How it works in theory

Payment is very simple. To pay, just open the application by swiping up and bring your phone to the bank terminal, confirming the purchase. Unique data protection methods in Samsung Pay

“Tokenization” of data is the first circle of protection of user data. The essence of the method is to replace real user data (numbers, full name of the owner, etc.) with virtual ones. When a card is activated in Samsung Pay on the user’s smartphone, the real card number is replaced with an encrypted digital code - a “token”, which is generated randomly.

The KNOX protected environment is the second circle of protection, which is an entire security system. This reliably protects the smartphone from possible attacks by various malware and constantly monitors potential threats to user data.

Even if a spyware virus gets onto the device, user data will remain securely encrypted in a protected “container” inside KNOX. Before registration, the security system checks the current firmware of the device.

If the smartphone is hacked, for example, attacked by viruses or an unofficial firmware version is installed on the device, the user will not be able to register a credit card. If the smartphone is hacked by the user himself to grant administrator rights - Root rights, the KNOX security system will block the Samsung Pay service and its use will be impossible even after re-flashing the device and removing Root rights.

Authorization using a fingerprint or PIN code is the third and final layer of protection. To pay for each specific purchase using the service, mandatory user authorization using a fingerprint or a unique PIN code is used.

Even if your smartphone falls into the hands of criminals, they will not be able to pay for goods via Samsung Pay without the fingerprint of the device owner or a PIN code that is known only to you.

Conclusion

The payment system from the South Korean company allows you to save precious space in your wallet by removing all unnecessary cards, which is very important for those who use the services of several banks at once.

The main advantage of Samsung Pay is the ability to use not only contactless payment terminals (NFC), but also classic magnetic terminals (MST).

January 2019

The use of payment systems is a function that almost all phone manufacturers are trying to launch in their product line. And the Korean company Samsung is no exception. Its program is maximally adapted to the Russian user and is gaining popularity very quickly. How to use Samsung Pay, what are the capabilities of the application, what gadgets and cards support it?

What is Samsung Pay?

Quite recently, a modern specialized payment system was introduced on the territory of the Russian Federation, the main functional purpose of which is contactless payment from Samsung. In less than a year, the number of users was more than 1 million people. The specificity of the program is that you no longer need to carry plastic cards from banks that support Pay. Simply bring your mobile phone close to the terminal or other payment device, and the transaction will be completed. In fact, the device is now a reliable financial assistant and custodian of its owner’s funds. Let's figure out how to use the system and what devices this program is supported on.

How does Samsung Pay work?

The application accepted by the mobile payment service falls into the category of contactless banking transactions. Most users are wondering: do you need the Internet to make such transactions? The program works according to the following principle. First, a person makes a copy of his personal bank card in the application of his device and saves it in his gadget. The service offers its users several options for confirming the completion of banking transactions to move funds from the buyer’s card.

When you need to pay for any product or pay for a service, you just need to ensure contact between the phone and the device that reads the information from it. Samsung initially contains a magnetic wave emitter that transmits these flows at a distance. The terminal and payment card are adapted to operate on the same frequency, which is why the device sees information and reads it seamlessly at a contactless level. The transaction will take place according to the same algorithm as if the user’s plastic card was inserted into the terminal.

The main problem limiting the operation of the application is the lack of magnetic cards in some phone models - the system only supports smartphones of this configuration.

The advantage of Samsung Pay is the versatility of the service - it is supported by absolutely all terminals whose operation is regulated in the Russian Federation. Even if we are talking about an outdated version of the device, the unique experience of Korean specialists is used - it will ensure uninterrupted magnetic transmission of information. Devices compatible with the service form an artificial imitation of magnetic wave oscillations and create a field completely identical to the signal supplied by the magnetic strip present on a plastic card.

But really, where the program is powerless is ATMs. They involve internal immersion of the card, and it is impossible to pay using the method discussed in the article.

What cards does Samsung Pay support?

