Which smartphone to choose in the year reviews. Nokia X Series smartphones

A revolution in the world of smartphones, breathtaking innovative technologies that can change the usual way of human life - isn’t this what everyone who is at all interested in what is happening in the IT industry wanted? If the answer to the question is affirmative, it is worth assuming that inflated expectations have collided with objective reality.

When it seemed that there was nowhere for the sensory heirs of mobile phones to grow, manufacturers persistently continued to accustom their users to giant gadgets. If the OnePlus One presented in April with a screen of five and a half inches was considered huge, a few months later flagships with already six-inch displays ceased to cause any complaints about the dimensions. The fashion trend that Apple once set has affected almost all famous vendors this year: their top gadgets received, if not a completely metal case, then at least a frame.

Flagship of the Year: Apple iPhone 6 [ ]

In Cupertino they could no longer ignore the worldwide gigantophony and once again announce tiny smartphones. What everyone was waiting for happened. The iPhone 6 screen has grown by more than half an inch compared to its predecessor. The amazingly thin and light device has been criticized for its protruding camera and its aluminum body has been bent and filmed, but that hasn't stopped Apple's flagship from being the best of the year. If anyone needs reasons, it’s worth checking out the detailed review of the winner on the virtual pages of iGuides.

Contenders: Lenovo VIBE Z2 Pro [ ] and Lumia 930

It's no easy task to expand the smartphone market, where everything has long been divided between A-brands, but electronics giant Lenovo managed to overtake its better-known rivals at the end of this year, taking third place in terms of sales after Samsung and Apple. The company's recipe for success has been devices that impress not just with performance, but also with battery life. Therefore, VIBE Z2 Pro with top-end characteristics and a battery of four thousand milliamp-hours deserves an honorable second place.

Nokia Lumia 930 became the latest Windows Phone flagship presented under the legendary Finnish brand. Fans of the “tiled” interface and devices running on it were pleased with a real premium gadget without reservations for an undemanding platform in the form of a budget processor. The bright colors of the case, which have long become the hallmark of Lumia devices, are edged with a metal side, which distinguishes the older model from the simplest devices in the family. The Finn has an excellent camera, a colorful FullHD display with proprietary ClearBlack technology, and hardware that is more than enough for stable and smooth operation of the Microsoft operating system.

Phablet of the Year: Samsung Galaxy Note 4 [ ]

Inspired by the success of the third generation Galaxy Note, this year Samsung announced an equally successful successor to the popular phablet. The device of the latest model has been improved both outside and inside, leaving only the diagonal the same. As a result, the Korean smartphone has become the best in its class.

Contenders: Huawei Ascend Mate 7 [ ]

Ascend Mate 7 was one of the most interesting new products at IFA this year. It turned out that the company, whose name contains the word “achievement,” knows how to make not only fashion devices, but also phablets. The device, with its own highlight, a fingerprint scanner on the back cover, turned out to be almost perfect and fully consistent with its price tag.

Another phablet with a fingerprint sensor turned out to be no less attractive to its target audience than the Flagship of the Year, with an impressive lifespan on a single battery charge.

Mid-range: Lenovo VIBE X2 [ ]

In addition to winning in its category, this smartphone may well qualify for the award for the most memorable design. VIBE X2, as if created from several thin sheets of polycarbonate, charmed the editors with both its appearance and capabilities.

Contenders: Nokia Lumia 830 [ ]

Another device with Modern UI was included in the list of the best smartphones according to the editors. Lumia 830 is the golden mean in the slender Nokia/Microsoft lineup. This is a camera phone with an optical image stabilization system, optimal hardware for Windows Phone 8.1 and similar to a flagship body with a metal frame.

The use of metal in the manufacture of the body of an affordable smartphone is a distinctive feature of the updated version of the former flagship Huawei P6S. An elegant smartphone with a high-quality display deservedly found itself in the top three middle class.

Budget: ASUS Zenfone 5 [ ]

The premiere of three Zenfone smartphones powered by Intel Atom brought ASUS the reputation of a manufacturer that knows a lot about affordable devices. The model with a five-inch display suited the largest number of users. Nice design, good price-to-feature ratio, regular system updates, which are rare for budget Android devices, are what helped Zenfone prevail over hundreds of competing gadgets.

Contenders: Fly Tornado Slim [ ]

Fly has made significant progress in the craft of smartphone manufacturing. An ultra-thin smartphone called “Slim” looks like a representative of the premium class, provides sufficient performance for solving everyday tasks and is unlikely to leave the fair sex indifferent.

