Thanks to the abundance of torrent trackers and other free resources, you can find and download almost any multimedia content to your computer. But, however, there are exceptions here. What to do, for example, if the broadcast is carried out in streaming mode and where is the guarantee that the online audio broadcast, the recording of which you would like to have on your PC, will then be posted on the Internet? In such cases, it is better not to rely on chance, but to take and record sound from the computer yourself.

There is nothing complicated about this, you don’t even need special programs, however, their use would be preferable. Let's first consider how to record sound from a computer using the system itself. Popular versions of Windows have such a useful tool as “Sound Recorder,” which allows you to capture an audio stream from both a microphone and a sound card. But before you get started, you need to check whether an appropriate recording device is available on your computer.

Record sound on a computer using Windows

Right-click on the sound icon in the tray and select “Recording Devices” (or “Sound Devices”) from the menu.

Most likely, in the window that opens on the “Recording” tab, you will find only a microphone, which, however, does not mean that other recording devices are not available. Right-click on an empty space in the window and select “Show disabled devices” from the menu. If “Stereo Mixer” or “What U Hear” appears in the list, great, that’s what we’ll use to capture sound. Right-click on it, in the menu select first “Enable” and then “Set as default”.

After saving the settings, launch the standard “Sound Recorder” or “Voice Recorder” application (in Windows 10) from the Start menu.

We believe there is no need to explain how to use it; all the work here comes down to pressing one button. Audio will be recorded from the speakers, but if you need to record sound to the computer from a microphone, instead of the stereo mixer in the settings of the “Sound” window, you must select the microphone by default. Naturally, the latter must be connected to the computer.

Programs for recording sound from a microphone and audio card

The above method is simple and convenient, but, alas, it is not suitable for everyone. The fact is that the “Stereo Mixer” device may either not be implemented at the driver level, or may be blocked by the sound card manufacturer. The sound from the audio card, however, can still be recorded, but for this you will have to use third-party programs. There are many such programs, both paid and free. One of them is Audacity is a simple but powerful program for recording sound and editing digital audio.

The program can record sound from an external and built-in microphone, mixer and Line In channel. On some audio card models, it is possible to capture streaming Internet radio broadcasts, that is, the application can be used as a means of recording sound from the Internet to a computer. Audacity also has many other functions, but in this case we are interested in sound recording. The procedure is as follows. Launch the program, select Windows WASAPI as the signal source, and the device you need, that is, a microphone or audio card, as the sound source.

Unfortunately, for some reason the names of the available devices in Audacity are displayed in clutter, but this is not such a problem, in the end, you can make test recordings from both outputs, determine the best one and continue to choose it. To capture the audio stream, press the red round button; to stop, press the black square. To save the recorded data to a file, go to the menu File - Export and select the desired format.

A good alternative to Audacity is a simple program for recording sound from a computer. VoiceRecorder allows you to record sound from an audio card, microphone and audio card/microphone simultaneously; the required mode is selected in the drop-down menu. The program supports recording in MP3 and WAV, cutting out silence, and selecting the quality of the output file. Audio is captured by pressing the “Record” button, and saved by pressing the “Stop” button.

Among the paid applications, we can recommend the program AudioMaster, especially if you need to record sound on your computer from a microphone. To do this, click “Record sound from microphone” in the menu, in the window that opens, select, if necessary, a sound recording device and click the “Start new recording” button.

Upon completion of the recording, AudioMaster will offer to edit it - change voice parameters, increase the volume, add effects, etc. However, you can save the recorded voice without preliminary editing. Click on the save icon located on the toolbar and select the appropriate format in the wizard window.

Record audio using online services

And finally, we will look at the third option, namely how to record sound onto a computer through a microphone using special online services. Being designed for a wide range of users, they are distinguished by their simplicity and the absence of any settings. Some of the most popular services for recording audio from a microphone include OnlineVoiceRecorder, VoiceRecorder, Vocalremover and Dictaphone.

OnlineVoiceRecorder allows you to record audio from the built-in and external microphone and then save it to an MP3 file. The tool is free, has virtually no settings, has a simple, intuitive interface, and supports previewing the recording and trimming it.

Another free service offers similar functionality. This online voice recorder can capture data from a microphone and save it to a WAV file (without loss of quality).

– a good online voice recorder that allows you to record from a microphone, followed by basic editing and saving in MP3, WAV and OGG formats to choose from. After recording, the audio can be listened to; effects can change the timbre and size of the “room”.

An analogue of Vocalremover is a free service that allows you to record sound from a microphone. It differs from previous resources in the ability to overlay audio tracks and save recordings on the server. Additionally, the online application supports moving through the recording using the mouse, undoing and redoing actions. When saving a recording to a file, only one format is available - MP3.

