In the category of mapping applications on the Android platform, the undisputed leader is undoubtedly Google Maps. However, very soon this quiet life may come to an end, as the HERE app from Nokia is about to be released. We looked at the first beta version of this program and came to the conclusion that the battle will be serious.
Nokia's mapping service has always been somewhat in the shadows for Android users due to the lack of a corresponding mobile application. And it’s completely in vain, because HERE Maps surpasses many competitors in terms of coverage and reliability of maps. Suffice it to say that they use data from the world's leading manufacturer of digital maps and geographic information systems, Navtq. HERE Maps currently covers 196 countries, including navigation services in 96 countries.
After Nokia released a series of its own Android smartphones, which included proprietary maps, the question of developing a version of HERE Maps for other devices was only a matter of time. And this happened: the company confirmed it, and the first betas leaked to the Internet.
When you first launch the application, it asks you to register, but you will only need this if you are going to save your favorite places and routes. The main place in the program window is occupied by a map of the area, only there is a search bar at the top, and several small buttons are located in the corners.
Using the menu button, you can open the program control panel, which contains buttons for switching to navigation mode (“By Car”), calling up a list of saved places (“Collections”), switching to offline mode, and accessing settings. On the right side there is another sliding panel, which makes it possible to change the map display style. In general, the information about the area provided by the application seemed quite detailed and reliable to me.
Motorists will be pleased with the navigation function, which is available in both follow and review modes. The application has a voice prompt function, including in Russian, but the files necessary for this must be downloaded additionally. In the car mode settings, you can set the unit system, route selection options, enable speed alerts, and so on.
If you don't drive a car, then Nokia HERE will also be a very useful application for you. It is capable of not only plotting routes for walking, but also knows everything about the movement of local public transport. To do this, you only need to indicate the purpose of your trip, and the program will immediately lay out all the possible options for achieving it with the number of transfers and stops.
Finally, we have saved for you the most pleasant feature of the Nokia HERE application, which, it seems, will become a trump card in the fight against Google Maps. The fact is that all its features can be used without an Internet connection. To do this, select “Download maps” in the menu and then indicate your country. Cards are quite large, so you need to make sure you have enough space on your SD card.
Overall, the Nokia HERE app looks quite interesting and promising. Thanks to versatile and up-to-date map information, a user-friendly interface and the presence of all the necessary functions, it is quite capable of competing with Google Maps. And the ability to work offline may even tip the scales in the fight for the favor of users. Disadvantages include insufficient optimization and some “thoughtfulness” of the interface, which will be especially noticeable on weak devices. However, do not forget that this is only a beta version.

I decided to update Nokia Maps on my phone to a new version.
I don’t really need a navigator (I like to plot my own route :)), but I actively use my phone as a map. Therefore, the main reason for updating in my case is the hope that the new version has eliminated some annoying bugs in the maps. The hope was justified :)
A small note: I live in St. Petersburg and use the map in my phone to travel around the city and Europe. For other purposes I use Google Maps, Bing Maps or paper maps, as they are simply pleasant to deal with :)
So, the initial data:
1. Nokia N95 phone with Nokia Maps 2.0 installed;
2. Computer with Nokia PC Suite installed;
3. USB cable;
4. Internet access.
Procedure:
2. Select a model. A Download button appears on the screen to download the Maps Updater program, designed to update the phone's mapping software. Please note - there are step-by-step instructions on the left side of the page - you should follow them :)
3. After downloading and installing Maps Updater, connect the phone to the computer in PC Suite mode. The mode is selected on the phone itself at the time of connection. It is not necessary to run Nokia PC Suite on your computer;
4. Launch Maps Updater and allow it to update the mapping software. In this case, you will also need to confirm the installation of new programs on the phone itself.
After downloading to the phone and installing the software, the card will be ready for use, BUT! Old maps will be deleted from the phone (saved user points will remain). Therefore, you need to re-download the maps.
To do this, it is convenient to use the Nokia Map Loader program, which can be downloaded from the same page as Maps Updater (the download button is located at the bottom of the page).
Procedure:
1. Download and install Map Loader;
2. Connect your phone to your computer (for example, in PC Suite mode);
3. Launch Map Loader. Once your phone is detected, you will be presented with a list of maps available for download. Select a card by clicking on the “+” icon located in the corresponding line. Selected cards are displayed on the right side of the program window;
4. To clear the phone’s memory card from old maps, click the Delete maps from storage button, which is located in the lower right corner of the window;
5. Click the Doanload button to download new maps.
After the download process is completed (the maps are large and do not load quickly), you can close the program, disconnect the phone from the computer and try the map :)
There are several positive aspects that I’m already pleased with in the new maps (I just installed Ovi Maps 3.0, I haven’t tried using navigation yet):
1. The detail of the maps of St. Petersburg has been significantly increased - individual houses and courtyard passages are displayed. The names of parks and other large objects are written (this, of course, depends on the detail of the map for a particular area);
2. The detail of the map changes better when you change the scale, the names of streets and settlements are written more accurately than before;
3. The interface has been slightly changed: elements are drawn more accurately and take up less space, hints are displayed with the assignment of on-screen interface elements and keys. The map displays a miniature compass;
4. The database of facilities (restaurants, hotels, etc.) has been expanded. At least it seems so to me;
5. A map bug has been fixed, due to which many people saw a large empty square in the southern part of Finland instead of roads (those who drive there will understand me :));
6. Map bugs in other regions that manifested themselves in the disappearance/appearance of roads when changing the scale have been eliminated.
7. Navigation really turns on and doesn’t ask for money! (I repeat, I haven’t checked the work yet :))

Or, the best advice is to make a copy of this folder, or better yet the entire 20001a63.
According to my feelings, the file of saved points can be one of:
- drive.s2d (unlikely, but possible)
- city.s2d (already warmer)
- either in settings - recent.s2d (very similar)
Option #2:
The dots are not in the program but in the phone.
Find Landmarks in your phone menu. Mark everything and send it to yourself via SMS. You will receive a file with the extension .lmx (it can be extracted from messages using Xplore). If you then open such a file on a clean smart file manager, then all the points can again be saved in Landmarks.

In the voices folder I left only Russian and English, as well as the voice_catalog files. They also have screensaver programs.

IMPORTANT: by deleting folders with an index of countries in this way, you will lose the ability to download maps of these countries over the air. To restore this feature, you will have to resort to either downloading via NML, or you will have to delete the cities folder completely and re-download the maps.
