The purchase was the result of yet another long and painful struggle on the topic of “the optimal set of gadgets.” This year I have to move to study in relatively warm European regions for a couple of years, which has several consequences. You can carry Note 5 in your trouser pocket in the warm season (see story), but this process does not cause delight; I wanted something smaller. To take notes at lectures, I bought an iPad Pro with a stylus, after which there was a desire to unify the zoo of ecosystems and return to the iPhone. The budget allowed us to take everything, including the basic 7 Plus, but, as usual, a toad intervened.

I didn’t want to take the “pluses” (at least) because:
a) expensive;
b) and so there is an iPad;
c) they are healthy (unjustifiably, in my opinion, Note 5 is smaller with a larger diagonal);
d) the only type of crime common in the future place of residence is pickpocketing, so I didn’t really want to buy an expensive device with the risk of losing it.

An ordinary seven for its current 36-37 thousand looked like a pretty good option, but to the toad even this seemed like too much of a waste. As a result, at the final stage the choice was between different modifications, the 32 GB six released for third world countries for 24 thousand and the restored 6 Plus for 28-29. The latter still seems like a pretty good option to me, with excellent battery life, good screen, camera, etc. But big.

The power is more than enough and will most likely last for another couple of years, considering that playing heavy games on such a screen is not a task for the faint of heart, and you shouldn’t expect any virtual reality with such a resolution. But at the same time, from the point of view of any synthetic benchmarks, in terms of ruble money, it probably destroys the plus/minus of almost everything that is on the market.

What's not to like? Weaknesses, shortcomings.

The camera performance in the dark is worse compared to both the Nexus 5X and Note 5. They physically have a larger matrix, and the second one also has an optical stabilizer; in low light conditions this makes a fundamental difference in quality. But I was quite ready for this. Another question is that the quality of color rendering is, for my taste, better than both of the devices listed above. And I don’t believe in harsh post-processing of photos from a phone, pulling RAWs into Lightroom, etc. - this kills the whole idea of mobile photography.

What do you miss about it?

One of the realistic wishes is to quickly launch the camera by double pressing a button, like on the Nexus 5X and Samsung. In the summer this is not very important, although it would still be more convenient, but in the winter it allows you not to take off your gloves. Otherwise, everything fits perfectly into the concept of reasonable sufficiency. From the slightly less realistic ones, it would be great to get moisture protection, but, probably, this is no longer so easy to do on the current chassis.

What features do you use often? What features do you use occasionally? What functions do you not use at all?

A few dialers, mail, quite a lot of browser and instant messengers, all sorts of alarm clocks, calendars, calculators. Maps if necessary, all sorts of transport applications. Camera, Yandex.Music. A little reading, that's what the iPad is for. While Siri is not enough, it’s hard for me to get used to talking to the phone. Maybe over time I’ll buy a watch and get used to it.

Did the device have to be repaired?

No. But there is one important plus: the screen and glass are two different parts, therefore maintainability is higher and the cost is lower. It’s hard to compare with now, this was already a year and a half or two ago. It didn’t slow down then, so there is no fundamental difference in this part, the camera has definitely become better and the battery life is much more pleasant. With the current difference in price of about three thousand (especially taking into account the difference of 16 GB for the SE versus 32 for the SE), the fingerprint sensor is worse, and much worse. On the iPhone I haven’t had a single problem with operation yet; with Samsung there was a constant war of “attach the finger is correct." But we must give Note 5 and Samsung their due - with the seventh Android, battery life has become better, and there are a little less problems with the fingerprint.

What else can you say?

In my opinion, the iPad 2017 is two excellent devices from Apple in terms of the combination of price and capabilities. As I already said, I don’t understand the whining about reusing design. What difference does it make how old this design is if you like it and are satisfied with it? Especially if this allows you to make the price much lower.

Camera. Yes, yes, yes, judging by the reviews, the iPhone 6S camera is almost the standard among the latest iPhone models. Since many people do not like the image processing algorithm in the iPhone 7 and 8 (they turn yellow, there is “soap” in the details).

In my opinion, this is currently the most balanced smartphone from Apple. And it will almost certainly remain so until the September 2018 presentation. Until some iPhone 8S comes out...

Do you want to pay to use the most powerful processor on the market (in real-life tasks the difference with the 7 Plus processor is negligible), wireless charging, True Tone? You can also buy 8 Plus. No? Let's take the 7 Plus and enjoy a good device.

Is it worth getting an iPhone X in 2017-2018?

Of course, this smartphone stands apart among all iPhone models in 2017-2018 - there are too many innovations. The very best iPhone for the coming year. Maximum possibilities. Super device. Take it and rejoice!

But... I, for example, would not be in a hurry to buy it in 2017. And, at a minimum, I would wait until the beginning (or even the middle) of 2018. And that's why:
