Setting up the router

Entering the settings menu

Let's look at how to configure a zyxel router step by step. To start setting up, you need to go to the router settings menu. This can be done from any web browser.

First of all, we connect the router to the computer using a network cable, one end to the LAN port of the router, the other end to the computer’s network card. Turn on the router. When the indicators behind the front panel light up, launch any web browser and write the ip of the zyxel router in the address bar - 192.168.1.1. A window will open in which you must enter your username and password. The manufacturer assigns the same values to all devices – “admin” and “1234”, respectively.

Entering your username and password to enter the router settings menu

After entering the settings menu, it is recommended to change the password. If an error is displayed, then the factory settings were probably changed during previous settings. To reset all settings, press the reset button on the back of the router. If this also does not help, then your zyxel router is probably not working.

Router settings menu structure

The router settings are divided into certain categories, each of which can be selected in the list on the left side of the window. In the center, the selected menu item is configured.

The first page of the router settings menu

The first page displays complete information about the current status of both the router itself and all connections. This title page is specific to ZyXEL; the same information is displayed on other models, for example, when setting up the zyxel p660 router. Of course, there is all the information about the devices connected to the USB ports.

Setting up an Internet connection

To set up an Internet connection, select the “Internet” item, then the “Authorization” sub-item.

In the list of standard and channel, it is better to leave everything by default - the router will automatically select the best options.

Submenu "Security". In this submenu, you assign the encryption type for connecting to the wireless network and set a password.

Setting up Wi-Fi network security

We leave the first three fields as default; in the “Network key” field we enter a password, which should consist of letters of the English alphabet and numbers. By the way, this rule is true for any Wi-Fi modules, be it setting up a zyxel p600 router or any other.

Firmware update

Firmware, or more correctly, microprogram, is that part of the router that can be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website and installed in the device. New firmware versions often correct identified errors, add new functionality to the router, and simply make it work faster and better. To update, you need to go to the ZyXEL website (http://zyxel.ru/keenetic-giga) and, if you have new firmware, download it to your computer.

Attention! During the update process, under no circumstances should you disconnect the router from the power supply! The consequences are unpredictable, up to and including complete failure of the router.

How to connect a zyxel router?

Today, router models from Zyxel are becoming increasingly popular. This company has a good reputation in the Russian market. Its devices, including routers, are in great demand. In this regard, in this article we will look at how to connect and configure such a device.

We will consider this process using the example of the Zyxel Keenetic Giga router model.

Connecting the router to the network

Before you begin the basic setup, you need to connect the router to your computer and network.

Please note that the model of this router has special inputs called “LAN”. You will need to insert network cables into these inputs. This model comes with two network cables. You must connect one of them to the yellow port (one of four), the other to the blue port, and you also need to connect the antennas. Don't forget about the phone, which also connects to a special black socket.

Finally, you need to turn on the router and connect it to your computer using a USB cable. After this, you can begin basic setup.

Basic router setup

There are two main ways to configure this router model. The first method is using the built-in “Zyxel NetFriend” program, which comes with the device. Another way is using the web interface. The second option is simpler, and we will consider it.

Configuration using the web interface

First of all, you need to configure the firmware and protocol.

Firmware setup

  1. Enter the IP address 192.168.1.1 in the search bar of your browser.
  2. After you enter the IP address, a window will appear asking for your login and password. Enter your username and password: usually “admin” and “1234”. Your device may have a different login and password. You can recognize it by looking at its body on the reverse side.
  3. After you enter your username and password, the system will automatically take you to the system monitor of the Internet center, where you can see the settings of your router.
  4. Next, you need to update the firmware. To do this, pay attention to the menu on the left. Select the "System" tab and go to the "Firmware" item.
  5. In the window that opens, click the “Browse” button and indicate where the old version of your device’s firmware is located.
  6. Having specified the folder with the file, click “OK” and then “Update”. Updating the firmware is necessary for the device to work correctly. You can download the latest firmware on the website zyxel.ru.
  7. Go to the “System” tab and go to the “Operation Mode” item. Here you can configure the operating mode of your router. This can be the standard default mode, via a wireless wi-fi network, or using 3G and 4G modems, if you have one.

