Hello, habracommunity. My first successful domain takeover took place. And today I’ll tell you what I learned during the backorder process, my observations and how to get a good occupied domain.

Why do you need a backorder?

Popular domain zones (.com, .net, .org) contain the shortest and most resonant domains.
It is possible not to use free second-class domains, but to intercept a good one. Even three-letter domains are often released, the minimum cost of which on the secondary market is $17,800.

If the domain is no longer needed by the owner, after a while it is released after non-payment. Domains are often released after both cybersquatters - people or companies that en masse register domains for sale - and ordinary users. In such cases, services for deferred domain order (backorder) help intercept it.

Domain life cycle

The life cycle of a domain is clearly shown in the diagram above.

Despite popular prejudice, the domain is not released immediately after non-payment. During the renewal grace period (status - Expired, lasts 0−45 days depending on the registrar), the domain can be renewed at normal cost. After it, a recovery period begins (status - Redemption Period or Pending Delete Restorable, lasts 30 days), during which you can renew the domain for the cost of 5-10 registrations. Only after these periods, in case of non-renewal, the domain is removed from the registry within 5 days. Before the domain is released, backorder services flood the registrar with applications for domain registration.

You can check the status of a domain using the whois protocol. To do this, you can use online tools: for example, whois.com. But personally, I recommend using a command line utility, since often requests from sites (for example, GoDaddy) are sold to third parties. Download link: www.nirsoft.net/utils/whoiscl.html. You need to download it, unpack it, and drop the .exe file into the user’s folder. Afterwards, the command “whois domainname.com” will be available from the command line

Why is it better to use services

You can only register a domain with a complete lack of competition manually. To buy a domain without delay, you need to be a registrar, so the chance of getting it manually is extremely low. Backorder services check domain availability 3-5 times per second. If you write a script to check using the registrar's API at this speed, your account will simply be banned for excessively frequent requests. Backorder is a process that requires well-established logistics and accredited registrars, so it is better to use services: for example, DropCatch has 1201 registrars.

Backorder services

Now let's go through the services for the backorder. There are three most popular ones, with approximately the same power. Their application is free, payment is only made if you become the owner of the domain.

-NameJet
Cost: $80
Private auction
- SnapNames
Cost: $80
Private auction
- DropCatch
Cost: $60
Public auction

Another popular smaller service: Pheenix. It has two tariffs: Super Saver and Gold, for .com domains the cost is $21 and $60, respectively. Gold backorders for Pheenix take precedence over Super Saver. It works on an advance payment basis: if the domain is not caught, you can put it on another one.

Backorder services are also provided by GoDaddy: according to reviews on NamePros.com, it works weaker than other backorder services and often places domains on a public auction. The payment principle is similar to Pheenix.

Regardless of the service, after registration, to confirm the card, services block up to $1 on it. The amount is returned within 10 days, depending on the bank.

How best to order a domain

Now the trick. If you don’t really need the domain, and you want to take the risk of picking it up manually, before doing this, check whether it is in the NameJet, SnapNames auctions, or whether it is in the DropCatch database. If the answer to all three questions is no, you have a pretty good chance.

If the domain is only available in DropCatch, which often happens, install a backorder with them. Otherwise, they will capture it and it will go to HugeDomains, a DropCatch partner, where the price will be greatly increased: domains with an approximate cost of $70, according to EstiBot, are sold there for at least $2,000.

With DropCatch, you can submit your application at any time before the deadline - the stakes are hidden. If the domain in a public auction, for example, in NameJet it is called Last Chance, in SnapNames - Expired, it is advisable to place a bid 15 minutes before the end.

My advice is not to use the DropCatch discount club and place a request at full price: according to reviews from the popular forum NamePros.com, many people have this situation: DropCatch catches a domain, but sends it not to the person who sent the request, but to HugeDomains.

If the domain is available in all three services, apply for a backorder to them. The more applications there are in different services, the greater the likelihood of successfully catching a domain.

The story of my backorder

Now to the history of my backorder. For the future domain, it was important to have the keyword “seo”, and after reviewing the whois of all domains with this keyword with two letters before and after, and all English words with 3 and 4 letters, I came to the conclusion that all sonorous domains are occupied . Therefore, I had to catch it.

The domain was caught by DropCatch for me. There were no other backorders for the domain, so it went straight to me without an auction for $60. The maximum time for submitting an application was until 20:45, at 21:11 a message about a successful capture was received. About half a day later the domain appeared in the control panel.

If you have personal experience or any suggestions on how to supplement the article, I will be glad to hear from you in the comments.
