Windows 10 system evaluation. Command line and PowerShell performance index. Data backup

After upgrading to Windows 10, many users began to become interested in the benefits of exchanging “Seven” for “Ten”. Is the new system really characterized by high operating speed and how can you check its performance index yourself?

Estimating Performance Index Using the Command Line

You can find out the performance index in Windows 10 in various ways. The fastest and most accessible way for any user is to evaluate the health of the system through the command line. To do this, you should perform the following steps:

  • Right-click on the “Start” icon and select “Command Prompt (Admin).”
  • For a general performance assessment, enter the “winsat formal” command.

  • An analysis of the system and computer components for operability will start.

If you want to find out the performance of Windows 10 by other parameters, enter the following commands:

  • Resetting the results of the previous test – winsat formal -restart clean;
  • Detailed report – winsat formal –v;
  • Evaluation of new components during re-inspection – winsat formal -restart never;
  • Saving and outputting results in the form of a table in an xml file – wisat formal -xml file.xml.

After performing the analysis, you can find out the result at: drive C, “Windows”, “Performance”, “WinSAT”, “DataStore”. Each file in this folder will be responsible for a different performance parameter.

This performance test can be run when the laptop is fully charged.

Checking Windows 10 performance through Control Panel

You can find out the overall performance index in Windows through the Control Panel. To do this, click “Start” and select the desired section. In the “Control Panel”, select “All Items...” and click on “Counters and Productivity Tools”.

A new window will open, which will indicate an assessment of the computer’s condition in terms of memory, graphics, reading speed and information exchange.

A software way to evaluate the performance of a Windows 10 computer

To check the performance of your computer using software, you need to download and install an application compatible with Windows 10.

Windows 10 system assessment program – ExperienceIndexOK. Setting up the program is quite simple. The language can be changed using the Lan button. The interface is intuitive and resembles a built-in utility.

The next program that is compatible with Windows 10 is Winaero WEI Tool. This software is portable and does not require installation. System performance is displayed in the form of a familiar table.

You can test your computer's performance using the WSAT program, which has a simple and intuitive interface and does not require installation.

Knowing the system performance index, you can learn about the shortcomings of the operating system, hardware configuration options, eliminate the shortcomings and customize the PC to suit your needs.

It is generally accepted that in Windows 10 (this is also true for Windows 8.1), Microsoft abandoned the tool designed to evaluate PC performance. However, this is not entirely true, the function of obtaining a performance index in the “top ten” is still enabled - only its graphical interface, which was present in Vista and Windows 7, has been eliminated. You can get an assessment of the performance of a Windows 10 computer as follows...

How to Run a Benchmark Test on Windows 10

Running test fromPowerShell:

  • Open PowerShell as administrator. To do this, using Windows search, type “powershell” without quotes, and by right-clicking, run the application as administrator;

  • In the window that opens, enter: winsat formal and press "Enter";

  • The performance test will begin, which, depending on the configuration of your PC, may take from one to several minutes;

  • Upon completion of the test, its results will be written to an XML file, it is available at: C:\Windows\Performance\WinSAT\DataStore\…Formal.Assessment (Recent).WinSAT.xml. You can open it for viewing, for example, with the Microsoft Edge browser (right-click → open with → select program), but the data is not so convenient for perception here;

  • To visually view the performance index, enter the following cmdlet in PowerShell: Get-CimInstance Win32_WinSAT and press the “Enter” key;

  • Or copy the text below:

$i = (Get-CimInstance Win32_Winsat)

$o = "Rating"

$d+=@(“$o processor”=($i.CPUScore))

$d+=@(“$o direct3D”=($i.D3DScore))

$d+=@(“$o disks”=($i.DiskScore))

$d+=@(“$o graphics”=($i.GraphicsScore))

$d+=@(“$o memory”=($i.MemoryScore))

and paste it into PowerShell, then the results will be displayed like this (in the screenshot).

System assessment using a free utilityWSAT

  • To evaluate performance, you can use the free WSAT utility; it does not require installation, and, at its core, it is the same graphical interface for evaluating performance, “cut out” of Windows 10 by Microsoft developers;
  • Download the latest version of WSAT from this link (archived), extract and run the WSAT.exe file, the following window will immediately open, where the ratings are presented: processor, memory, graphics, game graphics, hard drive, the date of the last test is also indicated here, there is a button to start a repeat test;

  • By clicking on the “ellipsis”, the program will display a number of additional information about the processor (model, frequencies), memory (total capacity), video card (model, driver version), storage devices (hard drives and SSD drives).

As for the results themselves, be sure to keep in mind that the performance index of the same computer (in the same configuration) in Windows 7 and Windows 10 will be different, because in the first case, system performance is assessed on a scale from 1 to 7.9 points, and in the second from 1 to 9.9.

