Design

The design is not much different from the seventh model. The smartphones are almost identical to each other, with the exception of size.

Due to the introduction of wireless charging, the back panel was again made of glass, but not ordinary glass, but heavy-duty glass with an olephobic coating that prevents dirt from sticking to the surface of the case.

If, nevertheless, dirt appears on the body, the coating allows you to easily remove it.

On the front panel there will be, as usual, a central round Home button.

The end part of the smartphone case will remain metal in order to avoid significant damage if dropped.

There is also no 3.5 mm headphone jack, just like in the “seven”.

On the left side there are volume buttons and a silent mode switch, and on the right is the power button, which at the same time is a screen lock button.

Dimensions

The sizes of these models differ markedly from each other. The iPhone 8 plus is distinguished not only by its large size, but also by its weight.

The weight differs from the “eight” by 54 grams. On the one hand, it seems that this is not much. But when compared, this difference is felt.

The iPhone 8 measures 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3 mm and weighs only 148 grams, while the iPhone 8 Plus measures 158.4 x 78.1 x 7.5 mm and weighs 202 grams.

From the listed dimensions, it is obvious that the iPhone 8 Plus, indeed, larger sizes compared to the "eight", even though the thickness differs by only 0.2 mm.

In this case, the same situation exists as with “sevens”. The first one is much smaller in size than the second one.

Screen

The differences did not ignore the diagonal and characteristics of the screens of the presented models.

The iPhone 8 has a screen diagonal of 4.7 inches, while its “big brother” is 5.5 inches. Both models have liquid crystal displays with IPS matrices.

The screen resolution of the iPhone 8 is 1334x750 pixels and their density is 326 ppi, while the 8 Plus model has 1920x1080 pixels and their density is 401 ppi. The contrast of the displays is also different.

For the G8 it is 1400:1, and for the older model it is 1300:1. The displays do not differ in brightness; it is 625 cd/m2 for both models.

In other respects, the screens are identical for both smartphones. For example, both use True Tone color temperature adaptation technology.

It's also worth noting that there is 3D Touch and a P3 color gamut that is more enhanced.

The viewing angle is expanded thanks to dual-domain pixels. The display has a protective olephobic coating.

Cameras

The most important difference between smartphones is their cameras.. The iPhone 8 has a camera with one main lens with a resolution of 12 megapixels and an f/1.8 aperture.

Optical image stabilization is supported for photo and video shooting.

At the same time, the iPhone 8 Plus has two cameras – a wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens. Each of them has a resolution of 12 megapixels. The wide-angle lens has an f/1.8 aperture, and the telephoto lens has an f/2.8 aperture.

Thanks to the new technology of using two lenses in the smartphone camera, many useful functions are supported:

  • 2x optical zoom;
  • tenfold digital zoom;
  • "portrait" mode;
  • portrait lighting.

Portrait mode was first introduced in the iPhone 7 Plus. He allows you to create unique images with depth of field effect.

In still photographs, the subject remains sharp and the background is naturally blurred.

Before the advent of this mode in Apple smartphones, such pictures could only be created using professional SLR cameras.

Also The latest development is portrait lighting. For now, it will only be used in the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.

This “trick” allows you to change the lighting with one touch in “portrait” mode. The G8 does not have this option, since it only has one lens.

When shooting video, the quality of smartphones is absolutely the same and has several resolutions:

  • 4K at 24/30/60 fps;
  • 1080p at 30/60 fps;
  • 720p at 30 frames per second.

A significant difference in the models' video capabilities is that the iPhone 8 Plus can use optical zoom and six times digital zoom.

There is absolutely no difference in the front cameras. They are identical for both models.

The new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have been especially transformed internally, but externally they are still difficult to distinguish from their predecessors, at least on the front panel. Both smartphones received fast memory and other gadgets that simplify the life of the average user.

Considering its small dimensions, the power of the hardware platform is truly impressive. At the same time, the characteristics of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have improved significantly. Here you will find a six-core processor made using 10 nm technology, 64 GB of internal memory, and not 32, as on its predecessors, and 4.7- and 5.5-inch screens, respectively. The battery capacity of both phones has decreased, but they have received fast charging and wireless functions.

