L. A. Borisova, head of the cultural department of PA "Raduga-LIK", Ryazan

The rapid development of information technology in the last two decades has made relevant the question of the role of the library in modern society, which is considered as an information center that provides access to the digitized resources of all libraries in the world, and a cultural and leisure center that focuses on various forms of mass work with the reader.

We, developers and manufacturers of library equipment "Rainbow-LIK", see the library as an informational, cultural and spiritual center, a kind of bridge between the classical cultural heritage and modernity. First of all, this concerns the school library, which, in our opinion, can adequately perform the educational function of education.

Let's clarify our position. The spread of the Internet has certainly given us access to a huge amount of information. But, like any powerful drug used uncontrollably, network wealth has a number of side effects that society is already experiencing. Distracted attention, the habit of jumping from news to news without dwelling on what you read, the lack of desire to formulate your own thoughts, replaced by reading other people's superficial comments, give rise to Internet addiction. First of all, this concerns children, whose ability to think independently in such conditions has almost no chance of being developed. Reading any serious, deep literature without the skills of concentration of thought and independent analysis of the text becomes almost impossible.

Unfortunately, the density of the school curriculum does not allow teachers to linger for a long time on the study of individual works of the classics, not to mention instilling in students the ability to read in the traditional sense of the word - without skimming the text in order to snatch the main events, but by trying on the thoughts and actions of the heroes. , catching hints and references scattered by the author, ultimately asking the same questions that prompted the author to write the book. The aspect of moral development when reading classical literature thus remains untouched. Who, if not a library worker, can and should stand up for the defense of eternal values, the stronghold of which for previous generations of readers was classical literature?

Based on the triune concept of a modern school library - informational, cultural and spiritual - we designed the library space of the St. Petersburg secondary school "Kudrovo Education Center".

The school library includes a subscription, a reading room, a textbook fund and a media library.

In accordance with the principle of multifunctionality, the reading room space is equipped with transformable furniture and is divided into several zones.

The free work area provides space for various types of group intellectual activities. For example, discussion clubs provide great assistance in developing schoolchildren’s independent thinking, the ability to analyze information and argue their position.

We see the librarian as the organizer and leader of such clubs, focusing students’ attention on the pressing issues of our time, as well as instilling the skills of a culture of discussion.

No less important is the active participation of the librarian in other school associations. Let’s say that when staging plays in a school theater, a librarian can recommend literature about life, customs, manners of that time, critical articles that help to understand the author’s intention. He can lead a political circle in which, in addition to analyzing current events, they understand their socio-economic background and study methods of influencing the electorate. A film club that introduces schoolchildren to great films, a poetry club, a history club, the editors of a school website - an analogue of a traditional wall newspaper - all this can reveal the intellectual and moral potential of a student and become a place for lively communication between children and adults.

The multifunctional furniture we have manufactured - such as a multimedia shelving unit with a computer and panels for drawing with a marker, as well as transformable slide-type modules, from which you can create multi-level rows for seating and a stage for performances - is intended for all of the above types of activities. Among other things, this furniture complex allows you to conduct lessons and seminars that require connection to a global computer network.

Current classes at the intersection of several disciplines are appropriate here, and the participation of a librarian who can help find the necessary information, recommend interesting resources, and new works related to the topic under study will be most welcome.

For younger schoolchildren, there is a separate area with shelves in the shape of a train with carriages, Christmas trees and houses. On a play podium-slide with soft pillows, you can seat children during master classes or performances in a puppet theater with a screen, also included in the furniture set. Transformable tables on wheels, armchairs and chairs are designed for group work. As practice has shown, this area is very popular among children.

The multimedia zone, designed for individual work with information, includes acoustic ball chairs, soft cubicle modules and open chairs for working with laptops and tablets, as well as separate tables - everyone can choose a seat according to their preferences. Relaxation islands are scattered throughout the territory - comfortable armchairs for singles and sofas for groups.

In general, the design of the premises is aimed at making the person who comes here feel comfortable and at ease both during work and during leisure time. As far as one can judge, the plan has justified itself: the library is very popular among students who come here to study, socialize, and simply relax between lessons.

