Description of the Sony Xperia line: all models that have earned respect, characteristics and reviews. Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact - Review of smartphones with new designs and technologies

Sony Mobile has updated its Xperia series with the new flagship Sony Xperia XZ2, no longer a rectangular slab with sharp edges, but an updated design with a domed rear panel. The company also announced the Sony XZ2 Compact, which is also equipped with many features, but is offered in a smaller body and with a different design.

Yes, you heard right. For the first time in 6 years, Sony has finally redesigned its smartphones. Let's take a look at the Xperia XZ2 first.

Ergonomic design

Sony has finally embraced the smartphone trend where the edges around the screen are minimized in favor of more panel real estate. The bezels aren't as thin as the Galaxy S9, but they are significantly smaller than the Xperia XZ1.

The Sony Xperia XZ2 phone is a monolith consisting of two Gorilla Glass 5 panels and a metal frame between them. The curved edges as well as the curved back make the phone fit comfortably in the palm of your hand, but the 5.7-inch screen size makes it a little bulky.

The power button and volume key are located on the right side. There is also a hardware camera control key there. The opposite side is devoid of functional elements.

At the bottom there is a USB Type-C charging port and a microphone. At the top we see a slot for two SIM cards or nano-SIM and memory cards up to 400 GB, as well as an additional microphone for noise reduction. On the back side there is a camera lens enclosed in a steel ring, a flash eye and a fingerprint scanner, which is located in the center.

I think the Xperia's refreshed design is a solid step in the right direction. The new Xperia XZ2 looks sleek and modern. The smartphone is available in several color options: blue (according to Sony, dark green), silver, black and pink.

HDR display and specifications

Sony Xperia XZ2 is equipped with a 5.7-inch screen with an aspect ratio of 18:9 and a resolution of 2160x1080 pixels. At first glance, the display looks sharp and very colorful, although more testing is needed to get a definitive understanding.

The screen supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) for higher, richer colors when viewing HDR content from video apps. The only thing that can interfere with pleasant viewing is the availability of the video, which depends on the region and the speed of your Internet.

It's all powered by the latest Snapdragon 845 processor, which is 30% faster and more efficient than last year's Snapdragon 835. The Xperia XZ2 comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, which can be expanded via MicroSD cards.

Operating system and battery

The Sony Xperia XZ2 runs Android 8.0 Oreo, and while I'm glad to see the latest version of Android, Sony's user interface is too cluttered with unnecessary pre-installed apps.

The new Xperia XZ2 comes with a 3180mAh battery, which is larger than the Samsung Galaxy S9. The XZ2 was the company's first model to support wireless charging using the Qi standard, and the IP68 protection rating allows the gadget to be submerged to a depth of 1.5 m for up to 30 minutes.

Additional features of Xperia XZ2

Here I would also like to note another interesting new feature that the XZ2 received – the Dynamic Vibration System. Essentially, it's a powerful drive that uses strong vibration to highlight certain moments when watching movies or playing games.

This vibration response is very reminiscent of the PS4 controller. While listening to music, in order to avoid constant vibration and save battery, it is better to disable this function.

Sony Xperia XZ2 is equipped with a 19-megapixel main camera with dual LED flash and a new 4K HDR video recording function. The photo module here is equipped with its own 4 GB memory for caching, which allows you to load data into it at a speed of up to 25 GB/s and shoot video in Super Slow Mo mode at a speed of 960 frames per second, in HD or FullHD format.

But, to save memory, the time for slow-motion frames has been reduced from 6 to 3 seconds, and in low light conditions this function does not work quite correctly. There is also standard slow motion at 120 frames per second.

The Xperia XZ2's Smart Capture feature automatically takes multiple frames and prompts the user to select the best shot. And the continuous shooting function with autofocus tracking allows you to take many clear photos of fast-moving objects.

The 3D Creator application, which works in conjunction with the front camera, allows you to create 3D models of objects and people's faces. Now these photos can be shared directly through Facebook, as well as printed on a 3D printer or placed as avatars in certain games.

What's different about the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact?

The Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact is the opposite of the modern and sleek Xperia XZ2. My first impression is a blast from the past. It also uses an 18:9 aspect ratio and has thin bezels around the screen, but this 5-inch phone feels, while more compact, comically thick.

