How to protect your home Wi-Fi network with a password. Login to router settings

Today, wireless networks have become extremely widespread and are used both at home and in production. This is due to the fact that you can easily connect to such a network within the range of the router. The mobility of the device that is connected also increases, since there is no need for a cable. In addition, money is saved on the purchase of wire and time on its installation.

No password. What to do?

Despite all the positive aspects, it is worth taking care of the security of the network, since without a password anyone can connect to it without permission and who are within the range of the router. Such connections lead to a drop in speed, as well as additional costs for traffic used by others. To prevent this from happening, measures must be taken.

Many users are very often interested in this question, although there are quite a lot of answers to it, especially since each router comes with instructions for setting a password. Some people don't want to read it, others just don't understand, but setting a password is not the most difficult task.

Principles for setting a password

Today there are a large number of different models of routers, but they have the same configuration principles. The first step is to check that the router is configured correctly. If everything is entered correctly, then the device will have access to the Internet. If access to the global network is not possible, this means that the router settings are incorrect. You must enter the data following the device instructions and the provider's recommendations.

Settings

When the router is configured correctly and the computer connects to the Internet, you need to set a Wi-Fi password. This can be done using a computer or laptop. It doesn’t matter how the devices are connected – via cable or wirelessly. You can also set a password using a tablet or smartphone.

To do this, you need to launch a browser on your computer. After downloading it, you need to enter 192.168.0.1 in the address bar, but sometimes this does not work, then you should enter 192.168.1.1. This should help.

Login to the interface

When the interface loads, a window will appear on the screen in which you must enter your username and password. To make things easier, manufacturers specify the value admin on each line. If after entering this username and password you cannot enter the settings, there may be two reasons for this.

One of them may be changing the login and password when installing the router. In this case, you should find out this information from the technician who set up the router. If this cannot be done, then you need to return the factory settings and change the password and login yourself.

Otherwise, the default values on the router are different. As a rule, the changed login and password are indicated on the bottom of the router or in the instructions.

After you have logged in, a page for setting up your router will appear on the screen. Each device has it, but the setup principles are practically the same. Very often there are models that do not support the Russian language. This may cause difficulties for users who do not speak English or do not know it well.

Verification algorithm

Here you should go to manual settings, where you need to find the item responsible for security. It will require you to set a password. To do this, you need to find the network authentication tab, which will offer several algorithms. The most reliable of them is WPA2-PSK.

After this, the “Encryption key” field will appear, in which you need to enter a combination of characters that will serve as a password to connect to the router. It is recommended that the password contain Latin letters and numbers. The length of the combination must not be less than eight characters.
After this, you need to click on the “Save” button and the system will issue a notification that the password change was successful.

A wireless Wi-Fi network is the most convenient way to connect to the Internet for mobile devices such as laptops, tablets and smartphones. Moreover, recently Wi-Fi technology is increasingly being used to connect regular desktop computers. This method of connecting to the World Wide Web allows you to get rid of ugly wires that can ruin any interior design.

However, when using a wireless connection, you must be aware of security. When setting up a home wireless network, many users simply do not know how to set a Wi-Fi password. As a result, they and the data transmitted over such a network are available to everyone. Now we will try to solve this problem.

Talking about how to set a password for Wi-Fi is not so easy. The fact is that now there are many wireless manufacturers. Each of these manufacturers uses its own shell to configure the router. To help with setting a password for a Wi-Fi network, we will look at the process step by step.

Step No. 1. Open the router's web interface

All modern routers are configured via a web interface. There is no need to be intimidated by the word “Web interface”, because in fact it is a small website that is hosted on the router and is accessible to the user from any browser.

Open your favorite browser and enter the IP address of your wireless router into the address bar. The router's IP address can be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. If you don’t know exactly what IP address your router has, you can simply try one first, and then the second.

After you have entered the IP address of the router, a form will appear in front of you in which you need to enter your login and password for access. If you are, you can read our article on this topic.

After entering your login and password, the router’s web interface will appear in front of you. In the picture below you can see the web interface of the ASUS router.

