Review of the iOS11 operating system. Review of the iOS11 operating system Phones supporting iOS 11

iOS 11 Review

The new iOS 11 was presented to the public in June of this year. A full-fledged version of the system has replaced iOS 10. Let's take a closer look at the new iOS 11: date and supported devices.

On June 5, the world-famous WWDC conference was held in San Jose (California), at which Tim Cook and leading Apple developers presented the new iOS 11 to the world. All new functions and features of the system were also described at the event.

A few hours after the developer conference, a beta version of the new operating system became available to iPhone and iPad users.

Gadget support

Tim Cook was expected to confirm the end of support for the fifth series of smartphones. And so it happened, iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c do not support the new system.

Supported Devices:

  • iPhone 6;
  • iPhone 6 Plus;
  • iPad Air (both generations);
  • iPod touch 6G;
  • The entire iPhone 7 line;
  • iPad (9.7, 12.9 and 10.5 inch gadgets only);
  • iPad mini (2, 3, 4 generations).

Installing the new iOS 11

You can install a new operating system only if your device is on the list of supported gadgets and does not have a jailbreak installed. To install IOS 11, the latest official version of the system must be installed on your smartphone – IOS 10.3.

You can download the update in two ways:

  • "by air". All you need is a smartphone or tablet and a fast Internet connection;
  • Using iTunes. Requires a wired connection between the phone and PC, as well as Internet access from the computer.

Let's take a closer look at how to install iOS 11. To update to iOS 11 over the air, go to your smartphone's settings. Open the “Basic” tab and click on the “Profile” item. Then check your connection to the global network and press the “Install updates” button. The phone will be turned off, and then the installation procedure for the new OS will begin.

To install iOS 11 using iTunes, connect your mobile gadget to your computer and wait for it to be identified by iTunes. Then, in the main application window, click on the “Update” button and wait until the installation of the beta version of the new system from Apple is completed.

5 problems with iOS 11

In the first days after the public distribution of the OS, users noted several negative qualities in the design and functionality of the system:

  • Control Center design. This system window has undergone changes. The developers added more icons and did not finalize the final appearance of the options;

  • The 3D Touch App switcher is no longer available on iOS. Now users cannot quickly access the latest open applications;
  • Problems with the Drag and Drop function. This option has become a long-awaited new product, however, its operation is not yet stable enough. While dragging explorer elements, an error often appears;
  • Cluttered Notification Center. Users note that in future versions it would be better to separate notifications into groups and individual programs.

Overall, the new iOS 11 has a clear and functional design, and new features promise to make working with the gadget even simpler and more interesting.

This is a detailed overview of all the new features and changes in iOS 11. For those who do not want to spend a lot of time, we have also prepared as much as possible.

Design

The first thing that catches your eye is the new status line. The network signal strength indicator dots have been replaced by more compact sticks, which many have missed since the days of iOS 7. The battery indicator has also undergone changes, but not as dramatic. They just added a translucent outline to it.

The labels for icons in the Dock have disappeared, and it has become more airy. At first it’s a little unusual, but then you realize that this is the right and logical step - it’s simply impossible to get confused in applications that you open dozens of times a day.

But the fonts in the captions of the remaining icons have become more contrasting and readable. Apple abandoned thin, lightweight fonts in favor of bold ones. These were used in the Apple Music app in iOS 10.

The App Store, iTunes Store, and Calculator applications received new icons. The latter even received a redesign of the interface and received nice round buttons. The dialer in the dialer now has the same buttons.

New lock screen

The lock screen has changed a bit. Now, when you press the Home button, the display turns on with a beautiful animation. To view recent notifications, you need to swipe up. Also, the lock screen itself, along with notifications, can be quickly viewed in any application by swiping down from the top edge of the display as usual.

Another innovation is the emergency call function, which is instantly activated if you press the lock button five times in a row. Function parameters and emergency numbers can be set in the settings item of the same name.

New “Control Center”

A big and long-awaited innovation in Control Center - it can finally be customized. For this occasion, Apple has also completely redesigned the menu interface, making it look like a real remote control. The volume and brightness sliders have become larger, and some of the items contain additional menus with advanced functions that are accessible by holding your finger on the icon even on devices without .