In terms of design, both devices still have metal frames around them, but there is now a glass cover on the back, which has several advantages over anodized aluminum.

Processor and memory

The Apple iPhone 8/8 Plus uses an A11 Bionic processor with 6 cores on board, which is equipped with an advanced neural engine and an integrated M11 coprocessor. This solution uses 2 high-performance Monsoon cores and 4 energy-efficient Mistral cores. As far as we know, this is the first time the company has used a video accelerator of its own design, and its specifications remain secret. Thanks to this combination, smartphones score a record 200 thousand points in the AnTuTu benchmark.

Regardless of the model, be it 4.7- or 5.5-inch, you get two options of internal memory to choose from: 64 or 256 GB. Apple doubled the nominal ROM capacity compared to the previous generation, but left the RAM capacity the same. Thus, the iPhone 8 has 2 GB of RAM on board, and the iPhone 8 Plus has 3 GB.

Screen and camera

The general characteristics of the display panels of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have also not undergone major changes. These are the same IPS screens, but with improved color reproduction thanks to support for the DCI-P3 and HDR color space. The pixel density remained the same: 326 ppi in the case of the 4.7-inch model and 401 ppi in the 5.5-inch.

It should be noted that here and there the True Tone function has appeared, which adjusts the hue of the display colors at its own discretion. The picture becomes a little yellowish, but the eyes get tired much less.

Cameras began to shoot better, despite the fact that their characteristics remained virtually unchanged. iPhone 8 received one 12-megapixel module with an f/1.8 aperture, optical stabilizer and autofocus. His brother has acquired a pair of lenses that have sensors with the same resolution (12 MP), but with different apertures. The main module boasts an f/1.8 aperture, and the secondary module has an f/2.8 aperture. There is an LED flash at the back, and Retina Flash is used to highlight selfies.

The selfie camera on both phones has a 7-megapixel sensor with f/2.2 aperture.

Battery, autonomy and new features

Unfortunately, Cupertino engineers had to reduce the battery capacity of the regular Eight and Plus. Compared to last year's Seven, the new model has lost more than 100 mAh, and the difference in capacity between the Pluses is more than 200 mAh. One way or another, in terms of autonomy, the new products showed themselves to be no worse, or even better, in some specific use scenarios.

The iPhone 8 battery capacity is 1821 mAh and its power is 6.91 Wh, while the iPhone 8 Plus has a 2691 mAh battery with a power of 10.22 Wh. According to the manufacturer, the more compact model is capable of 14 hours of talk time or 12 hours of surfing in Safari. The older model can withstand 21 hours of calls and 13 hours of web surfing, despite the fact that it has the same characteristics.

Both devices support wireless charging, which allows you to increase the battery level to 50% in 30 minutes, provided that the phone is in standby mode. There is also wireless charging, powered by Qi technology.

Other Features

All Apple smartphones of 2017 are protected from moisture and dust according to the IP67 standard. iPhone and iPhone 8 Plus can be submerged in water to a depth of 1 meter and remain there for 30 minutes. They are equipped with a physical Home button with a built-in fingerprint scanner.

Both gadgets are equipped with Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC for Apple Pay contactless payments, as well as GPS and GLONASS for navigation. The LTE module built into the processor provides download/upload speeds according to the Cat.12 standard (up to 450 Mbit/s).

Also, do not forget about the presence of support for ARKit, which ensures the operation of augmented reality technology. It uses Metal 2 and Core ML software to improve system resource efficiency.

The controversy surrounding the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, the new versions of Apple's smartphone, continues. Before the release of the iPhone X, they received flagship status. Moreover, of the two new products, perhaps the more interesting is the iPhone 8 - precisely because the iPhone X with a 5.8″ display diagonal will clearly relegate the iPhone 8 Plus to the background, but the iPhone 8, even after the release of the iPhone X, will remain relevant as a compact model . So let's take a closer look at the pros and cons of the iPhone 8 and compare it with its immediate predecessor.

