How to make a backup?

However, it should be noted that in this case, applications downloaded from Google and installed on the gadget will not be recreated. To avoid this situation, you need to use special applications that make it possible to backup literally the entire media. Using a computer

It should be noted that the easiest way to create a general backup of your own device is to backup your Android via a computer. This is very important, because we live in a time of technological development, and mobile devices have become an integral part of it; they contain a lot of important data that needs to be saved.

There are a lot of backup options via a computer. For example, you can restore via Google. Almost any Android device can interact with a working Google account. Then it’s simple: find the necessary settings in the menu (category “Personal”), click the “Backup and Restore” command.

You just need to remember to check that all the boxes are ticked. If the gadget does not yet have the required entry, activate the “Backup Account” button, press it, and enter information from a previously existing entry.

Flashtool

How to backup Android firmware using Flashtool? There are simple instructions consisting of several points:

  1. First you need to turn off the media itself. Then we activate the drivers, which can be found in the archive of basic programs. Open and find the scatter file. When it is not loaded, you can download it from any other media with a similar processor. Select with a tick only the first line of Preloader. And all screenshots in the gadget are clickable.
  2. Open the Memory Test section. Select only one line RAM Test.
  3. Activate the Start key and connect the non-working media to the computer, after which Flashtool will automatically switch the memory test to operating mode.
  4. We copy the information received from the memory test and transfer it to a notepad. Zero partitions are not needed (they are highlighted with a line in the screenshot).
  5. Switch to the ReadBack section and activate the Add button. Double-click on the highlighted line with your computer mouse. We write any file name (to avoid confusion, EMMC_USER is better) and the location where the memory block will be located.
  6. In the window on the screen we write three parameters, according to the data already found (see point 5).
  7. Find and activate with the Ok key. After that, press the Read Back key and activate the turned off gadget.
  8. As a result, separate blocks of flash memory will appear in the media, the largest of which is EMMC_USER (user region), several gigabytes in size depending on the brand of the media. To guarantee, the information can be flashed into the gadget using the SP Flash Tool - Write Memory program. The Android backup via Flashtool is completely ready. Restore to general settings

Backing up Android without root rights is not a big problem. "Android" has a basic function to get a general backup of an Android gadget without root rights, as well as the technical capabilities to completely restore it. The maximum that is needed for this operation is a working computer and media running Android 4.0.

In addition, you can recreate and update the backup copy of your existing Android media using the Titanium Backup program. This is probably one of the most effective solutions for backup, but for this you need root rights.

Other options

It is much easier to use ADB utilities to create and restore a backup copy. This computer program for Android backup is available in the Google Android SDK, which is easy to download for free.

Let's start by activating the Java Development Kit (if not activated), since the Android SDK requires it. Download and activate the 32-bit Java Development Kit (Android SDK requires a 32-bit version, even when the gadget is running a 64-bit version of Windows).

You can then copy and activate Android. When the SDK responds that it is unable to detect Java, then perhaps you installed the 64-bit version, then install the 32-bit version.

Next is the next stage of backing up the Android firmware. Once you have resolved all the issues and successfully installed the SDK, activate the Android SDK Manager from the menu on the Start screen. Check the Android SDK Platform-tools line and install to unpack the working options package for the platform that has ADB. When an error is found, you need to activate SDK Manager with administrator rights (touch the SDK Manager image on the screen in the Start menu and stop on the line “Run as administrator”).

Don't forget to enable USB setup on your own device. This can be dealt with using the developer toolbar in the basic Android settings.

Then connect your computer and your gadget using a USB cable. By this time, you need to activate the drivers for your gadget; as a rule, they can be found on the website of the smartphone manufacturer. As a rule, the computer installs the drivers itself. For example, you can activate Google USB Driver using Android SDK Manager, and perhaps you can revive your gadget.

When working on a backup of the Android firmware, you need to remember that the directory in which the Android SDK is located is shown at the very top of the Android SDK Manager computer window, not far from the SDK Path line.

You need to locate the adb.exe file in the platform-tools section. As a rule, it is located at C:\Users\NAME\AppData\Local\Android\Android-sdk\platform-tools.

