Now is the time to level up your design with web fonts

Without exaggeration, online typography is currently experiencing an exciting period in its life. Recent technological leaps have brought us one step closer to typographic nirvana on the internet. The step everyone has been waiting for for so long.

The freedom to use web fonts outside the safe list on all leading operating systems is made possible largely due to three major, almost simultaneous technological factors: widespread support for the @font-face rule in browsers; the emergence of such “font repositories” as Typekit and Fontdeck; creation of a new font format - an archived WOFF font file.

* Few of these fonts are for Cyrillic, so this selection is more suitable for “outsourcers”. Let's hope that at least some of these and other fonts for Slavic languages in Cyrillic will soon appear. Add tags

Typography is an art that seamlessly combines technique, ingenuity and perspective. With few exceptions, good design means good typography. It doesn’t matter what a designer is working on: designing a website or user interface, working on a brochure layout, or creating a logo for a brand – font will be one of the key elements of a successful project. At the same time, not only the choice of fonts is of great importance, but also their correspondence to each other, as well as color schemes. There can be a lot of options, but the correct choice of font largely determines whether the project will be successful or fail. Sometimes it is enough to overlook even minor details to negate all the creative efforts that went into creating an outstanding design. Luckily, there are plenty of resources to help you with typography.

Many designers, especially beginners, tend to strive for everything new. They closely follow all trends in typography and use the newest and, as it seems to them, “unhackneyed” fonts in their design. This is mistake. Typography is a conservative discipline, and new here does not always mean better. To see this, just look at which fonts were the most popular in 2016.

Univers is one of the favorite fonts of designer Adrian Frutiger, who put a lot of effort into its creation. The Univers font has gained great popularity primarily due to its legibility. Bush's election campaigns in 2000 and 2004, and can also be seen in the logos of Audi, eBay and Montreal Metro. Unfortunately, this wonderful font does not support the Cyrillic alphabet.

In this article, we have provided fonts for professional graphic designers that can be used to design pages or printed materials. The large number of available fonts often leads to confusion, because at the same time they also need to be combined correctly. Here are the rules for combining fonts to help you cope with this task:

  1. Do not use too contrasting fonts - it may turn out that each of them will draw attention to itself, distracting the reader from the content.
  2. But don’t choose too similar ones - they will merge and create a feeling of incompleteness.
  3. Create a visual hierarchy - think of how printed newspapers usually look: they have a clear structure of headlines.
  4. Do not forget about the context - after all, the design is created for a reason, but in accordance with the needs of a specific company.
  5. Don't use more than three different fonts on one page.

In 2018, the number of high-quality free fonts allows designers to fully work on tasks without being at all embarrassed in their choice. That's why we wrote about the best free fonts.
