How to make maximum archive compression. Compressing files in WinRAR. What is archiving

Answers:

Khailov Konstantin Yurievich:
Well, you bent it. If this were possible, films would be sold on 2 floppy disks.

Victor:
What video format? If it's already a compressed avi, then no compression will help. If in another MPEG-2, DV, etc., then you can try to compress the virtual with oak, but the output quality with the parameters you specified, when you want to cram 250 mb into 1.5 mb, will be simply disgusting. And you don’t need WinRar in this matter at all, because it’s useless. It can only be used to transfer large films that do not fit on 1 CD. You need to create an archive without compression and specify the size of the output files as 700 mb, and after transferring the files to another computer, specify WinRar with the first of the received files and it will completely unpack everything. I don’t see any other use of WinRar in the video field.

Shurovik:
No way. The video is probably already compressed with a codec. But re-compression will have no effect.

D.A.E.M.O.N.:
Winrar won't help here. You can't compress a 250 MB video to that size.

Big_Aziz:
Well, you bent. There’s no way to compress it all. Yes, if you compress it, it won’t be a film, but something that will only make you sick. Fantastic. If only all this could be compressed in acceptable quality. I wish everyone good luck in their experiments!

Alexeyslav:
Scientifically speaking, the information redundancy of such a file should be simply fantastic! (compression 166 times). However, this situation can only happen if there is one dot on the screen and the file is in RAW format (not compressed). This option is also in doubt. The maximum compression ratio for Winrar under ideal conditions is about 30-40 times and depends on the block size used in the compression algorithm. and here you need to compress it by 166 times, this is simply unthinkable... any mathematician would turn over in his grave upon hearing such numbers.

Oleg:
And if you meant “split into pieces the size of a floppy disk,” then simply indicate the size in the “Archive name and parameters” window at the bottom left “Split into volumes...”. I just can’t believe that the question is so... incorrect.

Vengant:
No way. This level of video compression does not exist.

Kolesnikov Valery:
I advise you to read literature on this topic in order to have an idea about these things and not ask such questions.

Sokol:
Friends, no matter how paradoxical it may be, I recently downloaded a video archive in rar format from the Internet, which weighed 2.5 MB. I thought it was a phone video. No matter how it is! I unzipped it, and there was a 10-minute video with amazing resolution. The unzipped video, in AVI format, weighed 102 megabytes. So I was wondering how this could be...

Virtual_Jack:
I'm also interested in the answer. I have a 4 Giga video, compressed into a 100-meter archive, without loss of quality.

When sending large files by email, you cannot always be sure that they will reach the recipient. This is due to restrictions on the size of downloaded and transmitted materials established on such web resources. How to solve this problem? As easy as pie. All you need to do is use the archiving function. Don't know how it doesn't work? Want to understand how to zip a file? In this case, use the detailed instructions.

Method No. 1: Archive the file in zip using Windows

This data compression option can be used on computers of various versions of Windows OS, since the function of creating a ZIP folder is included in absolutely all operating system packages from Microsoft.

Method No. 2: Archive documents in zip format using special programs

If you need to compress voluminous materials to the maximum, it is better to use special archivers, for example, the WinRAR program.

This program is good because in addition to fast and high-quality compression of files in various formats (zip, rar), access to it is absolutely free. To do this, it is enough to visit the official website of the developer.

In addition, it is possible to select additional archiving options:

  • archive in the background;
  • turn off the PC after completing the operation;
  • wait if another document is being archived;
  • exclude individual files from archiving (if a folder with several documents is being archived);
  • create a backup;
  • select the time detection function;
  • add a comment to the archive.

To do this, you need to respectively select the tabs “Advanced”, “File”, “Time”, “Comment” and others. In any case, after making the settings, do not forget to click the “OK” button so that the file compression process begins:

As you can see, archiving a file in zip format is quite simple!

What do you do when you need to send, for example, dozens of pdf or jpg files by email? It is best to compress them into one zip or rar archive to a minimum size.

Maybe you need more space on your hard drive or a collection of data does not fit on a memory card?

Then just squeeze them. Packed several into one is significantly smaller than the overall size.

For many, these are trivial questions, but many are also looking for answers. This quick guide covers the simplest methods.

To do this, you can use online services, programs or built-in tools in Windows 7 - Windows 10.

You can compress a large file, for example, with a game, strongly - to the maximum, to the minimum size, to the desired size and without loss of quality, for example, a photo.

Compressing files in Windows 7 - Windows 10 using built-in tools

Let's start with how to compress data in the still most popular operating system for personal computers and laptops - Windows 7, although Windows 8 and Windows 10 are similar.

This operation is very simple. Using Windows Explorer, call the standard system file manager.

To do this, open the folder containing the files you want to pack into one compressed archive file.

Then, select everything using the mouse or the keyboard shortcut - Ctrl+A. After you select the data that needs to be compressed, right-click on any of them.