Of course, new forms of work require special requirements for a library employee: versatile erudition, communication skills, and the ability to navigate Internet resources. And the modern solutions we used are only a tool in the work of a teacher-librarian. He will become a guide through network labyrinths for both students and teachers. Only he can “spiritualize” the library space, help modern schoolchildren overcome the “cultural gap” between the problems of a consumer-oriented society and the eternal questions of humanity that permeate world classical literature.

Fortunately, just such a person is at the head of the library of the new Kudrov school - Yulia Vyacheslavovna Kovalenko. And we allow ourselves to express the hope that through the joint efforts of teachers and librarians, the Internet from the virtual world in which the child prefers to spend his free time will turn into a regular information base for him. And the library will become the intellectual, cultural and spiritual center of the school.

The ability to learn new things, recognize what is reliable, see connections between areas of knowledge, ideas and concepts, the ability to skillfully apply acquired knowledge in practice become the main skills of a person and citizen and the main task of the educational process at school.

Libraries of the educational institution have traditionally performed in society the function of custodians and carriers of not only information, but also historical traditions, through them the continuity of the accumulated cultural heritage of the people was carried out, they introduced the younger generation into the context of world literature. Today, libraries of the most “advanced” countries, based on digital technologies, represent not only a knowledge bank / repository of cultural traditions of modern society, but also, above all, free access to information and publications to further improve the level of knowledge of users, seems no less important than freedom of speech.

Free access to knowledge (whether the library is a physical location or located on the Internet), combined with new skills as an individual and citizen, influences the establishment of a balance between copyright and free information laws. Thus, libraries are taking a leading position in creating an information society and maintaining its sustainability.

There are several underlying reasons for the loss of the most important library functions by domestic school libraries as a system that influences the formation of young people’s involvement in their history, culture and language:

Weak preparation of librarians to work with Internet technologies Web 2.0 - underequipping with computers, high-quality access to the Internet, and special equipment for digitizing printed publications

Failure to provide open access to funds on the Internet

A general underestimation by society and school teachers of the new role of libraries (and especially libraries of educational institutions) in the information society.

Over the past decades, school libraries have become hostage to the routine work associated with ordering and delivering textbooks and issuing books to students.

“What should a school librarian do and how should she work to meet the new requirements?

The library is part of a living organism, which is the school. And like any part of the “living”, it can function successfully only under certain conditions. These conditions depend on such parameters as financing, staffing, fund volume, technical equipment; Flexible work schedules that meet the needs of classes, teachers, individual students and small groups of students are important.

The library must be equipped with all necessary equipment (computers, printers, projectors, electronic boards, etc.)

The librarian becomes the person responsible for the processes of connecting sources of knowledge and relationships between participants in the pedagogical process in educational situations and during extracurricular hours.

The school is developing, and in these conditions the school library is also developing, showing examples direct connection between schoolchildren’s performance and their new activities. This activity is primarily related to expanding the range of library resources and services that are aimed at developing and shaping the information culture and literacy of schoolchildren, and supporting their independent actions with information.

The librarian always taught schoolchildren to love books and reading, and in this sense he has always been and remains a teacher. Now, in his new capacity as a teacher, the librarian can teach schoolchildren who are users of his information and library center:

  • the ability to read with interest as a basis for learning, personal development and pleasure, - through optimizing access to information and the use of modern technologies to support educational and methodological activities. This may include, for example, assistance in creating blogs for high school students - reading diaries. Or the creation by primary school children, together with their parents, of blogs or wiki pages reflecting the children’s activities at school, stories about the books they read, video cartoons based on literary scripts, maps with the travels of book characters, photographs of writers and poets - the authors of the books they read, reports of success in reading , plans, etc.
  • information literacy - through the formation and development of digital, visual, textual and technological literacy as the basis for using emerging technologies as an important means of learning in the present and future. For example, when preparing children to participate in network projects and consulting at each stage, providing assistance in using a variety of social services and tools to create their own author’s product in accordance with educational or individual needs.
  • Information culture through training in ethical practices in the collection, evaluation, and use of information; responsible and safe use of social services and tools, which can play an important role in shaping a person’s personality. For example, in lessons on safe behavior on the Internet, in the process of teaching schoolchildren to work in collective environments, when getting acquainted with library resources and the capabilities of Internet resources, etc.

