Deployment

MBR2GPT.EXE

MBR2GPT.EXE is a new command line tool available in Windows 10 version 1703 and later. MBR2GPT converts a disk from a Master Boot Record (MBR) partition style to a GPT Partition Table (GPT) partition style without changing or deleting data on the disk. The tool runs in the Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) command line, but can also be run on the full Windows 10 operating system.

The GPT partition format is newer and allows for larger and additional disk partitions. In addition, it improves data storage reliability, supports additional partition types, and speeds up loading and shutdown. If you want to convert the system disk on your computer from MBR to GPT, you must also configure the computer to boot in UEFI mode. Before converting your system drive, make sure your device supports UEFI.

Booting into UEFI mode enables additional Windows 10 security features: Secure Boot, Early Launch Anti-Malware (ELAM) Driver, Windows Trusted Boot, Measured Boot, Device Guard, Credential Guard, and BitLocker Network Unlocking.

Removed built-in apps will no longer be reinstalled automatically

Starting with Windows 10 version 1703, built-in apps that you uninstalled are not automatically installed during the feature update process.

Additionally, apps that are revoked by administrators on PCs running Windows 10 version 1703 will remain in their revoked state after future feature updates are installed. This does not apply to updates for Windows 10 versions 1607 (or earlier) to 1703.

Control

New MDM Features

Windows 10 version 1703 introduces many new Configuration Service Providers (CSPs) that provide new capabilities for managing Windows 10 devices using MDM or provisioning packs. Among other things, these CSPs allow you to configure several hundred optimal Group Policy settings through MDM. See CSP Policies - ADMX Enabled Policies.

Below are some more new CSPs:

  • Mobile app management support for Windows 10

Mobile Application Management (MAM) for Windows is a lightweight solution for managing organizational data access and security on personal devices. MAM support is built into Windows on top of Windows Information Protection (WIP) starting with Windows 10 version 1703.

For more information, see Server-Side Implementations of Mobile App Control Support in Windows.

    Diagnosis of MDM

Windows 10 version 1703 further improves diagnostic capabilities to help manage modern mobile devices. With automatic logging for mobile devices, Windows automatically collects logs when errors are detected in MDM, so you no longer need to continuously log on memory-constrained devices. Additionally, Microsoft Message Analyzer has been added to help support technicians quickly identify the root cause of problems without requiring additional cost or time.

    Application Virtualization (App-V) for Windows

In previous versions of Microsoft Application Virtualization Sequencer (App-V Sequencer), you had to manually create virtualization environments. Windows 10 version 1703 introduces two new PowerShell cmdlets, New-AppVSequencerVM and Connect-AppvSequencerVM, that let you automatically create a virtualization environment, including provisioning a virtual machine. Additionally, with the new App-V Sequencer, you can virtualize and update multiple applications at once by automatically saving settings in an App-V Project Template (APPVT). You can also automatically remove unpublished packages using PowerShell scripts or Group Policy settings that take effect when the device is restarted.

Using Miracast on an existing wireless or local network

In Windows 10 version 1703, Microsoft added the ability to send a Miracast stream over a local network instead of a direct wireless connection. This feature is based on the Miracast Over Infrastructure Connectivity (MS-MICE) protocol.

Miracast over infrastructure provides a number of advantages:

    • Windows automatically detects the ability to send a video stream through this path.
    • Windows only chooses this route if the connection is via Ethernet or a secure Wi-Fi network.
    • Users do not need to change the way they connect to the Miracast receiver. Uses the same user experience as a standard Miracast connection.
    • No changes are required to your current computer hardware or wireless adapter drivers.
    • The solution is well suited for older wireless equipment that is not optimized for Miracast over Wi-Fi Direct.
    • The existing connection is used, which reduces the time required for connection and ensures stable flow.

