What are the best speakers for a computer? How to choose the right computer speakers? Prices for Edifier X600

Over the past six months, we have tested many speaker systems, some of which are aimed at gamers. For the most part, Creative remains the undisputed leader in this area with its sound solutions. If you're serious about the sound design of your room, speakers from this manufacturer will probably be one of your best choices.

However, there are alternatives, which we will discuss below. In addition, we invite you to vote for the best speaker system, which will allow us to compile a reader rating and objectively choose the leader.

1. Creative A250 2.1: the best budget speakers

Columns Creative A250 can be purchased at a price from 2100 to 2800 rubles. You are unlikely to be able to find the best 2.1 acoustic solution in this price range. The differences between speakers in this price range are almost indistinguishable, but the Creative A250, despite its compact size, managed to impress us with a slightly clearer and richer sound. In addition, these speakers are ideal for connecting to laptops and ultrabooks.

The total power of 9 watts does not prevent the speakers from producing clear sounds compared to competitors with higher output power. True, when the sound level increases to the maximum, sound frequencies begin to distort. However, this is not critical in this price category. The only negative is the lack of a knob to control bass power, which could complement the volume switch on the right speaker.

2. Klipsch R-15PM: expensive high-end acoustics

Most users cannot imagine that you can spend up to 50,000 rubles or more on a speaker system. But audiophiles who value high sound quality and gamers who are willing to pay a lot of money for a powerful video card won’t be scared off by high prices. Therefore, as a high-quality sound system, we can offer a solution consisting of two Klipsch R-15PM speakers and a Klipsch R-12SW subwoofer.

This set of speakers supports up to five connection options (via Bluetooth, USB type B, 3.5mm mini-jack, digital optical and analog RCA connectors). The speakers provide excellent sound at all frequencies, and the small remote control included allows you to switch between sound sources on the fly - very convenient. Many of us love to hear high-quality sound everywhere, be it a player or a smartphone, but using a computer or laptop with headphones on our heads is not always convenient. If you urgently need to go somewhere quickly, you constantly have to take them off and then put them on again. You can no longer watch a video on the Internet together. In general, for a computer to function properly, you need speakers. Therefore, today we will talk about how to choose good music speakers for your computer, and what you first need to pay attention to when buying them. In a word, there will be a lot of useful things, so let's get started.

Device type

In terms of price-quality ratio, speakers can be of various types. When choosing a specific model, you need to clearly understand your needs. As often happens, the user can simply sit at the computer, listening to music and communicating on social networks. In this case, budget options of small sizes are quite suitable for him. Today, this type of device is quite cheap, and purchasing them is not difficult. But if a person uses everything to the fullest, an inexpensive stereo system is unlikely to suit him. When watching movies with an immersive effect, or when playing modern computer games, you definitely need to use more expensive and advanced speakers. This stereo system consists of several satellites and a subwoofer. The first component of the system will be responsible for reproducing mid and high frequencies. These are small speakers that fit perfectly on any computer desk. The subwoofer will allow you to reproduce all low frequency sounds. It has fairly large dimensions, which do not always allow it to be placed next to the monitor, and most often it stands on the floor. If a person decides to purchase such a system, then everything will be fine with the quality of music. Sometimes people do not want to install a bulky subwoofer, in which case they will have to look for a middle ground between sound quality and the size of this equipment. Most small models have weak, low-quality sound, while large units with good sound do not always fit organically into the interior.

Type of speaker systems depending on the number of channels

Both of these systems are intended for undemanding listeners, but many computer users will be just fine. The speakers reproduce sound effects in computer games and music in mp3 format quite well.

Speaker systems types 2.0 and 2.1

System 2.0. consists of two speakers that can reproduce sound in stereo mode.

System 2.1. consists of two stereo speakers and a subwoofer.

The 4.1 system consists of two front, two rear speakers and one subwoofer.

These speakers are made specifically for computer game lovers. Game developers specifically design stunning sound effects for the 4.1 system.

Speaker systems types 5.0 and 5.1

The 5.0 system differs from 5.1 in the absence of a subwoofer.

The 5.1 system consists of a subwoofer and five speakers: two front, two rear and one center. It was specifically designed for watching movies on DVD, and is the most popular for this movie format. Games and music also sound very good with this audio format.

