Apple Watch series 2 review

Hi all! How good it was before... there is one iPhone model - you choose a color and buy it. There is one Apple Watch model - I chose the size, color, strap... bought it. Now the range of gadgets from the company from Cupertino has grown greatly, and at the same time, if we talk about watches, they are not so different. It is absolutely unclear what to choose.

In this article we will not analyze case materials, colors, straps, individual models that differ only in appearance and pre-installed software (such as the Apple Watch Nike+), since the company is constantly adding/removing various options (a lot has changed) and keep track of everything this is simply impossible.

Therefore, let's focus exclusively on the main differences between Apple Watch of different generations.

Well, anyone who wants to look at the current models and choose a strap can do this on the official website.

All. The introduction has been delayed - it's time to start. Let's go!

What's the difference between Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2?

I decided to summarize all the main characteristics in one table, here they are:

For those who are too lazy to study, I will highlight the most important points of difference between Series 2 and Series 1:

  1. Screen brightness. In the 2nd generation Apple Watch, the screen became twice as bright - 1000 nits versus 450 in Series 1. The display resolution did not change.
  2. Water protection. Series 2 can be submerged in water up to 50 meters deep and nothing will happen to it. The very first model could only withstand splashes.
  3. Dual core processor. Everything should work even faster!
  4. GPS. Apple has equipped the second Watch with a GPS module - now you can track the distance traveled directly on the watch.
  5. Slight increase in battery capacity. Most likely, this is due to the advent of GPS. It consumes some additional energy, and in order for the second generation of watches to work no less than the previous one, the battery had to be slightly larger.

As you can see, on the one hand, the changes are not very significant. On the other hand... in my opinion, water protection and GPS are very useful things that perfectly complement the image of a sports watch.

What is the difference between Apple Watch Series 2 and Series 3?

Most recently, Apple presented the 3rd generation watch - let's take a look at what the company has been working on for the whole year and what has changed since the Watch Series 2?

This time we will do without a comparison table, because Apple in the 3rd generation of its watches also added a model with a built-in SIM card, which means we have to compare as many as 6 “different” devices! Considering the fact that the dimensions have remained virtually unchanged (a couple of millimeters does not count), we will focus exclusively on the most important differences between Series 3 and Series 2.

So, what's new in Watch 2017?

Nothing else has changed - these are the same good Apple Watch Series 2. With water protection, GPS, a promised operating time of 18 hours (with mixed use), etc.

So which Watch should you choose - first, second or third generation?

Actually, after all these comparisons, this is the most important question. Considering the fact that Apple releases new models approximately once a year, now we will find out what watch to buy in 2017-2018?

It would seem that now we should have a choice of Series 1, 2 and 3. But the company makes money, so after the release of the 3rd generation, it left only Apple Watch 1 and 3 on sale. The second model was discontinued. This means that we will choose between the first and third versions:

  1. The Series 1 is worth buying if you want the watch as a companion to your iPhone and nothing else. Receive notifications, watch the time, control music - the first generation of Watch does an excellent job with all these and many other functions.
  2. Series 3 is more “about sports”. GPS, full moisture protection, barometric altimeter are useful assistants during training.

And finally, let me remind you of the most important difference - the price.

The difference between Series 3 and Series 1 is on average 6,000-8,000 rubles. Agree, the amount is not small and it’s worth thinking about... Are the additional features of version 3 worth that kind of money? Are they necessary? Or is this complete and absolutely useless nonsense? It's up to you to decide!

P.S. It seems to me that the comparison turned out to be quite complete. However, if you have questions or comments, welcome to the comments!

P.S.S. Is everything clear and there are no questions? Support the author with a “like”! It’s not hard for you, but I’m very pleased :) Thank you very much in advance!

When Apple launched the iWatch smart watch on the market in 2015, consumers had already tried several dozen smart watch models from manufacturers of various sizes. Nevertheless, the gadget was a natural success among lovers of wearable devices. In the fall of 2016, the second generation of these watches appeared. Their differences from their predecessor in design are insignificant. The main improvements to Apple Watch 2 are located inside the device's body.

Complete set of watches and their modifications

The Apple Watch Series 2 comes in an oblong box made of thick cardboard with a molded niche for the watch inside. Included with the device:

  • documentation;
  • round wireless magnetic charging with USB cable;
  • adapter.

Instead of the supplied adapter, you can use any charger from your smartphone.

Owners of the first generation watches received 2 straps of different sizes. The new product only has 2 options when choosing a sports silicone strap. When purchasing a watch with a woven nylon strap, it comes in a single size. You can also choose a leather strap or a stainless steel bracelet.