If you're looking for a smartphone that's powerful and tiny, the Xperia XZ2 Compact fits into every pocket.

The main difference between the XZ2 Compact and the XZ2 is the size. Also, the Compact version does not have a dynamic vibration system and does not support wireless charging technology, and due to the smaller body size, it is equipped with a battery with a smaller capacity - 2780 mAh.

Bottom line

The characteristics of the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact are almost the same as those of its larger brother, the Sony Xperia XZ2, so the price should not differ much. Sony has not yet announced the exact price of the flagships; it will become known during the start of sales of new products.

These new Xperia pair are really good phones that will be available in late spring 2018.

Sony Xperia Z, Z1, Z2, Z3, Z5 - how not to get confused when listing modifications of smartphones released over the past 3 years? And this is not counting versions like Compact, Ultra or Premium, which also exist in the line of the Japanese brand.

To make life more interesting and fun, Sony came up with the X series, which is also not simple and consists of several smartphones: XA is a simpler option, X is middle class, X Performance is the top, and XA Ultra is king-size for lovers of everything big .

Xperia X or Xperia Z3?

Recently a friend wrote to me and asked, why buy an Xperia X if you can buy an Xperia Z3 or Z3+? The idea of taking last year’s flagships instead of new “mid-rangers” is not new. Therefore, I decided to compare both smartphones to understand what the new Xperia X will do compared to the old model. The price difference between them is about 10-12 thousand rubles, a weighty argument.

Xperia X on the left and Xperia Z3 on the right. find 10 differences

Attack of the Clones

I like the design of Sony smartphones, but the Japanese haven't changed it for many years, so it's easy to get confused about the phones. Look at the photos, Xperia X is very similar to Xperia Z3+. They have almost identical dimensions, but the Xperia X is slightly smaller and noticeably lighter. I explain this by the fact that the screen size here is more modest: 5 inches versus 5.2.

The design of the Xperia X will please Sony fans, but if you are not a fan of the Japanese brand, you will get confused among a bunch of similar phones.

The sides in both cases are made of aluminum, but the Xperia X does not have plastic inserts at the corners, which, in theory, take the impact when dropped. But I doubt that this saves in cases where the glass body flies onto the asphalt.

Aluminum vs glass, a win-win choice in any case

After all, the back surface of the Xperia X is made of aluminum, while the Z3+ has glass. What's better? I like the matte finish better; it doesn’t get dirty at all compared to a stained glass plane. But the glass has a beautiful glare, which the Xperia X cannot boast of. Practicality vs beauty, this is the eternal torment of choice.

The volume button on the Xperia X has moved down, you confuse it with the power button and often press it in the wrong place out of habit. I think that the Z3+ had a more convenient key layout, but apparently due to the addition of a scanner, the entire design was redesigned.

The Xperia Z3+ does not have a fingerprint scanner; it appeared in the Z5; the Xperia X also inherited this useful feature. True, we had to sacrifice the signature round shape - the power key became flat. Sony is the only company that integrates a scanner on the side. Mostly it is added to the central button under the screen (Apple, Samsung, HTC, Moto) or on the back surface (Huawei and thousands of Chinese brands). It’s more intuitive for me to press the button under the screen, but after a week I got used to the Xperia X’s button layout.

The scanner works well, but there were cases when it did not work the first time. I had to enter a password to get to my data. But there were very few such cases, so I will not suffer on this score.

For the scanner to work, you must press a physical button, otherwise it will not work. But if the screen backlight is on, then a light touch is enough; you don’t need to press the button until it clicks. It's a shame that this feature doesn't work when the screen is locked.

Juicy, bright, Full HD

The new Xperia X has curved screen glass at the edges, 2.5D looks and feels nicer than simple flat glass. It is enough to move your finger over it to feel all this difference for yourself. The screen has a good oleophobic coating in all cases, the finger glides as it should.

In my opinion, the picture quality is comparable to previous Xperia models; if you don’t like the default settings, you can set the colors manually.