In general, the idea of ​​releasing two flagships first, and then, just over a month later, an even cooler flagship, seems controversial. After all, new iPhones are bought primarily by enthusiasts, those who want the latest technology, the most fashionable design; those who like to feel at the peak of progress. But it is for them that the iPhone X model is more interesting. And for those who approach the choice of a device more rationally, they are obviously not interested in the latest iPhone, since the previous generation models, which are not much inferior to them in terms of user qualities, can be bought much cheaper.

However, this concerns the iPhone 8 model to a lesser extent than the iPhone 8 Plus, since the “eight” will be the most advanced compact model in the Apple smartphone line for at least a year, and for those who want to get the most advanced characteristics, but at the same time prefers small devices, it’s worth paying attention to the iPhone 8.

The differences, judging by the table, are relatively small. Firstly, both latest-generation smartphones have a new SoC and wireless charging (in addition to regular charging), and secondly, the flash memory options of 32 and 128 GB have given way to a 64 GB option (the maximum 256 GB option remains unchanged). In addition, we can note the appearance of a 4K 60 fps shooting mode. However, many hardware and software improvements to the camera were not included in our standard list of characteristics, and even if we talk about them, we tested the devices in practice. This is what we will move on to.

Packaging and equipment

The design of the iPhone 8 box is similar to the previous model, except that the shadow in the image of the smartphone is intended to emphasize the main design feature: the back surface is made of glass.

Inside there is also nothing new: EarPods with a Lightning connector, an adapter from Lightning to a minijack, leaflets, a charger (5 V 1 A), a Lightning cable, stickers and a key for removing the SIM card cradle.

Design

How much has the iPhone itself changed in appearance? We must admit that it is minimal. If you look at the smartphone from the front, you can’t see at all that this is not an iPhone 7. The main innovation, as already noted, is the glass back cover.

As we remember, the last version of the iPhone with a glass back was the iPhone 4S (and before it, the iPhone 4). And many users are still nostalgic for this decision. Now the iPhone again has a glass back surface, and we admit it’s beautiful.

At the same time, it cannot be said that the device has become more slippery; it is quite comfortable to hold in the hand. And overall it makes a pleasant impression. And an important point: thanks to the glass cover, the smartphone now supports wireless charging using the Qi standard. Apple's own AirPower wireless charging will only be available next year, but no one is stopping you from buying a third-party charger (their prices start at about 1,000 rubles in large chain stores).

Returning to the issue of changing the appearance, we have to admit that, alas, the glass surface is not enough to make the new iPhone feel like something truly advanced. Yes, a beautiful smartphone. But, firstly, as soon as you put on the case, all this splendor is hidden, and secondly, it’s hardly possible to amaze with the glass rear surface in 2017. And we saw everything else already in the iPhone 7.

The arrangement of connectors, buttons, camera, flash and other elements has not changed compared to the iPhone 7. The only new detail, besides the glass rear surface, is the mirrored apple. It also, I must admit, looks impressive. But, again, it’s hard to call this a serious innovation.

However, there is still one serious design change, and it relates not to the visual side, but to the sound side: we are talking about redesigned speakers. Apple says the speakers are 25% louder. It’s difficult to say whether this figure is correct, but indeed, even in comparison with the iPhone 7 Plus, the increase in volume when playing music through the smartphone’s speakers is noticeable.

But what’s more important is not the volume itself, but the improved sound quality. For comparison, we played Massive Attack's The Spoils on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 7 Plus. It is difficult for a smartphone for two reasons: firstly, because of the deep bass beat, and secondly, because of the bright female vocals. On the iPhone 7 Plus, listening to this composition at maximum volume is simply unpleasant: the noise, wheezing, and sound distortion are so strong that it cannot be enjoyable. Moreover, not only the beat is distorted, but also the voice. Whereas on the iPhone 8 the voice sounds much clearer, and the bass, although it does not become richer, still does not drown in noise.

It is clear that the example with the Massive Attack composition is radical: after all, even on the iPhone 8, such tracks do not sound good enough to be enjoyable. But at least it’s not as bad as before, and the very fact of progress in this direction is very encouraging. The iPhone 8 can be used to play audiobooks, some soft background music and, of course, speakerphone, and it will do this much better than its predecessor.