Speaker system 7.1

The 7.1 system consists of a subwoofer and seven speakers: two front, two rear, one center and two center rear. This speaker system produces remarkable surround sound for home cinema in DTS Surround or Dolby Digital Surround EX formats, and is designed for true movie lovers.

Sound quality

This parameter, of course, will be the main criterion for choosing a music system. It should be noted that you should not purchase complex systems if you plan to use good speakers only for listening to music through a standard built-in sound card. In any case, it will not be able to provide a high-quality signal for speakers. This is simply money thrown away. If you just want to enjoy high-quality music, then it is better to buy a high-quality music center. But today in our article we are talking about computer acoustics, which should reproduce music and video accompaniment equally well, and produce high-quality sound in 3D games. Although the main function of electronic computing equipment is not high-quality sound reproduction, the situation can always be corrected by purchasing an expensive sound card with numerous capabilities.

Housing material

We are talking about the material of the case. The cheapest today are considered budget speakers, the housing of which is made of plastic. They may look very respectable, but all the performance characteristics of such devices and especially the sound quality tend to zero. If we talk about a wooden case, that is, made of chipboard (MDF), then this option produces much better sound. Such equipment will delight its owner with clear, surround sound. It is worth paying attention to the tightness of the stereo system. They must be completely closed from the world by the body. It is best if the bass and treble adjustments can be made directly on the speakers. This will significantly reduce the time needed to debug the stereo system.

Power, frequency and sensitivity

These are very important characteristics of any cool speakers. Power has no effect on sound volume. Many people think otherwise, but this is not true. Power indicates how mechanically reliable a given system is. The volume directly depends on the sensitivity of the devices. Sensitivity is written in the passport as a signal-to-noise ratio, and is measured in decibels (dB). Moreover, interestingly, a sensitivity difference of only 10 decibels, for example between 85 and 95 dB, doubles the volume of the stereo system. Before purchasing equipment in a store, you should definitely try the speakers for distortion. This is done quite simply. You need to connect them to the computer, and then gradually turn up the volume. As a result, at some point interference appears. Based on this data, it is worth making the final choice. Well, with the range of reproduced frequencies it’s even easier. The human ear hears sounds ranging from 20 to 20,000 Hz. It is within these limits or around this that the range is important, and what is higher and lower is not for us.

Rating of inexpensive and good computer speakers

These are the basic recommendations for those wishing to purchase good computer speakers. Below I have written the top most popular options for this technique. And now I bring to your attention a small rating of inexpensive sound speakers for a computer.

The Sven MS-2100 computer audio system with two two-way front speakers, a subwoofer and a wireless control panel is good mainly as an acoustic system for watching movies and for scoring games on a computer; music with them does not always sound good. But the quality of sound effects in films and computer games is simply excellent for a budget model with a price of $100. And for high-quality listening to music, you can have something more serious separately. So, the bodies of all elements are made of MDF and have a strict classic look. The total power of the speakers is 80 W, of which 2 to 15 are on the side speakers and 50 W on the subwoofer. The range of frequencies reproduced by the side satellites is from 200 to 20,000 Hz, by the subwoofer - from 40 to 200 Hz. A nice bonus for many users is the presence of a tuner built into the subwoofer. In addition, the subwoofer has an RCA connector for stereo line input, a USB Type A port for a flash drive, and a port for SD. This audio system is in first place in our rating due to the excellent price-quality ratio of the product. Such a device for such money is a good gift for loved ones.

New this year, the Microlab B-70 speaker system consists of a pair of small, magnetically shielded, two-way speakers made from MDF. The system has a total power of 20 W, and the signal-to-noise ratio of the music device is 75 dB. The range of reproduced frequencies of the stereo system is from 40 to 20,000 Hz. On the side panel of the active speaker there are high and low frequency controls. The device uses a mini jack connector as a linear stereo input. The stereo has nice bass and overall excellent sound for a speaker at this price point. We recommend this high-quality and small system as an option for computer sound.

Sven SPS – 619 GOLD

Small beautiful speakers with golden circles around the speakers have housings made of MDF. The stereo system has a total power of 20 W, and a reproduced frequency range from 70 to 22000 Hz. The active speaker has an amplifier, the control of which is located on its side panel. On the control panel there are also volume and treble controls, and next to them is a network indicator and a headphone jack. On the rear panel of the active speaker there is a linear stereo input in the form of a mini-Jack. There are bass reflexes located at the rear. Overall, the system sounds very high quality for its price, and as acoustics for a computer it is one of the best options.

