Detailed test of six browsers. The fastest browser according to test results

The browser is the main program on the computer today, so your overall productivity largely depends on the speed of its operation. A slow browser can not only slow down your work, but also greatly affect your mood, as there is nothing more annoying than endlessly loading pages while surfing. In this article, you will learn about tools that will help you check the speed of your browser and compare it with competitors.

Peacekeeper

Peacekeeper is one of the most widely known browser testing tools. And this is not surprising, because Futuremark, the developers of 3DMark and PCMark, had a hand in its creation. In addition to testing JavaScript execution speed, Peacekeeper also tests HTML 5 compatibility and video playback. Peacekeeper runs the test for about five minutes, and when it's finished it gives you an overall rating of your browser's speed.

Internet Explorer Test Drive

Internet Explorer Test Drive is a benchmark from Microsoft. It is designed to measure browser performance and offers dozens of different tests on the start page to check the processing speed of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Although, as the name implies, this collection of tests is optimized for IE, it works quite successfully in other browsers.

Octane

Octane 2.0 is the latest version of Google's browser benchmark. It contains a set of standard tests to determine whether the program supports all advanced technologies and how quickly they can perform them. After running the test, your browser goes through a series of sequential tasks, resulting in a final final score.

Dromaeo

Mozilla also did not remain aloof from testing the browser for speed. The Firefox developers have released their own test package called Dromaeo, which, however, is based on the well-known SunSpider test. With it, you can test your browser's performance in tasks involving JavaScript. Dromaeo may take a significant amount of time to measure, however it displays very detailed information about the test results.

Speed battle

This is a free online service for measuring browser speed and computer performance. With its help, you can not only find out how many parrots your browser scores in the proposed tests, but also get access to general measurement statistics. This will allow you, based on the results of thousands of tests, to obtain reliable proof that Firefox is the fastest browser of all today.

HTML5 Test

This test gives you an idea of how well your browser supports the HTML5 standard and its related specifications. The final score is calculated based on the sum of the points scored for supporting each individual HTML5 feature.

Browsermark

Unlike several previous tests created by browser manufacturers and therefore raising certain doubts about their objectivity, this package was created by independent developers and therefore deserves our attention. The service is focused on measuring performance in real-life tasks using CSS, DOM, Graphics, JavaScript and frameworks.

Well, now that the weapons have been distributed and the bets have been made, it’s time, gentlemen, to move on to the duel. So, which browser is smarter, more beautiful and faster than everyone else? Please support your arguments with screenshots of test results.

The Internet Explorer browser has a built-in blocker for pop-ups and ads.

3. Mozilla Firefox

Mozilla Firefox is free and one of the fastest browsers for accessing the Internet. Recently, it has been in great demand among users, as it is the safest and fastest for surfing the Internet. Mozilla Firefox is equipped with a reverse browsing mode, which allows the user to visit sites without fear that his confidential information will be compromised. It is also important that the Mozilla Firefox browser takes up little RAM and is supported on almost all mobile devices and computers. Like many other browsers, Mozilla Firefox saves logins and passwords even when more than one person uses the browser. This increases the risk of intrusion into private information. Therefore, a password master was developed to solve the problem. Its job is to protect passwords with a special code.

2. Yandex browser

Yandex browser takes 2nd place in the top 10 fastest web browsers. It has a fairly simple and quick installation on all computers with the Windows operating system. Yandex browser loads web pages at the highest possible speed, but if it seems insufficient to the user, then he can always set “turbo mode”. Thanks to the presence of Protect technology, the Yandex browser prevents viruses from getting onto your computer, and also protects information about passwords and bank card data from fraudsters. Therefore, this browser can be considered one of the safest and fastest.

    Ads and Presets

    Opera

After switching from the Presto engine to Blink, many fans of the old 12th Opera were unhappy with the loss of some of the usual functionality and individuality: the built-in torrent, email client, RSS reader, mouse gesture control were gone, bookmarks were replaced with a “piggy bank”. Some people switched to other browsers: over 2 years, according to Liveinternet statistics, the number of Opera users in Russia decreased by a quarter. The developers promised to return the old functionality over time. What does Opera look like 2.5 years after the engine change?