Step #2: Find the Wi-Fi settings section

In the web interface of the ASUS router, to access this section, just click on the “Wireless network” link in the “Advanced settings” section.

Step No. 3. Set a password for Wi-Fi

In the Wi-Fi settings section, you need to select the authentication method, encryption algorithm and enter the (key) to access Wi-Fi.

In the “authentication method” section, select WPA2. This is the newest and safest option. We choose the AES algorithm as the encryption algorithm; this is also the most reliable option. And of course, don’t forget to set a password for Wi-Fi. To do this, enter a set of numbers and symbols in the “Key” field. After all the settings are set, we save the result, in some cases

To ensure the security of your home network, you should password-protect your router after specifying the basic network settings. Changing the access key to the web interface will help protect your router settings from unauthorized entry. In addition to specifying a new password for the administrative panel, you should also select a complex access key for the WiFi network. If it is reliable enough, the attacker will not be able to get to the stage of changing the settings, even if he gains access to the wireless network.

Standard algorithm for changing passwords for any routers

First of all, you need to open your router's control panel. To do this, you need to know the IP address of the web interface, the standard login and password specified by the manufacturer. Typically, this data can be clarified on a sticker located on the bottom panel of the router. To enter the web interface, connect to the network, enter the desired IP address in the address bar of any browser and press “Enter” on the keyboard. In the dialog box that appears, enter the user name and standard key, then click the corresponding button in the interface.

After this, find the menu item responsible for the router’s system settings. In the factory firmware of most routers, this section is located at the bottom. Typically, you will need to enter your new device settings access code twice. In the first field you need to specify a new password, and in the second - its confirmation. On some routers, it is also possible to change the administrator name. It is recommended to change the default login if your device supports this feature.

Note! If the device was previously set up by another user, the default account information may not be suitable. It is recommended to perform a factory reset to be able to log into the control panel. For this operation, a separate button on the back panel of the device is usually used.

Password protection on a TP-Link router

The administrative interface of most TP-Link routers is standardized, so logging in should not be difficult. Typically the IP address 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 is used, the login and access key are the same, their value is admin. The exact data for a specific model can be found on the sticker at the bottom of the device or on the TP-Link website. In the menu that opens, go to the “System tools -> Password” section or “System tools -> Password” in the Russian version of the interface. In this menu you can:

  • Password protect the router;
  • Change username.

Specify a new password and, if necessary, a new login to log into the router’s web interface. The number of characters in both parameters should not exceed 15. It is recommended to use letters in different cases (upper and lower), numbers and special characters. The only exception is the space character; its use is not allowed.

Important! On new versions of the software, you can also use the universal address to enter the settings: tplinkwifi.net. The username and code do not change.

How to password protect an ASUS router

Launch any browser and type in the address bar the IP specified in the instructions (usually 192.168.1.1). Provide your username and password. If this information is unknown, check the instructions or one of the default login databases, such as Router Passwords. Open the link “Advanced settings -> Administration”, then go to the “System” tab. In the first table you can change the initial password set on the router. To apply the changes, restart your device.

The entire 2.4 GHz range is now filled with wireless networks in multi-storey buildings. There is a WiFi router in almost every apartment. But not everyone thinks about their safety. No, no, and you’ll find an open network somewhere without authorization. Today, when cobblers can be found on almost every corner, this should not be done under any circumstances! And that is why all network equipment manufacturers insist on one thing - you must have a Wi-Fi password on the router so that no one else can connect. Many people still insist that it is necessary to additionally enable filtering by MAC address, but I consider such a measure unnecessary for a regular home network.

On all modern WiFi modems and routers, installing password protection on a wireless network has an identical scenario, despite the difference in the appearance of the setup interface. For example, consider the most popular models - D-Link DIR-300 And DIR-615.

We start by looking at the sticker on the router. We are interested in the IP address and login with password:

After that, launch any web browser and enter the IP from the sticker into the address bar. In response, an authorization form should open.

Enter your username and password and go to the settings menu of the wireless router.

