Comprehensive setup of Gmail from Google. Setting up Gmail in Outlook

You can work with Gmail in third-party email clients, such as Microsoft Outlook or Apple Mail. To do this, you need to enable IMAP access and configure SMTP settings. With IMAP access, you can receive Gmail emails on several devices at once; messages will be synchronized in real time. You can also use the POP protocol to work with mail.

Note. To avoid losing access to your own account, make sure that you do not exceed the traffic limits for the IMAP protocol: no more than 2500 MB per day for downloading and no more than 500 MB per day for uploading. If you need to set up IMAP access to one account on multiple computers, take breaks after setting up on each device.

How to set up IMAP

Step 1: Enable IMAP access

Step 2: Change SMTP and other settings in the client

Provide your client with the data from this table. Find more information about IMAP settings for your client online.

Troubleshooting

Can't log into email client

If you are unable to log into your email client, you may see errors like these:

  • "The application does not accept username or password."
  • "Invalid credentials."
  • It keeps asking for username and password.

Step 1: Check your password

If these problems occur, make sure you are entering the correct password.

Step 2: Try troubleshooting

  • Update your client to the latest version.
  • Use the application password. If you're using two-step verification, enter your app password.
  • Allow unsafe applications. If you use two-step verification, you may need to allow unsecured apps to access your account.
  • If you recently changed your Gmail password, you may need to re-enter your Gmail account information or re-set up your Gmail account in a third-party client.
  • If the above steps do not help, open the page https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha and follow the instructions that appear.
  • The client may be using an insecure login method. Try logging directly into the Gmail app.
  • Check to see if your email app is checking your email too often. If this happens more than once every 10 minutes, your application may be blocked.

"Too many simultaneous connections" error

A maximum of 15 simultaneous IMAP connections are allowed per account. If too many clients are accessing Gmail at the same time, an error will appear.

The “good corporation” Google is known not only for its highly accurate search, it also offers many other services. Among them is Gmail email. Moreover, it seems to “dominate” over all other services of the “corporation of good” - the lucky owner of the account can leave comments on YouTube, use the Google+ social network and download applications from the Play Market without any additional registrations.

However, the Gmail email service itself is quite advanced. Letters are sorted automatically, so you can forget about the jumble in the mailbox; notifications about important messages arrive instantly; Integration with Google Calendar will help you remember about events and meetings. The functionality can also be expanded with various add-ons. The main thing is to configure Gmail correctly.

Setting up Gmail on PC

Gmail itself has a very good web application (browser version), which is both functional and beautiful - there is nothing superfluous in the interface, and all the important buttons are obvious. However, it is not suitable for offline work, since it requires a constant connection to the Internet and does not cache email data.

If you need to use mail on Gmail without an Internet connection, it is recommended to use appropriate clients: for example, Thunderbird or Outlook (well, or any other at the user’s request).

Another important advantage of Google mail is that setting up Gmail in an offline client is very, very simple. This service is one of the three largest and most popular in the world. That’s why many programs have pre-installed settings for collecting emails from Gmail, and the user just needs to provide their email address and password. Such clients include, for example, Mozilla Thunderbird.

However, some clients, such as Microsoft Outlook, do not have preset settings for collecting mail from Gmail.

Important! For all email clients to work, you must first enable the IMAP protocol in the service! You can do this in your account settings. Open the mail web interface, click the “Settings” button, select “Settings” there, open the “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” tab, check the “Enable IMAP” radio button at the bottom of the page and click “Save changes”.

After this, you can begin setting up your email client.

In fact, most modern email clients, including MS Outlook versions older than 2007 or Apple Mail, will only require you to specify the protocol (IMAP), email address and password. Otherwise, you can use the following settings:

  • Incoming mail server IMAP:
    1. SSL required;
    2. Server address – imap.gmail.com;
    3. Port – 993.
  • Outgoing SMTP mail server:
    1. TLS Required (or Authentication Required);
    2. SSL required;
    3. Server address – smtp.gmail.com;
    4. Port – 465 or 587;
    5. The remaining parameters correspond to the IMAP (incoming mail) server.

These settings must be specified or entered in the appropriate windows of the Add Mailbox Wizard on the client. However, it is much easier to download the latest version of the corresponding program (Outlook, Thunderbird, any other), which does not require these “dances with a tambourine”.

Setting up Gmail on Android

Only Gmail account holders will be able to take advantage of all the features of the Android operating system, from installing applications from the Play Store to instant notifications about new emails.

