Comparison of Meizu and Xiaomi smartphones. Which is better to choose? Xiaomi or Meizu: how to choose a smartphone with the perfect balance of price and quality

It is not so easy to answer the question about smartphones from two well-known Chinese brands Meizu or Xiaomi - which is better to buy. On the one hand, both companies produce many similar models of mobile equipment - both in terms of parameters, functionality, and even price.

On the other hand, different users like their own features of smartphones - some prefer the branded one, others want to get better picture quality, and others are more interested in the autonomy of the device.

Brand history

Both Chinese companies cannot be called newcomers to the mobile technology market. However, the Meizu brand became known first - in 2003, several popular mp3 players were produced under it. But already at the end of the last decade, after , the company’s management is betting on smartphones, predicting greater success for them compared to players that are beginning to become obsolete.

In 2009, the first Meitsu touchscreen phones appeared, the design and equipment of which was largely copied. Due to the too strong similarity of the Meizu M8 model, the production of the Chinese copy was discontinued a year after the company entered the smartphone market. Now Meizu does not repeat such mistakes, but its products still have a slight resemblance to iPhones.

Xiaomi began its work in 2010 as a manufacturer of MIUI software shells, which is now considered proprietary for phones of this brand. However, a year later the brand released its first smartphone Mi1 with good parameters for that time - a four-inch screen, 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of ROM and a 1930 mAh battery.

Over the next six years, the company released more than a dozen models of smartphones, (tablet phones) and three tablets, which were in good demand for their cost and performance.

Comparison of smartphone parameters in 2017

In order to compare the products of the two brands this year, it is worth deciding on the evaluation criteria. The main characteristics among them are:

  • variety of models on the market;
  • build quality and appearance;
  • performance of devices with similar parameters;
  • the quality of sound and photographs taken using these smartphones.

It also wouldn’t hurt to consider the features of the platforms that run gadgets from competing brands. It is worth remembering one of the main characteristics of modern smartphones – autonomy, which affects the time of use.

And as an additional evaluation criterion, you can analyze the availability of devices compatible with these phones and minor design differences in the form.

The lineup

Comparing the number of devices produced annually by both companies, you can see that they manage to release new products a little more often. The same brand currently has significantly more smartphone models and their modifications. Moreover, both in the segment of expensive and powerful flagships, and among those whose price does not exceed $100.

At the same time, in 2017, the picture changed - new smartphones and smartphones, sold at a competitive price and having very good parameters, increased the demand for the brand’s products. And now on the Internet you can find approximately equal numbers of offers to buy equipment from both companies.

The prices for models of the two Chinese brands are not much different from each other. The price category is also the same - both for budget devices and for flagships:

  • smartphones with 2 GB of RAM cost from $100 to $200 for Meizu and between $110–180 for Xiaomi;
  • models with 3 GB of RAM can be purchased for amounts from $150 to $350 and from $130 to $380, respectively;
  • four-gigabyte phones cost between $200–550 (Meitsu) and $180–550 (Xiaomi).

Flagship, that is, the most productive and expensive versions of both manufacturers will cost about $500–600. However, Xiaomi has many such options - Meizu has only one so far, Pro 7 Plus. Therefore, lovers of flagships with high power should pay attention to the Xiaomi brand, which offers a greater variety of characteristics (including screen diagonals).

Chinese smartphones have recently become very popular not only in China, but also in many other countries. The most popular manufacturers of Chinese smartphones are Meizu and Xiaomi. Both companies produce high-quality and modern devices, but each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages. Considering that Chinese manufacturers are good at copying well-known brands and selling them at low prices, minor shortcomings can be forgiven. Review Meizu and Xiaomi will tell you which smartphone manufacturer is better.

What are the best smartphones from Meizu?

The main advantage of smartphones is their appearance. Even the most budget devices come in a modern and stylish design. Each model has its own characteristics. It is worth noting that Meizu began to be used for their smartphones 2.5D glass almost from the very beginning, and Xiaomi I recently started using this glass for more expensive models.

Even new products from Meizu are always available for sale at a reasonable price. There is no crazy markup on such devices, and the circulation is not very limited. Anyone can easily purchase a new product from Meizu.

The manufacturer equips budget-class smartphones with good cameras. And if Xiaomi only has top models equipped with powerful cameras, then Meizu even offers budget phones a decent camera with a wide viewing angle.

An important advantage is the button mTouch, which is included in all Meizu smartphones. It is both touch and mechanical, and also has a built-in fingerprint scanner.

Why are smartphones from Meizu worse?

Despite their advantages, smartphones from this company have their drawbacks, which include the processors found in budget models. Powerful processors are expected only in 2017 models. Currently, the manufacturer equips even flagship models with chips designed for the budget and middle class.

Another significant disadvantage of Meizu is unstable updates. It's not uncommon for an updated operating system to start glitching.

What are the best smartphones from Xiaomi?

The company produces good smartphones at an affordable price. The manufacturer practically does not increase the cost, and states that there is practically no benefit from smartphones. The company makes profit from the sale of other equipment.

The big advantage is that every Xiaomi smartphone is equipped with an infrared port. It is necessary to control household appliances from the manufacturer. Using the IR port window and special software, you can control your air conditioner, TV and other equipment.

The manufacturer installs powerful processors in devices not only in top versions, but also in budget ones. As for Xiaomi's mid-range models, they all have powerful hardware and are capable of handling any demanding game.

Why are smartphones from Xiaomi worse?

The main disadvantage is limited quantities. Basically, you can order a smartphone from Xiaomi only via the Internet, where a large price markup is possible.

U Xiaomi also unstable updates for the operating system. In addition, there are minor flaws in the OS.