It's a pity, but Sony didn't give the Xperia X a frameless design, the frames are the same as the Z3. But there is protection from moisture, but the Xperia X does not have it; swimming in the sink is fatal for it. Due to the fact that the screen size is not very large, the phone is convenient to operate with one hand. The Xperia X is comparable to the Galaxy S6, but due to its angular shape, the Japanese phone looks more massive than the Korean one.

Xperia X is on the left, Xperia Z3 is on the right, don’t confuse it

Two days without an outlet

I didn't expect anything special from the Xperia X with a 2620 mAh battery. It turned out that I was wrong and the phone pleasantly surprised me by working longer than I expected. On average, I got 2 days of work with 4.5-5 hours of active screen. When idle, the phone practically does not explode.

But I noticed that as soon as I turn on LTE, the device sits down faster. Perhaps this is due to the non-final Sony firmware, because... I have not noticed a similar situation with other devices. Z3 works less, it took me about one day. A triumph of technology.

I’ll also note that Sony has a convenient Stamina function, which is responsible for energy saving and turns off “unnecessary” processes to save battery.

Don't jerk when you don't ask

The compartment for the nano-SIM and memory card of the Xperia X is located on the side under a flap. Moreover, if you even slightly lift it, the phone goes into reboot, believing that they invariably want to pull out one of the cards from it. Xperia X will appear in a version with a single SIM card, but there will also be a dual-SIM version, where you can install a microSD instead of a second card.

I have no complaints about the speaker, I can hear people well, but I would like the ringer to be more powerful. Here it is quiet and calls are easy to miss.

Naturally, LTE is present, everything is in order. NFC helps you pay for purchases from your phone, I tried the service together with a Tinkoff card, everything works. At the same time, I was surprised that the seemingly progressive Alfa Bank does not know how to perform such an operation.

Fast smartphone

There is a sign with the test results for everyone. For comparison with the Xperia X, I took the Xperia Z3, last year's Samsung Galaxy S6, which fits within this budget. And the new Alcatel Idol 4s with features like the Xperia X.

The Xperia X has a mid-range processor; the Qualcomm 650 is comparable in power to last year's top-end chips, but inferior to them in graphics. The sensations are exactly the same as after getting acquainted with Alcatel: the test performance is adequate. But the software is still somewhat damp: sometimes the gallery slows down, sometimes the browser suddenly gets stuck.

Xperia X received 32 GB of internal memory, 20 GB of which remains for personal needs; if this is not enough, then a microSD slot will help increase the space. The smartphone has received an updated shell; it is significantly different from the one found in the Xperia Z3, although they have the same version of Android. Both are on version 6. I think it would be fair to devote a separate article to the shell, there is a lot to talk about there.

I liked the phone for its sound quality, but the headphone headroom is not very large; for the metro you need to choose headphones with good noise insulation.

Reactive camera, but crude software

In theory, the Xperia X is the new star of the mobile photography world. The phone has a new autofocus system, when we point the camera at an object, and it “guides” it until we press the shutter button. In the language of photographers, this is “shooting with wiring.” I tried it in cars on a cloudy day, the camera blurs the background well, leaving the object sharp. But how often do we film vehicles? I - no, much more often than children. But the problem with them is that it can be difficult to photograph a nimble child indoors. The camera also does not always focus on objects nearby.

I was impressed by the quick shooting function, which we enable in the settings. Then from the moment you press the shutter button until the photo is taken, it takes half a second. A dedicated shooting key is a separate plus for Sony; few people add this button to smartphones. But the Japanese thought everything through and this key is there for a reason, it helps you take pictures very quickly, without wasting time on unlocking.

The examples show how the camera “washes” along the left edge, I’ll attribute this to pre-production software or a defective module, unfortunately this happens. In general, I liked the camera, the phone takes pictures very well during the day, but in the evening the quality drops, and the lag behind flagships like the LG G4 or Samsung Galaxy S6 is noticeable. But they can be bought for the same money that they ask for the Xperia X.

Compared to the Xperia Z3, the new Xperia X has become more accurate in rendering colors, and the white balance works better. But there is noticeably more noise in the pictures. I think these are software flaws. I was also surprised that HDR is practically not noticeable in operation; when you turn on this option, when not, there is almost no difference.

