Apple founder Steve Jobs has died in the United States. What year did the iPhone come out...: a review of all iPhones by year

On January 9, 2007, at the MacWorld Expo international conference, iPhone 1 was introduced to the world. Then no one could even imagine that starting from this date the world would split into two camps: iPhone fans and ardent opponents of Apple technology.

Today's article is about the first generation iPhone. We will tell you how the idea to create a universal smartphone came about, under what conditions the development was carried out and what problems Apple had to face along the way. Then we'll look at the specs and key features of the iPhone 1, as well as the shortcomings of Apple's first phone.

Birth of an idea and development

The history of the iPhone is directly related to the release of the iPod. Few people know that the first iPhone had two ancestors. The first was codenamed "Purple 1". The second received the far from flattering “failure of the year” award. But Steve Jobs decided that he would definitely create a device that would combine a phone, a computer and a player.

Later, Steve Jobs talked about how the first iPhone appeared. At the beginning of 2005, I was racking my brains over the development of a tablet. He was haunted by the idea that it was possible to rid a laptop of a physical keyboard and type on a virtual one - directly on the glass multi-touch display. The work began to boil and six months later Jobs was shown a prototype of a touch display, the engineers applied inertial scrolling and... the puzzle came together. Steve was already drawing himself a model of the future device - not a tablet, but a phone.

The development of the iPhone 1 was carried out in strict secrecy. Each department was assigned to develop certain details and employees of different departments were not allowed to communicate with each other. In total, more than 200 employees were involved in the development and design phase. Only at the beginning of 2014 did we receive photographs of the office where the development of the first smartphone from Apple was carried out:

Software developers also faced a difficult task - to turn the desktop Mac OS into a portable one - iOS. This task fell on the shoulders of engineer Greg Christie:

Steve came into our office and gave us two weeks to bring him a model of the future OS. Otherwise, the task would have been assigned to another team.

Due to the workload of specialists, the release of the new OS Leopard was delayed for six months, but it was worth it - iOS has become the main operating system for all Apple portable devices. Its flexibility and extensive programmability provided a true foundation not only for future generations of iPhone, but also for the iPad line of tablets.

Negotiations with the American cellular network operator Cingular were also carried out under the heading “secret” - Apple employees registered under the name of another company. Moreover, they started long before the creation of the first iPhone prototypes - Jobs conducted masterful preparation and kept in touch with partners for several years. The wait was worth it - Cingular was soon renamed AT&T, which still leads the list of carriers tied to the iPhone. The idea of reducing the cost of a smartphone by using the services of a specific network operator also belonged to Steve.

Another difficulty arose with the name of the future branded smartphone from Apple. After the release of the iPod, the company's marketing department was finally convinced that continuing the line of “i” gadgets was the true path of the Apple corporation. But the name “iPhone” was already registered with Cisco Systems. Steve took a risk and released the smartphone anyway under the name that was intended. Of course, the lawsuit was not long in coming. But already in February 2007, a settlement agreement was signed under which the companies could use the trade name “iPhone” together. The terms of the agreement were not disclosed by the parties and have long been buried in the company archives.

The first iPhone was finally created and Steve kept his promise. A PDA, a telephone and an mp3 player have merged into one device. Sales started on June 29, 2007. The smartphone was released with two memory sizes: 4 and 8 GB. The minimum price was $500, the model with increased memory already cost $600. The excitement created around the new smartphone took root - queues began to form in stores three days before the official start of sales. The company's management, fearing a repeat of the situation with the PlayStation 3, hired free police officers to guard stores at night.

Specifications

What was special about the first generation iPhone? Firstly, voicemail, which took a lot of time and money to develop.

Compared to its competitors, the first iPhone had respectable dimensions: 115.5-61-11.6 mm. But the unusual dimensions appealed to users - the rounded edges and thin body did their job. The first iPhone was designed as a device that “can be tucked into a jeans pocket,” and indeed its dimensions allowed the phone to be hidden in the average pocket. But users preferred to carry the new product in bags, briefcases and backpacks, which generated a wave of demand for protective cases for iPhone.

The back panel was made of matte silver plastic. Below there is a small black rubberized protection.