Summarizing our impressions of the design of the iPhone 8, let's say that the most interesting thing here is not even the glass cover and wireless charging (in fact, in the camp of Android smartphones these features have been found at every turn for several years now), but the significantly improved speaker, which did not affect the this depends on the dimensions and other design qualities.

By the way, the fact that the iPhone 8 has almost the same dimensions as its predecessor and a similar arrangement of all elements is a big plus for lovers of cases. You don’t have to buy them again if you previously had an iPhone 7. But, on the other hand, this is a minus for those who like to casually show off a new smartphone. With a case, the iPhone 8 will be completely impossible to distinguish from the iPhone 7, even for very well-versed people, and without the case, the difference lies only in the glass back surface and the mirrored apple.

Screen

The screen parameters of the iPhone 8 are no different from those of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 7: 4.7-inch diagonal, IPS matrix with a resolution of 1134×750. By modern standards - average parameters. However, the manufacturer has implemented many interesting technologies in the iPhone 8 screen, which will be discussed in more detail in the commentary from the editor of the “Monitors” and “Projectors and TV” sections. The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface that is scratch-resistant. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are better than those of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) screen (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). For clarity, here is a photograph in which a white surface is reflected when the screens are turned off (on the left is Nexus 7, on the right is Apple iPhone 8, then they can be distinguished by size):

The screen of the Apple iPhone 8 is slightly darker (brightness according to photographs is 105 versus 112 for the Nexus 7). The ghosting of reflected objects in the Apple iPhone 8 screen is very weak, this indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the LCD matrix) (OGS - One Glass Solution type screen). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (glass/air type) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of intense external illumination, but their repair in the case of cracked external glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be replaced. The outer surface of the screen has a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (effective, much like the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are removed much more easily and appear at a lower speed than with regular glass.

When manually controlling the brightness and displaying the white field in full screen, the maximum brightness value was about 540 cd/m², the minimum was 2.5 cd/m². The maximum brightness is very high, and, given the excellent anti-glare properties, readability even on a sunny day outdoors will be at a good level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable value. There is automatic brightness adjustment based on the light sensor (it is located above the front speaker slot). Please note that solely for user convenience, disabling and enabling this function is hidden deep in the smartphone settings. Apparently, Apple therefore wants to keep automatic adjustment turned on whenever possible, in order to extend battery life. In automatic mode, as external lighting conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider - the user uses it to set the desired brightness level for the current conditions. If you don’t change anything, then in complete darkness the brightness drops to 3.2 cd/m² (very dark), in an office illuminated by artificial light (about 550 lux) the screen brightness is set to 100-125 cd/m² (acceptable), in a very bright environment (corresponding to lighting on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight - 20,000 lux or a little more) rises to 610 cd/m² (even higher than with manual adjustment). We were not entirely satisfied with the result, so in the dark we slightly moved the brightness slider to the right, and for the three conditions indicated above we got 12, 105 and 610 cd/m² (ideal). It turns out that the auto-brightness function works adequately, and it is possible to adjust the nature of the brightness change to suit the user’s requirements. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift even with large viewing deviations from perpendicular to the screen and without inverting shades. Color balance varies slightly, color saturation is normal. Let us remind you that the photograph cannot serve as a reliable source of information about the quality of color rendering and is provided only for conditional visual illustration. In this case, apparently due to the peculiarities of the emission spectrum of the screen, the color balance and brightness of colors in photographs of the Apple iPhone 8 screen are somewhat different from what is visible to the eye and determined by a spectrophotometer.

Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen:

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens and the contrast remained at a high level.