Here we have a comparison with the Xperia Z3, the difference with the wide-angle optics of the Xperia X is clearly visible. In the example below, problems with the left side of the image are noticeable. I also think that Sony followed the path of Samsung and went into high-sharpness images. And at the same time they added a portion of noise to the pictures.

A bunch of pictures in different conditions for your reference.

Z3 Vs Xperia X

Pros of Z3:

  • water protection
  • more convenient ergonomics
  • update to Android 6.0
  • lower price
  • 4K video recording
  • strap holder

Pros Xperia X

  • fingerprint scanner
  • new shell and Android 6.0
  • The camera focuses faster
  • works longer
  • higher LTE speed
  • aluminum finish is more practical than glass

Opinion

For comparison with the Xperia X, you could take other Sony smartphones: not only the Z3, but also the Z3+, Z5 can become an alternative to this model. At least they cost less, take photos at a comparable level, and the difference in performance is not very big.

I think that 39,990 rubles for Sony Xperia X is a lot. Sony wants to compete on equal terms with Samsung, but last year's Galaxy S6 can be bought for the same money as the Xperia X, it will be better in all respects. Or consider the Galaxy A5, which costs about 25 thousand rubles, as an option.

Sony Xperia X is more expensive than its classmates with other comparable qualities, so the brand name alone cannot impress. So my friend looked at the Xperia X, touched the Xperia Z3 and ordered an iPhone 6.

Characteristics

The Japanese corporation Sony entered the consumer mobile electronics market solo in 2012, and the experience was more than successful. The smartphones of the NXT line presented to the public have occupied their niche as stylish and productive devices. Two of them - Sony Xperia P and Sony Xperia S - each became leaders in their segment. It is noteworthy that both of them demonstrate their zest, meeting the needs of the audience, although they are similar in appearance even in design refinements: a transparent insert under the screen is the main image feature of the entire line.

Introduction to Sony Xperia P and Sony Xperia S

Sony Xperia P is a smartphone communicator in the mid-price segment, running the Android operating system and adopting a platform with a dual-core processor with a frequency of 1 GHz, 16 GB of flash and 1 GB of RAM, two camera modules of 8 MP and 0.3 MP. The screen diagonal of this model is 4 inches, and it itself has unique quality characteristics. The manufacturer has focused on the quality of materials: the Sony Xperia P has an all-metal body.
Sony Xperia S is a flagship-level Android model with a dual-core processor with a frequency of 1.5 GHz, 32 GB of flash, 1 GB of RAM and a main camera with a resolution of 12 megapixels (front 1.3 megapixels). The screen diagonal is 4.3 inches, and the matrix is created using new proprietary technologies that provide high image quality.

Comparison of Sony Xperia P and Sony Xperia S

If you look at the Sony Xperia P and Sony Xperia S at the same time, you can talk about a significant difference in size. Sony Xperia P is more compact than the older model: 1 mm thinner, 24 g lighter, 4.5 mm narrower and 6 mm shorter. Accordingly, the screen on the S is larger – 4.3 inches versus a full 4 inches. The transparent insert on the younger model is functional: it contains touch control buttons, while the flagship has only button icons on it, and they themselves are located a little higher. As for the body materials, the Sony Xperia P looks better here, although the cost of this smartphone is lower: the body is all-metal, made of aluminum alloy, created by laser cutting. The other smartphone is made of plastic and has a removable back cover, under which a microSim slot is hidden. Both models have a non-removable battery and cannot use memory cards.
The displays are the main technological delights of the Sony Xperia P and Sony Xperia S. The younger model boasts a fantastic resolution of 960 x 540 for the segment, as well as the use of unique WhiteMagic technology: four subpixels provide remarkable brightness and energy efficiency. This magnificence is covered with tempered Coming Gorilla glass. Sony Xperia S did not receive such features, but we see a qualitative improvement: with a diagonal of 4.3 inches, the screen resolution is a full 1280 x 720, the pixel density is higher (341 ppi versus 275 ppi). Flagship users can take advantage of Bravia Engine technology to improve image quality.
In terms of performance and functionality, of course, the flagship Sony Xperia S wins. It has a faster processor (1.5 GHz versus 1 GHz) and a larger flash drive, which in the absence of memory cards can become a priority when choosing. Both the main and front cameras shoot in higher resolution. The Sony Xperia P camera does not support 3D effects, and it has a single flash, while the older model has a double flash.

