Bootable USB flash drive macOS Sierra. Two easy ways to create. OS X Yosemite: creating an installation disk

Even the fastest and most powerful computers become clogged with unnecessary files over time, and Apple computers are no exception. A large amount of junk on your hard drive can take up a lot of free space and also affect the speed and stability of your computer. Is there a way to quickly find and delete all those junk files that are slowing down your Mac OS?

Luckily, there's Movavi Mac Cleaner, a simple and convenient tool that will scan every corner of your system, show you what's taking up disk space, and safely remove all unnecessary files. Free up gigabytes of space and speed up your computer now - download Movavi Mac Cleaner and follow our step-by-step instructions to clean up your Mac drive.

1. Install a Mac OS X cleaning program

Open the installation file and follow the on-screen instructions on your Mac to help you install the program correctly. Once the installation is complete, launch Mac Cleaner.

2. Scan the system

As soon as you launch Mac Cleaner, the program will immediately begin checking your computer for junk. When the scanning process is completed, the screen will show the total amount of space occupied by unnecessary files.

3. Clean up your Mac drive

To quickly clean your Mac of debris, click Start cleaning. Thus, the program will erase all unnecessary cache and log files, and also delete files located in the Recycle Bin.

You can also delete unnecessary files manually. Notice the tabbed panel on the left side of the interface. In the tab System cleaning you can choose to delete cache and log files by clicking on the corresponding switches. If you want to delete individual files, click Details opposite the desired category. Next, mark the files you want to get rid of and click Start cleaning.

Open the tab Removing languages. In it you can remove all unnecessary application localizations and other language files that you will most likely never need. Just check the boxes for unnecessary localizations and click the button you already know Start cleaning.

Tab Large and old files will help you quickly find and delete “heavy” files that have been on your computer for a long time and, probably, you no longer need. To erase these files from your hard drive, check them and click Start cleaning.

To free up additional disk space, remove unused applications, as well as files remaining on the disk from programs that were previously removed. To do this, open the tab Uninstaller and select a section User Applications, OS X Applications or Leftovers. Check the box next to the programs or files you want to erase and click Delete.

On September 20, Apple finally presented the official release of macOS Sierra. Now all Mac owners can evaluate all the innovations of the operating system by downloading the distribution kit from the App Store.

But what if you have not one, but several poppies? Should I wait every time until 4 GB of OS is loaded onto my computer? But what if you don’t want to just upgrade, but install the system “from scratch” and thus not drag around various system garbage with you? Here, creating a bootable flash drive can be very helpful. Do it once and update at least a thousand Macs.

Compatible Mac Models

Keep in mind that you can install macOS Sierra on the following macs:

  • MacBook Pro and Air - models from 2010.
  • Mac mini and Mac Pro - also from 2010
  • MacBook - from 2009
  • iMac - from 2009.

Preparatory operations

There are two simple and reliable ways to create a bootable USB flash drive. But before we begin to consider them, we will do a number of preparatory actions that are necessary in both cases.

So, we need:
1. USB flash drive (at least 8 GB) Make sure in advance that it does not contain the information you need, since the media will be formatted.
2. Mac distribution. You can download from the link
3. The mac itself

Method No. 1 (standard) using the Terminal

Make sure the downloaded image is in the applications folder

  1. We connect the flash drive
  2. Open the Terminal (programs>other. Or through Spotlight, control+spacebar)
Attention! Follow the next steps very carefully!
  3. We write sudo and press space
  4. Now through Finder we go to the folder programs(Applications), then right-click on “install macOS Sierra” and then “show package contents”

  5. Open the folder Resources, find the file createinstallmedia and drag it into the Terminal window
  6. After the lines that appear we write --volume(required two dashes) and press space
  7. Now we transfer the flash drive icon from the desktop to the terminal window
  8. Add - applicationpath and again a space
  9. There's still a little bit left. Drag the “macOS Sierra installation” distribution kit into the Terminal from the program folder and click enter
  10. Enter the password and enter again
  11. If confirmation is required, please write y and enter again
  12. We wait 15-20 minutes and the macOS Sierra bootable flash drive is ready.

    "Erasing Disk: 0%... 10%... 20%... 30%...100%...
    Copying installer files to disk…
    Copy complete.
    Making disk bootable...
    Copying boot files...
    Copy complete.
    Done."

By the way, you could simply copy and paste this entire block of commands into the Terminal at once, but practice shows that rarely does anyone get by without syntax errors in this case. So it’s better not a couple of minutes longer, but it’s reliable.

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia –volume /Volumes/Untitled –applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app –nointeraction &&say Done

Method No. 2. Bootable macOS Sierra USB flash drive using the utility DiskMaker X

Read on topic: — preparing Mac for the transition to macOS Sierra

This method is also very reliable, and also quite simple.

