    Description of the receiver GS-8304

    So, General Satellite has pleased us with a new receiver model 83XX series to watch Tricolor TV channels. This model has been available on the market since the summer of 2011. New GS-8304 MPEG-4 receiver performs the entire set of functions familiar to a tricolor receiver - receiving and displaying channels from the "Optimum" and "Super-Optimum" packages. We will rather focus on what changes the receiver has undergone compared to the previous model GS-8300N. The changes that have occurred can be easily assessed from the photo below. The photo shows the back panels of 2 receivers - the lower GS8300n and the upper - receiver for tricolor GS 8304.

    Judging by the photo, it is clear that the manufacturer excluded at the receiver GS 8304 2nd scart output and replaced it with RCA (tulips) output. From the design of the new model gs 8304 The port for flashing the RS-232 receiver firmware has disappeared. However, the manufacturer compensated for this loss with a USB connector through which you can reflash the receiver if the need arises.
    Design changes receiver GS 8304 We also touched the power supply - it became remote. This will improve the cooling of the receiver, because... one of the “warm” nodes is now located outside the receiver body. Those who have encountered GS receivers know that the power supply units of these devices often fail and the fact that the receiver’s power supply has become external greatly simplifies the procedure for diagnosing and replacing a failed power supply. Now, in the event of a power supply failure, it is enough to simply replace it - there is no need to disassemble the receiver body. The help of a qualified specialist - as was the case before - will no longer be required. It is enough to select a new power supply with similar performance characteristics (supply voltage, current and corresponding plug). On the back panel of the gs 8304 there is a connector for connecting an external power supply.
    Just like other predecessors of the eight thousandth series The GS 8304 receiver does not have a built-in RF modulator, which eliminates the possibility of parallel connection of additional TVs without the use of additional equipment.
    It seems that GS is constantly looking for ways to reduce the cost of the receiver design - Model 8304 does not have optical audio output (SPDIF). Perhaps its absence is justified - experience shows that this solution is rarely used. The manufacturer also considered the receiver on/off switch on the case unnecessary and excluded it from the design. Actually, now there is no slot for SD cards in the design - if you open the curtain on the front side of the receiver, then under it you will only find a slot for a smart access card. The packaging of the GS-8304 receiver has also undergone changes. You can recognize the new receiver by the new packaging design. The receiver's remote control remains the same as that of the GS 8300N model.
    The current receiver software does not support disk drives. It is not possible to configure free (FTA) channels (Europe Plus, etc.). There is no option to delete unnecessary channels. It is not possible to change the order of channels. There is only the ability to create favorite lists (like NTV+ on the Humax VA4SD receiver). Scarce. But it is almost impossible to knock down or damage the settings. Compared to previous models 83XX series of receivers for Tricolor, this receiver has a different menu for displaying the channel list. It holds fewer channels and navigation through the channel list has become less convenient.
    Impressions from the receiver are contradictory. We don't recommend it. Better than GS 8300N. This is our humble opinion.

    The teletext decoder works fine, without any complaints.

    The receiver recognizes the presence of TTX and DBV subtitles in the transport stream and decodes them correctly.

    The “TV Chat” service operates on the “Veseloye TV” and “Teletravel” channels. The TV chat window is called up by pressing the TV CHAT button on the remote control.

    Selecting an alternative audio track. The General Satellite GS-8304 receiver correctly recognizes the presence of multilingual audio, as well as a Dolby Digital track.

TV set-top boxes, with which you can watch digital TV channels, have long become commonplace, which will not surprise anyone. However, like any other technical device with its own firmware, such a receiver requires periodic updating, for example, after the release of new software, due to malfunctions or other reasons. Tricolor TV GS 8304 is no exception.

Despite the fact that most of the population prefers to call a specialist to update the receiver’s firmware, in fact this is not such a difficult task that you can’t handle it yourself. On the other hand, if you treat it too carelessly and inattentively, equipment repair will cost more.

Thanks to updates to receivers and their modules, the device is modernized, improved and becomes more comfortable to use. However, before updating the software, you definitely need to find out what the version of the current firmware is (in the settings via the remote control) and what is the latest version released for your model, in this case GS 8304. It is not recommended to use third-party information resources for this, all necessary and up-to-date Information is available on the official website of Tricolor TV.