The iPhone marked the beginning of devices with an exit SIM card tray (previously, most phones hid the SIM card under the battery behind the back cover). The second Apple symbol was the “home” button - in the first model it was responsible for exiting applications and putting the smartphone into standby mode.

According to official data, the iPhone battery showed the following data: standby time - 250 hours, 24 hours - listening to music, 8 hours - talk time, 7 hours watching videos and 6 hours of Internet surfing.

The smartphone had 25 ringtones preinstalled, which exceeded the standard 10-12 on other smartphone models. The 2 MP camera was enough to take photos with a resolution of 1600x1200 pixels; the screen orientation was determined automatically thanks to the built-in sensors.

The default iPhone screen had 16 application icons:

  • phone (in addition to the call function, here you can find call statistics and a phone book for 50 names)
  • mail
  • safari (browser)
  • ipod (music player)
  • calendar (the calendar has the secondary function of a diary and has 3 display options: list of events, months and days)
  • clock (contains 4 tabs: world time, alarm, stopwatch and timer)
  • calculator
  • photo
  • camera
  • YouTube
  • notes
  • stock
  • weather
  • cards
  • settings

The main disadvantages of the first generation iPhone were the lack of support for 3G, MMS and a low level of security. Moreover, due to the last factor, iPhone smartphones were unable to occupy a niche in the corporate segment and lost leadership to BlackBerry.

Conclusions: The first generation iPhone ushered in a new era of smartphones and portable communicators. Of course, it had its drawbacks, but the popularity of Apple's first smartphone proved that they were insignificant for users. Steve Jobs did the impossible - he connected all the portable devices that people had to carry separately. iPhone 1 users could make calls, exchange SMS and email messages, surf the Internet, watch movies, listen to their favorite music, take photos and play mobile games. In general, everything that modern smartphones are capable of. Surprisingly, despite being tied to a foreign operator, the iPhone quickly found fans in Russia and remains popular to this day.

Where to buy iPhone 1?

The iPhone 1 has long been a rarity, especially in its original, unopened box. Some even consider its purchase as an element of investment - over the years the price will increase. The main trading platform is eBay. Thousands of options are presented, prices vary from several hundred rubles to tens of thousands, depending on the condition of the lot and the expectations of the seller.

Phones. Mobile phones have been improved and developed since their inception until today. They became lighter, smaller, more functional. They are firmly entrenched in our lives, helping us with ordinary tasks on weekdays. We have seen the ups and downs of many mobile device companies. Many people remember Nokia and its elegant and sophisticated phones, Motorola and their functional RAZR flip phones. But none of these companies were able to make such a revolution in the mobile device market as Apple did with its phone, which was succinctly called iPhone. But not everything was so simple; on the way to creating a mobile phone from Apple, there were many problems and obstacles to achieving the goal...

Where it all started

In 2005, iPod sales reached a staggering 20 million. The portable player has taken an important role in the digital device market, securing the title of the best music player. But at Apple, led by Steve Jobs, there were already reasonable opinions that the success of the iPod would be overshadowed by mobile phones. If every company decides to build a music player into their phone, then the need for an iPod will simply disappear. Jobs was very unhappy with this situation.

In those days, Apple worked closely with Motorola. After lengthy negotiations, both parties decided to jointly create a mobile device. Motorola at that time produced and released the RAZR line of mobile phones, which subsequently evolved into ROKR in collaboration with Apple. ROKR was closely integrated with the iPod, but as you might have guessed, it was not successful upon release. The phone was functionally limited and did not allow more than a hundred songs to be downloaded to the phone. It lacked the minimalism and elegance that characterized the iPod.

This state of affairs did not suit Apple. Therefore, within the company, a team of designers and engineers began to develop their own phone. Steve and his team spent many hours at meetings discussing their own phones and pointing out their shortcomings. They were heavy, thick, and in settings the devil would break a leg. Apple's phone was supposed to be thinner, lighter and more convenient. This was the main motivation for Steve's team.

Development of the first iPhone

Many people did not know that the company was simultaneously developing a tablet computer. At a certain point, the development of the phone and tablet stopped, so the iPhone took many ideas from the iPad. But many in the company did not appreciate the idea of creating a mobile phone with a touch screen. So the design team split into two groups working on different iPhone prototypes, codenamed P1 and P2. The P1 was a reimagining of the iPod, a phone with a Click Wheel, and the P2 was a touchscreen variant. After some time, the first group, led by Tony Fadell, admitted that the wheel option was very inconvenient from entering a phone number to typing a text message. After lengthy discussions, Steve's team decided to stick with the touchscreen option. All that's left is to make it work.