  1. Insert the flash drive
  2. Download the DiskMaker X utility
  3. Launch and press the button macOS Sierra (10.12)
  4. The utility informs you that it has found the installer in the program folder. Click Use this copy
  5. At this stage, DiskMaker warns that all data on the flash drive will be erased. Click An 8 GB USB thumb drive
  6. Select a flash drive from the list and click Choose this disk
  7. Another warning that data from the flash drive will be deleted, click Erase then create the disk

A bootable USB flash drive with macOS Mojave comes in handy when you need to install the system from scratch or update several machines at once. Now I will tell you how to create such a flash drive in macOS itself and in Windows.

The instructions are suitable for macOS Sierra, High Sierra and Mojave.

How to create a bootable USB flash drive on macOS

We will need any USB drive with at least 8 GB and the free Disk Creator utility. A flash drive can also be created using console commands through the terminal, but I don’t see the point in suffering.

Step 1: Download macOS Mojave

If you currently have macOS High Sierra or an earlier version of macOS installed, you can download macOS Mojave from the Mac App Store, and a new Install macOS Mojave icon will appear in your macOS Applications folder.

Once the download is complete, the macOS Mojave installation file will appear in your Applications folder.

Step 2: Launch Disk Creator

Launch Disk Creator. If you downloaded the macOS Mojave installer, the utility will automatically find that installer.

To create a bootable USB flash drive, select the drive, the macOS Mojave installation file will be downloaded automatically

Step 3: Create a boot disk

Click Create Installer and wait while Disk Creator creates a bootable USB flash drive. On a fast drive, the process takes 3–4 minutes.

How to create a bootable macOS USB flash drive on Windows

When creating a flash drive in Windows, you will need the TransMac utility. It is paid, but after installation there is a two-week trial period. Which is more than enough for us.

Step 1: Download macOS Mojave

Alas, there is no official way to say macOS from Windows. You will have to download it using your iMac or MacBook. Or find an installer on torrents.

Please note that the installer must be in .dmg format

Step 2: Run TransMac in Administrator Mode

Right-click on the TransMac icon and select the appropriate item in the menu.

Right click on TransMac and run it in administrator mode

Step 3. Format the flash drive

  1. Format Disk for Mac.

Before creating a bootable USB flash drive in Windows, the flash drive itself must be formatted

Step 4. Select the dmg file with the macOS image

  1. Right click on the name of the flash drive;
  2. Restore with Disk Image ;
  3. Specify the path to the macOS installation file;
  4. Wait until the bootable USB drive is created.

Start recovery from disk image
Locate the Mojave installation file you downloaded earlier

How to boot from a flash drive and start installation

Insert the bootable USB flash drive into the Mac and turn it on while holding down the Option key. This will allow you to begin the installation. If you are going to install the system on a Hackintosh, you will select the flash drive as a “bootable” drive in the BIOS.

And definitely. In this article, I told you how not to forget anything and spend a minimum of time reinstalling the system.

Now that OS X Yosemite has been released to the masses, many users may want to make a bootable installation disc. To do this, you will need a flash drive or other external storage device. Such a disk will allow you to update the system on several computers (without downloading the installer again), make a “clean” installation, and will also be useful in case of emergency situations.

Creating a bootable installation disk is not a complicated process, but there are several parts to it. Before you get started, it's worth making sure you have everything you need:

  • An external USB drive or flash drive with a size of at least 16GB, which does not contain important data and can be safely erased;
  • You downloaded from App Store program "Install OS X Yosemite.app", it is located in the "Programs" folder and you didn't start for installation
  • You will be able to perform all the necessary actions from an account with administrator rights (your account most likely is one) and you have set a non-empty password for it.

In addition, we take it for granted that all this is done on a Mac, which is compatible with Yosemite in terms of parameters. If your computer can install (or already has) OS X Mavericks installed, it also supports OS X Yosemite.

Create a bootable installation disk with OS X Yosemite in two steps

For our purposes, we will use a 16GB flash drive, but you can use other external storage media, such as an external hard drive. The convenience of a flash drive is undeniable if you are going to update several computers. Let's start:

Step one: formatting a USB drive so that it can be booted from

Without this operation, the disk will not be bootable. If you don't want to erase this drive, you'll have to find another one that you can clean without a doubt.

  1. Connect an external USB drive to your Mac and launch Disk Utility, then select the connected drive in the left column.
  2. On the right side of the window, click on the “Erase” tab and clean the disk using Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
  3. Go to the “Disk Partition” tab and under “Partition Scheme”, expand the drop-down menu and select “Partition: 1” instead of “Current”.
  4. Change the name to "Untitled" instead of "New 1", then click on the "Options..." button under the partition scheme
  5. Select "GUID Partition Scheme" in the partition scheme type selection window, click "OK"
  6. Click “Apply” and confirm deleting data in the additional window
  7. Close Disk Utility when the operation is complete

Now that the disk is ready, you can proceed directly to creating the installer.

