Yandex browser, despite its relative “youth” in comparison with other browsers, very quickly gained popularity and its niche of users.

As you know, many people have a negative attitude towards changes in anything. A similar situation occurred with the Yandex browser; many users negatively perceived the new look of this program, which brought a new interface, and hence there was great interest in how to return the old version.

Let's say right away that the updates involve more than just design changes. Typically, the previous version is more susceptible to various threats: this includes security issues, eliminating “holes” in the program and adding new useful options. Naturally, all this leads to an even greater load on the processing power of the device on which the browser is installed. This is another reason for user dissatisfaction and a desire to return to the old design.

In this regard, there are two options for how to return the familiar old Yandex browser.

Program features

If you decide to restore the Yandex browser to its previous form only because you like the old design and everything else suits you, then the best option would be to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the developers for this case.

To return the old interface:

  1. Open the browser;
  2. Click on the “Menu” icon (three horizontal stripes in the upper right part of the window);
  3. In the pop-up window, select “Settings”.
  4. In the page that opens, go to the “Appearance settings” section.
  5. The new version is enabled by default. Click on the “Turn off new interface” button.
  6. Accordingly, the reverse process will be the same, only the button will be called “Enable new interface”.
  7. We close the session and restart the browser.

Attention! This option is a transitional version of the program and will not be available in newer versions. This was done to make it easier for old users to adapt to the new interface.

What should those who don’t have such a copy or the new version simply does not support the installed operating system do (Yandex has officially announced the end of support for Windows XP in its new versions).

Installing the old version

An effective way to return the old version of Yandex browser is to completely uninstall the current version and install a distribution kit with the version of the program released before the update.

If you have not previously downloaded the installer, you will need to download it. Unfortunately, the official website cannot help us with this, but any search engine can help. Using it, we find the version of interest on the Internet; fortunately, there are enough file hosting services with various software, and they work completely free of charge.

The method, of course, is not very rational, since if you don’t have a good resource in mind that you can trust, there is a small chance that the downloaded files contain some kind of virus.

Before installing, we remove the browser from our device. To do this, we use standard operating system functions:
Click the “Start” button -> “Control Panel” -> “Programs and Features”.

In the window that opens, select Yandex browser from the list and click the “Delete” button.

We wait for the process to complete and proceed to the installation.

Attention! After removing the program from your computer, you lose access to all saved personal data: passwords, browsing history, bookmarks, etc. A deleted browser cannot be restored. If you don’t remember your passwords, write them down in advance and save them as bookmarks for transfer.

Installation is also not a difficult process:

  • Find the downloaded installation package and double-click to start the installation;
  • We agree to the terms;
  • We are waiting for the installation to complete.

The whole process will take place automatically and after completion you can use the program with the old interface.

Advice! After installing the program, turn off automatic updates in the settings, otherwise all our efforts will be in vain and the browser will update to the latest version.

System Restore

Another way to return the old version of the browser after updating it is to use the operating system properties and roll back the system to the previous restore point (Provided that you have this option enabled and a restore point has been created).

You can do this in two ways:

  • Roll back only the browser itself.
  • Restore the system completely.

The first method is simple and straightforward. Restoring the previous version of the product:

1.On the program shortcut, open the context menu with the right mouse button and select “Properties”;

2.In the window that opens, click on the “File location” button;

3.Go to the root of this directory;

4.Right-click for this folder and select “Restore previous version”;

After this, a window will open with a list of possible restore points. We select and wait for the process to complete.

The second option is more global. It should be understood that rolling back the entire system will entail not only changes to the browser, but may also affect other programs and components. If you really need to use the old Yandex browser design, then:

  1. On the keyboard, press the key combination Win + R;
  2. In the window that opens, enter the restore command;
  3. Select a restore point and confirm your desire.

Alternative way:
Start -> Control Panel -> Recovery -> Run System Restore.

So we can see that there are ways to keep the old browser interface design for a while longer. But no matter how much we want, sooner or later we will have to get used to something new, since development does not stand still and developers make changes to their product, refusing to support old versions.

For some time now, users of early releases of Windows XP suddenly began to notice that their system had ceased to receive the attention of developers and new versions of old programs often did not start. A similar “surprise” could arise with Yandex Browser. Usually this was discovered only after an unsuspecting XP user updated his working browser to a new version. After timid attempts to restore it, it turns out that there is nowhere to download it from.

In the described case, you need to update XP to the latest servicepack version. But the problem of fresh servicepacks is not the topic of the article, but is used as an example of a situation in which it became necessary to get an old version of the browser. In the article we will outline the points that allow you to restore your old browser.

What to do and where to get an old browser?

You can go three ways:

  1. Revert the operating system to an earlier restore point.
  2. Contact Yandex Browser support and ask them to solve the problem
  3. Try to find a distribution kit on the Internet

We will dwell on these issues in more detail in the next subsection.