An excellent stereo system consisting of a subwoofer, two front speakers and a wired control panel. The set, made of MDF, is decorated with beautiful metal circles around the speakers, which gives the product the appearance of an expensive, solid piece of equipment. The total output power of the system is 46 W, 20 W of which is from the subwoofer and 2 x 13 from the side speakers. The device has a range of reproduced frequencies from 40 to 20,000 Hz, of which from 40 to 150 are produced by the subwoofer, and from 150 to 20,000 by two-way satellites. The device has low frequency control, a stereo line input in the form of an RCA connector, a headphone jack and a microphone input. The device is very beautiful and sounds great, has a large volume reserve and a low price.

Small, cute computer speakers with powerful and pleasant sound have a high-quality build and will fit comfortably on a computer desk. A two-way stereo system for a computer, made of dense MDF, has two phase inverters with a total power of 42 W with magnetic shielding against sound distortion. The range of reproduced frequencies of the system is from 65 to 20,000 Hz, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 85 dB. On the rear panel of the active speaker there is a power switch and a low-frequency control. The device has an RCA connector as a linear stereo input. Among the pleasant bonuses, it should be noted that the device contains a switching power supply and clamp terminals for connecting speakers. Overall, this is a very good, and, importantly, small computer stereo system with powerful, high-quality sound for little money.

Sven Stream Light

The Sven Stream Light acoustic system consists of two active two-way sound speakers with protection against interference, having an MDF housing and bass reflexes. On the front panel of the active speaker there are volume, treble and bass controls, a headphone jack and a network indicator. Thanks to this arrangement, the regulators are always at hand, which is very convenient. The frequency of the reproduced frequencies of the system is from 45 to 27000 Hz, power is 2 x 30 W, dimensions are 28/18/21 cm. The system uses separate amplification of frequency bands with a linear phase characteristic according to the Bi-amp circuit, which completely neutralizes the distorting sound The picture is a specific effect of poor stereo panorama, characteristic of budget models. On the rear panel of the device there are connectors for connecting a PC, DVD and MP3 player. The length of the cables between the speakers is about 2.5 meters.

It's always nice to listen to music or watch a good movie with high-quality sound. Today, the choice of audio systems is simply huge, and it is easy for a person who is poorly versed in such technology to get confused. Find out how to choose speakers for home use based on your preferences. The acoustic system must have not only an attractive appearance, but also optimal parameters for specific purposes.

Any speaker system consists of a configuration that can be designated by the numbers 2.0, 2.1, 3.1,5.1, 7.1. The first number in this marking indicates the number of speakers (satellites), and the second indicates the presence of a subwoofer. That is, if the speakers are designated as 2.0, this means that they do not have a separate low-frequency speaker (subwoofer), and the lower bass is built into the speakers themselves.

Dividing the system into main speakers and a subwoofer allows you to get higher quality, surround sound, creating the effect of presence. The more accompanying speakers the system has, the better and more impressive the sound.

Let's look at what types of columns exist:

  1. Computer. The simplest and most budget-friendly PC speakers do not have a subwoofer. There are those that consist of a 2.1, 3.1 system. As a rule, computer speakers are small in size and designed for desktop placement. The speakers can be connected not only to a desktop PC, but also to a laptop, tablet, or smartphone.
  2. Floor-standing. These are more powerful and larger audio systems used in home theaters and large rooms. To reduce vibrations on the floor and walls and make the sound clearer, floor-standing speakers are equipped with special stands made of stone (granite, marble). Cheaper models have rubberized stands. The floor-standing type of acoustics is more sensitive than others and is more demanding on amplifiers.
  3. Ceiling. Not too large speakers placed under the ceiling can be used both as front satellites and as two-channel audio systems. They are suitable for small spaces and are very practical because they take up little space.
  4. On racks. These speakers are placed on the floor, but differ from ordinary floor-standing speakers. They are not large, and their speakers are designed to be installed at a certain height. It is thanks to the correct placement that you can get spectacular, surround sound. The height of the stands in most models is adjustable.
  5. Soundbars. The difference between such acoustics is that all elements and channels are located in one horizontal panel. Externally, the speaker looks primitive and simple, but in terms of sound quality it can surpass 5.1 and 7.1 systems. This effect is achieved thanks to high-tech algorithms that supply signals from the amplifier to the speakers separately. This is one of the most expensive types of home audio systems.
  6. Portable. Usually this is just one column that can work autonomously from 4-5 to 20 hours. Connection with devices occurs via Bluetooth. This type of acoustics is intended for use in a small room or outside the home. Portable speakers have become an excellent solution for recreation; they are loved by young people and travelers. High-quality mobile speakers have quite powerful, clear and spacious sound. Although, of course, this cannot be called a full-fledged audio system.