The smart watch remains compatible with the straps of the previous model. At the same time, the range of straps is expanding. New colors are available, such as asphalt gray for nylon and taupe for silicone straps.

Apple watch series 2 versions:

  1. Standard version. It does not differ in any additions in functionality or design.
  2. A special version for runners, the result of a partnership with Nike. This modification, called Nike +, is equipped with a silicone strap with large holes designed to provide comfort during active sports. Another feature of the watch straps in this series is the two-tone surface in Nike’s signature colors.
  3. Hermes is a product created in collaboration with the Hermes fashion house. It features special metal or leather straps and dials. Detachable Hermes straps can be purchased separately.
  4. Edition - premium version of smartwatches. The case is made of white polished ceramic, which is 4 times stronger than stainless steel.
  5. Sport modification. It is a simplified version of the first generation of watches.

Case and display

The overall dimensions of the new product repeat the dimensions of the previous model. The only difference is in the thickness of the case. It has increased by 0.9 mm, which is not too noticeable. Similar to the Apple Watch 1, the second generation watch case is available in 2 sizes - with a diagonal of 38 mm and 42 mm - and has a rectangular shape with rounded corners.

On the right side of the case there is a Digital Crown wheel and an oblong button. A second microphone hole was added on the opposite side. The speaker slot remains in the same place. On the back of the case there are sensors surrounded by a ring made of zirconium-based ceramics.

The case material is stainless steel in silver and dark gray colors and lighter aluminum in silver and golden shades and in “rose gold” and “space gray” options.

The smartwatch screen is curved towards the edges and is made of mirror-smooth scratch-resistant glass. Has excellent anti-reflective properties. A grease-repellent coating is applied to the outer surface of the display. Thanks to it, fingerprints are less obvious and can be easily removed.

The brightness of the AMOLED display is adjusted automatically using a light sensor. This, together with excellent anti-glare properties, allows you to use the gadget both in the dark and in bright sunshine at different viewing angles.

New features not found in Series 1

The new generation of smart watches received a dual-core SIP Apple S2 chip. This processor is 50% more powerful than its predecessor, which means that more heavyweight applications are now available on the device. The amount of RAM is now a full gigabyte. The gadget runs on the new watchOS3 operating system, which has increased the responsiveness of applications and the speed of response of the Siri assistant.

An important innovation is the appearance of a GPS module with instant connection to satellites. With its advent, the Apple Watch becomes a true sports watch that does not require carrying a smartphone while jogging or cycling. In this regard, smart watches have gained greater independence from the iPhone.

The new software provides expanded opportunities for sports activities. The gadget has the Workout, Breathing, and Activity applications. The Workout application includes various programs for exercising outdoors and in the gym. The Apple Watch Nike+ modification has a special Nike application, with which the device will become a personal trainer for the owner.

In addition, the smart watch has become waterproof. You can swim in them and dive to a depth of 50 m. (The mentioned Workout app offers programs for swimming in the pool and in open water). However, deep-sea diving and sports that involve moving through water at high speed should be avoided.

Basic functions and controls

Basic features of a smart watch:

  • making calls (only with a smartphone);
  • the ability to read email and instant messenger messages;
  • listening to music;
  • saving reminders, appointment list;
  • Internet connection;
  • communication via Bluetooth protocol with an iPhone, creating a pair with it;
  • communication with the Siri assistant via voice commands (with Siri responding with text);
  • tracking and saving sports training results;
  • building and maintaining a track while walking, jogging and cycling; distance calculation;
  • built-in pedometer and stopwatch;
  • heart rate measurement function;
  • control of daily activity;
  • calorie loss calculation;
  • breathing care function for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

To control the gadget, you use the Digital Crown scroll wheel, which works the same way as a key and an oblong button next to it. The digital crown is used to scroll, bring up the application menu and exit to the home screen.

To activate the screen, just wave your hand.

The long side button is used to turn on the device and call up the new Dock menu, from which it is convenient to access applications.

The display responds to the degree of pressure using Force Touch technology. Pressing harder on the center of the screen while applications are running will bring up additional menus or options.

Other interactions with the interface occur via the touch display. By swiping the screen right or left, you can quickly switch between watch faces.

To use the Apple Watch Series 2, you need an iPhone with iOS 10 and the Watch application, which contains all the watch settings and allows you to select and organize applications and widgets in the Dock menu.

Waterproof

Water resistance is an important innovation. The watch can be safely submerged to a maximum of 50 m underwater. True, with reservations: the device is not suitable for diving and water skiing, when water can enter the body with high pressure and speed.