    Principle of operation

The user attempts to connect to the Miracast receiver as before. After populating the list of Miracast receivers, Windows 10 determines that the receiver supports infrastructure connectivity. When a user selects a Miracast receiver, Windows 10 tries to resolve the device's hostname through standard DNS as well as multicast DNS (mDNS). If the name is not resolved through one of the DNS methods, Windows 10 falls back to establishing a Miracast session using a standard Wi-Fi Direct connection.

    Enabling Miracast by infrastructure

If you have a device updated to Windows 10 version 1703, this feature is already available to you. To take advantage of it in your environment, you must ensure that the following is true in your deployment:

    • Your device (computer, phone, or Surface Hub) runs Windows 10 version 1703.
    • A Windows PC or Surface Hub can act as receiver Miracast on infrastructure. A Windows computer or phone can act as source Miracast on infrastructure.
      • As a Miracast receiver, your computer or Surface Hub must be connected to your corporate network via Ethernet or a secure Wi-Fi network (for example, using WPA2-Enterprise or WPA2-PSK). When the Surface Hub is connected to an open Wi-Fi network, Miracast is automatically disabled by the infrastructure.
      • As a Miracast source, your computer or phone must be connected to the same enterprise network via Ethernet or a secure Wi-Fi network.
    • The DNS host name (device name) of the device must be resolvable by your DNS servers. This can be achieved by either allowing your device to register automatically via Dynamic DNS, or by manually creating an A or AAAA record for the device's hostname.
    • Windows 10 computers must be connected to the same enterprise network via Ethernet or a secure Wi-Fi network.

Please note that infrastructure Miracast is not a replacement for standard Miracast. This is an additional functionality that benefits users connected to the corporate network. Users who are guests in a specific location and do not have access to the corporate network will still connect using the Wi-Fi Direct connection method.

Hello friends, today I want to say a few words about how to update to the final version of Windows 10, which is called the Creators Update, version 1703. It is known that the update will only be available on April 11 through the Update Center, but in order not to wait, you can use special tools from Microsoft.

What to do to update toCreators Update ?

It’s simple, so as not to wait for April 11, you can download the “Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant” utility, or the Media Creation Tool, which allows you to update your computer to the latest version and create a bootable USB flash drive with Windows. After the update, all important data and programs will be saved, and the desktop icons will remain in the same place.

You can download both utilities from this site (Microsoft official site). First, I’ll show you what it looks like in the Update Assistant (Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant). Download the program and run it. It will check for updates for your OS and if there are any, it will offer to update the system to the final version. This will allow you to update your computer to the Creators Update. The update can be carried out on computers starting with Windows 7, and the system must be activated and not corporate.

I advise you to read:

How do I update to the Creators Update using the Media Creation Tool?

The Media Creation Tool update tool can be downloaded from here. Once you launch it, you will be asked to choose one of two options - update your PC now, or create installation media. Choose what you want, but I would use the first option.

If you chose the second option - creating installation media on a USB flash drive or another device, then next you need to select the language, system edition and architecture. Then you can save the image as an ISO file or directly write it to a USB flash drive. Downloading is done via the Internet.

What's new in the Creators Update?

As always, I’m late with the review; many of you probably already know about the new features of the final update. For those who don't know, I'll tell you.

The new version of Windows 10 adds a new version of Paint that has an updated interface and the ability to create 3D objects. Added features for gamers: system optimization to increase performance in games, game mode, integration with the Beam service, creating broadcasts using standard tools, and no need to download third-party software.

It continues to develop and has also received several interesting innovations. In particular, you can put open tabs aside and then return to them again. Added automatic blue filter. In addition to these improvements, Night Color and " " features have been added to the notification center.

The “Applications” and “Games” sections have been added to the “Windows Settings” window. Some sections have been updated and new functions have been added, I think you yourself will figure out what and how.

Since a new update has been released and my PC has been updated, I will carefully examine the latest update and write a couple of articles about the new functionality.

What do you think about the Creators Update?