These are the main types of home speakers that can be purchased today on our market.

Main characteristics and their importance

Large and beautiful-looking speakers may have very weak characteristics. Conversely, compact and unprepossessing ones are capable of surpassing larger systems in power and clarity of sound. The sound quality depends on the technical parameters. To choose truly good speakers, you need to learn to understand the basic performance criteria.

Speaker power

It is worth immediately noting that the power indicator is not an indicator of volume. This factor indicates how long the speaker can sound at maximum volume without distortion, wheezing or other interference. It is important that the power level of the speakers be lower than the power level of the amplifier. Otherwise, the system will very quickly burn out from excessive load.

The parameters distinguish between two types of power - peak and root mean square. Regardless of what type of speakers you choose, you should pay attention to the RMS indicator. It determines how long a speaker can play at high volumes without distortion or overload.

The optimal indicator for home acoustics can be considered the total power of the speakers in the range of 40-70 W.

Number of lanes

This characteristic indicates the number of speakers in the column. For example, small computer speakers most often have only one band. 3.1 systems can consist of 2-way speakers. Three-way audio systems are considered one of the best, where the division is into high, mid and low frequencies. There are also more advanced systems that divide the sound into 4-5 and even 7 channels.

The more bands an acoustic system has, the better and more versatile its sound.

Amplitude-frequency characteristics

Amplitude-frequency response (AFC) is the dependence of the amplitude of sound vibrations at the output on the frequency of the reproduced signal. The frequency response is usually depicted on graphs. The range of these frequencies is displayed in hertz and kilohertz, and any deviations in decibels. In the equipment passport it is indicated in hertz (Hz) and kilohertz (kHz). This is an important indicator, but for a person who does not understand all the intricacies of musical equipment, it is useless.

In simple terms, the smoother the frequency response graph when a speaker sounds, the better. Sudden fluctuations and bursts indicate that the speakers are distorting the sound.

To choose the right audio system based on frequency response parameters, it is better to consult with a specialist.

Audio coding system

Today, there are various digital audio encodings that allow you to reproduce it in volume. First the “stereo” effect appeared, then formats such as Dolby Stereo Surround. These encodings involve dividing the sound into several channels, thereby achieving the effect of presence and complete immersion in the sound.

Not every speaker system is capable of reading and reproducing sound in multi-channel encodings. Single-way speakers can also provide stereo sound, but they will not be able to convey all the luxury of a multi-channel system.

Those who want to listen to audio files in modern surround encodings on their speakers should buy 3.5 or 7-channel speakers and a player that reads formats such as Blu-ray.

Bass reflex

High-quality modern speaker systems are equipped with a bass reflex. This is a kind of pipe or hole located in the speaker housing. The resonance of this element allows you to expand the low-frequency range. In systems consisting of small satellites and a subwoofer, the bass reflex is installed only in the low-frequency speaker.

For small rooms, it is better to choose speakers with a side or front bass reflex placement. In large halls, speakers with side and rear placement of this part are used.

Housing material

Speakers are made from a variety of materials. The quality of the cabinet also affects the sound.

Types of materials from which audio system housings are made:

  • plastic;
  • natural wood;
  • glass;
  • plexiglass;
  • marble or granite;
  • metal.

The most popular today are plastic speakers. Good durable plastic does not distort the sound and is quite suitable for lining speakers. In addition, it is the cheapest material.

The best equipment is considered to be wooden. Natural wood has unique acoustic properties and improves sound. Stone is suitable for large and low-frequency speakers; it muffles bass distortion. Systems made of MDF and chipboard would be a good choice. But glass and metal do not have the best effect on the reproducibility of sound notes. A lot depends on the number of bands, the size of the speakers and the room.

