In Linux it is better to use a special swap partition, but in Android a regular file is used.


Using swap on your phone can shorten its lifespan, so it's better to create swap on your SD card.

If this fails, you can simply replace it. Another warning: if you use Swap from time to time, do not delete its file.

Erasing and re-creating the swap partition if necessary will result in fragmentation, garbage collection, and slow write performance from the flash drive.

The tool I'll be using now is Busybox. It is a collection of useful commands contained in one program. We launch the console with the command:

  • $ adb shell

Then - su - to gain full access to the system. First we create a swap file. I chose a location in the sd-ext partition, which is used to move the application from the internal memory to the SD card.

I'm using Link2SD and its mount point: sd-ext - w/data/sdext2/, so I go to that directory under the console and issue the command:

  • # dd if = /dev/zero of = number of swap files = 50 bs = 1024000

The dd command will copy 50 MB from the device that generates bytes to the page file. Now you need to prepare the file for use as swap.

And at the end of the installation swap.

To check whether swap is used, issue the free command.

To disable, the system must transfer data to RAM. If the data does not match, the system will stop.

You can try to close applications that are currently running in RAM to free up space for data sharing. The only reliable way to disable swap is to restart your phone.

I turn swap on and off with a few clicks. Of course, as I wrote earlier, if you plan to use swap in the future, don't delete the file.

If your Android uses an init.dog directory, you can create a startup script that will mount the page file when the system starts.

Personally, I only enable swap when I know I'll be using power hungry apps and want to continue to be able to multitask.

  • if the partition with ext2 is not used for its intended purpose, most likely the device is not rooted (we correct the situation with the UnlockRootPro application or any similar one, at our discretion).