In early 2005, Apple acquired the small company FingerWorks, after which all of its patents for multi-touch technologies and subsequent patents were transferred to the Apple name. Also, after Jony Ive showed Steve Jobs multi-touch technology, which allows you to control computers using a touch surface, Jobs used this technology to create the iPhone. “This is the future,” Steve said. The whole team really liked the idea of scrolling through text as if it were something tangible and enlarging the text with two fingers. Technologically, the iPhone was almost ready, but some questions remained regarding the design of the phone.

The front of the phone was planned to be made of plastic, but Steve decided to insist that the screen should be made of glass, arguing that it would make the phone look more elegant. All that remained was to find strong and scratch-resistant glass. This was found. John Seely Brown, a friend of Jobs, advised him to contact Corning, which was producing high-strength gorilla glass, but due to low demand for the product it was forced to close production. After several calls, Steve Jobs agreed on a partnership with Corning.

After some time, Jobs' team begins to re-design the iPhone. Everyone on the team unanimously agreed that the current design looked terrible. The new version assumed that only the screen and the Home button would remain on the front side, and there would be metal rims on the sides connecting the front and back sides. It was a long road to the iPhone design we saw at the presentation.

At the MacWorld presentation in early 2007, Steve Jobs took the stage and announced that Apple intended to introduce three revolutionary products to the world. iPod with a widescreen touch display, a revolutionary mobile device and a device for comfortable and convenient Internet use. Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone to the public. Three revolutionary products in one device.

iPhone 2G went on sale in the US in June 2007 and received many glowing reviews. There was also criticism regarding the weak signal and lack of ability to connect to the 3G network; many Microsoft antagonists predicted the failure of the Apple phone due to its high cost of $500.

The iPhone 2G was just the beginning of a line of devices. But it plays an important role in shaping the device market. Many of you have noticed how quickly the mobile device market has changed since the release of the first iPhone. Changing the shape of factors, the presence of touch screens. Regardless of the competition, the iPhone has been and remains one of the leading smartphones in the world.

If you have not found an answer to your question or something has not worked out for you, and there is no suitable solution in the comments below, ask a question through our

Hi all! A new iPhone model comes out every year and Apple strictly adheres to this rule. However, “once a year” is too vague a wording, don’t you think? Therefore, I propose today to find out the exact release date of absolutely all existing iPhone models. To collect, so to speak, all these numbers in one place.

For what? Firstly, it is always interesting to track how much time passes from the moment of presentation to the start of sales in Russia and the world. Secondly, such a cheat sheet can be useful to many (for me, as the author of a blog about Apple, certainly :)). Thirdly, why not? The content, in my opinion, is useful - let it be. Go!

For a clearer understanding, all information is presented in the table. A little explanation:

  • Start date of sales in the world - by “world” we mean the countries of the so-called “first wave” (USA, European countries, etc.)
  • The start date of sales in Russia is the beginning of sales of certified (PCT) iPhones.
  • The iPhone 2G was not “legally” sold in Russia, and the first official iPhone in the Russian Federation was the 3G model (a little more about this).

As we can see, the increase in Apple’s loyalty to our country is very clearly visible. The timing of the appearance of gadgets in Russia, compared to the global start of sales, decreased every year. And by the time the “six” came out, they reached their apogee. The difference was only a week!

For comparison, the official iPhone 3GS appeared in Russia almost 9 months later! At this time the whole world was already waiting for the “four” :)

And my opinion is that everything was heading towards Russia being included this year in the list of those countries where Apple devices appear first. However, this did not happen and we all know why:

  • Dollar instability.
  • Great prices.
  • Low purchasing activity.

Well, let's wait and see and perhaps, specifically for the iPhone 7 model, a row with two identical numbers in the last two columns will be added to the table at the top :)

Updated! Well, with regards to the iPhone 7, miracles certainly didn’t happen, but Russia still got into the “second wave” of sales. In the Russian Federation, a brand new smartphone from Apple will appear only a week later than in the “first wave” countries. And this is very good! After all, the point is that starting with the iPhone 7S, our country should be among those who will receive it first.

Updated 2! Preliminary data (which are known immediately after the presentation) on the release of iPhone 8 and iPhone X have been added to the table. At the moment, opinions differ only about the G8 - will Russia be among the countries of the “first wave”? Or will iPhone 8 sales in the Russian Federation start a week later than throughout the world? Let's wait for more accurate information... We have waited. Still a week late. But Russia was included in the “first wave” of iPhone X sales - this is very cool!

Today, the iPhone is the best-selling mobile phone in the world. They probably know about it in most countries, and what is most important, they don’t just talk about the phone, but they actually want to buy it. People even equate iPhone owners with people who have achieved success in life. It is believed that anyone who can afford such an expensive device has some kind of special status. Of course, such popularity and high price allow Apple, the company that developed the iPhone, to make billions in profits. And by constantly updating versions of this mobile device and releasing new generations, developers also manage to receive a constant income. This result was achieved by the creator of the iPhone, Steve Jobs.

Legendary Jobs

The figure is quite famous in the world and is on a par with such an IT market guru as Bill Gates. In essence, Jobs did the same as Gates - he founded the world's largest company focused on the production of electronic devices, including portable ones: smartphones and tablets. It’s not for nothing that films were made about them and gained popularity. The creator of the iPhone became even more famous after his death in 2011. Then a photo of Jobs was placed on the main page of the Apple website, with the years of his life signed (Steve was born in 1955).

Where did the iPhone start?

Of course, the path from the idea of creating a new mobile device to billions in sales turned out to be quite long and difficult. Apple collected it back in the 80s of the last century. It all started, as in the case of Microsoft, with the assembly of electronics in the garage. Much has been written about how everything really happened: there is a version that Bill Gates stole Jobs’ ideas, applying them in his own developments. Be that as it may, now we are not talking about this, but about another direction - the smartphone.

The creator of the iPhone only had an idea of what the phone should ultimately turn out to be. It was back in 1999, and Jobs failed to do anything other than theoretical developments. Only 6 years later, in 2005, he, leading 200 engineers, worked on the device together with the Motorola division. At that time the phone was called Purple-1, but it could not please the public with anything special (the gadget contained 2 functions - a player and a communication device), and they decided to postpone its presentation, as well as its release. The project, to put it simply, was abandoned. True, a year later the creator of the iPhone was working on Purple-2, but they did not dare to present it. They expected something really worthwhile from Jobs, because back in 1997 he returned to the company after being fired and could not help but please his employees. Real inspiration came to him only in 2007.

Help AT&T sell iPhone

To realize his idea, the creator of the iPhone enlisted the support of the largest mobile operator in the United States at that time - AT&T. This was a new practice in relations between phone manufacturers and operators, since previously the latter dictated their terms, in fact, placing orders for mobile devices. In this situation, it was the other way around: AT&T CEO Stan Sigman believed in Jobs's idea and that it could work due to its originality, and the operator ultimately agreed to offer the phones under a contract that the buyer had to enter into. iPhones were offered in addition to communication services.

iPhone presentation - a sensation on the mobile market

There are also many stories about how the first device was presented and how the creator of the iPhone, whose name is known to millions, held the event. There is a version according to which Jobs came out to the presentation, announcing that his company had finally come up with a real smartphone, which was very immodest. In addition, there are rumors that the first device with which the creator of the iPhone was supposed to make a call and take a photo began, for unknown reasons, to display information incorrectly on the display, which is why the entire presentation was in jeopardy. Nevertheless, somehow Jobs managed to hold the event in such a way that in total more than 270 thousand copies of the iPhone were sold. The creator of this phone, therefore, with the help of an original idea, perseverance, 10 years of work and his own qualities as a negotiator, was able to build an entire empire within just one division of Apple.

to date

Today, of course, there seems to be nothing surprising about the success of Apple, and no one doubts its further development. By releasing new devices, the corporation constantly improves them, due to which it still keeps its millions of fans hooked. It is amazing that even cheaper mobile devices on other operating systems cannot compare in terms of sales with Apple ones. This is a mystery of its own, because the laws of the market state that cheaper goods are more in demand. As the experience of the creator of the iPhone shows, this is not so.