Additional functionality

Additional features include wireless control (using a remote control), as well as the ability to configure each speaker separately. Such options are present in more expensive models.

Some systems are equipped with a display that shows all the current settings. A very convenient extension that allows you to configure the speakers not only auditorily, but also visually.

Some speakers may have an additional wall mount. This is very convenient for those who have a small computer desk (if the system is purchased specifically for a PC).

If we compare wireless speakers and regular ones, the latter clearly win in terms of sound quality. Despite the convenience of portable audio systems, the wireless signal loses some of the power and purity of the sound.

Rating

So, now you know how to choose speakers wisely, taking into account their parameters and characteristics. We present a rating of the best home models with optimal parameters and good reviews.

But we should not forget that everything depends on the personal preferences of each user. And if speakers are needed only for light musical accompaniment while working on a PC, then there is no need to buy expensive ones. Whereas for music lovers, it makes sense to fork out for a more “sophisticated” audio system.

A computer without peripheral devices is an almost useless device. To make full use of its potential, we must connect, for example, a keyboard, mouse, monitor and speakers. In this TOP 10 ranking, we will pay attention to the last of the listed elements. What are the best speakers for your computer? Buy cheap ones or maybe it’s better to pay extra and choose something more advanced? Let's find out!

Good speakers for your computer – what to look for

Of course, with speakers, as with any other audio equipment, the most important thing is sound quality. In this regard, we recommend that you read reviews of the model in which you are interested. By reading the full reviews, you can get all the relevant information about the sound quality. Our review aims to provide a quick answer, which computer speakers to buy in this price category.

In addition to sound quality, other issues are important. Firstly, the design and type of speakers. Here we focus on columns 2.0 and 2.1. What do these numbers mean? Speakers 2.0 are two, usually quite small or medium-sized speakers, in which all the necessary elements are located - connectors, amplifier, knobs, buttons and all sensors (elements that directly generate sound pressure, that is, sound). In turn, 2.1 means that the set has two small speakers, which are usually equipped with tweeters (sometimes also mid-level), as well as a separate subwoofer, that is, a low-sound speaker.

What are the differences in practice? Most often, speakers are equipped with an additional subwoofer, which generates more powerful, softer low frequencies (so-called bass). This, however, does not mean that 2.1 computer speakers are better than 2.0 speakers. A number of other factors are really important, such as the quality of the components, the quality of the case, the design of the case, the number of speakers, etc. Good 2.0 speakers, despite the lack of a subwoofer, can play much better than a 2.1 set.

Majority cheap computer speakers have a wired connection - as a rule, we connect them to a sound card or amplifier using a 3.5 mm mini-jack cable (the plug is the same as for headphones). If you want to additionally listen to music from your phone, tablet or laptop wirelessly, then you should pay attention to speakers with Bluetooth support. If sound quality is a priority, then choose speakers with a digital input, such as fiber optic. Many computer motherboards already have such outputs, but it is better to use sound cards and DACs.

Good 2.0 and 2.1 speakers for a computer should also have volume, bass and treble controls, as well as the ability to switch sound sources directly on the case or on the remote control.

Here is a selection of inexpensive and good ones speaker systems 2.0 and 2.1 for computer.

The best computer speakers are

Classic computer speakers are a versatile and complete solution for music, games and movies, but if you're looking for something that will truly offer high-quality sound, then it's better to save some money and buy monitors like the M-AUDIO BX5 D3 or Yamaha HS5. When connected to a good amplifier, they play simply great and will satisfy even beginning music lovers.

Of the presented speakers, it is worth highlighting the Microlab Solo6C, first of all, for its sound quality, and if you want something cheap with a subwoofer, then take the Microlab FC330. The small and cheap Fenda R30BT speaker systems are also interesting.

Choosing speakers for your computer is easy, but if you don’t want to constantly hear sounds from the bucket, then you need to approach this issue wisely.