In addition to the phones themselves, Russian banking organizations may also be a limitation to the operation of the system. Unfortunately, at the current time there are only a few participants in the program - mostly large companies with large authorized capital. Initially, the system read only MasterCard payment cards, but later support for Visa and MIR cards was added (support for MIR system cards for Samsung Pay is currently provided by Rosselkhozbank, Otkritie Bank, PJSC CB Center-Invest and Chelindbank).

Representatives of the Samsung company recommend that Russian users of smartphones with this platform check information about the list of cards on the manufacturer’s official website. There are often cases when a person already has such a card, but he does not know about its capabilities.

How to add a card to Samsung Pay?

To register a card in Samsung Pay, you will need to follow these steps sequentially, after first accessing the standard settings of the device:

  1. Make sure your phone has protection or install it. A scanner-check or a password, which will be a code, will do. You need to remember it, since you will have to use the digital combination after each operation.
  2. Download this application.
  3. Confirm the “attach card” option, then scan it with your phone camera. Enter the rest of the information manually.
  4. Pass the banking test via SMS message with a code attached.
  5. The card has been added, it is now possible to pay Samsung Pay through any payment terminal.

Which banks work with Samsung Pay?

In 2018, the official list of Samsung Pay banks actively cooperating with the application included 49 organizations. Not all of them are purely banking structures - this list includes, for example, Yandex Money, Megafon, and the Euroset Kukuruza card.

The most popular banks in the Russian Federation that support Samsung Pay (both Visa and MasterCard are supported):

  1. Sberbank
  2. Rosselkhozbank
  3. Tinkoff Bank
  4. Gazprombank
  5. Binbank
  6. Home Credit Bank
  7. RaiffeisenBank
  8. Promsvyazbank
  9. Bank opening

The above is an incomplete list - you can find all organizations supporting this payment service on the official Samsung website on the corresponding page.

Which phones support Samsung Pay?

What devices does Samsung Pay work on? Unfortunately, today not all owners of Samsung phones can download the program and make payments using this method. The option is available and works on the following Samsung devices:

  1. Samsung Galaxy S9
  2. Samsung Galaxy S9+
  3. Samsung Galaxy S8
  4. Samsung Galaxy S8+
  5. Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge
  6. Samsung Galaxy S7
  7. Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+
  8. Samsung Galaxy S6
  9. Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge
  10. Samsung Galaxy Note 8
  11. Samsung Galaxy Note 5
  12. Samsung Galaxy A8
  13. Samsung Galaxy A8+
  14. Samsung Galaxy A7 2017
  15. Samsung Galaxy A5 2017
  16. Samsung Galaxy A3 2017
  17. Samsung Galaxy A7 2016
  18. Samsung Galaxy A5 2016
  19. Samsung Galaxy J7 2017
  20. Samsung Galaxy J5 2017
  21. Samsung Gear S3 Classic
  22. Samsung Gear Sport
Note! Before you try to connect Samsung Pay, check the specific version of the listed models - there may be devices that are not adapted for this application. The manufacturer, in turn, promises that in the very near future this list will expand and be replenished with new models.

The service developers warn that the platform is only compatible with the original factory firmware. All phones classified as “gray” in Russia, even if their model is included in the list of compatible versions, most likely will not be able to work correctly with Samsung Pay. The program is successfully downloaded to the device, but any attempt to complete a transaction will display a “connection error” message on the screen.

Payment security

Korean manufacturers, of course, took the reliability factor into account, protecting their users in several areas at once:

  1. During the transaction, all personal information about the client is stored in the device - the Samsung Pay payment system does not transfer it to the terminal. He only sees numbers. Tokenization is one of the most reliable security mechanisms.
  2. Any purchase made will be supported by a fingerprint or a special code. The first option completely eliminates the possibility of counterfeiting, so it is more preferable.
  3. The program works on phones that initially have a high-quality antivirus program installed that blocks all illegal operations. If an attempt is made to hack the system, all personal data and bank card numbers will be deleted automatically.

Video on the topic

Samsung's MST technology is a secure yet easy-to-use contactless payment service. It makes it possible to add several bank cards and pay for purchases using your phone in NFC-enabled terminals with a magnetic stripe.

