D link 620 firmware zyxel keenetic. Firmware from the dd-wrt web interface

To have a common storage for all home computers (and now smartphones) for music, movies, and some common files that you need. The idea of building another computer on something like Atom was discarded after some thought - it would take a long time and be relatively expensive, although of course it would be interesting. Therefore, I decided to look towards ready-made devices with the possibility of flashing, specifically routers that support dd-wrt/openwrt and so on.

First I settled on the D-Link DIR-320 - which has already become a classic option for creating a home NAS, organizing a small full-fledged network and solving other similar problems. Pros: very reasonable price, has been on the market for a long time and is already densely covered with all sorts of manuals for alteration and modification. However, it turned out that the store did not have it, so I bought DIR-620- a more modern version of the 320. Otherwise, there is not much difference - the DIR-620 also has the ability to flash third-party firmware, is equipped with a USB output (USB host, to be precise) and costs about the same money (in my case it was even 70 rubles cheaper).

Alternative firmware for DIR-620

Since I didn’t find any positive reviews about the standard firmware of the router (mine had version 1.21), but, on the contrary, I found a lot of negative ones (about all versions up to 1.21 inclusive), I didn’t even bother setting it up and immediately started looking for alternative firmware for DIR- 620. There were enough of them, I settled on three - dd-wrt, zyxel keenetic And openwrt. After familiarizing myself with the theory, I installed only dd-wrt, and that’s what I use. I found OpenWRT too late - I just read about it, but didn’t try it. I thought about installing Zuxel Keenetic in case I don’t figure out dd-wrt - it wasn’t useful. A collection of firmware, bootloader updates and instructions for flashing are collected on the website.

Zyxel Keenetic firmware for DIR-620

The Zyxel Keenetic hardware is almost similar to the D-Link DIR-620 and therefore the latter can be flashed with the firmware from the first (the original one in case of a small alteration - you need to solder a resistor to the board or a modified one - in this case no alteration is required). The advantages of this firmware include where everything is simple and clear; , the presence of a built-in torrent client ( transmission-daemon) and dlna server ( minidlna). I’ll say right away that the latter is not needed if various media content from the NAS will be opened on the computer and is needed if there is a desire to connect, for example, a TV to the NAS (which naturally should support dlna). Why didn't I flash this firmware? Firstly, the beauty of the web interface is only needed during setup, i.e. ideally - once (and I prefer to configure via the console), secondly - although there is a possibility (only for the “full-fledged” Keenetic) - there are quite a few packages, thirdly - this firmware is closed and there is a rather unpleasant connection with it history - recently there have been a lot of DIR-620 flashed in Keenetic (and it is also not clear whether they will check the originality of the hardware in the future - it all depends on the goodwill of Zyxel). So I settled on dd-wrt.

Firmware dd-wrt for DIR-620

For DIR-620, the firmware assembly from a router with similar hardware is suitable - Asus RT-N13U. The main advantages are open source code, which entails the ability to independently assemble the firmware and the presence of a large community where you can always get help. A wealth of settings available both through the web interface and from the console (ssh is installed out of the box), the ability to easily install additional software through a package manager from repositories (, dc++ client, samba, and for example, which is coupled with a USB hub and/or free LAN ports will allow you to connect to a router). Naturally, the same as in the case of Keenetic, to the router via USB. The disadvantages include the rather ascetic web interface, except that I didn’t encounter any other problems during the month of use. You can get acquainted with dd-wrt using .

How to flash DIR-620 with dd-wrt firmware

For the described tasks (downloading torrents, network drive, DC++), in my opinion, the following order of firmware is best suited (for a device with factory firmware):

  • First, to be able to upload firmware to the router via tftp without having to convert them; With bootloader version 3.3.2 there may be a problem with the WAN port not being enabled. It is very easy to fix, how to fix it - .
  • Then take , which has built-in support for ext2, ext3, fat and swap (without a swap partition, the transmission is very unstable and you need to constantly monitor so that there are no more than two or three downloads);
  • Download this firmware to the router,

Instructions

A brief overview of what we get after flashing the router:

  • Full-fledged Zyxel Keenetic in DIR-620 shell
  • The router works fully: Wi-Fi works, all the LEDs on the front panel work correctly, the USB port works
  • It was visually noted that the response and loading speed of Internet pages, as well as the speed of other Internet-related applications (precisely at the level of the communication channel with servers) have improved.
  • IP-TV works (including via Wi-Fi channel)
  • The USB port is designed for printers, USB modems, external hard drives (with and without additional external power supply), flash drives
  • Support for FAT32 and NTFS hard drive file systems
  • The drive is accessed via a “Network Share (Windows)” or via the FTP protocol (anonymously or through configured accounts).
  • The print server is running
  • It is possible to connect a USB hub to the USB port of the router, and connect several “devices” to the USB hub (for example, a printer and two hard drives at the same time)
  • The torrent client built into the firmware works (can download files to an external storage device connected to the router)
  • You can access an external storage device connected to the router and control the operation of the built-in torrent client via a local network and the Internet (if you have a white IP) - which in turn makes it possible, for example, to add new torrent downloads from anywhere on the planet, where there is Internet!

Flaws:

  • One significant drawback was noticed, it concerns the built-in torrent client in the router
  • This disadvantage is that the download speed per torrent cannot exceed more than 1 MB (1024 KB) per second (i.e. per download stream)
  • There is an item in the settings of the built-in torrent client where you can increase this limit, but again, a value of more than 1024 KB is not accepted

Instructions for flashing the router in ZyXEL Keenetic

Important information: You do all actions and manipulations with the router to change its hardware and software levels at your own peril and risk. Full responsibility for the operation of the router after such actions lies solely with the owner of the router! These procedures with the router should be done by a person who has experience, knowledge and understands why and why he needs all this!
This instruction is for informational purposes only and does not encourage you to take any actions with your devices!
Due to the fact that the router manufacturer D-Link has updated the hardware of the router, you can only reflash routers of a certain hardware revision, see the picture below and compare your marking label with the picture, if the revisions match, you can reflash your router.

Router firmware procedure (without opening):

1) Download the archive containing two firmware dir-620_keenetic.zip (7.64MB)

2) If your router is not flashed with the latest software version (1.2.102-20110518), then first flash the router with firmware DIR_620-1.2.102-20110518.fwz

5) Then in the address bar of the browser you need to enter the address http://192.168.1.1/

When prompted for a login and password, you must enter the following credentials:
Login: admin
Password: 1234

Let's say a huge thank you to deadc0de for this creation! (author of the firmware)

Instructions for setting up a router using ZyXEL Keenetic firmware

1. Setting up an Internet connection:

2. Setting up a wireless network (Wi-Fi):

3. Setting up the network organization (range of issued IP addresses):

4. Setting up routing:

5. Configuring port forwarding (port forwarding):
This function is necessary for the correct operation of the file exchange program (GreyLink DC++).

6. Setting up a file sharing program
Program settings for working through additional equipment (via a router). This is just an example of what the settings should look like to work through a router; the settings may vary depending on the router configuration.

Important: For the program to work, you may need to configure your firewall/firewall/antivirus. We recommend setting exceptions for the “greylink.exe” program.

If for some reason it was not possible to configure the file sharing program correctly, and there were also difficulties setting up the firewall/firewall/antivirus, then there is another option for setting up the file sharing program (but it is not the most optimal and correct). In the program’s connection settings, uncheck the “Active mode (allow incoming connections)” item as shown in the figure below:

DIR-620 is a good router from D-Link from the lower price segment, and it supports software from other manufacturers. In this article, we'll look at how to install the DIR-620, both company-provided and third-party ones.
Immediately after purchasing the Dlink dir-620, I recommend updating the firmware

Typology of routers

It has been refined and changed several times by the company, and the manufacturers themselves deliberately indicate confusing information on the website so that only the official DIR-620 firmware can be installed without problems (thus, the company is fighting against those who like to install Zyxel software on D-Link).

Router revisions:

  • Firmware for DIR-620 rev. A-AE1A
  • Firmware for DIR-620 rev. B–B1E
  • Firmware for DIR-620 rev. C–C1E
  • Firmware for DIR-620 rev. D – (more precisely, DF1A)
  • Firmware for DIR-620 rev. S - SG12.

The router revision is indicated on the bottom, on a special sticker, in the H/W column.

If the firmware is D-Link DIR-620

  • For revision version A - 1.2.1 and older;
  • For revision version C - 1.0.3 and older;
  • For revision version D - 1.3.4 and older.

Then it is updated several times, first to newer versions, and only then to the latest.