Then move the cursor to the “send” line and click on the option – “compressed zip folder”.

After calling these commands, the system will begin the data compression procedure. You will see a dialog box in which you can monitor the progress of the process.

If in the future you want to unpack the compressed archive file, right-click on the archive and select “extract”.

A few technical details when compressing files into an archive

How is data compression done? It is the process of transforming a set of data to store information in fewer bits.

In this digital reality, there are two forms of compression: lossy and lossless.

The first is used most often in relation to video, digital images and sound.

Lossy compression has significantly higher efficiency (the size is reduced even several tens of times than the corresponding data stored in uncompressed form).

Only then is the original information irretrievably lost (for example, in the case of sounds, the least important ones for Chekhov’s ear are cut off, similarly in the case of an image, the number of details, tonal range, color depth, etc. is reduced), but the user still has access to the basic information (video, photo, music).

In the case of lossless compression, it is most often used in the case of any packaging of user-selected files on your computer and the size can be exactly the same as the original.

In general, file compression is most often used not only to reduce the amount of data, but to make it easier to transport (for example, send by email) a large collection of several files.

The methods described above are based on the use of a function built into the operating system.

Obviously this is not the only method. Many users use additional archiver applications.

If you are looking for an easy to use and efficient application to compress and decompress files and folders, then good luck.

Good day!

PDF files seem to be good for everyone, but they have one cornerstone... The fact is that the size of some PDF files is far from “ideal”; often, when they weigh even 100÷500 MB, sometimes it reaches 1 GB! Moreover, such a file size is not always justified: i.e. it doesn't have any very high-precision graphics that take up so much space.

Of course, when you are dealing with such a size, there are difficulties in transferring it to other PCs, tablets, phones (for example, your phone simply may not have enough memory for dozens of similar files!) .

In such cases, you can reduce the size of the PDF "somewhat" by compressing it. By the way, compression can be done in different ways. Actually, this is what today's article will be about...

By the way! If you remove some pages from a PDF document, you can reduce its size. If this option suits you, then I recommend this note:

Method No. 1: archiving

Perhaps the simplest and most obvious is to add PDF files to the archive. Thus, sometimes it is possible to significantly reduce the size they occupy. In addition, it is much faster and more convenient to copy one archive file from one PC to another (rather than a dozen, or even a hundred PDF documents) .

Addition! The best free archivers for Windows -

To send a file to the archive, just 1-2 mouse clicks are enough. For example, in such a popular archiver as 7-Zip (you can also find it in the link above) : just right-click on the file and select from the menu that appears "Add to archive..." . See screenshot below.

In fact, my file was compressed almost 3 times! Example below.

Advantages of the method:

  • after unpacking the archive, the PDF file does not lose its quality;
  • ZIP archive formats can be opened by most modern ones;
  • one archive file (with hundreds of PDFs inside) is copied much faster than doing the same with the same files without adding them to the archive.

Disadvantages of this method:

  • to open a file, you need to extract it from the archive (and not all PCs/phones/tablets may have the required archiver installed);
  • Not all files can be compressed equally well: one can be compressed very decently, another by 0.5%...
  • When choosing some archive formats, it may take considerable time to pack the files.

Method number 2: compression using quality reduction (DPI)

DPI is the number of dots per inch. The more dots per inch, the higher the quality of the displayed image (and the larger the file weighs). Naturally, when resaving a PDF file, you can specify a new number of dots per inch (DPI) and thereby reduce the file size (along with its quality).

However, I’ll immediately note that not always when the DPI is reduced, the picture quality deteriorates (in many cases you won’t notice the difference by eye!).

You can do a similar procedure in many programs : Adobe Acrobat (not to be confused with Adobe Reader), Fine Reader, Cute PDF Writer, Libre Office, etc. Below I will give a couple of free examples...

1) Libre Office ()

A good and free office suite (I have previously recommended it as an alternative to MS Office). It has the DRAW program in its arsenal, which can easily and easily make changes to PDF (including changing DPI). Let's take a closer look...

To launch DRAW - launch Libre Office, and select "DRAW Drawing" from the menu.

A window will open with many options for saving. Here you can change the compression quality, resolution (DPI) and other parameters. In general, I have highlighted the most necessary things in the screenshot below.

After setting the parameters, click the export button to create a new file.

Fast, simple and easy! Is not it?

2) CutePDF Writer ()

This free program, after installation, "creates" a separate special line when printing a document (with the necessary properties for compression)...

Those. install it, then open some PDF file, say, in Adobe Reader (can be used in any other PDF reader) and click "Print" (combination Ctrl+P).

Then select the line " CutePDF Writer", and open its "Properties".

Properties of CutePDF Writer

Then you need to open the print quality tab and go to “Advanced”.

Here you can set the print quality in DPI (and other parameters).

NOTE.

By the way, you need to install both files, which are available on the program’s official website!