To make a payment for a purchase, just install a working application on your smartphone and attach a bank card to it. By the way, you can attach up to 10 cards at a time, and when paying you can choose between them. Cards can be loaded into a smartphone and paid at supported locations.

What is the main advantage of Samsung Pay technology?

Samsung Pay also supports NFC (contactless) payment terminal systems, and also ensures high security when making payments, since the card data itself is not disclosed. Compared to devices from other manufacturers that use NFC technology, Samsung Pay can work not only with terminals that support contactless payment. The secret is that Samsung also uses its own mst technology, which gives users the opportunity to pay for purchases using a smartphone on almost any terminal. Smartphones with mst technology that are compatible with the Samsung Pay service can create a special magnetic field, similar to the signal from the magnetic stripe of a bank card. Often, even sellers do not know that this can be easily done in their stores.

Which phones use MST technology?

Models that can work with this option are:

  • Samsung Galaxy S7.
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+.
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 edge.
  • Samsung Galaxy A5 2016 and A7.

In the future, the model range will develop.

This is how mst technology from Samsung works. We should soon expect the arrival of another payment system - from Apple Pay. Also, with the arrival of Android 6.0, we can expect a third similar mobile system - Android Pay.

We tell, we explain on fingers.

Samsung Pay was launched in Russia at the end of September. And today I started supporting Visa cards. The competitor has finally matured, now the battle will be life and death.

We decided to find out if there is a difference between Samsung Pay and Samsung Pay. What devices are supported? And what goodies you can get for free using Samsung Pay in Russia.

Consider this post FAQ via Samsung Pay. Go. What are the differences?

1. Works on the best Samsung smartphones that are worth it

Today, the payment service of the South Korean company is supported by the following devices:

  • Samsung Galaxy S7
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 edge
  • Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016)
  • Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016)
  • Samsung Galaxy Note5
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 edge (NFC only)
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 (NFC only)
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+

For comparison:
The Apple payment system is supported by 8 gadgets: iPhone 6| 6 Plus, iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, iPhone 7| 7 Plus, Apple Watch (if you have any Apple smartphone starting with iPhone 5) and iPhone SE. In other words, the total number of compatible devices is comparable to the list of the American company.

2. Your card is already supported

Today, the Samsung Pay service is available for MasterCard and Visa cards. The following banks became partners:

– MasterCard cards:

  • Alfa Bank
  • Bank opening"
  • Russian Standard Bank
  • Bank "Saint-Petersburg"
  • BIN-Bank
  • VTB 24
  • MTS-Bank
  • Raiffeisenbank
  • Rocketbank
  • Sberbank
  • Tinkoff Bank
  • Dot
  • Yandex money

– Visa cards:

  • Alfa Bank
  • MTS-Bank
  • Raiffeisenbank

For comparison:
After its launch in Russia, Apple Pay worked exclusively for the first month only with MasterCard cards from Sberbank. Later, more people joined the system. Since mid-November, support for Visa cards from two banks has appeared: Alfa-Bank and Tinkoff. .

3. You can pay EVERYWHERE, Apple Pay can’t do that

The main feature of Samsung Pay is that the system works not only with terminals that support contactless payment (NFC technology).

Samsung uses its own technology – MST(from the English Magnetic Secure Transmission - magnetic secure transmission), allowing you to pay using a smartphone at almost any terminal that accepts bank cards.

The system can imitate the magnetic stripe of a card! Samsung smartphones that support MST technology create a magnetic field similar to the signal from the magnetic stripe of a bank card. The range of action is about 7–8 centimeters.

It was for this technology that Samsung acquired the company LoopPay, whose engineers implemented the idea of MST.

For comparison:
Where Nikita was in his experiment with trying to pay for groceries using an iPhone #pshelvonmajor, Samsung Pay would do everything right. The payment system of the South Korean company gives the owner a sense of peace of mind; there is no need to peer at the payment terminal to see if there are “PayPass” and “PayWave” icons there. Samsung Pay works wherever bank cards are accepted.

MST is not supported by Samsung S6 edge| S6. However, this a very serious advantage over Apple Pay.