TheDifference.ru determined that the difference between Sony Xperia P and Sony Xperia S is as follows:

Positioning Sony Xperia S as a flagship, Sony Xperia P as a mid-ranger.
Sony Xperia P is smaller and lighter.
Sony Xperia P has an all-metal body, Sony Xperia S has a plastic body.
The Sony Xperia S touch buttons are located above a transparent insert, and only symbols are on it.
The Sony Xperia S has a larger screen and higher resolution and pixel density.
Bravia Engine technology is only available on the Sony Xperia S.
The Sony Xperia P screen uses unique WhiteMagic technology.
The Sony Xperia P screen is covered with tempered glass.
Sony Xperia S shows high performance.
The Sony Xperia S has twice as much internal memory.
Both Sony Xperia S cameras shoot at higher resolutions than the cameras of the younger model.

Sony Xperia smartphones, all models of which have their own characteristics, appeared after the termination of the agreement with Ericsson.

Sony Mobile (formerly known as Sony Ericsson Mobile) is a division of electronics giant Sony Corporation.

Xperia is a unique model range of the company, which was initially released running Windows Mobile OS.

Then technical management decided to switch to .

At the moment, this line occupies a strong niche in today's market.

Some of the company's smartphones may benefit from being waterproof and moisture-resistant.

All Xperia models

The Japanese giant is one of the world's largest manufacturers of mobile devices; every year they completely update their line.

Their sleek, sophisticated design and serious technical characteristics attract new fans year after year.

Over the past few years, this manufacturer has often experimented with its new products, delighting its followers with both premium flagships and very budget models.

Everyone could find a sample for every taste and budget.

In the last 2 years alone, the company has launched 12 models on the market. Not to mention the lighter versions.

At the beginning of 2016, at MWC 2016, the company announced that it was completely relaunching the line of gadgets beloved by many.

According to the company, Xperia (which stands for experience) smartphones should provide users with a unique experience of interaction between gadgets and their owners.

It is these updated devices that our review will be devoted to.

First, let's divide them by year. Separately, it is worth noting that we will not separate them by colors and modifications with different memory capacities.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium

Those expecting a revolution in XZ Premium design will be disappointed.

Over the years, designs have become more refined, and loyal fans have realized the high value of corporate recognition. This is not just a recognizable trademark, it is a brand.

The company has certainly focused on the details for the new XZ Premium.

The main innovation is support for 960fps video playback.

This frame rate is still out of reach for many manufacturers.

Not many people at MWC could boast of this advantage.

To manage such a high video frame rate, which clearly outshines the performance of other devices and even last year's own flagship 4K action camera, it was necessary to install the FDR-X3000.

This is the patented know-how of the digital imaging department.

Cameras such as the RX1000 IV are famous for its use. It's all about its memory and array of sensors that allow it to capture images faster.

XZ Premium is equipped with the most powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC.

At first glance, the XZ "Premium" looks similar to last year's Xperia XZ. To give it a more expensive look, engineers used .

Moving on to the specifications, the XZ Premium features a 5.5-inch Triluminos HDR display with 4K (2160x3840) resolution.

The gadget is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 (Gigabit LTE speed is achieved through the use of an X16 LTE modem).

Also installed in the device is an Adreno 540 GPU video chip and 4 GB. 64 GB of internal memory, which is expandable via microSD cards (up to 256 GB).

The front of the device has a 13-megapixel camera with a 1/3.06-inch Exmor RS sensor. The phone OS is Android 7.0 Nougat, the battery capacity is 3230mAh.

In fact, we can talk about this excellent flagship for a very long time.

On the Internet there are photographs of copies that showed more than 150 thousand points in the Antutu test. This is a very impressive result.

Without a doubt, this flagship will excite the minds of users of modern gadgets for a long time.

Surely it will be compared with devices with similar characteristics. But we can say with confidence that at the time of writing this review it is the best.