How to set up Gmail on Android? This is much easier to do than with computer email clients! To do this, just open the Settings application, select Accounts – Add, select Google, then “Existing” and enter your login (address) and password. After this, the Gmail application will start working and can be used as a full-fledged email client.

Third-party email clients downloaded from the Play Store also support quick Gmail setup. They also just need to enter your username and password.

For third-party email clients to work on Android, you also need to enable the IMAP protocol in your Google Account settings.

Gmail messages can be received through third-party email clients that support POP, such as Microsoft Outlook.

Step 1: Make sure you need POP

To work with Gmail mail in third-party clients, you can use the IMAP or POP protocol.

Using the IMAP protocol, you can work with Gmail on several devices at once. In this case, letters are synchronized in real time.

POP access can be enabled on only one computer. In this case, letters will not be synchronized in real time - they will be downloaded to the client at the frequency that you specify.

Step 2: Set up POP access

Set up POP in Gmail first

Then set up your email client

Open a client (for example, Microsoft Outlook) and set the following options:

Incoming mail server (POP)

SSL required: yes

Outgoing mail server (SMTP)

SSL required: yes

TLS required: yes (subject to availability)

Authentication required: yes

Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587

If you use Gmail at a business or school, Contact your system administrator for SMTP configuration information.

Server timeout More than 1 minute (5 minutes recommended)
Full or display name your name
Account, username or email address Your e-mail address
Password Your Gmail password

Greetings friends and guests! Have you already chosen your email program? For it to work correctly, you will need to do a few simple steps. Let's take a closer look at how to configure gmail to process incoming and outgoing correspondence.

Basic protocols

These include IMAP, POP. I will not go into details of their work. It is enough to know that they ensure correct interaction of the email client with the Google system. Users can use them for free.

The most common protocol is IMAP. Do you know what this is connected with? It's actually simple. This protocol has the following advantages:

  • works stably;
  • provides two-way synchronization;
  • Works normally with various devices (home, mobile computers).

Let me explain the features of two-way synchronization. In simple terms, in the web interface (browser) and any other device you will see the same mail content. For example, actions with correspondence that will be performed on the phone will immediately be displayed in the browser on your computer, and vice versa.

IMAP activation

Before you set up gmail in the application on your computer or phone, you need to set several parameters directly in the mail. To get started, go to your Google inbox. I hope you have already registered there? If not, then first you need to create an account for yourself, and then continue.

Now we turn our attention to the POP and IMAP protocols. Go to the appropriate tab and enable IMAP. See the screenshot below, everything is visible there.

Done? Now don't forget to save your settings for your changes to take effect.
We can consider that half the work is done. Then everything will depend on what program and device you are using. I’ll tell you a little more about getting started with Outlook and laptops that run Android.

What data will be required for the programs?

The following are considered the main ones:

  • Ports;
  • Server addresses;
  • Connection type.

Difficult? It's actually easier than it seems. Now I will show and illustrate everything. imap.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com are server addresses for outgoing and incoming mail, respectively. Port 993 is used for incoming data, and 587 or 465 is used for outgoing data (here you need to see which one will work normally). In both cases, the connection type will be SSL.
Where should I put all this? Read on, now I’ll show you using Outlook as an example.

Setting up the program on your computer

Launch Microsoft Outlook on your computer and go to the main menu.

When setting up different versions of your email client, you need to keep in mind that the account name (username) is the full address of your e-mail. Eg, [email protected]. But if the program asks for a “display name,” then you can actually write your name.

Mail on Android

Do you need to set up an email client to run gmail on your Android tablet or phone? It will be quite simple here, since many mobile devices already “by default” support working with Google services.

First, you will need to know the incoming and outgoing mail server - imap.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com, their ports are 993 and 465, respectively. You should also check that the encryption type is set to SSL.

Where do you need to enter this data to configure google mail? In general, the interface and installed applications on each device may have individual nuances. Let's look at similar features.

To begin, as I showed above, enable the desired protocol in your mail through a regular browser on your computer. Now in the mail application or device settings, find the item related to setting up Google accounts. Now start setting up your account by entering your e-mail address and password, and fill in other fields if necessary. When ready, proceed to setting parameters for the application and enter the data described above (ports, servers and other data).

Did everything work out for you? Then honor and praise be to you. Often, a system administrator is called to perform these manipulations. Have you already thought about how you can work and earn money on the Internet? I noticed some very interesting training courses. The same social networks have millions of users and a lot of work for which they are willing to pay. But first, it wouldn’t hurt to master the specifics of making money.

Good luck to you, I'm waiting for you in social groups. A subscription to workip website updates is also available.