We update the router to the latest firmware

For this:

  • Go to the company’s server ftp.dlink.ru;
  • We found ourselves in the pub/ directory, now we move to Router/, select the equipment and the DIR-620/ prefix (not to be confused with the others, there are no firmwares there), and in this folder open Firmware/;
  • Select the revision version indicated on the modem;
  • Go to the Old folder and update sequentially until the firmware of the D-Link DIR-620 router matches the “youngest” file. (in case of such an update, start immediately with step 3).
  • Download the latest available update. Now the firmware for the D-Link DIR-620 router is on your computer.

How to flash DIR-620? We carry out a “pre-flight check”. Router:

  • The wireless Wi-Fi network is not shared with other devices (laptops, phones, tablets, etc.).
  • USB devices are not connected;
  • Disconnected from the provider cable (Internet slot is empty);
  • Connects to a computer with a cable (included, Wi-Fi connection is not allowed);
  • Connected to power supply;
  • It's time to reflash the D-Link DIR-620 router! We go to the browser and go to the modem settings menu.
  • The system will ask for a login and password, if you have not changed it yet, then by default it is admin for all fields.
  • Further, the sequence of actions will differ, depending on the revision and installed firmware (we list below 3 possible options):
  • Select “System” in the menu on the right -> “Software Update”.
  • “Configure manually” -> “System” -> “Software update”.
  • “Advanced settings” -> Open the drop-down menu next to the “System” button (right arrow) -> “Software update”

Improving functionality using Zyxel

Despite the company's active opposition, the D-Link DIR-620 firmware may be from another supplier, Zyxel or Asus.

However, it will only work if revision A1 is indicated in the H/W field, and the value 1.0.6 is in the F/W field (the company quickly “deprived” the modem of the vulnerability, so newer releases most likely will not support Zyxel).
At the same time, the question may arise: why risk the equipment and the warranty of installing non-native software on it?

  • Modest functionality and unreliability of native software;
  • A slight increase in the loading speed of Internet pages and the speed of various applications;
  • A noticeable expansion of functionality - USB ports support external drives, 3G and 4G modems, etc.
  • Availability of a built-in torrent client (though with a speed limit of only 1024 kb/s).

This cunning trick is possible due to the fact that the hardware used in the DIR-620 is approximately the same and, in general, they differ only in price and software. The update is carried out in 2 ways - with opening the internals and without using a screwdriver, based on modified firmware from deadc0de. We will consider the second one, as it is simpler and does not require a lot of time, effort and active work with a soldering iron. Naturally, installing such software is done at your own risk, since in this case you can damage the router and lose the warranty.

Firmware D-Link DIR-620 Zyxel:

WATCH THE VIDEO

  • The router firmware is updated to the latest one from the official website (according to the algorithm from the previous section).
  • Patched firmware from Zyxel can be found on the Internet or downloaded from the link http://1drv.ms/1RNBbUJ.
  • We install it in the same way as the official firmware.
  • After .
  • Repeat step 4 from installing the official firmware.
  • To enter the settings menu, you will need a username - admin, and a modified password from the standard account - 1234.
  • The output is D-Link DIR-620 Zyxel firmware!

Now you know how to flash the D-Link DIR-620 firmware.

The Dlink dir-620 wireless router allows you to create a wireless network in your home and office. A special feature of this model (among the inexpensive router models) is the ability to connect a 3G/CDMA/WiMAX* adapter, which allows users to access the Internet wherever there is a 3G/CDMA/WiMAX network. The device supports wireless connections at speeds up to 300 Mbps with 802.11n devices and is backward compatible with 802.11b/g devices.

Immediately after purchasing the Dlink dir-620, I recommend updating the firmware so that you don’t later get the impression that Dlink is unreliable network equipment. First, look at what version of the software is on your network device and pay attention to the revision version H/W Ver.: (revision version) (in this example A). You can do this by looking at the sticker on the router body.

The next step is to set up a network connection on your computer/laptop automatic acquisition of an IP address and DNS server. Then, we connect the router using a patch cord (don't forget to connect power to Dlink).

Attention!!! To update the firmware of the Dlink dir-620 router, you need to connect it to your computer using a network cable. You should not connect using Wi-Fi.

If the router is using firmware 1.2.1, then first update it to version 1.2.16 from the Old folder - firmware file only_for_FW_1.2.1_DIR_620-1.2.16-20110127.fwz This firmware is ONLY suitable for the DIR-620 router hardware revision A. Use of this firmware with another revision of the device will lead to its failure.