Owners of computers who switched to Windows 10 were faced with the following unpleasant fact - the developers from Microsoft did not equip their new operating system with an interface for determining computer performance, as was implemented in Windows 7.

Thus, now the “Ten” user is not able to find out the Windows 10 performance index by simply opening the system properties. But it is still possible to perform a PC performance test in the new OS. This assessment can be done manually yourself or using a special program. The user will learn about all this by reading this article.

What is this test for?

This test is required when purchasing a PC. Often there is a need to check that all PC components comply with the specified list in its accompanying documentation. If you have available instructions (the manual is given in the article below), such an assessment can easily be made even directly in the presence of the computer seller. In case of obstacles on the part of the seller, it is easy to test the PC using the system’s own means, i.e., without using third-party utilities (via the command line).

Using the Command Line

In order to evaluate system performance via the command line, you must perform the following sequential steps:

Performance test using the "Winaero WEI Tool" application

Especially for the convenience of users who do not want to master the command line functionality, a free application has been developed that performs a performance test and displays the familiar interface with ratings, borrowed from the “Seventh” version of the operating system. The main advantage of this utility is that there is no need to install it on Windows 10. You just need to copy the program into your computer’s memory and you can immediately launch it to work.

The Windows 10 performance index is determined by the program using standard operating system tools, i.e. the ratings will completely coincide with the displayed information from the file described in the previous paragraph of the article. In case the computer owner has any doubts about the derived assessments, the “Winaero WEI Tool” provides a special button “Re-run the assessment”, which, when clicked, starts the test again and the updated assessments will be available to the user.

How to improve test results and improve grades?

It is quite affordable to increase the performance of Windows 10. Often due to software that does not correspond to the computer hardware, or if there are simply outdated drivers, in this case the system will be underestimated.

To optimize OS performance, you need to perform the following steps:

The number of “interactive tiles” in Start has a small, but still influence on the speed of the computer. All you need to do is remove some tiles that the user rarely accesses, and system performance will increase, since they consume the resources of the computer’s processor and video accelerator.

It is also recommended to get rid of various operating system notifications. To do this, you need to go to “Settings”, then go to the “System” tab and deactivate the “Show tips for working with Windows” item by moving the slider to the “Disable” position.

The Windows 10 interface lacks the “System Performance” tool, which is used in the “seven”. But the function of calculating this parameter itself has not been removed from the operating system. Moreover, in the latest version of the OS, the maximum indicator numbers have been increased from 7.9 to 9.9.

Performance Evaluation

Although there is no "Performance Meters and Tools" item, in Windows 10 you can find out this indicator manually or using third-party programs.

Using the command line

Launch Command Prompt as Administrator. After that, enter the command: winsat formal –restart clean

Interesting! Team " winsat formal –restart clean» erases the history of checks, and then performs the calculation again. Team " winsat formal» does not delete previous data.

The device assessment process will take up to several minutes. Once it finishes, close the window and go to:

Disk with installed OS –> Windows –> Performance –> WinSAT –> DataStore

where open the file Formal.Assessment (Recent).WinSAT.xml. The file name begins with the creation date. The document displays system performance data:

  • SystemScore – performance index indicator corresponding to the minimum figure identified during diagnostics;
  • MemoryScore – RAM indicators;
  • CpuScore – indicators of the central processor;
  • GraphicScore – indicator of interface performance and video playback;
  • GamingScore – device performance indicators in games;
  • DiskScore – indicators of information exchange with a hard drive or solid-state drive.

Video

Brief instructions on how to do everything correctly are presented in the video.

The performance index is also listed in the Games window. To view it, enter the query in the “Run” utility shell:games, after which the “Games” window will open. This option is listed on the right.

Important! When checking a mobile gadget (tablet or laptop), connect it to a charger, otherwise the diagnostics will not start.

Using the WSAT program

You can find out the performance indicator using third-party programs such as WSAT. This utility will run a device scan and display the results in a form familiar to the user. The program does not need to be installed or configured; just run the executable file. WSAT supports a Russian-language interface.

The video shows in detail how to use the WSAT utility.

Increased productivity

You can increase the performance of a device running Windows 10 in several ways: by changing system settings and/or changing hardware.

The main reason for the slow operation of the device is old or non-original hardware drivers. To watch this, go to:

Device Manager -> select hardware -> Properties -> Driver

If the supplier is Microsoft, visit the official website of the hardware developer and download the latest driver build from there.

Uninstalling apps from the Start menu

There are a lot of live app tiles in the Start menu after upgrading to Windows 10. They consume device resources, so they should be removed if no longer needed:

Right-click (RMB) on the application -> unpin from start screen

Right-click on the Start menu -> System -> Advanced system settings -> "Advanced" tab -> "Performance" block -> Settings

Select one of the items in the window. To maximize performance, set the checkbox to "Get the best performance."