The development of information literacy and culture of schoolchildren in the classroom depends on the teacher. But to teach schoolchildren a modern teacher-librarian is simply obliged to navigate freely in a complex information-rich environment - employee of the school information and library center. In close collaboration with school teachers, the librarian can develop children's independent learning skills, develop a desire to use these skills in everyday educational work, and influence a sense of responsibility and the ability to self-assess (reflection).

The most effective methods of work of a school librarian today for the development of information literacy and culture are associated with the project and research activities of schoolchildren, carried out jointly with school teachers, and with the active use of the network wealth of Web2.0 services and tools.

Increasingly, there are examples of development by librarians programs for the development of information and library centers in schools in accordance with the requirements of the time:

  • taking into account the joint actions of subject teachers focused on new forms and methods of working with schoolchildren to form and develop their information literacy and culture;
  • aimed at supporting students’ self-training and their independent educational research;
  • focused on training and consulting school subject teachers for their use of information technology in the classroom;
  • aimed at developing a “virtual library service” (blogs, Google sites, wiki environments), allowing one to obtain information about resources and the library resources themselves while working on a home computer.

Programs can be (and are) implemented if they become operational. And this happens when the librarian is a member of the school’s teaching staff and takes part in the development, implementation and evaluation of educational programs, events and activities that focus on the development of information literacy and culture among schoolchildren. When the actions of this specialist are understood, approved and accepted by the teaching staff.

Who will teach the librarian himself?

School librarians must study (remotely). In modern conditions, it is teachers and teacher-librarians, like in no other specialty, who must be “on their toes” all the time - to be aware of rapidly developing Internet technologies, new pedagogical methods and techniques in order to more effectively transfer their experience and teach the younger generation. In the near future, distance mini-courses on mastering certain services or tools should be developed, “in conjunction” with library and educational activities.

The most important thing that happens in such distance courses is a “revolution” of consciousness: from paper to digital, from the fear of taking at least some step on the Internet (except, probably, turning to email and searching the Internet), so as not to seem funny, to bold actions that confirm the desire to constantly learn, master something new, not only “take” from others on the Internet, but also give, share your own.

Criteria for the effectiveness of school libraries, which are highlighted by Australian colleagues who are very advanced in library science - “the composition of the collection, the organizational structure, the use of information technology, personnel policy (and this is not just one librarian), the space of the library, the contribution to the organization of a differentiated approach to teaching schoolchildren, the development of mutual understanding between people and the increase knowledge." Most likely, these criteria are true for any library of an educational institution, including our country. It is necessary to develop all components of school libraries: the material base, the provision of computers and access to the Internet, regular replenishment of the collection, the creation of a “virtual” part of the library, and special attention to the information literacy of each schoolchild, creating appropriate conditions for this.

Level of information literacy of a modern librarian determined by the need and feasibility of using modern Internet technologies - social services and tools in the teaching and educational activities of the school as a whole. We have already figured out what is important for a student today - the ability to define, achieve, evaluate, manage, integrate, create and communicate.

What should a librarian be able to do to develop these skills in schoolchildren??

The following areas of work are most directly relevant to today’s school teacher-librarian:

  • train teachers and schoolchildren in practical skills in the field of information literacy;
  • act as a partner for subject teachers, working in collaboration to teach search to schoolchildren;
  • be able to evaluate and use a variety of information resources;
  • act as an information specialist who identifies, selects, evaluates and offers a variety of resources for use by teachers;
  • act as a consultant on the use of various resources;
  • act as a program manager who determines the goals, objectives and methods of library services and organizes the work of the information and library center accordingly;
  • share responsibility with teachers for developing in children a desire to learn, the ability to understand information, the ability to draw their own conclusions and create new knowledge, and share what is understood and indicated with others.

How to make a teacher your ally in this activity?

Work together throughout the entire school year - on joint programs for the development of information literacy and culture of schoolchildren from 1st to 11th grade, pre-compiled and approved by the school’s teachers’ council! Constantly improve your knowledge. Teach what you learn yourself. Always demonstrate your need. And, of course, together with teachers, implement everything planned. This is not an easy process, but absolutely necessary. Either you are a teacher-librarian who is able to advise students during their self-preparation for lessons, their activities related to educational research within projects (including remotely), or you are a technical specialist who only deals with ordering and issuing textbooks.

Should the school provide additional library fees for this?