Camera and photo

There are three new effects for Live Photos. Playback can be looped, played forward or backward, and you can also apply the “Long Exposure” effect, which will help you simulate a long shutter speed like on an SLR camera.

The camera itself now features new filters, an optimized compression format for video that will save space, as well as memory of the previous shooting mode and a QR code scanner. In the Photos app, you can turn off face scanning by using the option in Settings.

App Store

Apple's app store has been completely redesigned. In addition to the updated design in a more minimalistic style, the App Store received a new structure, curated selections and articles from editors, as well as a new interface for search, application pages and purchase screens.

Siri

It now has a new icon and design. In addition, the virtual assistant has become smarter and has a more humane voice. From now on, Siri learns itself and remembers what music you listen to in order to suggest new items. It can also be accessed not only by voice, but also by text commands.

iMessage

iMessage has become even more convenient. Apple has added several new effects for messages, expanded the work of add-ons, and also introduced the function of sending money to interlocutors directly through chat. Plus, all your chat history is now stored in the cloud and can be accessed on any of your devices, even the new iPhone 8.

Files app

iCloud Drive has been replaced by a new Files application, which is similar to Finder from macOS. All your documents from iCloud are available in it, and you can also connect Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, Google Drive and other services.

Notes

Built-in Notes have changed for the better, so there is now even less need for third-party solutions. To turn paper documents into digital ones, Apple has added a scanner feature. There are also control gestures, the ability to insert tables and change the paper background - there are several lined options to choose from.

Cards

“Maps” has an updated design and a couple of new features. Now you can use indoor maps to help you navigate inside airports and large shopping centers. Also, thanks to the “Necessary Lane” function, “Maps” will tell you in advance when you need to change lanes to make a turn, and show speed limits right on the display.

The new Do Not Disturb Driver mode will prevent annoying notifications and calls from distracting you from the road. It turns on automatically while driving and mutes all incoming signals. At the same time, anyone who tries to contact you will be warned that you are driving.

Apple Music

The interface improvements have not spared Apple Music either. The app now features friend profiles showing their playlists and music discoveries, as well as the ability to share your favorite tracks. The mini-player on the lock screen also received a more minimalistic and airy design.

QuickType keyboard

The standard on-screen keyboard in iOS 11 has become much more convenient with the QuickType feature. A small but very nice improvement moves the keyboard to the left or right, making it easy to type with one hand. The corresponding menu opens by long pressing the layout switch button. From here you can get to the keyboard settings.

Settings

Several new items have also appeared in the settings themselves. The 1Password-style Accounts and Passwords menu contains your Touch ID-protected logins and passwords. Here you can quickly find, view and change them.

Changes also affected the “Storage” menu. Now it has a visual scale showing the ratio of occupied space between programs, media files, books and mail. Recommendations for various methods are also given here. One of them is unloading unused software, in which applications are temporarily removed from the iPhone, but all their settings are saved with the possibility of full recovery.

AR Kit

New technology allows you to add non-existent objects to the screen using the camera. The corresponding APIs are open to developers. There are already several applications demonstrating the capabilities of the technology. Among them are a virtual fitting room for IKEA furniture, a game based on The Walking Dead, and an application from Giphy that allows you to put GIFs on surrounding objects and take photos with them.

Other

There are also many other innovations. For example, iOS 11 has an automatic iPhone setup feature. To transfer data to a new smartphone, you just need to bring the old one to it.

A quick screenshot editor has also appeared, allowing you to immediately proceed to editing through a small button that appears a few seconds after taking a photo. Basic tools are available, such as cropping, adding signatures, drawings, and other functions familiar from Preview in macOS.

In addition to expanded work with screenshots, it is now possible to record screencasts. The corresponding button is located in the “Control Center”, and after finishing recording the video is saved in the gallery.

It has become more convenient to customize desktop icons. Thanks to the multiple selection function, you can move several icons at once. To do this, you need to start dragging one, and then touch the others.