Platforms: Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Android. Versions of Opera Mini and Opera Mobile for popular mobile platforms: Symbian OS, MeeGo, Java, Android, Windows Mobile, bada, iOS.

According to test results from Sauce Labs, Firefox is the most stable browser at the end of 2014. More than 55 million launches of popular browsers of different versions were carried out, errors in Firefox appeared only in 0.11% of cases. Internet Explorer performed the worst (0.25%), and of the latest versions - Safari 6 (0.12%). With the release of each version, the number of crashes decreases; they are almost absent in the latest Chrome and Firefox.

Platform: Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux, Android. There are unofficial builds for many other OSes.

Import from Internet Explorer and Chrome.

Synchronization of bookmarks, passwords, tabs, history, add-ons, settings.

Since July 2015, Firefox has blocked Adobe Flash by default to increase security.

    Ads and Presets

Developer Mozilla is a non-profit organization.

    Internet Explorer

The standard browser known to all Windows users is Internet Explorer. It does not need to be downloaded when installing the OS, but it is recommended to update to the latest version - 11.0. In Windows 10, it was replaced by Microsoft Edge, written from scratch. Partly because of its bad reputation: netizens joke that it was invented to download other browsers.

IE is significantly inferior to modern browsers in functionality and interface; it loads pages slowly; many web development standards are not supported, which is why sites may not be displayed correctly. In the latest versions these shortcomings have been improved.

However, if you add up all versions of IE from the top 10 Russian Internet browsers, it is used by 10.5% of network users. Explorer can be compared to an old “calls only” telephone. The main function (website browsing) works, nothing extra.

The default setting is Bing search, which is unusual for Russian users.
IE 8 startup speed is 4.5 seconds. IE 11 starts in 7 seconds.
IE 8 scored 219 points in Peacekeeper.

    Microsoft Edge

The default browser in Windows 10 is Microsoft Edge (at first it was called Project Spartan).

Modern minimalistic interface. Goes well with the Windows 10 interface. The toolbar contains only the essentials - the rest of the buttons are hidden in the sidebar. By the way, the list of options and settings in the browser is minimal.

The browser runs on the new EdgeHTML engine with the Chakra javascript interpreter.

Ability to take notes and drawings on top of web pages and share them. This doesn't exist in any browser yet.

When you select text, Edge recognizes the type of data and offers customized solutions. For example, when you highlight a phone number, it will offer to call.

The smart address bar provides search results for some queries without going to the site.

Reading mode. The page is cleared of everything unnecessary, leaving only text and photos. You can save articles you like to your reading list. The function is similar to the Pocket service.

The browser does not support extensions, but they were promised to be added in new versions at the end of 2015. This is the main drawback, without which Edge cannot fully fight its competitors. There is not even a banal Adblock yet. To block ads, you can now use a separate program - Adguard, but it is paid.

According to unconfirmed information, Edge will support not only extensions from the Windows Store, but also from the Chrome store.

There is a button for feedback from the developers in a prominent place.

    Safety

The built-in SmartScreen filter blocks potentially dangerous sites.

Each tab is isolated - it opens in a separate process, just like in Chromium.

    Ads and Presets

Bing search is used - this is also a Microsoft project. The search cannot be changed.

Adobe Flash is already built into the browser (can be disabled in the settings), but a similar technology from Microsoft - Silverlight - is not supported.

The question of which is the fastest browser has been asked by many computer users. At a time when the Internet was limited to a set of several thousand ordinary HTML pages that could only be read from a monitor, no one was interested in the issue of browser speed. But today, pages on the Internet have become completely interactive. When creating them, new cybernetic technologies are used. The fact is that pages have become “smart”, capable of performing many assigned tasks.

It is not possible to determine the speed of an Internet browser visually. Therefore, to answer the question posed, several tests were carried out on the speed of data processing, in a variety of directions.

In our opinion, important criteria for assessing the question of which browser is the fastest are the performance of the JAVA, FLASH, HTML5 processing tests, as well as the volume and CPU load that the browser uses in its work.

Our studies used the latest versions of browsers.