The most important drawback is the lack of Russian language in the menu. In order to use a smartphone in Russia, you will have to find suitable firmware that does not have side bugs.

Conclusion

Review Meizu and Xiaomi showed that both companies produce good smartphones at an affordable price. For lovers of high-quality reportage photography, smartphones with powerful cameras from Meizu, and fans of hard games can choose Xiaomi with powerful iron.

There were scratches on the case, white stripes on the display, but I did not wear this phone in a case and there was no film on it. It was an interesting device, but time had worn it out and I had to choose a new smartphone.

To be fair, I would like to note that I have a so-so attitude towards things. My Meizu was always in my pocket with apartment keys and coins. And I didn’t carefully place the phone on the table; it even fell over several times.

Meizu has one killer feature that its competitors don’t have, and that’s the Home button. Indeed, the smartphone can be controlled with a single button. And this is not only real, but also very convenient. In terms of control, Meizu is many times better than Xiaomi with its gestures and on-screen buttons. And the cherry is that there is a fingerprint scanner built into the Home button.

Everything is great, isn't it? But there is one BUT: if this button fails, then that’s it. You have lost control of your smartphone. And this is a very common problem. How can a button fail? By exposure to moisture. Under no circumstances should this be allowed to happen. A small drop got into my smartphone and destroyed this button. The first time I was able to “resurrect” her, but the second time nothing helped her.

And the biggest problem is that this button cannot be easily replaced. For example, in the Meizu M2 Note, to replace it, you just need to remove the board and battery, but the Meizu M2 Mini has a completely different design. You will have to remove the screen, and only then change the button. This is such a difficult operation that it is easier to replace the entire screen + button module than to try to replace one button.

Xiaomi for 10,000 rubles.

I don't have a lot of money to buy a smartphone. I don't understand people who take out loans for Samsung and iPhone. and I would like to stay on it, but the limited budget of 12 thousand rubles for a smartphone took its toll.

Now everything up to 25,000 rubles are budget smartphones, but the truth is that here in Orel people buy smartphones for 10,000 rubles and for them it is very expensive. This does not apply to people who buy an iPhone for 40-80 thousand on credit.

Besides the cost, I had three more wishes: 32 gigabytes of internal memory, a FullHD screen and a Qualcomm 625/636 processor. I used MTK for a long time and had no problems, but I wanted to move on.

In this price segment, Meizu has Meizu M6 Note and I was almost ready to buy this smartphone. If not for one thing... display.

Meizu M6 Note had a ton of defects.

Before I buy anything I look and read reviews. Many bloggers had complaints about the brightness and color rendition of the display. I started digging deeper and thanks to 4pda I found out that the smartphone not only had a problem with the display, but also a problem with the touchscreen. It doesn't always handle clicks accurately. I did not see such a problem in my Meizu M2 mini. And my sister had a Meizu M2 Note and had no problems.

The problem with the display was that it went green when tilted, and there was not enough brightness reserve. This is a failure from Meizu. And for the summer of 2018, Meizu has nothing to answer to such Xiaomi hits as Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus and Xiaomi Redmi 5 Note.

Xiaomi is beyond competition.

In such a situation, no matter how “die-hard” a fan you are, you start looking at your competitors. Only Xiaomi fits into my price range, so I started looking at them. My wife has been using a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 since the beginning of summer, in an “expensive and rich” color. She likes it, I also like the smartphone, except for the color. I chose Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus. I ordered a smartphone on TMALL for 10,800 rubles, which fit into my budget and I was willing to pay this money.

Yes, you could save money by ordering the global version from another seller, and you could take the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, but I have a budget and everything before it is normal, everything above it is bad.

Differences between Meizu and Xiaomi.

left: Meizu M2 Mini, right: Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus.

The main difference when moving from Meizu to Xiaomi is the management experience. If in Meizu everything was controlled by one button and this was the most, then in Xiaomi there are gestures and on-screen buttons.

I didn’t use gestures, but the on-screen buttons are just what I need. Fortunately, previous smartphones had just these and I had experience using them.

For the shell plus/minus everything is the same. The basic settings are the same, the only thing personal is the lack of Google Play services. They had to be installed from the Flyme store. Xiaomi Google Play comes out of the box and this is not only correct, but also logical. Meizu should not forget that FlymeOS is primarily a shell, and not a separate operating system, as they believe.

In terms of speed, Xiaomi MIUI and Meizu FlymeOS are the same. I didn’t measure the speed with benchmarks, but there is no difference by eye. In both cases everything is quite fast. Of course, Redmi 5 Plus does everything much faster compared to the old Meizu M2 Mini, but the smoothness of animation in the shells is the same.

If Meizu had introduced a real competitor to Redmi 5 Plus, then perhaps I would have stayed with FlymeOS. This is a good shell and the Meizu M2 Mini was of good quality. I don’t know what exactly the problems are with the Meizu M6 Note, but it seems to me that they decided to start saving.

If you follow new products, you have heard about Meizu M6T. But this smartphone was created as a competitor to Redmi 5. It has nothing to do with Redmi 5 Plus and especially Redmi 5 Note.

It turns out an interesting picture that Meizu has no worthwhile models in the budget of 10,000 to 15,000 rubles that can compete with Xiaomi. Perhaps the situation will change radically by autumn and winter, when many manufacturers present their new products, but at the moment Xiaomi is definitely on top.

Answering the question of what to buy, I will say the following: if you have a budget of 10,000 - 15,000 rubles, then take Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus or Xiaomi Redmi 5 Note. If your budget is lower, you can take Meizu M8C. I think the price will soon drop and this smartphone will be able to compete with budget phones from Xiaomi.