The proprietary AirPlay technology has been developed. Its second version provides an even smarter approach to controlling your home audio system. You can network multiple speakers or play the same song, choosing the volume for each room.

iPad improvements

Apple has prepared even more interesting innovations for the iPad. With a new Dock that can hold more apps, the tablet will feel even more like a Mac. On the right side of the panel are frequently used applications and recent programs from your other devices, and you can open files and switch between them by simply swiping on the icon.

The redesigned multitasking menu has become much more convenient, which now allows you to quickly move from one application to another, and also remembers combinations of the most recently used applications.

On June 5, at the opening of WWDC 17, Apple announced a new version of the iOS 11 operating system. Registered developers immediately received access to the first beta versions of firmware for mobile devices, participants in public testing will be able to try the new product until the end of the month, and the final release of iOS 11 is scheduled for autumn 2017 of the year.

In order not to keep you waiting, at iguides we have already installed a new version of the operating system on mobile devices and have prepared a list of all changes in design, settings and functionality. Please note that this publication is about the first beta version of iOS 11, so all changes cannot be considered final. During testing, Apple may change the operation of some functions, their availability, and visual design.
Lock screen

At first glance, the lock screen remains unchanged, but something important still happened. For some reason, Apple decided to abandon the right-to-left stroke for notifications. This gesture used to be used for cleaning, but now it doesn't work. There is now only one way to hide a notification - click on it.

Notification Center

In a sense, the traditional Notification Center is no longer there. Apple has made the design of the top curtain indistinguishable from the lock screen; it houses the clock and current notifications, and with a stroke from bottom to top, a list of recent and past events opens.

Home screen

There is only one cosmetic change on the home screen - in the Dock panel the icons now do not have labels. This is logical, because there you place the most important and popular applications, which are easily recognized without accompanying text.

Control center

One of the most radical changes in terms of interface was the iOS 11 Control Center. The bottom curtain now represents one screen and does not require you to swipe to switch between system switches and the music player. Users can now add new buttons to Control Center for quick access to standard applications and change them at their discretion. Pressing firmly on the player, wireless connections, volume and screen brightness blocks will increase their size and gain access to more functions. A new feature has also appeared in the Control Center - screen recording, which allows you to record in video format actions with the operating system, standard and third-party applications. And the last new feature is the Do Not Disturb mode for drivers. Once activated, it automatically recognizes your driving and helps you avoid being distracted by calls, messages and notifications.

System indicators

Instead of round dots, cellular signal quality is now displayed with a classic design - in the form of sticks of different heights. On the other hand, the geolocation icon is now always lit, can appear as an outline when there is no activity, and becomes opaque when applications access location data.

Animations

Minor changes affected the animation, however, the effects were not redesigned throughout the system, but only for some actions. For example, the multitasking panel now appears on the left side with a zoom, and it removes application cards a little differently. Also, when screen activation is enabled when the smartphone is lifted, the display lights up gradually - reminiscent of a gradient or wave.

Password entry screen

The design of the keyboard when entering passwords has changed slightly. The buttons became rectangular in shape with rounded corners instead of circles. However, when you unlock the device, the numeric keypad remains the same. Except that the font inside the circles has become thicker.

Keyboard

The standard keyboard has become more convenient for one-handed operation. If you hold the emoji button, the letter keys will move closer to your thumb. This will allow you to type on the go without the risk of dropping your smartphone or having to help yourself with your second hand.

Screenshots

Once you take a screenshot, a thumbnail will appear in the bottom left corner, and a series of screenshots will stack the images. Clicking on the thumbnail will launch an interface with editing tools that will allow you to make notes and add notes, save the result in the Photos application, share pictures and delete unsuccessful photos.

Changes to standard iOS 11 apps

Notes

In Notes, you can now scan documents using your smartphone camera, add handwritten notes using new tools directly onto the text, or insert a sketch as a picture.

Calendar

Siri is even better integrated with Calendar, Apple Maps now includes departure time calculations, and the app can suggest meeting places based on frequent visits to certain establishments.

The iPhone camera has new filters, and there are three effects for editing live photos: video loop, pendulum, and long exposure.