Increased moisture resistance was achieved using new adhesives and seals. When you activate the Open Water Swimming or Pool Swimming training modes, the display turns off and remains in this mode until you exit the water, and the application continues to work.

In order to dry the speaker after swimming, an unusual system has been implemented to push water out of its body using pulsations. The water elimination mechanism is activated by turning the Digital Crown.

Autonomy

The new smartwatch is equipped with a larger capacity battery. Apple indicates the battery life of the device is 18 hours. This value is approximate and depends on the intensity of use. For models with a 38 mm and 42 mm screen, it is not the same.

Using GPS increases battery drain, as does being under bright sun (this causes the screen brightness to rise).

But if you consider that the Apple Watch 2 has a GPS module, a much faster processor and a twice as bright display, then the battery life at the level of the previous model is a good indicator.

conclusions

The second series of Apple Watch has an emphasis on fitness, but this does not mean that the watch is only suitable for athletes. Thanks to their extensive functionality, they allow the owner to monitor their health and evaluate their sports activity. They work efficiently in tandem with or without an iPhone.

Compared to its predecessor, the gadget has received many improvements and thanks to them it is one of the best smartwatches on the market. Apple Watch Series 2 is not the most necessary, but a fashionable and stylish accessory from a renowned manufacturer, made at the highest level.

Apple Watch Series 2 is the second generation watch from the Cupertino giant. But more importantly, this is the company's second chance to prove to the public that it can produce watches that are as recognized and approved around the world as the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

In the second generation of watches, Apple placed more emphasis on the sports orientation of the watch, adding the ability to track the route while jogging and cycling using GPS without an iPhone. Now the device is completely waterproof and through it you can monitor indicators during water procedures in the pool and the open sea. Additionally, Apple has added a new Breathing app to help the user relax. The company's intentions are quite transparent: it wants to win sports watch owners over to its side.

But Apple does not forget about those who are far from playing sports. The company built on software bugs in the previous generation of watches and sorted them out in watch OS 3, improving elements of interaction during everyday use, and also worked on compatibility with third-party applications and much more.

As with the first series, we had high hopes for the second generation watches. And so far, high sales are justifying them. We've been using the watch for a couple of weeks and have formed our first opinion about the watch. And now that we've had it for a longer period of time, we can do a full review of the Apple Watch Series 2.

Appearance of Apple Watch Series 2

What changes does the Apple Watch Series 2 have? Well, visually nothing. Apple Watch continues to be the most controversial device. In general, these are the same wristwatches in a boring square shape and devoid of any style. However, there are those who consider them elegant, bright and even stylish. Be that as it may, for the money spent, the buyer gets a device with a pleasant appearance, which is similar in price to a premium watch, especially when coupled with a metal case and a leather or steel strap. In general, now this is a sports watch, but you can’t tell it by looking at it.

Many believe that the main task of these watches is to emphasize the status of its owner. The Apple Watch Series 2 is one of the few smartwatches suitable for this role.

Differences from the first series

There are some minor differences between the two generations, which can be seen when you place watches from the first and second series next to each other. The second generation watch is slightly thicker than the original, which is barely noticeable on the 42mm model, and even more noticeable on the 38mm model.

Undoubtedly, the biggest difference between the new watch and its old version is its water resistance. Apple protected the Watch Series 2 with a metal shell, thanks to which the device will withstand pressure of 5 atmospheres and will continue to work at a depth of about 50 meters. What's most impressive is that this level of water resistance is possible without changing the design. And this is not an easy matter. Suffice it to recall how Jawbone screwed up big time with the UP 3 fitness bracelet, which turned out to be resistant to splashes, but not to water.

Also, speaking of changes, it is worth mentioning the screen, which is now twice as bright (up to 1000 cd/m2) than that of the model from the first series. The difference is obvious, however, not everyone will notice it, since the default brightness is set to 66%, most likely to increase battery life. But as soon as you increase the brightness in the settings, the screen will sparkle with bright colors.

Otherwise, everything is as usual: the watch is very light and fits comfortably on the hand. Light weight is an important detail, thanks to which the wrist will not hurt, as is the case with heavier models of competitors. In fact, this watch is one of the best options for women who do not want to wear a watch that is too heavy.

The winding and button are located in the same place, (although the button changed its function in watchOS 3) the strap mounts also remain the same, which will please those who shell out for straps from third-party manufacturers. It’s also good that the straps are easy to attach and detach from the watch.