Protocol settings

All provider data is usually specified in the service agreement.

  1. If your provider uses authentication, then you must use the data received from it, which you will need to enter by going to the “Internet” tab, and in the “Authorization” item, select the desired protocol (for example, PPPoE). The protocol used by the provider is specified in the service agreement of your provider company.
  2. In the “Connect via” line, select the interface to connect to the network.
  3. Depending on the data received from the provider, in the “Configuring IP parameters” line, select “manual”, “automatic” or “without IP address”.

Setting up wi-fi

  1. Go to the “Wi-Fi Network” tab, here you can set up a wireless network by assigning a name to it and hide the SSID, which will allow you to cancel guest access and make using the network more secure.
  2. Go to the “Wi-Fi Network” tab and select “WPS”.
  3. Place in the line “WPA Authentication - PSK”. Assign a network key and click Apply. Thus, you have set a password for using the wi-fi network.
  4. Setting up 3g and 4g is carried out similarly in the corresponding tab.

Problems with the router

If your router encounters problems during operation, you can use the following tips.

  • The main malfunctions arise due to incorrect operation of the provider and a disrupted signal. The problem can be solved by simply reconnecting to the network. Just press the power button, wait a few seconds and turn on the device.
  • If you notice that you are experiencing traffic, check whether your network is hidden. If yes, then see if the password is shown. It's entirely possible that someone could have used it. There are also frequent cases of network hacking. To protect yourself from intruders, install an antivirus.

In this section you can find a lot of useful information on this topic.

Currently, wireless connections to the Internet using external USB modems via 3G and 4G cellular networks have become widespread. Keenetic 4G is an Internet center that allows you to constantly use the World Wide Web. Thanks to Keenetic, a user can simultaneously connect several of their home or office PCs and laptops into a network and activate simultaneous Internet access for them from any location that falls under the coverage area of a mobile operator.

To do this, you only need one USB modem. A built-in access point to a wireless Wi-Fi network with a powerful antenna allows you to connect laptops, tablets and other network devices that support the IEEE 802.11n standard (operating speed 150 Mbit/s) to the Internet center. If necessary, Keenetic 4G can also be connected to an Ethernet line, which operates at a speed not exceeding 80 Mbit/s. This speed is enough to easily use any Internet sites, social networks, receive IP television and use local servers of providers.

The ZyXEL Keenetic 4G router has passed special certification under the “Yota Ready” program. In order for the Yota modem to start working, you just need to connect it to the router and the entire home network will automatically gain access to the 4G Internet.

How to connect and configure Keenetic 4G yourself

And so let's get started. Your computer is already connected to the router. We launch a web browser on it. Next we proceed step by step:

It should be noted that Keenetic 4G can work with more than 25 models of USB modems. It does not require the installation of specific firmware or additional adaptation. As mentioned above, to work, you just need to connect the modem and select the operator you need from the list. After this, users of all devices that are connected to Keenetic 4G will be able to freely access the Internet not only via Ethernet, but also via Wi-Fi. In order to organize a home network, you can use the built-in wireless access point.

Connection via dedicated Ethernet line

Using Keenetic 4G, the user has the opportunity to access the World Wide Web via a dedicated Ethernet line. Internet speed over a dedicated line reaches 100 Mbit/sec. This speed allows you to:

  • use file-sharing networks and information and entertainment resources;
  • receive IP television, and quite high definition;
  • use local servers of providers.

ZyXEL Keenetic 4G is in no way inferior to routers or wireless routers in its capabilities, and some of them are even superior. Keenetic 4G, in addition, can be connected to VLAN-based services that operate according to the IEEE 802.1Q standard. ZyXEL Link Duo technology allows all devices on your home network to simultaneously access not only the World Wide Web, but also the regional network via a dedicated line. Thanks to TVport technology, the user has the opportunity to receive various IPTV channels without loss of quality. In the summer, thanks to the Keenetic 4G Internet center, you can provide yourself with mobile communications in your dacha, and in the winter, using a dedicated line, you can provide yourself with a mobile connection in your city apartment.

How to connect a laptop via Wi-Fi

In order to connect a laptop via Wi-Fi, we will use WPS technology for this.

