the very conventional paid "Dr.Web".
In particular, in one of the articles I promised to gradually analyze a variety of antiviruses for you, and therefore I would like to continue to fulfill this promise and talk to you today about AVG.
Let's get started.
What's what and why
Actually, one of my students prompted me to write this material about a few months ago, because previously my acquaintance with AVG was limited to its old version (somewhere at the very beginning of 2013, probably) and then I was not very enthusiastic about this product . Now the situation has changed somewhat and, after testing this antivirus for several months, I finally decided to write a short article.
As in the case of Avast!, for the purposes of this article I will be quite neutral, i.e. I’ll tell you about installation and configuration, but I won’t give my expert assessment and express my opinion, because I don’t like quite a lot of antiviruses and, in general, have recently been a supporter of my own antivirus-free security method.

A little about the installation

Using AVG and setting up
We, traditionally, are interested in the settings that are hidden under the link " Options - Advanced Options".
On the tab with sound effects, I also turned them off completely, because I don’t like it when something screams like that without my knowledge from my own speakers :)
On the "Scans" tab - " Scan your entire computer" I include heuristic analysis:
This significantly increases the scanning period, but often helps to find a larger number of possible viruses during a full system scan.
On sub-tabs" Scan files and folders" And " Shell extension scan"I turned on the checkboxes" Scan system environment".
The remaining settings can be called optional for each user, because, for example, the same check schedule is your personal business in every way. Personally, I still like to do full checks and even updates purely manually, but who cares.
Where to buy a license for AVG antivirus
If you decide to purchase the full version of the program (this means the extended paid version of the antivirus, and not its free component), then it is recommended not to do this in retail stores (which not only add a significant markup, but also add to the final price the cost of the box with the program, its delivery to the store, the cost of renting the store and other “logistics”), and in online stores that:
- Firstly, it is cheaper (not only for the reasons stated above, but also because the software is purchased/sold in wholesale quantities);
- Secondly, it’s convenient, because you don’t have to go anywhere and you can pay with a credit card or an SMS from your phone;

Well, before we start troubleshooting certain computer problems, we need to understand where they come from. This is very important when “healing” the operating system. Let's find out what's what.
If you are wondering how to remove AVG Security Toolbar, then first you should note several leading places for infection with this spam. After all, avoiding potentially dangerous places is always easier than later treating your computer from the consequences of viruses, right?
The first scenario is visiting advertising sites and clicking on banners. It is impossible to say for sure which of them are very dangerous and which are not. This does not change the meaning: after visiting them, you will introduce a computer infection into the system.
If you don’t want to think about how to remove AVG Security Toolbar, then, of course, you don’t need to use various hackers and unlicensed software. It is these components that, as a rule, cause great harm to the computer. If you really can’t do without them, then try to resort only to trusted sites from which you will download applications.
Also quite a popular place, after visiting or using which you may have the AVG Security Toolbar program - these are, of course, different download managers. They quite often install extra software as a “trailer”, and not all of it is safe. Our current problem is least likely to occur when using the "Download Manager".

Software
How to remove AVG Security Toolbar? For example, after we have used the help of an antivirus, we can try to get rid of this utility, like a regular program - through the "Control Panel". In fact, visit this section in the Start menu. There you will have to find and select "Install and
Wait until a list of all installed content is generated. When everything is ready, search for AVG Security Toolbar in it and then uninstall it. Remember the location of the root folder. To do this, click on each line, and then select the “Delete” command. Nothing complicated, right? Except that finding the system registry can be very difficult. And we continue to fight with you with AVG Security Toolbar.
Additional software
Now we need one very interesting utility that will help us cope with the task. It's called CCleaner and is used to help clean the system registry. It is publicly available, free and easy to use.
Install this program and then run it. On the left side of the screen, set the scanning settings: all hard drive partitions, registry, browsers. Then on the right side of the window, click on “Analysis”. The process will take a few seconds, after which you will have to click on “Cleanup”. That's all. CCleaner will no longer be useful to us in the fight against AVG Security Toolbar. Thus, we move on to the last step.
Processes
In order to finally get rid of our current virus, we will also have to look into the processes running on the computer. They tend to interfere with us when healing the operating system.
Press Ctrl + Alt + Del, and then select In it you will have to go to the "Processes" tab. Ready? Then we can safely look at the tasks being performed at the present moment. Find AVG Security Toolbar there (usually this inscription is located in the “Description” section), highlight the corresponding line, and then click on the “End process” button. Sometimes you will have to do this action several times - the virus creates copies of itself. Once you are sure that the process is no longer in the table, you can restart the computer. Green color means everything is ok. If any protection component does not work or the anti-virus databases are out of date, the color will change to red. In addition, a large button will appear in the center of the window offering to fix all security holes (Fig. 4.45).