Satellite update

The simplest update for Tricolor TV GS 8304 is automatic, carried out directly via satellite. To do this, the receiver must be connected to a satellite tuned dish. The sequence of actions for such firmware includes:

  • Unplugging the receiver cord from the power supply and plugging it back into the outlet;
  • Switching the receiver to channel 333 from the general list;
  • A notification appears on the screen indicating whether a software update is needed;
  • If the current and latest released versions do not match, you should select the Yes button (consent to update) and press OK from the remote control;
  • Waiting for the automatic update process to complete.

It is worth noting that after the user clicks OK and starts the process, service messages will appear on the screen. There is no need to do anything about this; the procedure takes on average less than ten minutes. It is strictly forbidden to turn off the TV and receiver during the update.

  • Inserting the drive into the USB connector of the GS 8304 receiver and turning it on (it is possible to connect the receiver directly to a computer via an RS-232 cable);
  • Once the file is opened, it will begin updating automatically. The process will be displayed on the TV screen;
  • Upon completion, the drive should be removed, the receiver should be rebooted and the software module should be updated;
  • To do this, turn on the receiver, reinsert the same drive and start updating the module. Upon completion, reboot again.

What else you need to know about manual installation

The required update file is called update.otm. When copying it to a flash drive, it is important to remember that there should not be any more information on it. There should also be no folders or arbitrary renamings. In general, manually installing an update is not so difficult, but it requires a little more time and a free USB drive. The same applies to the module, which is updated many times faster.

Even if the receiver works without failures, it is recommended to monitor updates, otherwise if the need arises for flashing, the procedure will become somewhat more complicated. In addition, it is important not to forget about updating television channels on the Tricolor TV GS 8304. The need for this arises if you want to find new television channels, after maintenance work (can be carried out once or twice a year), during the first setup, changing the frequency of certain channels.

Receiver GS-8302.First impressions.

On the issue of improving image quality, one thing can be said: Image with GS-8302 an order of magnitude higher than the image from the GS-8304 and this is visible to the naked eye!

To be honest, I liked the device. The picture on the Philip 104 via HDMI is better than via Scart or AV.

Thanks to the manufacturers for taking into account all the wishes of the dealers... now the receiver has a complete set of all connectors.

  • Let us remind you that the GS-8304 has only a few inputs/outputs on the rear panel, namely: a USB input for flashing the receiver, an input for connecting an antenna, a composite audio-video output and a SCART output;
  • V GS 8302 all the inputs/outputs of its predecessor are present plus: HDMI output for connecting the receiver to TV via HD, RF OUT for connecting the receiver to TV using a regular coaxial cable, RF IN connector for connecting an over-the-air antenna or cable to the CATV network, LNB OUT - loop output S/PDIF.

The most useful of all the new inputs/outputs receiver GS 8302 we believe HD output and RF OUT. Let us explain why: the presence of RF OUT allows you to cheaply, without the use of special devices such as an AV sender (cost from 2000 rubles) or an RF modulator, “distribute” a signal from one receiver to several TVs (parallel), and the presence of GS-8302 HD output allows you to connect the receiver to the TV using HDMI cable, which significantly improves image quality!

As you would expect, when searching, it finds only the channels Tricolor + 2 FTA.Soyuz and 8-channel + Radio Resurrection.

Actually, the installation menu does not suggest searching for anything else “not ours”.

The main menu itself.

I would like to note one more advantage: the ability to edit channels has appeared.
Maps of the 13th and 14th series are read normally. There are no others, so they have not been checked. The search for channels is very fast. The second walleyes are threshing, no KKD has been observed yet.

A more informative (compared to the previous model) sign informing about a short circuit on the line. The red circle will make the owner wary.

Three-color signal strength scale.

Compared to the previous model, the receiver does not differ much in current consumption.
Maximum 0.8 A. The power supply is standard like the 8304.
The EPG has become more convenient. Now on the selected channel, you can view the program program for the day by simply pressing the cursor left or right. In addition, the “green button” function has been preserved, allowing you to fully expand the entire list for the day.

There are only positive emotions so far.

To sum up, we can rejoice at the company’s success Tricolor TV in terms of increasing the functionality of the equipment. And the appearance of Tricolor TV HD receivers, can be regarded as the first step towards the transition to digital High Defenition broadcasting.