Turn off Windows notifications and prompts

Windows 10 Action Center uses significant device resources. This slows things down and drains your battery quickly as the system checks almost all applications. Go to:

Start -> Settings -> System -> Notifications and actions -> turn off notifications you don't need

In Windows 10, the interface of windows and folders adapts to the picture used as the desktop background, which uses device resources.

Start -> Settings -> Personalization -> Colors -> Select a color -> Automatically select the main background color -> disable

Removing viruses, malware, updating hardware

Cleaning your device of viruses increases performance, as does improving the hardware installed on the device.

Conclusion

You can find out the Windows 10 performance index either independently or using third-party programs. In the second case, this is done faster and easier. After this, you can increase the system's performance by changing its parameters, such as visual effects, display of tooltips, dynamic color adaptation, installation of new drivers, which is briefly discussed in the video.

Microsoft, in the eighth version of its Windows operating system, decided to remove the system performance assessment tool and the table that displayed the scores received by individual components of a personal computer. This index is also missing in Windows 10. However, the functionality itself has not disappeared. Moreover, the rating scale has become more logical, changing its maximum value from eight to ten points. And despite the fact that there is no corresponding item in the system properties, performance assessment can be found both using standard OS tools and using third-party applications.

Benchmarking Windows 10 Performance

Many people were waiting for the release of the new operating system from Microsoft because, in addition to visual changes, a significant part of the code was reworked, which, according to Redmond employees, led to an increase in the speed and responsiveness of the system. Complex technical solutions developed and implemented by the company's programmers had a good impact on the overall performance of the OS, and you can use the Windows 10 Performance Index as a verification tool, comparing it with similar indicators of previous versions of the operating system.

Find out the performance rating using the command line

You can evaluate the performance of your PC using the standard tools of the OS itself. To do this, you need to run a special command in the CMD shell. must be run as administrator. To do this, right-click on the “Start” icon and select the “Command Prompt (Administrator)” menu item. In the console window that appears, you need to type winsat formal-restart clean and confirm execution by pressing the Enter key, after which the performance assessment in Windows 10 will start.

Interestingly, executing this command will completely erase the history of previously conducted checks and the scoring will begin anew. If you run the winsat formal command without an additional key, the previous data will be saved.

It is also important to know that when checking a mobile device, such as a laptop or tablet, it must be connected to a power source, otherwise running diagnostics will not be possible.

It will take a few minutes for the system to evaluate the device's capabilities, depending on its power, after which you can close the command line window. The test results are located in the Formal.Assessment.WinSAT.xml file, located at: C:\Windows\Performance\WinSAT\DataStore, in the WinSPR section. The data in it is presented in the form of a table with the following values:

  • SystemScore provides an overall performance score based on the minimum of the values shown below.
  • MemoryScore displays the result of the device's RAM test.
  • CpuScore - score obtained by the central processor.
  • raphicScore summarizes the test of the graphics subsystem when working with the interface, as well as video content.
  • GamingScore shows the device's performance in graphics-intensive applications and games.
  • DiskScore displays the performance rating of your hard drive.

This method of testing system performance does not require the installation of third-party software, and performance assessment in Windows 10 can be carried out in the absence of an Internet connection.

Determining the performance index using the Winaero WEI Tool utility

For those who don’t want to bother with the command line, there is a special utility for calculating and displaying system performance ratings - Winaero WEI Tool. In addition to being free, the program is also portable, which allows you to use it without the need for installation. You just need to download it from the manufacturer’s website, unpack the downloaded archive and run the executable file. The program's interface is reminiscent of that of Windows 7. When making an assessment, the utility uses data from a standard operating system performance index checking tool.

Increase system performance

You can improve the performance of Windows 10 through several factors. The main reason for the decrease in this indicator is the use of outdated or non-original device drivers. To update, you need to go to Device Manager and select the “Update hardware configuration” menu item. Windows will try to find and install the most appropriate and up-to-date drivers. The number of “live tiles” displayed in the Start menu also affects performance. It is recommended to unpin all unused tiles from the Start screen using the corresponding context menu item for each of them. In additional systems, you should disable all or some visual effects, because they consume video card and CPU resources. To increase system performance, you can also disable OS notifications and prompts. To do this, you need to launch the “Settings” application and, in the “System” sub-item, turn off the switch for the “Display tips for working with Windows” item. It is also important to keep the system secure and prevent all kinds of viruses from entering it.

The Windows 10 Performance Score can be used as a tool to measure the responsiveness and performance of a device, its individual components, and the operating system installed on it. And, despite the fact that the manufacturer has complicated access to this functionality, using it is not difficult.