Calculator

The design of the Calculator application has completely changed, starting with the icon and ending with the interface itself.

This will not work in Russia yet, but you can take note: floor plans of many large airports and shopping centers around the world have appeared in Apple Maps. In addition, in the navigation mode, drivers will receive tips on speed limits and choosing the right lane.

Messages

The Messages app has a new interface. All add-ons - emoticons, stickers, etc. - are available in the pop-up application bar at the bottom of the screen. But there will be no Apple Pay transfers to iMessage yet; at the moment, this function is announced only for the USA.

Telephone

The fonts have become larger, the button to save the dialed number is now more visible, and deleting characters is located at the bottom of the screen, closer to the keyboard.

The new Files application will collect all documents. It’s convenient to work with them: there are tags, labels, favorites, a section of recent documents, and in addition, access to files on other devices and in third-party cloud services.

In Wallet, the changes are purely aesthetic - cards now have a white background instead of a blur.

The watch companion app has two new watch faces: Siri and Kaleidoscope. They will become available after updating the Apple Watch to watchOS 4.0 beta. The difference in setting up new dials on a watch and a smartphone is that in the first case, only a few preset photos are available for the kaleidoscope, while in the second, you can use your own photos from the library.
Bluetooth (AirPods)

Owners of AirPods headphones have new options for controlling the accessory. If previously you could choose one of two actions when you touched the earphone - launch Siri or play/pause - now transitions to the previous and next track have been added. And most importantly, you can assign different commands to the right and left AirPods.

Command centre

In the Control Center settings, you can now add the applications you need for quick access, change their order and remove unnecessary shortcuts.

Basic - iPhone Storage

Now this section not only reports the amount of free and used memory on the device, but also gives recommendations on how to free it up. Users are advised to turn on iCloud Photo Library, clear out the album containing recently deleted photos, and enable message syncing via iCloud. In the list of applications there is an opportunity not only to delete a “heavy” game or program, but also to “download” it (the name of the function is clearly not final). In the second case, the application will be deleted from the device, but all data will be retained. If you install it later, the information will not be lost.

iTunes Store and App Store

There is a new option “Download unused software” (again, the name is clearly not final), which allows you to automatically remove applications and games that you have not used for a long time. In this case, all data will remain on the device so that after reinstalling the application it will return to normal operation.

A new separate option for emergency calls has appeared in Settings. There you can add numbers for emergency communication with one or more loved ones.

Accounts and Passwords

In this section, you can view all saved usernames and passwords for sites and applications, as well as add and delete service accounts.

Messages

There is a new option that allows you to enable message synchronization via iCloud. If necessary, you can also activate forced synchronization there.

You can now take Live Photos during video calls, although the option is enabled by default. If you don’t like it, you’ll have to deactivate it in Settings.

In iOS 11 Camera, the QR code scanner is now active by default. Once you point it at the corresponding image, a banner with encoded information will appear at the top of the screen. However, this option can be disabled in Settings. And if you go to select the video format in the “Camera” settings, you will notice a significant reduction in the size of a minute of shooting - thanks to the use of the new codec, the videos will take up to two times less space on the device without compromising on quality.
App Store

The App Store in iOS 11 has been radically changed, and the mechanics of its operation have been completely rethought. For some applications, tips will appear, others will receive something like reviews from App Store employees, gameplay will be seen in games, users will be offered even more interesting selections, improved recommendations, and much more. It will take a long time to get used to, but the new App Store looks very interesting and promising.

One of the main changes to Apple Music is the ability to view popular tracks and friends' playlists. If you don’t want to share such details yourself, you can hide your musical preferences in your account settings and force other users to send you access requests.

Family accounts now have the ability to use one iCloud plan for everyone. Storage space for photos, videos, documents and files can be shared among members of a family group, rather than each individual paying for additional cloud storage.

2017 brought us not only a completely new iPhone X, but also another update to the operating system, which is called iOS 11.

If we forget about the various jambs when the system was released, then a number of new functions also appeared in it. For the sake of which many are ready to update their iPhones, including owners of the iPhone 5. I’m not sure that there are many iPhone 5 owners now, but there are some and they are wondering if they can install iOS 11.