Look into this folder and, holding down the Shift key, click on the right button of the computer mouse. In the window that appears in the context menu, click on the line “Open command window”. And in order to understand whether there is an adb connection with your gadget, run the adb devices command.

The name of your gadget should appear in the list of existing devices. If it is not there, the driver was probably installed incorrectly.

Using ADB

What a backup is on Android using adb commands can only be understood after completing the installation work. For a shared backup, run this command: adb backup -apk -shared -all -f C:\Users\NAME\backup.ab.

This action creates a backup copy of all existing applications and data on the SD card to the file C:\Users\NAME\backup.ab on a running computer. Write NAME in the line for the username of your device or select another space.

When you activate the command on your phone, you need to record the appearance of the backup copy. You can further protect your backup with a strong password.

To recreate the necessary backup, you need to run the following command: adb restore C:\Users\NAME\backup.ab.

Synchronization with cloud services

Android includes a built-in feature to create a full backup of your Android phone without root, as well as a tool to restore it. All you need is a computer and a device running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).

You can also create and restore a backup of your Android device using the Titanium Backup utility. Titanium Backup is perhaps one of the best backup solutions, but it requires root access.

Installing the Android SDK

To create and restore a backup, we will use ADB (Android Debug Bridge) commands. This utility is included in the Google Android SDK, which you can download for free.

First, you need to install the Java Development Kit (if not installed), since the Android SDK requires it. Download and install the 32-bit version of the Java Development Kit (Android SDK requires the 32-bit version even if you have a 64-bit version of Windows).

Next, download and install the Android SDK. If the SDK says it can't find Java, then you may have installed a 64-bit version, in which case install the 32-bit version.

After you have successfully installed the SDK, launch Android SDK Manager from the Start menu. Check the box next to Android SDK Platform-tools and click the install button to install the platform tools package that contains ADB. If you see an error, run SDK Manager as Administrator (click on the SDK Manager icon in the Start menu and select “Run as Administrator”).

Preparing the device

You must enable USB debugging on your device. You can do this from the developer tools in Android settings.

Now connect your PC and your device using a USB cable. You must have drivers installed for your smartphone; usually they can be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website. Install Google USB Driver via Android SDK Manager (Extras subfolder), it might work.

ADB check

Remember the path where Android SDK is installed. It appears at the very top of the Android SDK Manager window next to SDK Path.

You need to find the adb.exe file in the platform-tools folder. It is usually located at C:\Users\NAME\AppData\Local\Android\Android-sdk\platform-tools.

Go to this folder and, holding down the Shift button, right-click on an empty space, select “Open command window” in the context menu that opens. To check the adb connection to your device, run the adb devices command.

Your device should appear in the list. If it is not there, then the driver is installed incorrectly.

Now you can use adb commands to create a backup copy of your device files. For a full backup, run the following command:
adb backup -apk -shared -all -f C:\Users\NAME\backup.ab
The command will create a backup copy of all installed applications (apk files) and data on the SD card to the C:\Users\NAME\backup.ab file on your computer. Replace NAME in the command with your computer's username or specify a different location.

When you run the command on your phone, you must confirm the creation of the backup. You can also protect your backup with a password.

Depending on the amount of data, the process may take some time.

Restoring a backup

To restore a backup, you need to run the following command:
adb restore C:\Users\NAME\backup.ab
A confirmation message appears indicating that the backup will replace all data on the device. If a password is set for the backup, you will need to enter it.

CWM

ClockworkMod is an older program that has less functionality compared to TWRP. You can replace the stock recovery with it (if it is not already installed as the main one) using the ROM Manager utility in the “Setup recovery” section. One of the features of CWM is the control of only “hard” buttons, i.e., volume control and power buttons, which all Android phones and tablets have.

Algorithm for creating a backup using CWM:

  1. The phone charge should be at least 60%, and preferably 100%.
  2. Free up 500 MB or more of free space.
  3. Turn off, wait about a minute.
  4. Press and hold the power button and “-” or “+”, depending on the phone model.
  5. When the upside-down Android icon appears, briefly press the power button and the opposite volume control button to go to the menu.
  6. In the menu that appears, use the “-” or “+” buttons to select the “backup and restore” section, and confirm the selection with the power button
  7. In the next menu, select and click “Backup” in the same way
  8. All! Within 10–15 minutes, a backup of the firmware and all files will be created on your phone.