And a white field:

The brightness at an angle of the screens decreased (by at least 4 times, based on the difference in shutter speed), but in the case of the Apple iPhone 8 the drop in brightness is less. When deviated diagonally, the black field is lightened to a medium degree and acquires a purple tint. The photographs below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is approximately the same!):

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is high - about 1380:1. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 24 ms (13 ms on + 11 ms off). The transition between halftones of gray 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes a total of 37 ms. The gamma curve, constructed using 32 points with equal intervals based on the numerical value of the shade of gray, did not reveal any blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.12, which is slightly lower than the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates little from the power-law dependence:

Such spectra are found in top mobile devices from Sony and other manufacturers. Apparently, this screen uses LEDs with a blue emitter and green and red phosphor (usually a blue emitter and a yellow phosphor), which, in combination with special matrix filters, allows for a wide color gamut. Yes, and the red phosphor apparently uses so-called quantum dots. For a consumer device, a wide color gamut is not an advantage, but a significant disadvantage, since as a result, the colors of images - drawings, photographs and films - oriented to the sRGB space (and the vast majority of them) have an unnatural saturation. This is especially noticeable on recognizable shades, such as skin tones. However, in this case, the color gamut is carefully adjusted to the sRGB boundaries. As a result, visually the colors have a natural saturation.

This applies to those images that have an sRGB profile or no profile at all. However, today's top-end Apple devices are native to the Display P3 color space, with slightly richer greens and reds. The Display P3 space is based on SMPTE DCI-P3, but has a D65 white point and a gamma curve of approximately 2.2. In addition, the manufacturer states that starting with iOS 9.3, color management is supported at the system level, which makes it easier for iOS applications to correctly display images with a specified color profile. Indeed, by supplementing the test images (JPG and PNG files) with the Display P3 profile, we obtained a color gamut wider than sRGB (output in Safari):

Note that the coordinates of the primary colors coincide almost exactly with those specified for the DCI-P3 standard. Let's look at the spectra in the case of test images with the Display P3 profile:

It can be seen that in this case no cross-mixing of components occurs, that is, this color space is native to the Apple iPhone 8 screen.

The balance of shades on the gray scale is good, since the color temperature is close to the standard 6500 K, and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is less than 10, which is considered an acceptable indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, color temperature and ΔE change little from hue to hue - this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of color balance. The nature of the change in values ​​from hue to hue indirectly shows that software color correction is used. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

This Apple device has a feature Night Shift, which makes the picture warmer at night (the user specifies how much warmer). In any case, when having fun with a tablet or smartphone at night, it is better to reduce the screen brightness to a minimum, but still comfortable level, and only then, to calm your own paranoia, turn the screen yellow with the Night Shift setting.

There is a function True Tone, which, when turned on, adjusts the color balance to environmental conditions. For example, we activated it and placed the smartphone under LED lamps with cool white light, resulting in values ​​of 6.0 for ΔE and 7100 K for color temperature. Under a halogen incandescent lamp (warm light) - 3.7 and 6260 K, that is, the color temperature has become lower. The function works as expected. Note that the current standard is to calibrate display devices to a white point of 6500 K, but in principle, correction for the color temperature of external light can be useful if you want to achieve a better match between the image on the screen and what is visible on paper (or any other device). a medium on which colors are formed by the reflection of incident light) under current conditions.

Let's summarize. The screen has a very high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-glare properties, so the device can be used outdoors without any problems, even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be reduced to a comfortable level. It is also possible to use a mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. The advantages of the screen include an effective oleophobic coating, the absence of an air gap in the layers of the screen and flicker, good black stability to deviation of the gaze from perpendicular to the screen plane, high contrast, as well as support for the sRGB color gamut (with the participation of the OS) and good color balance. There are no significant shortcomings. At the moment, this is perhaps one of the best displays among all smartphones.

Performance

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are powered by the new Apple A11 Bionic SoC. This is a 64-bit SoC that includes 6 cores, of which two are high-performance and the other four are energy-efficient. Moreover, at maximum load, all six cores can work simultaneously, which was not the case before. Let's see how this affected benchmark performance!

Let's start with browser tests: SunSpider 1.0.2, Octane Benchmark, Kraken Benchmark and . The Safari browser was used. In the case of the iPhone 7, testing was carried out a year ago on iOS 10. If you update the model to iOS 11, the results may be slightly different, but not much.

So, there is a significant (about one and a half times) superiority of the iPhone 8 over the iPhone 7. In practice, this will manifest itself in more comfortable web surfing. But in this case, this is also important to us as a demonstration of the capabilities of the new CPU.