Advantages of the method:

  • we do not lose compatibility (the file remains the same PDF);
  • the operation goes quite quickly;
  • The DPI change operation can be carried out by dozens of different programs.

Disadvantages of this method:

  • in some cases, the quality drops significantly (for example, if you are dealing with schemes and high-quality portfolios, this option most likely will not work).

Method number 3: converting to DjVU format

The DjVU format, on average, provides stronger compression than PDF. And we must admit that DjVU is one of the few formats that really competes with it.

To convert from PDF to DjVU, in my opinion, it is most preferable to use one small utility - PdfToDjvuGUI .

PdfToDjvuGUI

Of. website: http://www.trustfm.net/software/utilities/PdfToDjvuGUI.php

Note: Please note that the utility sometimes incorrectly reads the “names” of files written in Russian.

PDF to DjVU - a small utility

It’s very simple to use: just add the desired file (Add PDF), set the settings (you don’t have to touch anything) and press the button "Generate DjVU". A “black” window should appear for a while, after which the program will inform you that the file has been re-converted.

By the way, the program will place the DjVU file in the same folder where the original PDF was located. As an example, see the screenshot below. Without changing the quality (and the program allows you to change the DPI), we managed to reduce the space occupied by the file by almost 2 times!

PS

Below are a few more online services that can perform a similar conversion operation.

Advantages of the method:

  • maximum file compression (i.e. saving disk space!);
  • the file can be immediately opened in the reader, just as you do with PDF (i.e. it is not an archive).

Disadvantages of this method:

  • Large files require significant conversion time;
  • quality may be “lost” during conversion (so check important graphs manually to see how they were compressed);
  • The DjVU format supports fewer programs than PDF.

Method #4: Using Online Tools

An excellent site for quick compression and conversion from one format to another. Files up to 20-30 MB in size are processed literally within 10-15 seconds! The service does not affect document markup, links, menus, etc. elements. Compression occurs due to graphics (that is, the PDI parameter).

Another universal service for quickly converting PDF to DjVU, or compressing PDF without changing the format. The result can not only be downloaded to your PC, but also immediately sent to a cloud drive: Google Drive, Dropbox...

The service offers 3 compression levels: minimal, normal and extreme. It works very quickly, processes files up to 3-040 MB in 5-10 seconds. (at least that was the case with my dozen test files) .

The files have been compressed // Service "I love DPF"

I will also note that on this service you can split a PDF file into several parts, convert it to other formats, combine several PDFs, etc. In general, it’s quite a multifunctional service, I recommend you check it out!

Advantages:

  • no need to install any programs on your computer;
  • services can be used even from mobile devices;
  • As a rule, compression of small files on services is faster.

Flaws:

  • confidentiality (I think not everyone will decide to send some of their documents to an unfamiliar service);
  • the need to upload/download files to the service (if the Internet is not very fast and there are a lot of files, this will turn into a headache).

Additions on the topic are welcome...

Hi all! Not so long ago, when hard drives were small and the Internet was like a “turtle,” no one asked the question of how to compress a file - everyone already knew everything, because floppy disks were one and a half megabytes each, and flash drives in Windows 98 required installation drivers! (and they cost as much as a cast iron bridge)

However, the need to compress files has not gone away, it just does not always have an obvious benefit in file size. There is a practical application of compression in the use of email, because not everyone has high-speed Internet, and there is no point in sending hundreds of megabytes of information over the Internet if they can be reduced, for example, to several dozen!

How to compress a file with the 7 Zip archiver?

Surely many people have a paid and broken WinRAR archiver, but we will use a free alternative in the form of 7 Zip, information about installation and configuration of which you can read. After you installed this archiver, the line was added to the context menu (this is when you right-click on files) 7-Zip, this is where the compression options come in.

You can simply click "Add to"<ИМЯ ФАЙЛА>.zip" and get a zip-archived file with default compression settings, but I want to show the compression settings. We need to select “Add to archive...”

In the Archive line we can come up with a name for our archive; by default it will be the same as in the original file. A very important parameter: “Archive format”. I recommend that you use ZIP - this format is a hundred years old and you can work with it without installing third-party software, but its compression is not always satisfactory. Next, you can set a password for our archive (if there is such a need)

Our archive has been created, as you can see - the difference is not particularly visible, but imagine that a 1C database of 800 megabytes is easily compressed into 150, and this is already significant even in today's realities.

Let's try another common compression format - 7Z. If you choose maximum compression, you will have to be patient - everything happens much slower if we compressed it in Zip.

However, looking at the screen below you can see a significant difference between zip and 7z. The 7z format compresses much better, but requires more resources and an installed archiver.

Of course, this is not the only way to compress a file; there are many more options. I just want to add on my own behalf - do not try to compress videos or pictures, the archives we are used to will not give practically any gain in file size, but it will take a lot of time. Well, that’s all, now you know how to compress a file with the 7 Zip archiver :)