Straps and case

As before, the watch is available in aluminum and metal cases, and, of course, let’s not forget about the version with a ceramic case. There are also new straps made of nylon fabric - in general, the choice of accessories this time is wider, but the appearance of the watch remains true to its canon.

Apple Watch Series 2 functionality

Series 2 has the same set of features that users are accustomed to from their experience with watches from the first series. You can, as before, use the device as a regular watch, change dials (there are new ones specifically aimed at sports exercises) through the menu of the watch itself or using an application on the iPhone. It is possible to add small widgets to the watch face, through which you can quickly access your favorite applications while on the home screen. Of course, this is a good innovation. The dial is not always displayed on the screen; you just need to quickly raise your hand with the watch, and everything the user needs will appear on the screen.

The main screen with bubbled app icons also remains, and is unlocked by pressing the crown of the watch's electronic winder, which is a bit awkward to use, especially when launching and scrolling through apps.

More convenient work with notifications

Notifications from branded and third-party (Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, etc.) applications, as before, are an integral part of the watch’s functionality. This is a very useful thing - you don’t need to reach into your pocket for your phone.

Being a key feature, they didn't work very smoothly on the original version, fortunately notifications work as they should on Series 2. Notifications appear in such a way that the user can easily read them, dismiss them, or do as he sees fit. Although it still becomes a little troublesome when a bunch of notifications pour in from one application. But in general, the new watches cope with such tasks much better compared to the old ones.

From notifications we will gradually move on to voice requests - it is through them that you can answer incoming messages and calls, check your social media feed without taking out your phone. You can even make calls using Siri, but Apple has put those who don't want to talk into their watch during a call in an awkward position. Notifications are provided either through beeps or light vibrations from the haptic response mechanism. With such a system you will not miss an incoming call or message.

In addition, in the built-in Messages application, you can dictate the text of a response message or select from a list of ready-made templates (Thank you, I’ll call you back later, and so on). You can now insert emoji into correspondence, and the new “Scribble” function allows you to draw one letter at a time by sliding your finger across the screen. The letters will eventually form a single message. The letter recognition accuracy is surprisingly high. Sometimes you have to draw quickly to make recognition more accurate, but this is a great innovation that can also be used in Google Hangout. And, of course, do not forget about the Digital Touch function, with which you can send drawings.

OS WatchOS 3

The watch runs on watchOS 3. Apple regularly releases updates for this system, thus keeping its promise made during the launch of the first Apple Watch.

The latest version of the OS adds many features and improvements. Some of them are needed to use the watch more efficiently, while others, like the Breathing app (a little more sophisticated than necessary, but the heart rate monitor comes in handy here) or the Emergency Call app, try to expand the capabilities of Apple's smartwatches.

As before, you can upload your own music to the watch; probably, it wasn’t even worth mentioning - it’s too small a detail compared to other features. For music, the user has 2 GB of free memory, but first you will need to create your playlist on iTunes via your phone.

Thanks to the improved processor, the Series 2's performance has been increased. The recent applications panel opens by pressing the button located below the electronic watch winder. This is a very useful innovation.

Overall, the feeling of using the new watch is much better and you quickly get used to it. Although you still have to take out your iPhone, since not all functions work through the watch.

The smartwatch system has not yet been fully polished; updates are released from time to time that add certain functions. For example, the watchOS 3.2 update is expected to have a movie theater mode that will mute the watch and disable the wrist-wake feature. There will also be a SiriKit service, which will allow developers to embed the Siri virtual assistant into their watch applications. This service can make a big difference.

Applications and productivity

Apple Watch has a ton of pre-installed apps. Of course, there would be an app store as well.

The built-in applications are the same:

  • "Training",
  • "Activity",
  • "Mail",
  • "Messages"
  • "Timer",
  • "Photos",
  • "Stock",
  • "Weather",
  • "Music",
  • "Watch",
  • "Remote devices"
  • "Cards",
  • "Calendar".

In general, a complete set. Many of the apps on the iPhone are available on the Apple Watch. During installation, the system will recognize and download them to the watch.

The original Apple Watch had a very large and varied set of apps, but not all of them worked as intended. Due to performance issues, some simply cannot be launched. Well, a lot of work has been done on the performance of the second generation watches. And thanks to the more powerful dual-core processor, apps launch in about two seconds, compared to five seconds on the previous watch. Moreover, they could also crash or freeze.

The practicality of the Apple Watch Series 2 smartwatch comes into its own when you use the app drawer in watchOS 3. It contains the user's six most frequently used apps, which appear immediately at the touch of a button.