About the development of Internet browsers in a company with the letter Y

Without hiding my desire to be academic, I dare to make a brief excursion into the world of Yandex Browsers at the very beginning of our conversation about old Internet clients. Quite short.

Yandex Browser was created in 2012 based on the Blink framework. Popularity in RuNet is approximately 8%. The browser supports HTML5 technology.

Since October 2013, browser releases have been marked in a special way: “XX.YY”. The first two digits are the year of manufacture, the second are the month. For example, the label “11.14” means that the browser was released in November 2014.

Yandex.Alpha is a new browser with a revolutionary interface. The goal of the development is to open pages to fill the entire screen. The scoreboard has become animated, and the tabs have been moved down. The browser is integrated with all Yandex services. Built-in support for third-party extensions. So-called “mouse gestures” are used, when the movement of the mouse along a certain trajectory is interpreted as a command to the browser. For example, clicking and moving the mouse along the trajectory “right down and immediately left” will serve as a command: “return closed tab.”

How to install a previous version of the Internet browser

Let's consider three options for actions aimed at returning the browser from the Yandex company to the old version.

Operating system rollback

If you use “restore points” in the OS, then it is likely that rolling back to an earlier version will restore the old program settings installed on the system. If the browser updated automatically and then stopped working, there is a pretty good chance of returning it to its original state.

If you do not use this technology or have disabled it, then you will not be able to use this method.

Contact Support


First, go to the browser technical support section: yandex.ru/support/yabrowser/support/support.xml. Next, find the link “feedback form” in the text and follow it. Some kind of confusing redirection will occur, after which you will be taken back to the page where you will be asked to ask a question. Find the feedback link there again and enter your message into the form about unsuccessful attempts to restore the previous version of the Internet client.

Using distributions saved by other users

You can be tempted to solve the problem here and now, without having to deal with a long correspondence with the support service or understanding the settings of rollback points (were there any at all?). And then the hand reaches out to type something like “download old Yandex” into the search. The result will probably please you and the search results will be full of offers to download the program. You will be especially touched by the indication that the download is free. Only these sites will be unofficial and only God knows what you will download to your computer along with the distribution and what problems may arise after that.

Perhaps they will be such that more than just one browser will have to be restored.


Alas, I will not advise you, dear reader, where you can download the “long-suffering” Yandex Browser and here’s why. Because there is no such official possibility - Yandex does not provide links to download old versions in the public domain. But this does not mean that he will not give you a link during a private correspondence with the support service if you tearfully ask.

So, what needs to be done to return the old Yandex Browser design? The first thing that came to my mind was to remove the new version of the browser and install the old one. In principle, I was even sure that this was exactly the right decision. And I started looking for the old version, but it was very difficult to find it, because there are no old versions on the official website. Well, on other sites, you understand, the browser can be glued with a virus, well, in short, it’s not entirely safe...

All actions, well, to return the old design, need to be carried out only with the Yandex Browser closed, well, I’m telling you this just in case!

But then I came across an old and respected RuBoard forum, it’s an old forum, but it’s full of all kinds of information, the most important thing is that the information is necessary, you know. The forum is smart! Well, on this forum, in a topic about Yandex Browser, I found this information (one user wrote there) that they say you can write something in some file and this should return the old browser design, even if you have a new version of Yandex Browser that does not support returning to the old design. Well, to be honest, it was hard to believe, but I tried anyway. And you know what? I was pleasantly surprised, because this trick worked and I was able to return the old design on the new version of the browser, it’s just super. In general, I tell you everything how to do it. Look, you need to hold down the Win + R buttons, then the Run window will appear, there you need to write the following command:


This command is needed to get into the Roaming folder. In general, click OK, a folder will open, in it you need to click here:


This is to get directly into the AppData folder. Next you will be taken to this folder, here you already need to go to the Local folder:


Are you in the Local folder? Great, now inside, follow this path, that is, you need to get here:

\Yandex\YandexBrowser\User Data

You will most likely have almost the same thing inside you as I do, well, that is, this:


Well, now the most important thing is that in this folder you need to find a file such as Local State, here I have it:


Guys, we'll have to edit the Local State file, you know? Therefore, just in case, I advise you to make a copy of it, but you never know.

Alternatively, you can uninstall the new version of the browser and then install the old version. While deleting a browser isn't that difficult, finding the old version will be much more difficult. Of course, there are sites on the Internet where you can download old versions of the browser, but often it is in such files that attackers like to add malicious files or even viruses. Unfortunately, Yandex itself does not provide links to archived versions of the browser, as, for example, Opera does. We will not recommend any third-party resources for security reasons, but if you are confident in your abilities, you can independently find past versions of Yandex Browser on the Internet.