Components can be disabled, enabled, and their operating parameters can be changed. To configure, click on the desired component, for example Computer (Fig. 4.46).

To return to the main window, use the button
In addition to the protection component tiles, the main program window has buttons that are related to protection and located under the tiles (see Figure 4.44).
Improve your performance. It is known that while working on a computer, various system garbage (outdated files) accumulates, which does not harm the computer, but slows down its operation. By clicking this button, you can scan your computer for such files and errors (Fig. 4.47). When, having familiarized yourself with the results of the analysis, you want to fix everything and press the appropriate button, you will be offered to download a separate program, which will eliminate all errors for free the first time, but in the future it will ask for money for its work.

SETTINGS
Settings in the program are divided into two types: simple (Options) and advanced (Advanced options). In this case, the Settings duplicate the main interface of the program with minor additions.
To open settings, click the button Options in the upper right corner of the program window (see Fig. 4.44). In the menu that appears Options(Fig. 4.48) you can:
Start scanning;
Update anti-virus databases;
Go to information about viruses;

Let's take a closer look at the Additional parameters item (Fig. 4.49).

To get in Extra options you can also use protection components (click on the component and select Options). In this case, you will be taken directly to the section (submenu) of the settings that relates to the selected protection component, which is quite convenient.
Let's highlight the main settings items needed by most users. First of all, they will concern protection components.
In Fig. 4.49 you can see that some settings are combined into groups.
Computer protection, Email protection, Browsing protection, Identity Protection are responsible for protection components. Initially, they set the optimal parameters for effective fight against viruses. If you wish, you can add some parameters or, conversely, remove them.
Scans. By default, AVG Antivirus Free provides one standard set of parameters for four types of scanning, and the user himself determines which of them will be used during the scan (Fig. 4.50).

The more parameters are involved, the more thorough the check, but such a scan will take much more time and resources. And vice versa, the fewer parameters are selected, the faster the check will be, however, the reliability will decrease. Please note: the developer has set the optimal settings for each type of scanning. The only thing you can add is to check the Enable removable device scanning checkbox in the Removable device scanning item. Considering how many computers get infected when using other people's unverified removable storage media, this would be justified.
Shell extension scanning allows you to scan through the context menu.
In the Schedules group, you can set up a schedule according to which AVG Antivirus Free will scan your computer, update the anti-virus databases and the program itself (Fig. 4.51).

Scheduling a scan is very easy. This operation consists of three steps based on three tabs:
Schedule - set the scan time;
Options - select scan options;
Location - determine what exactly you plan to check (disk, folder, file).
It's even easier with the update schedule. In the appropriate settings, activate (or deactivate) the task and specify the desired time.
AVG Antivirus Free may detect some files as unwanted and restrict access to them. To work normally with the necessary files in such cases, add them to Exceptions (Fig. 4.52).

Virus storage is a place where all viruses detected on a computer are isolated. You can configure its size and possible actions with objects placed in it (Fig. 4.53).
If you configured something incorrectly and the program began to work worse, return the original settings: click the Default button in the lower left corner of the Advanced settings window.

CHECKING YOUR COMPUTER
To start a full scan, click the Scan button in the main program window (Fig. 4.54). To select a different scanning option, use the Scan Options button, which is located to the right of the Scan button.

In addition to the proposed Full Scan, you can perform a Scheduled Scan, as well as scan individual files and folders.
If the scan takes a long time, you can configure the computer to turn off after the scan is completed. To do this, in the Settings window, click on the Additional scanning settings link and in the window that appears, check the Turn off the computer after scanning is complete (Fig. 4.55).