4. Payment is just as secure, if not safer.

The purchase is confirmed using a fingerprint. In other words, even if a smartphone is stolen, attackers will not be able to confirm payment without the fingerprint of the real owner of the device.

In addition, a three-level data protection system is used for security.

Firstly, "tokenization". Its essence is to replace the client’s real data (card number) with virtual ones. When activating a card for Samsung Pay, the real card number is replaced with a special digital random code. That is, when paying, personal information is not used, which means it remains protected.

Secondly, the built-in security system is called Samsung KNOX. Its purpose is to check the smartphone’s firmware before registering a new bank card and when using a payment service. If viruses are detected or Samsung firmware is modified, KNOX may block Samsung Pay.

If Root is detected on a smartphone, the payment system on the smartphone is completely blocked. Even resetting to original settings won't help. Harsh, but logical.

In addition, Samsung KNOX ensures that Samsung Pay data is protected regardless of the smartphone's operating system.

5. Set up is just as easy and supports everything

Samsung Pay settings are practically no different from those in the Apple product. You can enter card data manually or take a photo. Confirmation of a new card in the system occurs via SMS notification.

We opened the application, selected a card, and were identified using a fingerprint scanner. If necessary, enter the PIN code of the plastic card at the terminal. Profit!

The Samsung Pay service itself is provided at no additional cost.

6. And here, too, there are interesting offers for users

Using Samsung Pay you can take part in pleasant bonus promotions.

For example, in Moscow “Shokoladnitsa” there is a 50% discount on hot drinks, and “Kinokhod” offers free coupons for cinemas. Get cashback on your VTB24 card. In Samsung stores, using a branded payment service when paying, you can get a discount on branded accessories (15% on Gear Fit2, 15% on Gear VR, 30% on Level On Pro).

Eventually. Samsung Pay is more convenient than Apple Pay, period

Only with Samsung Pay can you pay for purchases EVERYWHERE in Russia. You don't need to look for contactless payment terminals. There is no need to arrange weekly tests, as Nikita did, and limit yourself in possibilities. The only exceptions are terminals that require inserting a card and do not support NFC, and an external magnetic stripe card reader is also not available.

Just bring the phone to the magnetic reader - and you're done. It couldn't be simpler. This is what payment from a smartphone should look like in 2016.

It's a shame Apple can't do that. But Samsung are handsome, and that’s the point. Learn, there in Cupertino!

In some countries, cash payments are extremely rare. Their popularity is declining here too. Bank cards have forever found a place in the wallets of many Russians. Gradually the cards become more and more interesting. Like modern smartphones, they also receive support for modern technologies. In particular, cards with NFC chip. To pay with it, you just need to touch the card to the terminal, if it is equipped with support for the appropriate technology.

If you use the appropriate service, then in theory you can completely refuse to carry a credit or debit card with you. After making a purchase, you just need to touch your smartphone to the terminal and the funds will be debited from your account. At the same time, you will not waste traffic, since the transaction is processed by the terminal itself - the smartphone only provides information about your card, and even then indirectly.

The South Koreans realized in time that not all terminals are yet equipped with an advanced wireless chip. Therefore, many Samsung smartphones have received support for the technology MST. They can emit a magnetic field - it is analogous to the magnetic stripe found on almost every bank card. As a result, payment using Samsung Pay works even if the terminal is not designed for contactless payments. And such devices may well be installed in small grocery stores, coffee shops, restaurants and fast food outlets - anywhere where the owner of the establishment does not yet want to spend money on replacing the terminal. Interestingly, sellers may not even suspect that they can be paid in such an unusual way.

Does Samsung Pay work in Russia?

Now in Russia there are over one and a half million payment terminals. NFC technology is currently supported by approximately 200 thousand of them. Smartphones Galaxy S6 And Galaxy S6 Edge work only with them, which somewhat limits their use. The rest of the devices, a list of which we will give below, are equipped with MST technology. This allows you to use them with any terminals. The only exceptions are those establishments that have very old terminals, where you must insert a card. Fortunately, there are fewer and fewer such places in Russia every day.

