Unformat
The first thing many PC users try to do after an accidental or thoughtless format is to simply deform the disk using one of the many “Unformat” tools widely available on the market today. It won’t be difficult to buy or simply download such programs for free, but attempts to recover lost data using them can be expensive... What do these tools do? Literally - they are trying to reconstruct, rebuild, or somehow recreate the original file system in their own way. Existed before the disk was formatted.

While such tools exist and generally do their job well, they are simply not designed to deal with drives with a destroyed file system. The task of formatting is to clean the media of all files, viruses and errors on it. A partition formatted in the desired file system makes it possible to increase the performance of your computer.
Types of hard drive formatting
Any formatting consists of the following main steps:
- When manufactured at the factory, any hard drive is low-level formatted. At this stage, its physical structure is created. Such markings cannot be changed during the operation of the disk.
- The second stage is the creation of several sections on the storage medium. They can be created in almost any number, depending on the disk capacity. The user can independently create such sections.
- High level formatting. These are actions to delete files from the media. It is divided into fast and complete.
First, you need to understand what processes occur during formatting of partitions. Without this knowledge, it is difficult to carry out high-quality hard drive recovery. When you try to format any partition, you are asked to select the method by which this action will be carried out. That is, you can specify whether quick or full formatting will be performed. The final result of all work depends on the right choice.
Let's consider what the difference is between these methods, and whether it is possible to recover information after such operations:
- Quick formatting. If you check the box for selecting formatting methods, only the file table will be overwritten. The files themselves will remain untouched. They will only disappear from the visibility of the system. After such actions, it is quite possible to recover information from the hard drive even using the operating system.
- Full formatting allows you not only to hide files, but also analyzes the state of the disk, corrects detected errors and damage. After this, a new file table is formed. Recovering a formatted disk is only possible using a special program. However, in this case there is no guarantee that after such actions all data will be restored.
Attention! If partitions or the entire disk are accidentally formatted, new files cannot be written to the supposedly empty disk. The more new information is recorded, the less likely it is that the lost data can then be recovered.
Recovering a formatted hard drive

- After the analysis, the program will create an additional folder “Unnamed deleted files”, and in it - a folder “Images”. The found files will be located in these folders. The program allows you to restore them to disk. To do this, you can simply right-click on the desired file and select the “Recovery” command that appears.
- In the window you need to specify the location to save these files. In the same way, you can restore not only individual files, but also the entire folder.
- Based on the scan results, you can create an image of the recovered disk. This will simplify the user's actions when repeatedly accessing this data. The next time you start the program, you will be able to continue working with the recovered information.

If a quick format has been carried out, then all the information that was recorded on the hard drive is not affected, and only the file system headers are cleared.
If a full format is carried out in each sector of the hard drive, information is completely erased and subsequent recovery is practically impossible.
If we talk about the operation of restoring files after formatting, then everything happens according to the same scheme as work aimed at finding and restoring simply deleted files. Recovering data after formatting a disk is a reality if you follow the basic steps and tips.
Things to remember
The most important thing to remember is that after formatting and loss of important information, you cannot write anything to the hard drive. It is recommended to completely disconnect this disk until the lost information is completely restored. You also need to pay attention - the Windows Vista and XP operating system independently creates files and directories on an “empty” hard drive, even when it is not asked to do so.
From this we can conclude that since we cannot write anything to a formatted hard drive, we need another hard drive in order to completely restore the lost data; it must be larger than the first hard drive.
It is also worth noting that the entire process of recovering information from a formatted hard drive will take a lot of time, so you should be patient. For example, a 200 GB hard drive takes approximately 4-7 hours to recover. And modern hard drives reach capacities of 10 Tb.

There are two different versions of GetDataBack- for disks with the NTFS file system and with the file systemFAT. The user is only required to guess what version of the file system was on the disk before formatting. Usually this is NTFS, butFATused on flash drives.

In the first window of the Wizard, we will need to select our option for data loss - this is either a file system failure, for example, due to disk programs likeAcronis Disk Director, or unintentional installation of Windows on an existing data partition. In the latter case, select “Significant file system losses” and so on.
In our example, we will consider the scenario where, when installing Windows, we accidentally formatted a disk that contains data and now we want to recover files from it.
In this case, the most suitable item is File system loss. Mark this item in the selection window and click “Next”.
Step 1: Selecting disks for recovery.
Next, the Wizard will prompt you to select a disk on the left side of the window on which we will search for deleted data. Do not forget - this is the physical disk of your computer on which the lost data was located.
Even if you see a damaged partition in the drop-down list of partitions on a physical disk, it is better to select the entire hard disk, as done in the screenshot.
We will not consider all other settings, for example, selective scanning; usually this is not necessary. Therefore, it is better to scan the entire disk, leaving the default values.
But let’s pay attention to the “Settings” sectionin which we note the points:
“Recover deleted"
“Allow duplicate files”
Only now you can begin the scanning process itself by clicking the “Next” button. The progress of the search for data available for recovery is displayed as a ticker.
After the scan is completed, a list of found file systems will open, select it and click “Next”.
In this window we will be able to see the files that are available for recovery.
If necessary, their contents can be viewed directly from the program interface to make sure that the files are not damaged.