RAM usage test

To conduct a memory load test, we opened 10 tabs in each browser. The contents of the tabs are very different, but in each browser everything was done symmetrically. All tested programs opened the same links in the same sequence. After that, the results of loading the RAM were recorded in a table.

As a result of the test, the following data was obtained:

  • Internet Explorer – 956 MB
  • Firefox – 471 MB
  • Google Chrome – 810 MB
  • OPERA - 688 MB

We opened only 10 tabs, since usually users work with so many open tabs at the same time. Of course, individual users work with a large number of tabs, but conducting a test with 50 tabs open is impractical.

Note: after more than 10 tabs were opened out of curiosity, there was a slight slowdown in the response in the Google Chrome and Internet Explorer browsers. But not much.

Java Script Execution Test

This test is to determine how quickly the program performs the tasks assigned when executing popular scripts. Of course, each browser was given an equal task on the same computer.

JAVA execution test results:

  • Internet Explorer – 15012 ms
  • Firefox – 10012 ms
  • Google Chrome – 9657
  • OPERA - 14750 ms

In this test, Google Chrome looks like the clear leader. It completed the tasks posed by the popular programming language with a noticeable time advantage.

Flash execution test

We decided to conduct a test for FLASH execution, because, despite the fact that the technology today is the most difficult in terms of system requirements, there is no alternative to it yet and it is widely used on the Internet.

FLASH execution test result:

  • Internet Explorer – 14 fsp
  • Firefox – 12 fsp
  • Google Chrome – 13 fsp
  • OPERA - 10 fsp

The results of this test show that IE works better with FLASH than all other browsers. But Google Chrome lagged behind quite a bit.

HTML5 Execution Test

This test will give an adequate score in points (maximum on a scale of 555 points) of how well the browser handles HTML5 tasks. To conduct tests in browsers, all pages were closed and only the link to the test was opened. The check was carried out in the “idle mode” of the browser.

HTML5 execution test results:

  • Internet Explorer – 43 points (out of 555)
  • Firefox – 442 points (out of 555)
  • Google Chrome – 469 points (out of 555)
  • OPERA - 432 points (out of 555)

conclusions

Based on the overall assessment of the tests performed, we can safely say that Google Chrome is a leader in the "fast and good browser" category.

OPERA and Firefox share second place, as they do not differ much in performance.

But Internet Explorer could not please us with anything. Although it is worth noting that he won the Flash test by a wide margin. Apparently, this is its only advantage))

What is this for, you ask? First of all, for normal and productive work on the Internet, I’m generally silent about nerve cells... Who likes it when program windows open slowly, with freezing and similar phenomena.

How to check browser speed

In this article I will present several services.

Browsermark

Go to the website, click the “Start” button.

The analysis will take some time (from 3 to 20 minutes), after which the report will be displayed.

Speed battle

This free service provides the opportunity, based on the performance of thousands of tests performed, not only check browser speed, and answer one of the most common questions, which is the fastest, but also find out the performance of your computer.

Peacekeeper

Perhaps the most popular resource in this area.

Click on the button on the helmet “Test your browser”. And after about 5 minutes the result will be displayed.

This is where the processes are most interesting to observe. We will be presented with 3D images, cartoon sketches, videos with beautiful landscapes, various photographs and light psychedelia.

HTML5 Test

This is not about testing the web browser, but testing compatibility with HTML5. The test consists of 32 points.

By checking them, you will find out what your browser is capable of and what it is not.

Internet Explorer Test Drive

I was wondering whether this Beachmark from Microsoft was included in the list or not, and I also decided to talk a little about it.

Dromaeo

The Mozilla developers also did not stand aside and released their brainchild.

The idea, however, was taken from SunSpider. The main task is to check the browser for scripts. The process takes quite a long time, but this is compensated by the detailed result.

Why is the browser slow?

There are several main reasons here:

  • computer is infected with viruses
  • old version of web browser
  • browser cache is clogged
  • Windows crashes
  • incompatible applications

Based on the problems listed above, it is not difficult to guess how to get out of the situation.

  • Scan your PC for viruses
  • reinstall browser
  • remove conflicting utilities