I will now try to answer this question.

Is it possible to update iPhone 5 to iOS 11?

To begin with, I’ll say a few words about the iPhone 5. Let me remind you that this smartphone appeared back in 2012, and of course the gadget is very outdated by modern standards. Now you can’t even find it on sale.

Nevertheless, at that time it looked very stylish, and if you forget about minor shortcomings (well, when they were not there), many wanted to buy it. Of course, this is not surprising; this situation repeats itself every September. When Tim Cook takes the stage and introduces us to the brand new iPhones.

When users bought this device, they received iOS 6 on board. As you all know, support for each iPhone is not endless and in this case it ended with the release of iOS 10.3.

Overall, it works well and Apple stopped support at the most opportune moment. After all, the smartphone’s hardware would hardly have been able to cope with iOS 11. Let me remind you that it had a dual-core Apple A6 with a frequency of 1.3 GHz, as well as 1 GB of LPDDR2, which now looks weak.

If anything, this information can always be found on the official Apple website, on the about page, where you scroll to the very bottom and you will see a list of supported devices.

iOS 11, Apple's latest mobile operating system, is a major update for iPhone and iPad. The official release date for iOS 11 is September 19, 2017. The official announcement of iOS 11 took place at the WWDC 2017 developer conference.

Major system updates mainly focused on the iPad: the dock was modified, and useful functions such as Drag&Drop appeared. In addition, there was a significant update to the Control Center, which became more convenient and minimalistic.

Siri also received improvements in iOS 11. Apple continues to work not only on training its voice assistant, but also on its attractiveness. iOS 11 will support all devices that were able to install iOS 10, except iPhone 5/5c and iPad 4.

iOS 11 release date

The final version of iOS 11 will be available simultaneously worldwide on September 19. In Ukraine, iOS will be released around 20:00, but some users will have the opportunity to download the operating system later, within a few hours. Before September 20, you are most likely to receive a message that the update is ready for download.

If you receive a message about updating to iOS 11 on time, be prepared to wait - millions of people around the world will try to do the same at the same time as you, so the download may take a long time. The update to iOS 11 weighs about 2 GB, and the servers will likely be overloaded.

iOS 11 design

There was no major update to the design of the operating system. Only a few elements of the iOS 11 interface have changed. In iOS 11, Apple designers switched to using bolder fonts, particularly in headings.

Some applications, such as Phone and Calculator, have received much more noticeable improvements, which can even be called a full-fledged redesign. But the Calendar and Reminders programs remained unchanged.

iOS 11: how the design has changed

iOS 11 Control Center

The updated Control Center in iOS 11 is a single screen, instead of the three separate ones offered in iOS 10. However, there has been no return to the days of iOS 9 - the Control Center has received a completely new look with round-shaped icons. The updated default menu includes two sections for regulating network options, music controls, sliders for changing volume and brightness, as well as several small buttons for locking rotation, and controlling the Do Not Disturb function.

Apple finally took pity on its users and gave them the ability to customize Control Center. Now you can install the necessary functions and applications, which will certainly make using your iPhone and iPad much more convenient.

Now the Control Center takes up the entire screen area. Thanks to this, the updated menu provides access to a noticeably wider range of functions, and users have the right to choose which ones to access.

A special section has appeared in the iOS 11 settings in which users can add various elements to the Control Center. You can add options:
- flashlight
- timer
- calculator
- camera
- Universal access
- alarm
- Apple TV control
- do not disturb while driving
- guide access
- "Home" application
- low power consumption mode
- magnifying glass
- notes
- screen recording
- stopwatch
- text size
- audio notes
- Wallet app

Also, expanded 3D Touch gestures have appeared in the Control Center. With increased pressure on most icons, the user will receive additional options. For example, if you press hard on the Music program icon, not only playback controls will appear on the screen, but also information about the composition.