Third Party Applications

If we talk about the quality and variety of applications on the Apple Watch, not everything is so simple. There are no truly failed apps in the app store. Basically, these are good apps with a little functionality that some may like, while others may find them useless.

Some third-party exercise apps have yet to receive support for the GPS sensor on the Apple Watch Series 2. According to information portal Strava, an update for the apps will be released "in early 2017." Although, for example, the Runkeeper application has already taken a step in this direction.

Track your workout progress

The Activity app remains the same as before: three indicators in the form of three intuitive rings, one of which is responsible for “Mobility” (calorie consumption), “Exercise” (activity time) and the “On the move” indicator (daily amount time spent walking).

We liked three indicators that will help you lead a healthy lifestyle. In addition, the rings clearly show the activity of the owner of the watch in relation to the daily standard, without loading it with numbers and figures. Indicator standards can be changed manually: either increased or decreased every week. If the user constantly exceeds or underfulfills the daily standard, Apple Watch will adjust the indicators accordingly. Now sharing your metrics with other smartwatch owners is much easier. This way, you can monitor the performance of your friends and motivate yourself more.

But what about accuracy? To answer this question, we compared the Apple Watch Series 2's metrics and found that they were pretty close, specifically in terms of calories and distance traveled. We must think that this news will please both owners of smartwatches from Apple and Fitbit.

But an application for tracking sleep indicators has not appeared. We haven't heard about this application among future updates for the OS. Most likely, the company decided that the watch needs to be charged at some point. And the best time for this, naturally, is night. You won't wear them around the clock, will you? But there is an option. The beauty of the app store is that third-party application developers can make applications that the manufacturing company itself has not released, i.e. Apple, but for which there is demand.

Track your performance while running - thanks to built-in GPS

To be fair, it’s worth noting that Apple’s first-generation smartwatches didn’t perform well when running. There have been compatibility issues with third-party sports apps, so we had high expectations after Apple announced it was refocusing the watch on sports.

Apple has added GPS to the watch, so you can track your distance and route without having to take your iPhone with you while jogging, biking, or just walking. Load music into your watch from iTunes or Apple Music, grab your wireless headphones and off you go. But remember that there is no GPS support on third-party applications.

Performance tracking, as before, is carried out through the “Training” application, and if you set the design of the watch face with the same name, the application for tracking performance while running will launch even faster. Apple promised fast synchronization with GPS. We were skeptical about this promise, but it turns out that the company kept it. The user receives all the necessary information, namely: distance, time, heart rate and average speed, just by looking at the screen.

The accuracy of indicators has increased

We were very interested in GPS accuracy, so we compared the Apple Watch Series 2 with the TomTom Spark 3, and our watches did not let us down, as a result, the Apple Watch showed very similar results for GPS tracking while running.

On several runs, the difference in the measured distance between the two watches was on average 0.30 km. The average movement speed differed by 9-10 seconds, and the average heart rate monitor readings for both devices differed only by 3-4 beats per minute. You can now track your route and track changes in your average walking speed, but more detailed heart rate information is not available.

During the trial, results were mixed. The watch monitors your movement while running with an accelerometer. Compared to Spark 3, the difference in distance indicators was 300-400 m, the average speed of movement was also very different. But the average heart rate readings were mostly accurate. In any case, the Spark 3 is better suited for tracking indoor running performance, so we won't judge our watch too harshly.

You shouldn't expect anything mega cool from this watch while running, just like from Garmin or Polar. First of all, the watch does not track altitude, which many have expressed their disappointment about on the Internet. But the watch turned out to be quite suitable for tracking performance during runs, especially when compared with the original Apple Watch.

Heart rate monitoring

The first series of Apple Watch barely deserved praise for the accuracy of the heart rate monitor, although, of course, it wasn't all that bad. We have repeatedly tested the second series of smartwatches from Apple Watch Series 2, the results were simply excellent.

Calibrating the sensor takes some time, about a minute after you start running. During a calm walk, the watch remained fairly close to the chest sensors, producing a reading that deviated from the true value by more than 5 beats per minute. And during running the difference was even less.

We also compared the watch's performance during sprinting with chest strap sensors. Our watch was definitely behind on the heart rate readings, but was able to catch up with the heart rate readings about 10 seconds into the run. Of course, the results are not perfect, but if you are doing an intense exercise program, we would venture to say that the data from the indicators will be useful at the end of the workout.

Apple Watch Series 2 fails when trying to meet the heart rate target during short periods of time. If the user's running activity takes less than a minute, he has no chance, but for longer periods of time there should be no problem.