For an office computer (documents, Internet), any of the cheapest speakers will be enough, as they say (to accompany the work process). But I still recommend limiting yourself to the SVEN and Genius brands, since even their inexpensive models have acceptable quality.
Computer speakers Genius SP-U120

For a multimedia computer (movies, simple games), it is better to take speakers in a wooden case from the SVEN brand with a total power of 10-20 W. The sound quality will be significantly higher.
Computer speakers SVEN SPS-619

For a large space or if you like powerful sound, it is better to take more powerful speakers (40-60 W).
Computer speakers SVEN SPS-611S

If you love music (especially classical or rock), then Edifier or Microlab speakers with a total power of 40-60 W will provide you with more realistic sound in the mid-high range and soft transparent bass.
Computer speakers Edifier R1100

For games, you can take the SVEN 2.1 speaker system (with a subwoofer) with a total power of 40-60 W, which will provide powerful driving bass.
Computer speakers SVEN SPS-820

Well, for a home theater, a multi-channel 5.1 system made by Creative, Microlab, Logitech or Sven would be an excellent choice.
Computer speakers Logitech Z506

As for laptops, there are several options available. If you plan to use speakers where there is an outlet, then take inexpensive 5-10 W computer speakers in a plastic case made by SVEN or Genius. If you want to use speakers outdoors or in other places where there is no outlet, then you need mobile speakers powered by USB with a total power of 4-6 W. Recommended manufacturers SVEN, Genius and Defender.

2. Purpose of columns

Office - inexpensive stereo speakers (2.0), with low volume and sound quality. Suitable primarily for reproducing operating system sounds that help in everyday work. Sometimes they can be used to watch videos on the Internet or create a light background music.

Home - stereo speakers (2.0, 2.1) of average volume and quite acceptable sound quality. They are universal and suitable for music, movies and games.

Gaming – multi-channel audio system (5.1) to create surround sound that helps avid fans navigate games.

Home theater – multi-channel audio system (5.1, 7.1) for watching movies with multi-channel sound. It can have several inputs, so you can simultaneously connect a computer and a video player to one audio system.

Portable – small, portable stereo or mono speakers for laptops and other mobile devices. They usually have low power and can be powered from a laptop’s USB connector or built-in battery.

3. Speaker manufacturers

High-quality speaker systems for high-tech computers are produced by Creative and Logitech. But they are also the most expensive.

I would especially like to note the speakers from Sven, which have an excellent price/quality ratio across the entire price range.

The inexpensive Defender brand is also popular now, but the choice of speakers from this manufacturer needs to be approached more carefully, since their range includes both successful and not so successful models.

If you need inexpensive speakers for your office computer, pay attention to the brands: Genius and Sven.

High-quality portable speakers are produced by: BBK, Creative, HP, Jabra, JBL, Microlab, Logitech, Philips.

Cheaper brands in the portable speakers segment include: A4Tech, Defender, Genius, Sven.

4. Warranty

Speakers from the best brands, as a rule, are of good quality, rarely fail, and are guaranteed for 1-2 years, depending on how expensive the model is. Speakers from cheaper brands are not of such good quality and are more likely to fail within the first year of use. Therefore, it is advisable that they have a warranty of at least a year. For the cheapest office speakers, sellers can only give a 3-6 month warranty.

5. Number of channels

The number of channels is determined by the number of speakers in the speaker system. Office speakers usually have 2 channels and correspond to the type of 2.0 speaker system.

Home speakers can have 2 channels or 2 channels and a subwoofer, which corresponds to the type of 2.1 speaker system. A subwoofer is a special speaker with a large diameter speaker to reproduce low frequencies, which gives more powerful and deeper bass.

The simplest speaker system for games and home theater has 5 channels and a subwoofer, which corresponds to the type of 5.1 speaker system.

Please note that the computer must support the required number of channels and have the appropriate number of audio connectors to connect the speaker system. If the motherboard has only 3 3.5 mm jacks, then only a 2.0 or 2.1 speaker system can be connected to it. If there are 5, 6 sockets - a speaker system from 2.0 to 7.1.

The motherboard can also have a digital optical output, with which you can connect a good audio system that has a similar input, which is convenient and will provide high sound quality. If your motherboard does not have enough audio connectors and digital audio output, but you still want to connect a 5.1 or 7.1 multi-channel system, you will have to purchase a separate sound card.

Portable audio systems can have 2 or 1 speaker.

6. Power supply

Office and home speakers designed for desktop computers are connected to a 220 V outlet and consume little electricity. Multichannel audio systems may consume more power, depending on the total power output.

Portable speakers that are powered from the USB port of a laptop can be taken with you to nature where there is no outlet. And speakers with their own battery can be connected to a smartphone or MP3 player.