"Control Center" in iOS 11

The new Control Center looks different on iPad. It appears on the right side of the screen in both landscape and portrait orientation. The left side is occupied by thumbnails of running applications. "Center" itself on the iPad is exactly the same as on the iPhone. Menu items can be changed to suit your own needs, and if you hold for a long time, additional options appear.

iMessage and Apple Pay

In iOS 10, Apple introduced apps for Messages and even a separate App Store for iMessage. With iOS 11, the company decided to give users more convenient access to these features. Messages in iOS 11 introduces quick access to stickers, emoji, apps, and games that can be used by iMessage.

All you have to do to access them is swipe your finger across the program's pop-up panel, and the iMessage add-ons you need will appear in front of you.

In addition, iMessage in iOS 11 now has the ability to send payments between messenger users. Using the special Apple Pay application, iPhone and iPad owners can transfer money to each other using Apple's proprietary payment system. The money you receive is stored on your new Apple Pay Cash card, which doesn't appear in the Wallet app.

Important! Money transfers within the Apple Pay contactless payment service will become unavailable to users immediately after the release of iOS 11. The release of this function will occur later with the release of one of the planned operating system updates, probably iOS 11.1. In addition, the function will first work only in the United States.

Live Photos

Apple is not losing hope of making Live Photos popular among all its users. iOS 11 introduces three new effects for Live Photos.

Ring roller

Pendulum effect (the photo will play forward and backward)

Long exposure

Camera

The iPhone Camera app in iOS 11 has new filters that Apple calls "pro-grade." Thanks to them, skin tone in photographs will become more realistic, and portraits will be as expressive as possible.

Changes to the Camera app in iOS 11

Portrait mode has been significantly improved in iOS 11. In particular, image quality has been increased, low light output has been improved, and the mode itself has received support for optical image stabilization. In addition, the flash started working in portrait mode and HDR support appeared for better lighting.

New HEIF and HEVC formats

In iOS 11, Apple switched to new photo and video formats – HEIF and HEIC, respectively. The main feature of these formats is improved compression. Multimedia is compressed up to two times without losing quality. This means that photos and videos taken with an iPhone or iPad camera will take up half as much space in memory and iCloud cloud storage.

New photo and video formats in iOS 11

App Store

The App Store has been completely redesigned. Despite the redesign, the main changes to the App Store in iOS 11 are contained within. After the update, the App Store greets users with five tabs:
- Today,
- games,
- applications,
- update,
- search.

The Today tab contains today's most relevant content, as determined by App Store editors. Also on this tab, various applications with detailed descriptions, collections and even articles regularly appear in which developers often describe the process of creating their applications and games.

The main technical upgrade to the Apple app store was improved search. Searching in the App Store has become much easier - the “smart” mechanism suggests very accurately, and also provides links to relevant articles, tips and tricks, and selections upon request.

Siri in iOS 11

Apple's proprietary voice assistant, Siri, has been updated with more realistic female and male voices that are much more similar to human ones. According to Apple executives, the new Siri voices were created using deep learning, which allowed for better pronunciation and a more expressive voice.

Siri's biggest innovation in iOS 11 is subtle. The voice assistant can learn on its own, and it learns directly on the device, without sending user data anywhere. Thanks to machine learning, Siri will be able to learn more about the user's interests, which will enable it to make better recommendations.

What's New in Siri in iOS 11

In iOS 11, users can ask Siri to translate text from English to Chinese, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Support for other languages will be implemented in the coming months.

In addition, Siri has learned to form an understanding of users’ musical tastes. Based on this information, the voice assistant can suggest relevant music from Apple Music.

Siri in iOS 11 gained support for the Notes application (creating notes, task lists and reminders), remote banking program for bank transfers and accounts, as well as applications that reflect QR codes.

iCloud Drive

In iOS 11, the iCloud Drive app has disappeared, replaced by a completely new Files app, which is the equivalent of the Finder on the Mac. Files offers access to all files stored locally on your iPhone or iPad, data from iCloud cloud storage, content from apps, and all files and folders from third-party cloud services such as Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, Google Drive and others .

AR Kit

Augmented reality is another new product from Apple. Using the iPhone camera, you can add non-existent objects to the screen, thus blurring the line between virtual and real. The company invites developers to try all this today, using a special API AR Kit - the world's largest augmented reality tool.
