Work in the background

The navigator can work in the background, i.e., guide you along the route and give hints when the application is minimized. Background support works both with and without a constructed route.

In the modern world, movement is an integral part of everyday life. The presence of cars and roads gradually speeds up the already fast pace. The introduction of innovative technologies into the movement process has significantly simplified the implementation of movement.

Software systems that help the driver quickly figure out the route have gained great popularity. In our country, users give the greatest preference to the automated system "Yandex.Navigator", reviews of which eloquently reflect the opinion of users on this matter. And free distribution and unhindered installation on any available device only increase this effect.

"Yandex.Navigator": a brief overview

Yandex.Navigator is available on all currently popular platforms - Android, iOS, Windows Phone. The main task of this software product is to calculate and plot the optimal route for movement. The system is free.

In addition to its main tasks, the navigator shows the presence of traffic jams, accidents and simply road events along the route, the display of which, by the way, can be created by the users themselves, since the functionality allows this. The latest versions implement payment of fines through Yandex.Navigator. Reviews from numerous users vary, but from the overall picture you can understand that the application is truly reliable and necessary. In addition, developers quickly respond to feedback from owners and correct errors that appear.

Application interface

The application interface is essentially a Yandex.Maps service optimized for route calculations. To make it easier to track your current location, in the settings you can switch to 3D mode, which tilts the camera slightly, slightly opening the view in the desired direction.

The map can display current events on the road, such as accidents, traffic jams or road works. You can enable their display using a special filter.

The voice control function can be a very convenient solution for using the navigator while driving. Although the ability to manually select a destination is also present. There are even two of them - in the form of a rubricator and a text line with tips.

For up-to-date and stable operation of the card, a constant Internet connection is required.

Instructions for use

Depending on the existing platform, before you start using Yandex.Navigator, you need to install it. It is available for free in the app stores of the corresponding brand - Android, iOS or Windows.

After the first launch of the application, you should wait until the exact location is determined using GPS or based on cell towers. The system will find the device and display it on the map as a green mark.

When you tap it, a panel with controls will appear at the bottom of the screen. Depending on the current state, their purpose may vary. But before moving, they will have the following functionality:

  1. "Search". Takes you to the destination menu.
  2. "Map". This mode is used to go directly to the map from other menus.
  3. "My places." You can add frequently used routes to this item.
  4. "Menu". Contains basic program settings.

Application configuration

By switching from the main screen to the settings mode using the “Menu” button, you can set the necessary parameters to your liking. There are actually a lot of functions. Here you can determine how the map will look, select night or day mode, and download complete sets of maps.

As for the sound notification, here you can also set the language and select the announcer’s voice. The current version allows you to install one of 4 options: Dima, Oksana, Utkin and Fyodor Bondarchuk, added in one of the latest updates to the Yandex.Navigator application. Reviews, by the way, are full of user reports that their gadget now speaks in the voice of a famous director.

Additionally, you can configure which events should be notified about, for example, speeding. Other settings include updates, events and synchronization.

You can also view available fines online from the menu and pay them immediately. To do this, just enter your driver's license number, registration certificate and your first and last name.

The “My trips” item allows you to view travel statistics. However, for this you will need to log in to the Yandex service.

If something bad happened on the road and the car was broken down, you can call a tow truck from the menu. Requests for assistance in starting the car, delivering fuel or changing a tire are also available.

Building a route

To build a route to your destination, you need to wait until the device’s location is determined. Then touch the screen to display a pop-up menu. In it you need to select the “Search” button. If you have already traveled along this route using a navigator, it is saved in the “History” tab. If you need a new one, then you can create it in three ways.

In cases where the destination belongs to frequently visited places, such as cafes, restaurants, gas stations, cinemas and others, then a simple method would be to use a rubricator. By finding a category and clicking on it, you can see marks on the map of all places belonging to this type. When you select one of them, you will be asked to get directions using the “Here” button.

You can also enter the destination definition manually using the keyboard or by voice. After pronouncing the desired address, the system will recognize and offer the most suitable option. The target is also selected from the list and the route is calculated.

Movement

After the strip along which you need to move is displayed on the map, just click on the “Let’s go” button to start moving. It is worth noting that Yandex.Navigator can offer several route options, the description of which will indicate the approximate travel time.

Once you find your destination on the map, it will appear with a blue mark. When you click on it, a context menu will appear, through which the route calculation begins. If, instead of the “Here” button, you click on the top part of the menu, a panel with information about this point, phone number, operating mode and other information will be displayed. Here you can move this item to the “My Places” category in order to visit it later, or call directly from the application by activating the item with the phone number line.