You can also use ordinary small but more powerful speakers that plug into a 220 V outlet as portable ones. This can be useful, for example, for conducting audio presentations from your laptop in classrooms.

7. Speaker power

The speaker system must have sufficient power to provide high-quality sound at medium and high volumes. The power of the speaker system can be indicated in total for the entire system (for example, 20 W) or separately for each speaker (for example, 2x10 W).

Office speakers have a power of 2-6 W per speaker. A power of 2 W is only sufficient for operating system sounds. In order for the speakers to be used for music and movies, it is advisable to buy speakers of at least 4 W. 6 W speakers can be used for presentations in a small office or listening to music in a noisy company.

Home speakers should be 10-30 watts per speaker. It all depends on preference. If you don’t like playing music loudly, then 10-15 W per speaker would be optimal. If you like loud sound - 20-30 W. High power is only needed if you want to annoy your neighbors.

In principle, gaming or home theater speakers are subject to the same power requirements as for home speakers. For a multi-channel audio system (5.1, 7.1), the total power is usually taken into account. The total power of modern 5.1 format speaker systems has a fairly large range of 50-500 W. Here again it all depends on personal preferences and financial capabilities. For undemanding users, a 5.1 system with a power of 75 W is enough. If you like loud sound, then take a speaker system with a power of about 150 W. Acoustics with a power of about 250 W will cost significantly more and will be suitable for a large private house. And a 500 W system can kill an elephant...

Portable speakers have a power of 0.5-4 W per speaker. The power of 0.5-1 W per speaker is too little, since they will not sound louder than the built-in speakers of the laptop. If the power comes from USB, I recommend purchasing portable speakers with a power of 2-3 W, if from a wall outlet - 4-6 W per speaker.

8. Number of stripes

The number of bars corresponds to the number of speakers in the column. If there is one speaker, the system is single-way, if there are two – two-way, three – three-way.

Adding additional speakers is done to divide the frequency range between them. Each speaker reproduces its own frequency range, which makes the sound more detailed and high-quality. First of all, high frequencies are separated, for the reproduction of which a small speaker is installed. In a three-way system, mid frequencies are also separated from low frequencies. It is advisable that the speakers have at least two speakers.

A bass reflex is a special tube in the speaker body that is used to enhance the bass. It can be located at the back or front.

If you like powerful bass, then it is advisable that the speakers have a bass reflex.

Most speakers have decorative panels with a stretched fabric or grille that protects the speakers. But some speaker models do not have such panels.

It is advisable to have panels, as the speakers can easily be dented by a careless touch.

11. Controls

One of the speakers or subwoofer may have a power button, volume controls, high and low frequencies. They can be on the front, side or back panel.

It is more convenient when the controls are located in front, but in principle there is no need to constantly use them, since the volume can be adjusted on the computer, on the keyboard, using the video player’s control panel or the speakers themselves, which is present in most models in the middle and higher price ranges. In addition, these regulators wear out over time, so it is not advisable to use them intensively.

Using wireless remote controls, you can usually adjust more parameters, for example, switching inputs from a computer to a TV and vice versa. And some wired remote controls can connect headphones.

12. Connectors

The 2.0 speaker system has 1 3.5 mm mini-jack for connecting to a computer, the 2.1 system has 2 such plugs, and the 5.1 system. – 3.

To connect to a video player, a multichannel system may have RCA (tulip) connectors.

The system can also have coaxial and optical connectors, with which you can connect both a computer and a video player that have similar connectors.

All speakers also have connectors and corresponding cables for connecting to an amplifier, which is built into either one of the speakers (in a 2.0 system) or a subwoofer (in 2.1, 5.1 systems). Instead of tulips for all or some connections, speakers may have spring or screw connectors into which the wires are inserted directly.

This type of connection has a number of advantages:

  • better contact compared to tulips, which can break
  • wire without a plug is easier to pull through various openings and openings
  • the wire can be easily replaced with any other desired length

Modern multi-channel systems allow you to connect several devices to them at once. Think in advance about how and to which devices you will connect the audio system and what connectors you will need for this. For example, a video player can be connected with a digital optical cable, a computer with minijacks, and a TV with tulips or in any other order. On manufacturers' websites you can often find instructions with recommended connection diagrams for various devices. You can also consult with the seller or on the relevant forum.