How to make a backup on Android without applications? Use the same algorithm, since often installed recoveries have similar menus, as well as control methods. In this case, you do not have to get root access.

TWRP

TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) is a more advanced utility for the Android system that allows you to use the touchpad and has an almost complete set of functions for working with file storage, software and the operating system. For example, you can back up only selected files. TWRP has a more convenient menu compared to CWM.

To install TWRP, you will need one of the special applications, such as GooManager. In the program menu you need to select “Install OpenRecovery Script”. Then, using the same program, click “Reboot Recovery” and get to the TWRP menu.

IMPORTANT. It is worth noting that the Android device must also have a high battery level and free storage space.

Click “Backup” and select the required partitions. We swipe across the part of the screen highlighted at the bottom, and the program begins creating a copy for the Android system. After a few minutes, click “Reboot system”. The copy is ready.

Using a PC

Obtaining root access, and at the same time mastering various applications, can be difficult for the user, while making a backup of Android firmware on a computer will be much easier for someone than with TWRP. Moreover, you don’t have to download any additional applications for the device.

All you need for this:

  1. Enabled USB debugging on the Android device (you can do this from the settings).
  2. Install ADB RUN for your computer, download it for free.
  3. PC drivers, which are often installed automatically, and a USB cable.

Algorithm of actions:

  1. We connect the phone to the computer and launch the ADB program.
  2. Select Backup in the window that opens.
  3. Next, select the first item in the new menu.
  4. On your Android device, click “Back up data.” You are also prompted to create a password, but this action is optional.

A copy has been created for you to use if necessary!

Click on the New Backup button. The program will prompt us to save applications and media or data. First, let's save applications and media. We are given a choice of where to save our backup: on a flash drive, online or on a computer. In order not to bother, we’ll choose a flash drive. Now we just have to wait a little.

My Backup after a while shows a window in which it provides a list of what we need to save (applications, photos, music). Select the checkboxes that we need and click OK. Specify your backup name, or leave it as default, and click OK.

Another small window will appear in which you will be asked what to save (apk + data, data or just apk). Choose apk + data, otherwise what's the point of making this backup at all? Now we wait for the program to save all the data. How long this will take depends on how many applications you have installed.

Now let's save the data. We return to the main program window, click on New Backup again, and select “Data”. Let’s choose exactly this type of saving – to a flash drive. After that, in a new window, check the boxes for contacts, sms, call log, in general, everything you need.

In a new window, write the backup name or leave the default one, click OK, and wait for the operation to complete.

There are other programs for backing up the Android system, for example, Nandroid manager, Helium, Titanium BackUp. They all roughly operate according to the same scenario, and have only small differences, so as an example, we have analyzed the simplest program that does not require root rights.

To restore your data later, go to My Backups. Select what you need to restore, where from, and the program will find all saved copies. Select the one you need and restore.

Let's look at how to make a backup of an Android phone (namely applications with a cache) via Titanium Backup. This app is said to be considered the best among its competitors. It does not backup the system, but only phone applications, and also saves a copy of the phone book, SMS and, then, allows you to restore them.

Titanium will be extremely useful if you want to reinstall the phone's firmware, but you don't want to reinstall everything you had before.

First you need to download this app from the link from Play Store.

Next, take care of the memory in your phone. When you make copies of applications and their cache, you will need a place to save them. Both a memory card and the phone itself are suitable for this. Allocate at least 1GB for this, although it all depends on how much data you'll be backing up.

So, you have downloaded and installed the application with superuser rights. It can backup one application of your choice, or all of them - with settings, parameters, and so on.

Let's say you want to back up one application (or several, but not all). In Titanium, open the Backups tab. You'll be shown a list of apps installed on your phone or tablet, and you'll see icons next to each app. If there is an exclamation mark next to an application, this means that this application does not yet have a backup copy. And then there will be a sign for a phone or flash drive. If there is a phone icon next to an application, then this application is installed on the phone itself. And if it’s a flash drive, then it’s on a flash drive.