While driving, the navigator will periodically notify the driver about the need to turn in the desired direction using the selected voice. Moreover, the color of the route strip may be different depending on the traffic congestion. For example, green means that the path is clear, and red means there is a congestion or traffic is difficult. The map also displays speed cameras, which is very convenient.

"Yandex.Navigator": user reviews

The navigator has become a part of the lives of many drivers. For example, the application has been downloaded more than 10 million times from Google Play. "Yandex.Navigator" for Android, the reviews of which are very diverse, occupies a leading position among other navigation programs in this store.

Users note that the application is accessible, but there are some shortcomings. Some people would like to see the fuel type displayed on the map along with gas station icons. Many complaints are directed at the fact that the navigator does not always build an accurate route or calculates it without taking into account detours and shortcuts.

Users were also amused by the voice of Fyodor Bondarchuk, added several updates ago to Yandex.Navigator for Android. User reviews immediately notified this. The director’s speech sounds exactly as everyone is accustomed to, with characteristic phrases and turns of phrase.

In general, we can conclude that users are satisfied with the application and are willing to install Yandex.Navigator on Android. Reviews are mostly positive. In addition, the development team responds to them very quickly.

Yandex.Navigator is one of the most common navigators for Android OS in Russia. The application boasts rich functionality, an interface entirely in Russian and the absence of intrusive advertising. Another indisputable advantage is that it is absolutely free. The rest of the article will tell you how to use Yandex.Navigator on your smartphone.

After reading the material below, you will learn how to set up a navigator, get directions online and offline, and use its additional tools in unexpected situations on the road.

Step 1: Install the application

To download Yandex.Navigator on an Android smartphone, follow the link below, click on the button "Install" and wait for the application to finish downloading to your smartphone.

Step 2: Setup

  1. To make the navigator convenient to use, you need to customize it for yourself. Therefore, after installation, go to Yandex.Navigator by clicking on the application icon on the desktop of your smartphone.
  2. When you first launch it, two requests for permission to allow the application to access geolocations and the microphone will pop up on the screen. For Yandex.Navigator to work correctly, it is recommended to give your consent - click "Allow" in both cases.
  3. Once you confirm your permissions, a map will open with an arrow icon showing your location.

  4. Next, click on the button "Menu" in the lower right corner of the screen and go to "Settings". First there will be a column of settings related to the card. Let's consider only those that really affect the use of the navigator.
  5. Go to the tab "Card view" and choose between standard street and road maps or satellite. Everyone sees maps differently, but schematic maps are more convenient to use.
  6. To use the navigator offline, go to the menu item and click on the search bar. Next, select the proposed maps of countries, regions, territories, cities and numerous provinces or use the search by writing the name of the area you need.
  7. To change your location icon, go to the tab "Cursor" and choose one of three options.
  8. Another important settings column is "Sound".
  9. To select the language you are interested in, in which the navigator will show you the route and other information about the road, go to the appropriate tab and click on one of the proposed languages. Then, to return to settings, click on the arrow in the upper left corner.

  10. To select a voice assistant, go to the tab "Speaker" and select the voice acting you are interested in. In foreign languages there will be standard male and female voices, and six positions are available in Russian.
  11. For complete convenience, it is advisable to leave the remaining three items enabled. Voice activation will help you navigate your route without taking your eyes off the road. Just say the destination address after the command "Listen, Yandex".

This concludes the basic settings for ease of use of the navigator. There will be a few more items at the bottom of the list of parameters, but they are not so significant that we need to focus on them.

Step 3: Using the Navigator

After that, you just have to follow the instructions of the announcer. But do not forget that this is a technique that can sometimes make mistakes. Pay close attention to the road and road signs.

Yandex.Navigator can also show traffic congestion to avoid getting stuck in a traffic jam. To activate this function, click on the traffic light icon in the upper right corner. After this, the city's roads will become multi-colored, which indicates how busy they are at the moment. Roads are green, yellow, orange and red - the gradation goes from a free road to a long-term traffic jam.

For user convenience, Yandex.Navigator developers have added the function of indicating comments on road events, which are available to any driver or pedestrian who is not indifferent to incidents. If you want to add an event, click on the triangle icon with a plus inside.

A list of pointers that you can place on the map with any comment will immediately open at the top of the screen. Whether it's an accident, road repairs, cameras or any other incident, select the desired sign, write a comment, point to the desired place and click "Install".

Then a small pointer will be visible on the map at this location. Click on it and you will see information from the user.