Track your readings while swimming

Users wanted a waterproof Apple Watch, and they got it. And even more than necessary. The Series 2's water resistance level is up to 50 meters (5 atmospheres), which is comparable to the Fitbit Flex 2 watch. That is, you can take it with you into the shower or bath without fear of any consequences (we checked).

Apple has gone further and mixed the two available workouts, Pool Swim and Open Sea Swim, so you now have multiple options at your disposal, such as swim distance, stroke average, pool length, and swim style. The numbers turned out to be more than we expected, and they work exceptionally well.

Using the water treatment app is very simple. All you need to do is select in-pool tracking in the Workout app and select the length of the pool. The watch will notify the user that the screen is preparing to lock.

Given the high accuracy of the indicators, the price is now perceived as adequate. We compared our watch's performance to that of the TomTom Spark 3, which also had swimming tracking capabilities. The results were brilliant: a match in swim distance, pool length and average number of strokes. All received data remains in the “Activity” application and, based on it, a daily standard is set, which is displayed on the activity rings.

Unfortunately, data cannot be uploaded to third-party applications, which is disappointing. Overall, we enjoyed sailing with this watch, we just wish it was possible to export the data to other applications.

Battery life

Battery life on the first Apple Watch was underwhelming. The watch could work for about a day, and that was the maximum.

But in Apple Watch Series 2 the figures are slightly increased. Now the watch lasts about two days. This time was shown by the 38 mm model. The 42 mm model has a larger battery capacity, but in any case, it seems to us that two days will not be enough.

If you want to track your performance while running, swimming and regularly use applications and notifications, you will have to switch to power reserve mode on the second day. This greatly limits the user's ability to use the device to its full potential. The charger is the same as that of the first generation watch, and a fully charged battery is fully charged quite quickly. But you need to place the watch correctly on the charger, as it easily moves off it.

Apple Watch Series 2 is a striking example of the rapid development of information technology in our time. This has led to the fact that almost every day a wide variety of devices are being developed and produced, which not only update our everyday life, but also increase the presentability of the people who own them.

Different types of Apple Watch 2 Information about

The Apple Watch of the second series is essentially a fitness tracker in the classical sense. Of course, Apple has spent the last year and a half trying to convince users that its wearable device isn't actually a fitness tracker, refusing to classify it as such when determining its ratings, opting for the "smartwatch" category instead. It's definitely still a smartwatch. Nobody denies this. But this is a fitness-oriented watch, and that's a good thing.

Apple has found that the first Apple Watch, which came out in April 2015, is used primarily by users to track their activity levels and fitness goals. Over the years, Apple has observed the success of fitness trackers from Fitbit, Jawbone and Garmin, as well as Polar, which has given it a holistic view of what the end user wants in terms of data tracking.

For comparison, take a look at the Fitbit smartwatch:

Apple has learned that people are willing to pay for a technology that promises to get away from technology even for half an hour, giving them long-awaited independence from wires and phones.

Apple Watch Series 2 review: all about fitness (video):

The first Apple Watch was a traditional first-generation Apple device: sleek in design, but missing key components; yet it has a more intuitive interface than most competitors, even if apps load slowly. But since Apple is influential enough, it can be confident in the future, even if it misses some feature. Apple can afford to repeat itself. And it was repeated more than once.

Although it is worth recognizing that the current Apple Watch is worth the money you pay for it. The addition of GPS and improved water resistance make this smartwatch more like a fitness tracker than ever.

Smart new software ensures that this watch is not a crutch for your smartphone, or rather the opposite, as it is more of a useful accessory. Are they as necessary as a smartphone? No, of course not. It is rather an integral part of the Apple ecosystem.

Old as new

Apple Watch Series 2 comes in three versions: a more budget-friendly aluminum model; then comes the stainless steel model and finally the ceramic model. There is even a branded sports version, which will appear at the end of October. All these watches have the same filling, but different design.

Apple even went ahead and upgraded the original Apple Watch with a faster processor. With the release of WatchOS 3, first-generation watches will receive most of the functions of second-generation devices. However, Apple watches are more expensive than running watches, some watches based on Apple, or even trackers from the Apple line.

But given how far ahead Apple has come in the smartwatch market, it's clear that at least some iPhone owners will definitely pay for the platform's activity and app tracking capabilities that the Apple Watch offers.

The new watch looks almost the same as the old watch. Everything here is like with the iPhone 7: no one will pay attention to the fact that you are the owner of the latest model simply because there are no significant changes in the design. Only you will experience all the benefits of the newest version of your (at first glance) old gadget.