First of all, it is necessary to resolve the issue of providing schoolchildren with textbooks. The school should have a library assistant - a technical employee who, according to a generated list approved by the director, would order and deliver textbooks, and would also process them, forming an electronic database. The staff of the school information and library center is at least 3-4 people. Directors are now more free to make decisions.

What first of all needs to be reviewed and changed by school librarians in their work practice in connection with the introduction of a new status?

The librarian himself needs to understand and clearly understand that a new position means new responsibilities. The new position means constant self-study and self-education, mastering new technologies and not only Web 2.0 Internet technologies, but also, above all, pedagogical ones. And at school, the main characters are schoolchildren. All the activities of the teacher - the librarian - are around them, for them and with them. Everything should be aimed at supporting their desire to learn, at interaction with subject teachers in the common desire to improve the quality of this education.

The library of an educational institution is, first of all, a library for participants in the educational process.

New trends in school education, outlined in the draft of a new standard for general secondary education (Institute for Strategic Studies of the Russian Academy of Education), orientation towards a competency-based approach, the disappearance of dedicated computer science lessons in middle and high schools, the requirement to widely use the latest Internet technologies in subject teaching, a shift in emphasis to educational work on self-knowledge and self-training of students, the gradual transformation of school libraries into information and library centers - all this gives hope for changes in the business of school libraries. On society's understanding of the new role of the library and librarian in school, which today is defined as follows:

  • The library is vital part of the school curriculum;
  • Librarian - teacher - participant in the educational process;
  • Librarian - active member of the teaching staff;
  • A librarian teaches information literacy to schoolchildren in the process of their independent educational research;
  • Librarian improves reading level using written reviews, including on the Internet (blogs, wikis, social services, Web2.0);
  • Librarian - advises participants in the pedagogical process on work with computer, mobile technologies and electronic texts.

School library

A modern secondary school faces the most important task - to teach schoolchildren to navigate the mass of information, to prepare them for life in the information society. The library plays a significant role in this. The need for special information preparation of a person for life in the information society is the main problem of our time, therefore the main direction of the work of the school library as an information center is to assist students and teachers in the educational process.

The school library is the information center of our educational institution. It functions as a traditional library with elements of a media library, supports and provides the educational process.

The main task of the school library as an information center is to assist students and teachers in the educational process.

For whom and why was this page created?

The “School Library” page on our school’s website is not just a “tribute to fashion”, it is a necessity, and without it it is already difficult for the library to continue to exist.It was created for school library readers - students, teachers and parents.

Readers of our library are acutely short of time. They cannot sit for hours in the reading room and work with encyclopedias, reference books, and dictionaries. Where do they find information when preparing for lessons? Of course, on the Internet. But so that readers do not forget that the school library has a lot of valuable material, useful and interesting books, magazines, this is why the “School Library” page was created.
In order to attract readers from the Internet to the library, to its resources, we will try to reveal the school library collection from different sides. But this is not the only purpose of the page. If the school library has entered the virtual environment, then we will replenish our information resources at the expense of everything valuable that has been created in this environment by the work of many people.
When you get to the “School Library” page, you will be installed as its guest - this means that you have entered our library, our school. We will try to make you feel comfortable here so that you spend your time profitably.

The purpose of creating the “School Library” page:

    to form and improve the information culture of school students;

    to form and develop students’ interest in reading;

    develop creative abilities;

    form and improve communicative competence.

Objectives of the “School Library” page:

    expanding the information space of the school library;

    providing information support to the educational process at school;

    attracting school library readers to actively participate in the life of the library;

    use of ICT in the work of the school library;

    sharing work experience with colleagues.

The school library is a place that all students and teachers love and visit. Our library was opened in 1962. It is located on the third floor and occupies an isolated room. The library has a subscription and a reading room, which is combined with the subscription, equipped with tables for readers, chairs, bookshelves, bookcases and shelves, and a local history department has been organized. The library is equipped with a computer for the teacher-librarian and a computer for students, there is a printer, scanner, copier, a projector and screen are installed. The library's collection is replenished with electronic digital resources and textbooks. The educational fund is located in a separate room. We can offer you any textbook or book, you can look through magazines and chat with friends. In the silence of the library you can do your homework, write an essay, or go online.

We really look forward to working with you, dear teachers and students, in the new school year!