Recently, Yandex.Navigator added a function for displaying parking lots. To activate it, click on the button in the lower left corner in the form of an English letter "P".

Now on the map you will see all the parking spaces available in the locality where you are. They will be highlighted with blue stripes.

At this step, the main work with the navigator is completed. Additional options will be discussed next.

Step 4: Work offline

If you don’t have the Internet at hand, but have a working smartphone with a GPS receiver, then Yandex.Navigator will help you get to the right point in this case too. But only on the condition that maps of your area have already been downloaded to your smartphone or the route you have previously built has been saved.

With the available maps, the algorithm for constructing a route will be similar to the online mode. And in order to save the required route in advance, click on the button "My places".

The next step is to indicate your home and work addresses, and in the line "Favorites" add the addresses where you often go.

Now to use the app offline with pre-loaded maps, say a voice command "Listen, Yandex" and specify or manually select the place where you want to route.

Step 5: Working with Tools

The menu has a group of tabs called "Tools", and several of them may be useful to you. They only work with an active Internet connection on your Android smartphone.

This concludes our instructions for using the application. There are many interesting and long-existing solutions of this kind, but Yandex.Navigator boldly holds among them in good standing with many users. Therefore, feel free to install it on your device and enjoy it.

Literally ten years ago it was impossible to imagine that using a mobile phone we would soon be able to plot our routes, look for interesting places, and avoid traffic jams. At that time, navigation was the domain of professionals and only closed and paid mapping services and devices were present on the market. Today everything has changed dramatically. Let's see what Yandex.Maps from 2013 cost for mobile devices.

Map coverage

Today, maps from Yandex are one of the leaders in the mapping market, not much inferior in terms of territory coverage to other more well-known leaders - Garmin and Navitel. However, Yandex also has a number of obvious advantages. Many organizations and entrepreneurs are very interested in being present in Yandex.Maps, because this promotion model allows them to reach both the audience that accesses the Internet from personal computers and those whose main portal to the network is a mobile phone.

The Yandex.Maps project, which we see in our browser window, cannot be called young. But a mobile application is a relatively new project, judging by IT standards. However, this does not prevent the project from covering more than 380 cities in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. And for 38 cities of Russia and 21 cities of Ukraine there are even public transport maps.

Yandex.Maps for mobile devices

After installation, the program is immediately ready to work. Using Wi-Fi networks or GPS sensors, the user’s current location is established and the section of the map that is needed is loaded.

Previously, mobile cards always required an Internet connection. But these dark times have passed and now you can download the entire map of the desired city into your phone or tablet in advance. The list of maps available for download is significant. It includes official assemblies of Yandex maps and People's maps. The developers do not promise that their application will work 100% without an Internet connection, but this will save you a lot of mobile traffic.

In general, the mobile version of Maps can be used in three modes: scheme, satellite and folk.

In a city that is well covered by the service, the scheme will be useful. In a small town, the people's map may be more complete. The satellite will help outside the city (if there is access to the network).

Yandex.Traffic

In addition to significant coverage of the territory of the CIS countries, Yandex.Maps has another very strong trump card - information about traffic jams. This information is updated automatically.

Also on the map, road users can indicate a dangerous place: an accident, road work, a traffic police camera or something else. This is done by clicking on the button with an exclamation mark. Some card users manage to communicate with each other in this way.

Navigation

Yandex.Maps, if there is an Internet connection, can plot driving routes both with and without traffic jams. But the main achievement of the new version of the application, of course, is the emergence of the ability to plot a route using public transport. This is what such a route looks like.

As noted above, so far public transport schemes have been implemented only for the largest cities in Russia and Ukraine.

Search for places of interest

It's still Yandex! The search for places of interest (POI) is implemented at a high level here. However, I must warn you that for full-fledged work it would still be better to have an Internet connection. This way you can receive the latest information about cafes, restaurants, pharmacies and a bunch of other places.

Street panoramas will allow you to identify the establishment on the spot, which is very convenient if you are in an unfamiliar area or city.

Street panoramas

In the mobile application, as in “adult” maps, you can view street panoramas. From experience, I can say that this helps a lot in assessing an establishment or hotel before you go on a trip.

Conclusion

So, we have in our hands a serious competitor to Garmin and Navitel. Leaders and veterans of the navigation market should try not to lose in this competitive war that is beneficial for us. As part of testing, I tested these cards in three cities in Russia and two in Ukraine. The result is positive.

I note that to “drive” using Yandex.Maps, you need the Yandex.Navigator application, which is also free and available in the Google and Apple app stores.