In addition to the indicated connectors, the speakers may have a headphone jack, which is very convenient, and an audio input to which you can connect, for example, a smartphone or MP3 player to play music without a computer.

13. Wire length

The length of the wires, unfortunately, is usually not indicated in the speaker specifications. If the speakers will be located far from the system unit or you plan to spread them around the room, then try looking for this information on the manufacturer’s website, ask the seller or those who have already purchased the same model. Also in this case, it is better if the speakers are connected with wires without connectors or with very popular connectors (minijack or tulip), which can be easily purchased separately of the required length.

14. Amplitude-frequency characteristics

The parameters of the speakers may indicate such characteristics as the range of reproduced frequencies, signal-to-noise ratio and some others. The human ear is capable of detecting frequencies in the range of 20Hz-20kHz. If the lower value is higher (40-50 Hz), then the bass is lost. If the upper value is lower (15-18 kHz), then high frequencies are lost. If, on the contrary, a wider range is indicated, for example 15-25000, then this is just a publicity stunt, since you will not hear these frequencies anyway. However, the parameters indicated by manufacturers do not always correspond to reality. Therefore, you can find out the actual characteristics and evaluate the sound quality only with the help of tests, the results of which can be found on the Internet based on the speaker model. The same applies to other parameters, which I do not recommend focusing on.

15. Audio coding system

Some speaker systems support certified audio encoding systems such as Dolby, DTS, THX. If you have a home theater to which you want to connect new acoustics, then take an interest in this topic on the relevant forums.

16. Additional functionality

Some speaker systems can operate autonomously as media centers. They may have a USB connector, a card reader, to which you can connect flash drives, memory cards and play music from them directly without using a computer. Some models have a radio, alarm clock, and information display, which makes them much more functional.

Some speakers and portable speakers may have Bluetooth, which allows you to play music from your smartphone wirelessly, which is sometimes convenient.

17. Speaker size

Pay careful attention to the size of the speakers. It is almost impossible to determine the actual size from a photograph and often this discrepancy is huge. Check the dimensions in the specifications on the seller's or manufacturer's website. Take a ruler, imagine these dimensions and determine where and how the speakers will be placed so that there are no surprises later.

For example, my speakers are only about 100x160x150mm, so they fit easily behind the monitor and don't take up extra space.

On the other hand, the larger the size, the better the sound.

18. Housing material

Cheap speakers usually have a plastic body. Such speakers sound worse and can rattle even at medium volume.

Expensive speakers may have a wooden body.

A compromise option is speakers in MDF housings, which sound good, look solid, do not rattle, and at the same time have a low cost.

Some high-tech speaker systems may include small speakers (satellites) in a metal housing. It looks stylish and compact, but has its price.

Speakers made from MDF are optimal in terms of price/quality ratio. However, there are quite decent speaker systems made of high-quality plastic, but they are more expensive.

19. Column color

The most versatile speakers are black or black-silver, as they go well with other computer devices, modern household appliances and interiors.

As for MDF speakers, in addition to black and silver, they can have a color and texture that imitates various types of wood (oak, beech, ash, etc.). At first glance this may seem interesting. But the fact is that it is difficult to choose a color that will match your table or furniture, since the colors in the picture are greatly distorted and often speakers from an online store may arrive in a completely different shade.

But the most important thing is that you like the speakers.

Portable speakers can have completely different colors and, in principle, this does not matter much, since they will be used in different, often cheerful, environments. So choose according to your taste.

20. Price

Here I will list prices below which high-quality speakers should not cost.

  • Office, portable – $10
  • Home 2.0 – $25
  • Home 2.1 – $45
  • Gaming 5.1 – $75

21. Setting up filters in the online store

  1. Go to the “Speakers” or “Acoustics” section on the seller’s website.
  2. Select recommended manufacturers.
  3. Speaker type: stationary or portable.
  4. Number of channels: 2.0, 2.1 or 5.1.
  5. Power range.
  6. Other parameters and functions that are important to you.
  7. View items starting with the cheapest ones.
  8. Select several models you like in terms of design and compare them by size, number and type of connectors, and additional functionality.
  9. Buy the model with the best functionality.

Thus, you will receive speakers with the best price/quality ratio that meet your requirements at the lowest possible cost.