Fitbit, Apple's main competitor in the world of fitness tracking, takes a different approach. Fitbit has released four new devices in the wearables category, all of which are different in terms of design. And if we talk about the filling, then it is the same for everyone. Apple kept the old design, but added new technologies.

There are also slight differences in the appearance of the watches. The OLED display on the new Watch is brighter—in fact, Apple claims it's the brightest display the company has ever made. And if you look closely, you may notice that the new watch is slightly thicker (0.9mm thick to be exact).

But again, only you can know about this, since outwardly the watch does not reveal itself in any way. In addition, if they were thicker, then the battery would have to have a corresponding one. And it's standard for them.

physical characteristics

The new Apple Watch allows you to scuba dive with fins or swim in the pool. The previous model, of course, was waterproof, but now you can safely go down to a depth of 50 meters. The activity tracking app tracks and records the number of laps in a pool or open water, as well as distance and swimming style.

When operating in swimming mode, the watch automatically locks the touch display. Apple says the display will only respond to pressure from your fingers, and not to splashes or water pressure.

For comparison, look at the Apple Watch models:

Before you press the End button in the app, spin the Basel on your watch. After which the watch will produce a sound that is more like the squeak of a mosquito somewhere within the radius of your ear, and then the device will get rid of excess water through vibration. It's a weird and kind of brilliant way to push water out of the ports of an electronic device.

Water resistance is something that will appeal to most users, not just swimmers. Remember, you also like to take a shower or jump from the pool tower without taking off your watch. Notably, the watch also has a water lock function separate from the swim function. This feature is activated by swiping up from the bottom of the home screen.

Water resistance is certainly a useful feature, but adding a GPS sensor is much more useful. The first generation of Apple Watch was often chosen as a fitness device. But a watch without a GPS module for 25 thousand rubles is the same as an expensive car without a turbodiesel. Do you need them? No. Are they worth your attention? Definitely yes.

Now you can go outside without your iPhone and just launch an app and let the GPS in your second-generation Apple Watch do the rest. It will determine the distance and display a map of your workout, which will appear in the app on your iPhone.

GPS IS WHAT REALLY MAKES THE APPLE WATCH A SPORTS WATCH

It is noteworthy that the battery charge of your watch will last for five hours of continuous operation with GPS turned on. Additionally, the watch does not indicate that it is using GPS while the watch is in outdoor training mode. You just have to guess that it works. That's because Apple doesn't want to overload the device with unnecessary system messages like "Searching for GPS" that pop up on the screen of most sports watches.

The company says the device will start searching for a signal as soon as you open the workout app on your watch, even if you don't indicate you're going to exercise outside - and will use data collected by other sensors to fill in the missing data fields until it is in GPS mode.

Also useful information:

Maybe you don’t need to know everything that happens to you with such precision. But accuracy is the main advantage of this watch. You can test the watch while cycling, jogging or walking, and you will not find any complaints about accuracy. In this case, you do not have to carry your iPhone with you, since the watch will pair with the iPhone via a GPS signal.

There are practically no discrepancies in the recorded data. Everything is clear and precise, and most importantly, exactly like in a pharmacy. Of course, there were small errors, but we attribute this to the human factor, which always occurs during such tests.

It is worth noting the similarity of activity tracking to the original Apple Watch. Optical heart rate monitors are almost identical. And your daily activity levels are still displayed as a series of colorful rings, both on the watch and in the iPhone-compatible app.

For some, this visual representation serves as good motivation. For some, filling out the Apple Watch ring sometimes even becomes an obsession. Some people still prefer to display data in the form of multi-colored charts. This makes them easier to navigate.

ACTIVITY TRACKING FUNCTIONS ARE PRACTICALLY NO DIFFERENT FROM THE OLD VERSION

Most of the new Apple Watch features are purely visual. For example, if you decide to rename your workouts to something like badminton, cricket, yoga, or crossfit, the watch won't track those activities. This is a unique way of saving data about your workouts in the system. They appear in the activity list and count toward your overall workout.

When trying to get rid of excess water by turning the basel, you will not see any physical drops or water. An image of disintegrating drops will appear on the screen, which indicates that the device is freeing from excess drops.

Likewise, you won't see any messages containing the word GPS, you just need to know that it is supported and working. This approach to the activity tracking process based on clear graphical data is Apple's specialty: the device often ignores what is happening behind the scenes, so to speak.

The watch comes preloaded with a new app that reminds you to take a deep breath when you need to concentrate. The extent to which the use of such an application is advisable is not yet clear. For now, it’s more like a reminder from your loved one who wakes you up every morning with the words: “It’s time to get up!” Reminders from such apps are, however, easy to ignore.