Not all of us are experts in technologies such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Many people worry that they won’t be able to connect and make the necessary settings themselves. In fact, there is nothing complicated here. Even if this is your first time setting up and connecting the Internet and IP-TV on your own, you will not need the help of specialists. Any new user, regardless of his level of knowledge, will be able to configure ZyXEL Keenetic 4G, thanks to the program ZyXEL NetFriend and a new, convenient and, moreover, web configurator in Russian.

Modern Zyxel Keenetic routers from Android, iPhone or iPad can be configured in two ways:
1) Using the web interface;
2) Using applications.

Configuring a Zyxel router from a tablet/smartphone using the web interface.

This method is no different from setting up a router from a computer; you also connect to the Zyxel wireless network (the network name and password are indicated on the router sticker).

Open any browser on your mobile device (Crome, Opera, Mazzila, etc.), enter the IP address of the router 192.168.1.1 in the address bar and continue, just like you do on a computer. The only disadvantage of this method is inconvenience. The web interface is designed for a mouse cursor and keyboard; on a tablet, all the menus are small and it is not convenient to use with a finger.

Configuring Zyxel from a smartphone or tablet using applications.

For ease of setup from mobile devices, Zyxel has provided two applications with which you can quickly and conveniently perform setup. Applications are available both in the Play Market (Android) and in the App Store (iPhone, iPad). First of all, you need to download these applications on your smartphone or tablet. Finding them is quite simple, enter Zyxel in the store search engine and install ZyXEL Keenetic NetFriend And .

By using ZyXEL Keenetic NetFriend you can set up the Internet and update the router firmware. Using the second, change the wireless network settings, see who is connected to the router, select components to update, etc. After you have installed the applications on your smartphone or tablet, connect the Zyxel router to power and plug in the provider cable or 3G/4G modem.
To set up the Internet, run the ZyXEL Keenetic NetFriend application. You will see a message asking you to check if the router is connected.

Next, you need to connect to the router’s wireless network. For this:
or select a network and enter a password (the network name and password are indicated on the router sticker),

or use the QR code, to do this, select it in the menu and point the camera at the sticker on the router, where the QR code is shown.

After you have connected to the router, you will see a window for selecting providers based on your place of residence. If the application does not correctly determine your location and your provider is not available to you, click “Other city” and select your city or area. Then select the provider you use from the list.

After this, a window will appear in which you must enter your login and password to access the Internet (they are specified in the agreement with the provider).

If your provider is not in the list, configure the Internet manually by clicking the “Configure manually” button, select a protocol and specify the provider settings.

After the router gains access to the Internet, it will check the installed firmware version and if there is a newer one, it will offer to update. Click the "Device Update" button.

The download and installation of the firmware will begin, it will take a few minutes. You will eventually see a window telling you that the firmware has been updated. Click Next.

At the end of the setup, you will receive a window indicating the completion of the router setup.

If you do not want to make additional changes (change the wireless network name or password, update individual components), then you can stop there. Or open the second Zyxel My.Keenetic application. Select your wireless network, no need to enter a password.

A general menu will open in front of you.

I suggest going through each menu item and briefly telling you what you can do with it.
“Internet” in it you can change Internet settings or add a connection.

“Connection” displays who is connected to the router and in what way (via LAN or Wi-Fi).

“Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz”, some models will also have “Wi-Fi 5 GHz”, makes it possible to change the wireless network settings (change the network name, password, channel, etc.)

“Guest Wi-Fi” here you can use a guest wireless network and configure it (set a name, password, channel, etc.).

“USB” will display the USB devices connected to the router.

"Built-in software". Gives you the ability to turn update components on and off.

“System” Displays the main menus related to the operation of the router.

In my opinion, creating applications for configuring routers from smartphones and tablets is a very good solution. Only the implementation of this task gives Zyxel a double feeling, because why use two applications when it would be more reasonable to get by with one. On the other hand, in one application it may have looked more cumbersome, because most users are satisfied with setting up the Internet, they are of little interest in additional settings, and they will be quite satisfied with the easy-to-use ZyXEL Keenetic NetFriend.