Now let's see how the iPhone 8 performs in the comprehensive AnTuTu and Geekbench 4 benchmark, which measures CPU performance.

And here we see even more clear confirmation of the superiority of the new processor: the picture is especially expressive in the Geekbench multi-core subtest. Apparently, this is precisely the result of the simultaneous operation of all cores.

The last group of benchmarks is dedicated to testing GPU performance. We used 3DMark and GFXBench Metal.

Let us remind you that off-screen tests mean displaying a 1080p image on the screen, regardless of the actual screen resolution. And Onscreen tests mean displaying a picture in the resolution that matches the device screen resolution. That is, Offscreen tests are indicative from the point of view of the abstract performance of the SoC, and Onscreen tests are indicative from the point of view of the comfort of the game on a specific device.

The results were very strange. Therefore, we decided to add an iPhone 7 Plus to the comparison, with iOS 11 installed. But this did not allow us to determine the reason for this situation. We see that in some subtests the iPhone 8 not only does not outperform its predecessors, but is inferior to them (albeit slightly). In others, indeed, the breakthrough of the new product is undeniable.

Here the results are much more logical: in the Ice Storm Unlimited mode, the iPhone 8’s superiority over its predecessor is almost two times, and in the Sling Shot mode – by a third.

And the last test is Basemark Metal. Unfortunately, we did not test the iPhone 7 in it, so in order to make at least some comparison, we launched it not only on the “eight”, but also on the iPhone 7 Plus. And it turned out that the iPhone 8 confidently outperformed the iPhone 7 Plus in terms of scores, and the gap in the first scene in terms of fps turned out to be huge: for the iPhone 7 Plus this value fluctuated around 30 fps, and for the iPhone 8 it remained at 60 fps .

In general, we can admit that the iPhone 8 is indeed significantly faster than its predecessors, both in terms of the CPU and in operations using the GPU. It cannot be said that this is some kind of breakthrough, but in general this is the kind of increase that should be from generation to generation. By the way, we note that during the tests, the iPhone 8 heated up slightly less than the iPhone 7 Plus. However, we will talk about heating later.

Cameras

The iPhone 8, like its predecessor, does not have a second rear camera, and this is the main difference between the compact model and its larger brother. But otherwise they are identical. Let's evaluate the camera in action.

The camera copes well with everyday photography in less than favorable conditions. But it’s difficult to find differences with the previous generation, so let’s move on to a laboratory test to test the camera using our method.

Our standard test did not show a significant increase in the maximum sensor resolution compared to previous generations. However, now the camera loses significantly less detail in noise in low light, which can be called a new breakthrough. Thus, in good light there will be no noticeable difference with the same iPhone 7, but if the lighting deteriorates, it will be immediately felt. And even the flash works very effectively here: it does not work out the corners very well, but in the center of the frame it does not allow the resolution to drop. The camera copes well with everything else, as before: there is good detail in the field of the frame and in the plans, moderate noise in the shadows, and not very aggressive software processing. As a result, it, of course, will not replace a good camera, as the manufacturer is persistently trying to convince us of, but it will become an excellent tool for documentary and artistic shooting of ordinary subjects.

Autonomous operation and heating

Despite the slight reduction in battery capacity, Apple has kept the iPhone 8's battery life similar to the previous generation. In real everyday use, this is about a day.

As for benchmarks, unfortunately, Epic Citadel, which we used for these purposes before, is no longer available in the App Store, so we switched to a new benchmark - more precisely, a subtest of the benchmark that we have been using for performance tests for a long time: GFX Benchmark Metal. Manhattan 3.1 mode is the most GPU-intensive mode, so this result shows how long the smartphone will last on the most modern 3D games.

The heating is highly localized in the upper right part of the device, which apparently corresponds to the location of the SoC chip. According to the heat chamber, the maximum heating was 43 degrees (at an ambient temperature of 24 degrees). The Apple iPhone 7 heats up about the same in this test.

The iPhone 8 was not a revolution. However, no one expected this from him. It's just a very good compact smartphone, with a great camera, top performance, a great screen and a nice design. Of course, in comparison with the future iPhone X, it does not make much of an impression, and there is no radical step forward compared to the iPhone 7. However, if we abstract from comparisons and look at the new product simply as an example of a compact smartphone, we will see that there is practically nothing to criticize it for.