The new head of Apple

Jobs headed Apple for a long time, after which a new manager, Tim Cook, took his place. This is a very experienced manager who has also spent many years in the company. Experts, after he took up his post, debated for a long time over how the newcomer would show himself in the place of Jobs’ real guru. Someone predicted the collapse of the company, linking its success solely with the figure of Steve. However, as time has shown and the presentations of several new models of iPhones, iPads, iPods and even iWatch watches, Cook is able to strengthen Apple’s position in the market.

Further development of the company

You know the name of the creator of the iPhone - the legendary man who realized his brilliant idea and spread it around the world. It is difficult to say in which direction Apple will move next. There is an expression: “The higher you fly, the more painful it is to fall.” It can be confidently applied to a company that produces Apple products.

On the one hand, now sales of tablet computers and players are indeed breaking records, and this has been happening for several years now. However, in fact, now the management of the concern is faced with the task of not letting down those people who have placed their hopes in the brand and, most importantly, to justify the fame that has developed around the name of Steve Jobs. Now all the company needs to work on is a significant increase in market influence and growth in device sales.

And this is very difficult to do, given the competition. If earlier the same Samsung could offer much lower quality phones, now its products are not so far behind Apple. In addition, another threat has emerged for the American concern from the east - Chinese manufacturers. Companies such as Huawei and Xiaomi are also trying to keep up in terms of quality, significantly lowering the price of products. It is not surprising that their market share is growing, pushing Apple forward.

Time will tell what electronics developers with the Apple logo will come up with. Now there are all kinds of rumors about this, even as unlikely as the idea of releasing iPhones with. Whether it’s true or not, we’ll see.

Hi all! We continue to learn interesting facts and, following this, we will find out when these same smartphones began to appear in the Russian Federation. Today everything is simple - worldwide sales start and... by overpaying two or three prices you can become the owner of a new product on the same day (plus or minus 24 hours - sometimes you need to wait until the iPhone “flies” from another country).

Or after a short period of time (about a month), you can already run to the store for an official and certified iPhone at a much more pleasant price. Why is a month a short period of time? Because things weren't like that before. And people in Russia waited for the first iPhone, imported in compliance with all laws and formalities, for a very long time...

How many? Let's figure it out now. Go!:)

Date of appearance of the first unofficial iPhone in Russia

We are, of course, talking about the iPhone 2G. The very first “Apple” phone, presented at the MacWorld Expo conference on January 9, 2007 and released for sale on June 29, 2007, was not formally delivered to Russia, initially did not have support for Russian localization and was blocked by an American telecom operator.

But this does not mean that no one in our country owned it at that moment. Still, the device turned out to be quite iconic, and many people wanted to own the new product, especially since they later learned to bypass all these restrictions (blocking and other inconveniences).

Of course, no one knows for sure when the first iPhone crossed the border of the Russian Federation, but we can note for ourselves that iPhones appeared in Russia at the end of June and beginning of July 2007, almost simultaneously with the start of global sales. Of course, we are talking about so-called “gray” or unofficial phones.

First official iPhone deliveries to Russia

The iPhone 3G, which became the first officially sold Apple smartphone in the Russian Federation, was presented to the world on June 10, 2008 and released for sale a month later (July 11) in 22 countries at once. Of course, Russia was not among them.

Which is understandable, at that time our market was not a priority for Apple. And only in the fall of the same year, a Russian buyer was able to buy the first “legal” iPhone in the Russian Federation. It appeared and went on sale on the night of October 2-3, 2008. This was truly a landmark event; implementation was launched simultaneously by Svyaznoy and MTS. Later, other mobile electronics retail chains joined them.

Let's summarize - these two iOS devices became pioneers in our country:

  • iPhone 2G – unofficial or so-called “gray” devices were sold. Date of appearance in the Russian Federation - summer 2007.
  • iPhone 3G is the first certified iPhone that began to be sold on the Russian market, with other useful things. This happened at the end of 2008.

By the way, with the release of each new smartphone from Apple, the time intervals between them began to shorten!

P.S. Some kind of nostalgia just washed over me... In my opinion, the first iPhones were very cool. Do you think the same? Like and click on the social media buttons!