We launch the browser, enter the IP address of the router in the address bar, by default it is 192.168.0.1 enter Login admin and Password admin.

After this, we get to the router’s Web interface, where you can see what version of the software is installed.

If your software version is lower than version 1.3.3 (at the time of writing this is the latest firmware), then you need to flash your router to the latest firmware. The first thing you need to do is download the firmware from the official website. Please note that you should download the revision that corresponds to your router; an incorrect revision can lead to failure of the Dlink dir-620.

The update occurs as follows: go to the router’s Web interface (described above), then “ System-Software Update"and indicate where the downloaded update is located and click "Update".

ATTENTION!!! During the firmware installation, you should never turn off the Dlink Dir-620 or your computer/laptop; this may result in the router not working.

During the update process, you will be asked to change the password, enter the password twice and click " Save» .

It has long been no secret that chip (microcircuit) manufacturers design and manufacture reference boards for their designs. And then everyone who is not too lazy OEM this product and releases it under their own trade name. Manufacturers of finished products also receive an SDK. As a result, we get several products that are completely different both from the outside and from the web shell. But having the same hardware.

Attention! By updating your router (D-Link DIR-620 router) with third-party firmware, you automatically lose your warranty. Everything you do is done at your own peril and risk.

If you decide to update the firmware of the D-Link DIR-620 router, then install at least a radiator
If you have already flashed the firmware for the fourth release (1.00(BFW.4)D0), then immediately roll back the uBOOT bootloader and downgrade the firmware to the third release

I have already written about such close relatives:

  • D-Link DIR-320 and Asus WL-500 Gpv2;
  • NetGear WNR3500L and Asus RT-N16;
  • DOM.RU WNR612-2EMRUS and NetGear WNR612v2.

It's the turn of the next tandem D-Link DIR-620 and ZyXEL Keenetic.

Why flash the D-Link DIR-620 router.

As a rule, flashing is done to obtain greater functionality and greater stability. Unfortunately, the firmware from D-Link for the D-Link DIR-620 router is no different.
But the firmware for ZyXEL Keenetic is quite the opposite. Most likely this is due to the fact that it is written in St. Petersburg by our programmers. And it is perfectly suited for domestic conditions. Read reviews on the Internet about the DIR-620 and ZyXEL Keenetic router and a lot will become clear to you. In a word, the firmware for ZyXEL Keenetic turned out to be very successful. And it makes sense to use it on the DIR-620 router. Moreover, the D-Link DIR-620 router is noticeably cheaper.

Main advantages of ZyXEL Keenetic

  • Stable firmware, stable connection;
  • A more visual (convenient) interface in my opinion;
  • Built-in torrent client, that is, you download and distribute torrents using a router (if you connect an external drive via a USB connector);
  • Built-in SAMBA server, that is, you get a small NAS drive (if you connect an external drive via a USB connector). In other words, you get access to the contents of the disk over the network;
  • Plus the ability to install additional software (if you connect an external drive via a USB connector). For example, a DLNA server to watch movies directly on your TV (most modern LCD and LED TVs have this capability).

Fly in the ointment of the D-Link DIR-620 router

The D-Link DIR-620 router and ZyXEL Keenetic still have some minor hardware differences. Therefore, it will not be possible to directly upload firmware from ZyXEL Keenetic. Initially, many even suggested arming yourself with a soldering iron (well, not a hammer) and modifying the hardware of the D-Link DIR-620 router to the ZyXEL Keenetic state. But then good people modified the firmware and this instruction was born.

Introduction

First of all, you should be well aware that by flashing the D-Link DIR-620 router in ZyXEL Keenetic you automatically lose the warranty and that by flashing we can damage your router. If you don't care about the warranty, at least take care of an uninterruptible power supply. For those who are not afraid, read on.

Some notes on the firmware of the D-Link DIR-620 router in ZyXEL Keenetic

  • We flash only via “wire”, that is, we use a patch cord connected to any LAN port. All settings of the computer’s network adapter are by default, that is, to automatically obtain an address, etc.
  • Firmware ***.fwz are intended for the interface of the D-Link DIR-620 router, that is, for a non-flashed router.
  • The ***.bin firmware is intended for the ZyXEL Keenetic interface, that is, for a re-flashed router.
  • Unmodified (original) firmware from ZyXEL Keenetic cannot be uploaded to the D-Link DIR-620 router, since Wi-Fi and the indicators on the front panel will stop working due to slight differences in the hardware of these routers.