The appearance of a glass back cover and support for wireless charging are pleasant innovations. Yes, in 2017 they are not amazing, but we can only be glad that they are now available in current Apple models. Less obvious, but no less valuable and useful, is improving the sound quality from the speakers. Strictly speaking, there are a lot of similar little things here, and although individually they seem like something cosmetic and not conducive to innovation, together they create the forward movement that is necessary for the new iPhone.

True fans of Apple's line of smartphones remember with warmth the first iPhone 5 and 5s in 2007. Today this gadget is already a classic of the genre, despite the fact that it is still in demand among buyers. But 4-5 years ago, the main disadvantage of iPhones was the small screen diagonal. Steve Jobs, the founder and ideological inspirer of the company, categorically did not want to release smartphones with a huge screen. If the client wants a 6-9 inch display, he takes an iPad or laptop. But market demands changed. The developers heard people’s pleas and, starting with the “seven”, the company produces palm-sized gadgets.

With the release of new models in 2018, questions arose about the weight and size of the iPhone 8. Traditionally, the company offers users two smartphone options: iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. The Plus variant features an expanded battery capacity, a larger screen size, and special features.

Much was expected from the eighth series, so the presentation of a gadget identical to the “seven” caused confusion. Without even getting a good look at the model, reproaches began to pour in. Some directly called the new iPhones “7” and “7s”, deliberately ignoring the official markings.

First you need to find out what the dimensions of the iPhone 8 Plus and the main version are and then compare with the previous device. It is worth noting that in the “eight” the plastic rear roof was replaced with a glass one, which added weight and a couple of mm to the sides.

But all the cases and other accessories fit like originals from the iPhone 7, only the cutout for the logo on the back of the case does not match; on the “eight” it is shifted. But I gained as much as 10 and 12 grams in weight. It doesn't seem like much, but it feels heavier in the hand.

The diagonal of the iPhone 8 is inferior to the flagship of 2017, the frameless iPhone X, but in terms of equipment and functionality it is on the same page. There is also a wider viewing angle thanks to dual-domain pixels. The declared brightness is 625 cd/m².

Models are equipped with a wide-format liquid crystal display. The screen resolution of the iPhone 8 is 1334x750 or 326 pixels per inch, the iPhone 8 Plus is 1920x1080 or 401 pixels per inch. Contrast ratio for iPhone 8 is 1400:1, for 8 Plus – 1300:1.


It is estimated that the screen-to-body ratio in the iPhone 8 is 65.4%, in the 8 Plus it is 67.4%. Theoretically, the extended version makes better use of the display's potential. Although users complain about the inconvenience of working with a 5.5-inch screen with one hand: it is difficult to reach the top point with your finger. Apple developers achieved the ideal ratio back in the iPhone 5 and 5 s; further enlargement of the display is a necessary measure, since serious competitors have appeared.

All parameters are the same as iPhone 7, and it is impossible to distinguish the two models from the front panel. But as soon as we turn the gadget over, we see the sparkling, smooth surface of the back cover – tempered glass. Now the smartphone is less susceptible to scratches, especially when carried in pockets. But it is preferable to buy a case.

As in previous versions, the screen received an olephobic coating. As planned, it should prevent the appearance of streaks and fingerprints on the display. In reality, traces still remain, although not as critical as those of competitors.

Device weight

iPhone 8 weighs 148 g or 5.22 ounces, iPhone 8 Plus weighs 201 g or 6.63 ounces. On average, smartphones in 2017 are 7% heavier than previous models. The model with the Plus prefix is ​​the leader in weight among market offerings. Even the Galaxy S8+ weighs 173g.

The choice of a regular or Plus model is up to the buyer. Apple tries to satisfy consumer demands and releases two versions of the same smartphone every year. If you love convenience, don’t have any special requirements for the dimensions of the device, take the iPhone 8. If you dream of a big screen, want the feeling of heaviness in your pocket and coolness in the eyes of others, go for the iPhone 8 Plus.