That's probably all. These were the main ways to record sound from speakers and a microphone to a computer; which one is better is up to you to decide. In our opinion, it is more universal to use third-party desktop programs that allow you to record sound even when the mixer is unavailable. As for online services, their capabilities are limited, in addition, for correct operation they may need to enable Flash technology, the use of which is considered unsafe today.

Choice sound recording programs, in fact, has little effect - they all do their jobs well. There are a large number of so-called sequencers, or digital audio stations- programs that allow you to record and play many audio files at the same time. In addition, they make it possible to cut the file into parts, move them, and shuffle them together; and also - change the pitch of the sound, playback speed, stretch the sound. In general, edit the entry as you wish.

In any of these programs you can record everything, edit it, mix it, and master it. Also, they all support working with MIDI - you can sample instruments in them.

Modern music recording software They differ, for the most part, only in the interface. The functionality is approximately the same everywhere. I don't have extensive experience with all the popular digital audio stations, so my review is not an attempt at objective judgment. I’ll just tell you how I see them and in what cases I use them :)

Steinberg Cubase

I can't say that the interface is simple. But the huge number of settings and functions creates flexibility. It is worth noting that Steinberg are one of the creators of the VST plug-in format, which is now used by the whole world. Of course, their product perfectly supports any such plugins. Cubase is good not only as an audio editor, but also as a MIDI editor. My experience with him comes down to the second case. At one time, a version of this program was supported - Steinberg Nuendo, which had few differences from Cubase.

Cakewalk Sonar

The interface of this program is simpler than Cubase. Many of my friends work in this program, recording, editing, sampling and mixing. Myself I'm very pleased with Sonar's MIDI editor, the mode of drawing notes on the staff. This editor contains few functions, but is simple and trouble-free. I'm talking specifically about entering notes into a computer, and not about creating scores for printing. There is almost no musical notation here.

Magix Samplitude

The interface is not very complicated, comparable to Sonar. Historically, I use Samplitude. The fact is that when I first got into the studio and observed the work of a professional sound engineer, he used this program. This way I got my first free experience and then never switched to any other sequencer. Although, I must admit, Sonar looks a little more convenient from the outside :) In addition, Samplitude has a rather crude implementation of working with the staff. There are many glitches related to the display and printing of notes (Score mode), although other modes work great.

Digidesign ProTools

The fundamental difference between this program and others is that Digidesign also creates equipment tailored for its editor. Of course, this affects the quality and convenience of work. ProTools itself has a clear interface and convenient audio editing tools.

Apple Logic Pro, Ableton Live

Unfortunately, I myself have not worked with any of these programs, although I have seen others do it many times. Nevertheless, they are quite popular and it is impossible not to mention them in the review.

Adobe Audition, Fruity Loops

These editors, as far as I've seen, are less used among professionals than the ones listed above. But they have their supporters and are updated regularly.

I use Magix Samplitude. But if I did not yet have honed skills in working with any of the described programs, then I would choose for myself Cakewalk Sonar, because working with MIDI is implemented better there. Otherwise, I'm completely satisfied with Samplitude. Using his example, I will show how everything can be done :)

Recording sound from a microphone is a simple matter. In addition, a great many programs have been written that can record audio. From time to time, users have a not very popular need - to record an audio track of what is currently playing on the PC. Quickly navigating and saving, for example, an important conversation on Skype, can be problematic if you have never encountered sound recording on a computer before and don’t know where and what to look for. Therefore, it is better to familiarize yourself with the capabilities of Windows in advance.

You can record important audio information in the following ways:

  • if you have a stereo mixer: built-in sound recording program in Windows;
  • without a stereo mixer: special programs for sound recording, for example, Audacity;
  • using an audio cable;
  • recording using online programs.

First of all, you need to activate the stereo mix. This device is usually disabled in settings. To enable it, you need to right-click on the speaker icon in the notification area and click on “Recording devices”.

If the stereo mixer does not appear in the list that appears, right-click in the empty field in this window and turn on the “Show disabled devices” mode. Next, we activate the stereo mixer by pressing the right button as usual, then confirm the default use.

It should be noted that for non-standard cards there may be another device instead of a standard stereo mixer. For example, the source of the recording "What U Hear" from Sonic Blaster.

Record audio from a computer without a stereo mixer

It happens that some sound cards do not have drivers for a stereo mixer or the manufacturer has blocked such a device. A good assistant in this case will be the Audacity program, which is also useful if you have a stereo mixer. The program has advanced capabilities compared to standard audio recording applications.

To record sound from a computer using this program, you need to select Windows WASAPI in the first drop-down list, or your sound card in the second (which serves as your sound source) and press the start button.

Recording using an audio cable

This method is a little exotic, but useful if the stereo mixer is not supported and there is no Internet. Consequently, there is no way to download a recording program or use an online service, but you still need to record an audio track. You will need a cable with a 3.5 connector on both ends.

You need to connect one of the plugs to the microphone jack, the second to the audio output (headphones). After this, you can open any available recording program, for example, built into Windows, and carry out the necessary actions.