Previously, Apple avoided social networks. This demonstrates the importance of a socially oriented component for wearable electronics, which, for example, giants such as Fitbit are paying attention to. You can now receive notifications about when and how your friends have completed their workouts, and optionally leave them encouraging messages. However, in order to send a message to the social network, you will have to use the iMessage service, which is quite in the spirit of Apple.

Still a smartwatch

So what about the fitness component? What about daily activities? Is Apple Watch faster and more productive? The questions are valid. The first generation of Apple Watch suffered from slow app loading times and an interface that involved tapping and scrolling on the screen multiple times.

Apple Watch Series 2 - Go Time (video):

With the introduction of a new software platform, most users began to wonder whether this platform could become a full-fledged replacement for a smartphone. Of course not. Now the watch is as close as possible to the ideal combination of fitness tracker functions, a well-thought-out notification system and a control center for working with other devices.

Part of this improvement is due to the fact that the watch has a new dual-core processor, which is 50% faster than the processor of the first generation watch. But most of their watchOS 3 software, which will be included in all new Apple watches, isn't that new.

WatchOS 3 really makes your watch run faster. If you swipe down from the top of the watch screen, notifications will open. But now, when you swipe up from the bottom of the screen, you'll have access to a small command center that lets you handle notifications efficiently.

By pressing the physical button, a software platform with pre-installed applications opens, which allows you to view all available applications. So you don't have to open a menu with mini-application icons to select the one you need. You can change the look of your watch face by swiping your finger across the screen from edge to edge.

WATCHOS 3 - A WORTHY SOLUTION TO THE NEW APPLE WATCH

This also means you won't have to use Force Touch on the watch as much, although you can still use the feature to change and customize watch faces, or you can tap your location in the maps app to point to your other location. In addition, to complete the workout, you just need to swipe the screen instead of pressing on the screen as before.

You won't be able to try out third-party apps for now, as apps for watchOS 3 only recently became available. But in general, we can say that compared to the first generation of devices, the company has improved compatibility. Support for the shared data exchange protocol makes it possible to use third-party applications to adjust and register the data required for the watch.

For example, the RunKeeper app has an app based on watchOS 3, as does Runtastic, but another popular app for cyclists and athletes, Strava, does not yet have such an app. Naturally, the activity tracking app can receive data from the Strava app, but Strava does not react in any way to the user's achievements, that is, Strava is not fully functional in this case.

Room for improvement

Despite all the improvements, the original versions of the watch were not without bugs. Apple still has some work to do.

What's most annoying is that the display doesn't respond to wrist movements. And, despite the fact that the screen is now much brighter and easy to view in normal daylight, it continues to glare in direct sunlight. In addition, this watch has an OLED display with a mesh structure, rather than a reflective display like other sports watches. They also cannot measure altitude when you are exercising outdoors.

DEFECTS REMAIN

Why are there problems syncing iTunes on the watch, which can support up to 2 GB of music. Before this, there were no problems syncing with iTunes. An Apple spokesperson said the company is aware that this may impact some users' choices and is actively working to resolve the issue.

And finally, the battery of the new watch is decent enough to compensate for the time it takes to run with GPS turned on at maximum display brightness, compared to its competitors. And it is definitely better than the first watch: with moderate use of the watch, the service life can be increased to 12 hours. But you will still need to charge the watch daily since you exercise daily.

If you are planning to use your Apple Watch as a fitness tracker, then you should answer a number of questions for yourself below. If you already have an iPhone, do you really need a device with GPS and an application that works in notification mode for 25 thousand rubles? Athletes who have their sights set on triathlon should look for something equivalent, but for less money. In terms of activity tracking, the second generation watches have advanced over the first generation devices.

But before you give preference to these watches, you should think about what kind of ecosystem you want to coexist harmoniously in. Unlike most other wearable devices, even those powered by Google, when you buy an Apple Watch, you automatically become an Apple customer. iPhone plus Apple Watch plus AirPods is a great tandem. However, only one of these devices works well not in conjunction, and this, sadly, is not a watch.

APPLE WATCH Series 2 - the best option in the APPLE ecosystem

Apple Watch is also part of the modern consumer's worldview. Many people know about the existence of such modern technologies, but few think about why they need them. Basically, for many people, a smartphone or tablet is enough.

In general, these two devices are enough to interact with the world of high technology at the level of the average PC user. However, smartwatches are valuable because you don't have to use your phone to answer an incoming call.