Select the application you want to copy, click on it, a menu will appear. Clicking the Save button creates a backup copy of this application. Freezing stops the application. Delete and Destroy data, respectively, deletes the application itself, but the data is saved, or deletes the data of this application; if you use both buttons, both the application and all its data will disappear.

If you need to create copies of all applications on your Android phone, then you should consider a Titanium feature such as group actions.

From the main menu you can find this item and open it. This time we are not asked to work with each application separately, but instead we can choose to operate on all applications at once.

Let's consider what we are offered as operations on applications and their data.

— Make r.k. of all user software - this means that absolutely all applications from the phone, as well as their data, will be saved.

— Make r.k. all system data - this time we are asked to work on creating copies of data from system services and applications (not the applications themselves, but their data).

— Make r.k. all user software and system data - let’s combine the first two points and get what this point does.

— Make new r.k. – simply makes new backups, even if there are already old ones (let there be several copies, just in case).

— Remove old r.k. – if we change our minds about storing old backups, then feel free to delete them (for example, those that are more than 3 days old and are no longer relevant for us).

— Update r.k. for changed data - it simply updates, overwrites a copy of the data if we want it.

— Make r.k. for updated software - the same action as the previous one, only not a copy with data is involved, but a copy of the application. Your application has been updated and you are overwriting a copy of it.

- Backup of new applications and updates - again, take the previous 2 points, sum them up and get this point.

— Backup of new User+System applications and new versions - overwrites updated data, updated applications + also adds system applications here.

As you can see, there is a lot to play with. Choose what you need and create backup copies for your health. But how can all this be restored later?

So, we created backup copies of applications and data, flashed the phone (that is, reinstalled the Android operating system), and now we need to return all our applications and their data, of course, back. How to restore backup copies of applications and their data on an Android phone or tablet?

Group actions also have a Restore function. Let's go there and see what they offer us this time.

— Restore missing software with data – from the name we understand that the application and its data will be installed from a backup copy.

To summarize all of the above in a nutshell, to create a backup copy of all applications and data in Titanium, using Group Actions, first click the “Make r.k. all user software and system data” to create backup copies, and then click “Restore all software + all system data” to restore.

Let's look at what else Titanium Backup can do.

The application can move applications to the flash drive from the phone and back (see Batch actions). Google Play disables app updates. The Data Manipulation item will help you clear the cache and application data and reset their settings. In Recovery Mode, it creates an update.zip file, Titanium itself is saved there, you have reset the phone to factory settings and Titanium can be restored from there. You can also delete application backups on a schedule.

Backup Android system via recovery

Recovery is a kind of BIOS when compared to a computer. Simply put, this is software for flashing the phone's firmware, installing fonts, creating backups, etc.

Each phone enters recovery differently, but basically it is a combination of the lock key and the volume rocker up. Naturally, the phone must be turned off.

Okay, let's move on to the backup itself. Creating an Android backup through recovery is the surest way, because absolutely all data is saved there: from the call log to program data. You don’t have to choose what exactly to copy; recovery will create a backup of everything.

The only disadvantage of this method is that a backup of the Android system can only be done through custom recovery: CWM or TWRP. There is no such option in stock recovery.

As a rule, there is no Russian language in CWM recovery, everything is in English. Therefore, to make a backup, we need:

  • Go into recovery;
  • Use the volume rocker to get to the Backup and restore item and select it by pressing the power key;
  • Next, select Backup;
  • Confirm your actions and click Yes.

And now we wait a few minutes for the backup to be created.

To then restore the Android system using this backup, you need:

  • Go into recovery;
  • Go to Backup and restore;
  • Select Restore;
  • Select the desired package;
  • Confirm the action and select Yes.

There is a similar scenario in TWRP recovery. Even simpler. Firstly, there are touch controls (in most cases), and twrp can be found in Russian. So to create an Android backup we proceed as follows:

  • We go into recovery;
  • Select the item “Backup”;

Backup Android system to computer

The last method is to backup the Android system to a computer. To do this we need the My Phone Explorer program. Download it and install it on your computer. We enable USB debugging on the phone, connect it to the PC via a cable, and select the “Charge only” connection item in the curtain. Press the F1 button and wait until the phone connects to the computer. If you can’t connect your phone this way, try via Wi-Fi.
