AppPresser is a collaboration between Scott Bolinger, Brad Williams, Brian Messenlehner, and Lisa Sabin-Wilson. You may note that Brad, Brian and Lisa are partners with WebDevStudios, but AppPresser is a separate development from WebDev.
I spoke with Scott and Brad about AppPresser to understand how users might use the solution and what their vision for the product (or service) is.
Essentially, AppPresser is a set of tools for use in WordPress by various developers. So, if you have a website but want a mobile app, you can simply turn to AppPresser to use WP to design your app. AppPresser also includes everything you need to make your WordPress app compliant with the iOS and Android app stores.
So it's just a wrapper for websites?
We've come across numerous website skins before. However, AppPresser developers claim that their solution is not just another wrapper for standard websites.
“We've tested all the plugins that promise to 'turn your site into an app,' but all they really do is package up your existing site and submit it to the app store.” (Scott Bolinger)
The developers also note that the iOS store, in particular, does not support such applications and easily rejects them. AppPresser is designed to allow WordPress developers to take advantage of modern mobile device technologies that are not available to most websites.
Some typical tasks that AppPresser helps solve include integration with the camera, geolocation tools, and phone contacts of the device. For example, if you take the camera, AppPresser offers a shortcode that allows developers to control the ability to upload images from iOS and Android devices.
Application structure
AppPresser is a plugin that uses device detection to identify visitors. Someone can enable AppPresser on their main site, someone on a subdomain, etc. However, for sites like, say, an eCommerce directory, it's best to use the main site to avoid issues with content synchronization.
Connecting AppPresser and using device detection does not mean that the site will not work in Safari or Chrome browsers. AppPresser is similar to the WP Touch plugin in many ways - it doesn't use theme switching. Instead, the functionality of the application and themes will only be applied when the corresponding system is detected.
eCommerce Focus
AppPresser comes with several plugins and themes that are very useful for eCommerce. In one of the demos, Scott showed me how the catalog theme offers all the necessary capabilities to upload product images, which was happening through the device's camera while writing the review.
However, eCommerce is not the only goal for AppPresser. The plugin developers have identified several goals that AppPresser can achieve: real estate agency applications, music band applications, video applications, etc.
AppPresser Fee
AppPresser will charge you in a slightly unusual manner. Most people who use AppPresser will be able to make almost any decision based on this tool. AppPresser is a lot like an application development framework, like existing theme frameworks for WordPress. Developers will be able to extend AppPresser to perform different actions.
However, support in this case can be very time-consuming and very in-depth in technical details. It is likely that only a small proportion of people will need annual support - perhaps they will only need help during the formation phase of their project.
The developers have not yet decided on a pricing model, but they are currently considering introducing a one-time fee for a variety of AppPresser extensions, as well as monthly support.
Not for all
AppPresser, by its very definition, is not a solution for everyone. It is not suitable for typical website owners who just want to buy a ready-made mobile application. Of course, a similar option is possible, but this is not the main goal of AppPresser; Moreover, adding such an application to the iOS store will be quite problematic.

My thoughts on AppPresser
AppPresser interested me, but I believe that many people who think they need a mobile app don't actually need one. Still, for those who really need it, this solution will definitely help.
I am interested to see the development of this project. I'm somewhat skeptical that this product will be viable, especially given how busy the developers are. However, if the market needs such a product, then I am confident that they will cope with the task. These four developers have already released interesting things based on WordPress, so they are quite capable of promoting a full-fledged, ambitious product.