Step two: create an OS X Yosemite installation disk

The next step is to make an installation disk from a previously formatted external USB drive. If you already have a previously downloaded OS X Yosemite installer, you can go straightaway to the third point instructions:

  1. Download OS X Yosemite from Mac App Store, it's free (clickable direct link), but NOT INSTALL!
  2. After the download is complete, the program Installing OS X Yosemite will start automatically. Complete it without performing any actions.
  3. Run the program Terminal and enter the following command in it (it is best if you copy and paste it in the window terminal):
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app --nointeraction
  4. Enter the administrator password when asked (the administrator password is your password for logging into your computer and/or installing programs). If previously, when prompted, you simply pressed “enter”, this will not work here. You need to set a password other than empty. If you are categorically against passwords, then it is in vain, as our experience suggests - they steal, sir, you know. Don't you have anything to steal? You shouldn’t think so - you, for example, entered your credit card details into an online store... Decide for yourself. Well, if you are against passwords, then set the password to “123” for the duration of this operation. We recommend adding the phrase “one two three” to the hint (the system will not give you the same numbers as in the password in the hint), and after completing the work, you can change the password again to an empty one. When typing it in Terminal it won't show up, don't be alarmed, this is normal. After entering the password, press “Enter” and the process will begin
  5. You will see a series of messages similar to the ones below. Let the process finish, you will see "Done" messages when it does. The process will take some time - this is copying several gigabytes and it does not happen instantly.
    "Erasing Disk: 0%... 10%... 20%... 30%...100%...
    Copying installer files to disk...
    Copy complete.
    Making disk bootable...
    Copying boot files...
    Copy complete.
    Done."
  6. When you see the "Done" message, Terminal can be closed. Your external boot drive is ready.

This is all. You will see your new installation disk as an external drive in Finder:

To use an external installation disk with OS X Yosemite, you must boot from it. To do this, press and hold the ⌥Alt/Option key when turning on or rebooting. When you see several drives, release the key and select "Install OS X Yosemite" to boot.

If the disk fails to boot, you probably skipped the first step, which was to set the GUID partition scheme, or you made a mistake when entering the command in Terminal. If this happens, simply repeat the process exactly following the instructions.

Using the created bootloader, you can upgrade to OS X Yosemite from any version of OS X, starting with Snow Leopard. You can also do clean install or upgrade multiple Macs without downloading the installer over and over again. Be sure to back up your computer before upgrading to any operating system version. If something goes wrong and you lose valuable information, you will have no one to blame but yourself.

Have fun using the new version of OS X!

All of the above steps have been tested many times by the authors of the original article and have been confirmed to work with the final version of OS X Yosemite. If you have any problems, repeat the steps again step by step. You can leave a comment on this entry on our blog or on the original English-language resource. Fair, not overpriced and not underestimated. There should be prices on the Service website. Necessarily! without asterisks, clear and detailed, where technically possible - as accurate and conclusive as possible.

If spare parts are available, up to 85% of complex repairs can be completed in 1-2 days. Modular repairs require much less time. The website shows the approximate duration of any repair.

Warranty and responsibility

A guarantee must be given for any repairs. Everything is described on the website and in the documents. The guarantee is self-confidence and respect for you. Free diagnostics

This is very important and has already become a rule of good manners for the service center. Diagnostics is the most difficult and important part of the repair, but you don't have to pay a penny for it, even if you don't repair the device based on its results.

Service repairs and delivery

A good service values your time, so it offers free delivery. And for the same reason, repairs are carried out only in the workshop of a service center: correctly and according to technology can only be done in a prepared place.

Convenient schedule

If the Service works for you, and not for itself, then it is always open! absolutely. The schedule should be convenient to fit in before and after work. Good service works on weekends and holidays. We are waiting for you and working on your devices every day: 9:00 - 21:00

The reputation of professionals consists of several points

Company age and experience

Reliable and experienced service has been known for a long time.
If a company has been on the market for many years and has managed to establish itself as an expert, people turn to it, write about it, and recommend it. We know what we are talking about, since 98% of incoming devices in the service center are restored.
Other service centers trust us and refer complex cases to us.

How many masters in areas

If there are always several engineers waiting for you for each type of equipment, you can be sure:
1. there will be no queue (or it will be minimal) - your device will be taken care of right away.
2. you give your Macbook for repair to an expert in the field of Mac repairs. He knows all the secrets of these devices

Technical literacy

If you ask a question, a specialist should answer it as accurately as possible.
So that you can imagine what exactly you need.
They will try to solve the problem. In most cases, from the description you can understand what happened and how to fix the problem.