In order to password protect WiFi on a router or modem, you need to find the WiFi section in the menu.
Usually this section has a subsection Security Settings(Wireless Security). Let's go into it.

and

In order to correctly and competently password-protect a Wi-Fi wireless network on a router, you must first correctly select the security standard that will be used. To do this, in the "Network Authentication" list, select the value WPA2-PSK, Since today this is the most reliable and secure standard, allowing you to maximally protect your home WiFi from attacks from outside. Below we check that the “WPA encryption” list field contains the value AES. In the “PSK encryption key” field, you need to come up with and enter a password that the router will ask when clients try to connect to it via Wi-Fi. It is best done with a mixture of numbers and letters of the English alphabet. Network devices do not understand Russian Cyrillic. It is better to make the password length at least 8-10 characters, then it will be very difficult to crack it. Apply and save the settings. Now your router has securely protected WiFi.

Comment: I highly recommend without fail disable WPS technology. This is the only significant vulnerability that modern wireless routers are susceptible to. In order to do this, you need to go to the menu section, which is called “WPS” and uncheck “Enable”.

Gone are the days when the Internet was connected to a PC only through a wired connection. Now all modern gadgets support the Wi-Fi function and can work in a wireless network just as well as with a direct wired connection! In almost every apartment, a special device, a router, is used to meet Wi-Fi needs. These networks are mainly used for home or office services.

A wireless network can extend over tens of meters, depending on the power of the router. And to prevent uninvited guests from using your traffic, you need to know how to password protect your Wi-Fi router.

How to set a password on a wifi router (password)?

In this article we will look at the principle of changing the password, because regardless of the manufacturer, be it Asus, D-link, TP-link, Zyxel, it is identical. All the settings you set can be easily changed, and even easier to reset to factory settings. It is necessary to realize the importance of this action, because all devices are connected to a common local network and data can be accessed. To prevent this from happening, you must protect the network with a password!

Changing the router settings is done through the web interface. On the same label, on the back cover of the router, “site” is written, which consists only of numbers and dots (usually 192.168.1.1 or something similar). It must be entered into the address bar of the browser you use to view web pages. A window will open in front of you, where you need to enter the factory login and password indicated on the same label on the back of the router. By default they are set to “admin and admin”, respectively. Once you have entered this data, press the “Log In” button.

If someone changed the factory login and password of your router, or you simply forgot it, you can click the Reset button to return all the router settings (including the login and password to access its settings) to the original (default) ones. Usually the Reset button is pressed in and to press it you need to arm yourself with a match or a toothpick.

So, a site map has opened in front of you - this is the main menu for managing the router. Your task is to find the Security tab. After this, we will be taken to a page where you will need to find fields called “Password” and “Confirm the password”. Your task is to write the password you created in each field. We’ll tell you a little later which password is best to create to protect your network.

After you have written a new password in the two corresponding fields, press the Save Setting button. Ideally, change the login value by changing the standard “admin” to “hamer17” (for example), this way the router will be more protected from hacking - now you know how to set the wifi password.

Some users, after all the steps taken, are wondering how to change the wifi password. Yes, exactly the same way as putting it on! You need to log into the site map using your password and login. And in the Security tab, write a new password value, saving it, that’s all!

Even after changing the router password, do not forget to look and use it for free!

What password should I choose for WiFi?

This is the most important point regarding the protection of the entire wireless network system. There are often cases of hacking a Wi-Fi password by simply guessing it. Those. You need to use a password that no one will guess and that is difficult to guess. By the way, there are many programs for cracking (bringing) passwords, but even they will not be able to unravel a complex password; finding a complex password will take them several decades. So, consider the basic principles of creating a password:

  • Do not use a primitive password, discard the options qwerty or 12345 and the like!
  • The password must contain both numbers, letters, and special characters (*, %, #, etc.), then it is much more difficult to crack.
  • Use information that is not related to you. Those. year of birth or address of the house where you live is not suitable for a password.
  • When creating a password, consider the case of letters. In other words, the password must contain both lowercase and uppercase letters.

Attention! Your password must not be less than eight characters!

If you use the data, you can protect your wireless network 100%. That's all, the question turned out to be: “How to set a password for wifi?” not so difficult! Good luck in this difficult task!