There are still restrictions on using Samsung Pay in Russia. It lies in the fact that the service must be supported not only by the smartphone, but also by the bank that provided its client with the card. At first, banks did not trust the new service. But recently the situation has improved greatly. Now you can enter cards from Raiffeisen Bank, Tinkoff Bank, Alfa-Bank, Sberbank, VTB24 and many others into the corresponding application.

But this only applies MasterCard. Unfortunately, with Visa Cooperation is developing a little more slowly. Its support is currently only available in Raiffeisen Bank, VTB24, MTS Bank, Tinkoff Bank and Alfa-Bank. But there is no doubt that this list will expand in the future. The current list of banks can be found on the official website Samsung Pay.

What devices does Samsung Pay work on?

To work with the payment service, it is not enough to install the application. You need to make sure that your smartphone is equipped with support at the level of firmware and built-in components. Not all South Korean phones support Samsung Pay yet. The service began rolling out two years ago with the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. But, as mentioned above, they are limited to interaction with payment terminals equipped with an NFC receiver. Therefore, we would recommend not buying these two smartphones for now. Better look towards the following models:

  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+,
  • Samsung Galaxy S7,
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge,
  • Samsung Galaxy S8,
  • Samsung Galaxy S8+,
  • Samsung Galaxy A7 (2016),
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 5,
  • Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017),
  • Samsung Galaxy A7 (2017).

It should be noted that these are all devices of different price segments. Only budget devices do not support Samsung Pay yet. But it is possible that in the coming years this service deficiency will be eliminated.

How to use Samsung Pay?

An important advantage of the service is that you can start using it without visiting your bank branch. You just need to make sure that your bank and smartphone support payment via Samsung Pay. You also need to select a fingerprint or PIN code as the screen unlock method. The first option is much more convenient, since the selected method will be used to confirm the purchase - you will quickly get tired of entering the PIN code every time.

To use the service you will need to download the application Samsung Pay, and then activate it. Next, your card details are entered into the program. This can be done manually, or automatically - by photographing the card. If your bank is on the list of those supporting the service, then you will be asked to accept its agreement, as well as the agreement of Samsung Pay itself.

In a few seconds, you will receive an SMS on your phone containing a one-time code. It must be entered into the application window. The last step is your signature. It can be entered with your finger or stylus. This is necessary for those cases when the seller wants to compare it with the signature that you leave on the check. This is required in very rare situations.

In total, a smartphone can contain ten different bank cards. And on how many devices you can enter the data of one card - this already depends on the specific bank.

Samsung Pay security

Many people feel that when using Samsung Pay they can easily lose their funds. Such people have the impression that a fraudster only needs to bring the terminal to his pocket or purse, and the money will literally fly away into nowhere. But read the reviews for this service! No one has encountered such situations before! Why? There are three reasons for this:

  • Samsung smartphones use a special protection system KNOX. She checks the device for presence root rights, viruses and firmware modifications. If something does not suit this technology, then the application simply will not install. Virus checks are carried out on a regular basis - in which case the Samsung Pay program is blocked.
  • To carry out financial transactions, authorization using a PIN code or fingerprint is required. Without this, it is impossible to write off even minimal funds from the card. And if the PIN code can theoretically be spied, then such a trick will not work with a fingerprint. In any case, with such protection, you don’t have to worry about the money on your bank card if your smartphone gets lost somewhere.
  • It might seem to you that Samsung Pay stores information about a bank card - its number, owner’s name, etc. But that's not true. This is why the system does not work with all banks, because the application functions in a special way. It does not remember the card data, but randomly creates a special digital code. When paying for a product or service, so-called tokenization occurs - this code is sent to the bank, and not card data.

From all of the above, we can conclude that Samsung Pay is a secure payment service that is almost impossible to hack. This is also a very convenient system that allows you to forget about your bank card at least for a while. In large Russian cities it can be used literally every day. Well, as for villages and towns... Unfortunately, payment terminals have not yet reached there in such a large volume as we would like. Interestingly, some problems may also arise in the USA - there some of the functionality of the terminals is sometimes disabled, supposedly for security reasons. But you are unlikely to go abroad without a bank card.