A selfie smartphone from Nokia with a youthful design and a front camera that creates high-resolution self-portraits, after the rise in prices for electronics in December of this year, can offer its owners a very high level of performance for a device in the budget segment.

Best Chinese smartphone: Meizu MX4 [review forthcoming]

Chinese manufacturers have long been cramped in their homeland, so they are ready to conquer new countries. In any case, Meizu MX4 easily won the hearts of iGuides. Record performance indicators in synthetic tests, a smooth interface, a balanced appearance, an ultra-clear 2K display - how can one not give this miracle of technology first place?

Contenders: Xiaomi Mi4 and OnePlus One ( )

2014 was an extremely successful year for Meizu's main competitor, Xiaomi. Repeatedly, the press was full of headlines about how another vendor gadget was sold out in a matter of minutes. The flagship Mi4 has not yet officially reached the domestic market, but it rightfully deserves mention in this article - the smartphone has no obvious weaknesses at all.

Sometimes a bet on an aggressive promotional campaign turns out to be a winning one: a startup that a very limited number of people knew about in 2013 has managed to sell more than half a million “flagship killers.” More features for less money has become the motto of OnePlus. I would like to believe that next year this trend will continue to take over the world of electronics.

The most unusual smartphone: Samsung Galaxy Note Edge [ ]

Samsung continues to introduce flexible displays into its products. While the usefulness of the curved Galaxy Round might seem dubious, the Note Edge's curved display aims to become the new standard for next year's phablets, at least from Samsung. Large usable screen area means more possibilities. Now it's up to developers to find interesting ways to use the Touch Edge.

Contenders: BlackBerry Passport and Amazon Fire Phone

It takes courage to imagine a smartphone with a classic QWERTY keyboard. Especially if we are talking about a company that is losing its position year after year. However, reviews of the BlackBerry Passport with a square screen are entirely rave. When you get to know the gadget in person, the outlandish design at first glance becomes an advantage, and you absolutely don’t want to part with the BlackBerry creation, like with any passport.

In 2014, Amazon first tried its hand at producing smartphones. The Fire Phone did not gain popularity even among fans of the Kindle line, but was remembered for its sensors that track the position of the owner of the device in space. 3D effects may not have helped the creator of the “fiery” device take away laurels from Apple, but they helped one of the most unusual gadgets of the year.

In 2014, manufacturers continued the trend of producing “miniature” versions of their flagship models. This was done, for example, by Samsung, HTC and Sony, and Apple showed two iPhones at once in the fall: the large 6 Plus (5.5 inches) and a more compact one with a 4.7-inch screen. Vesti.Hitek selected the most significant representatives of this category of the outgoing of the year.

iPhone 6

Compared to last year's iPhone 5S, . Its screen size has grown from 4 to 4.7 inches, the body thickness has decreased from 7.6 to 6.9 millimeters, and the weight has increased from 112 to 129 grams. Despite the new proportions, iPhone 6 is comfortable to hold: the “smooth” design, combined with reduced thickness, ensures an excellent fit of the device in the hand.

A high-definition Retina display (1334x750 pixels), elegant appearance, a powerful 64-bit A8 chip with two cores and a high-quality camera make iPhone 6 one of the best smartphones on the market.

And yet, there is something to complain about. Firstly, compared to the 5S, the battery volume has increased from 1560 to 1810 mAh, but there is no real increase in battery life (apparently due to the larger screen and powerful hardware). At the same time, the 5.5-inch phablet 6 Plus received a much more capacious battery, as much as 2915 mAh. Secondly, the iPhone 6 camera does not have an optical image stabilization system, while the same 6 Plus has such a function. In addition, the NFC chip will be useless for Russian users, because Apple Pay only works in the US.

In the Apple online store, the simplest model of an “elite” smartphone (16 GB) is sold for 39,990 rubles. The option with a 64 GB drive will cost 46,990 rubles, with 128 GB – 52,990 rubles.

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

It is deservedly considered one of the best compact Android smartphones. Unlike the 5.2-inch flagship Z3, its screen is smaller (4.6"), but the hardware is no less powerful. Its trump cards: 4-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor (2.5 GHz), Adreno 330 graphics, 2 gigabytes of RAM, support for large microSD cards (128 GB) and LTE networks.

The Z3 Compact's angular design may not be to everyone's taste. However, it has the features of the Xperia series: a glass back cover, thin frames around the screen, high build quality. Finally, the mini-flagship is not afraid of moisture and dust, that is, it can be immersed in fresh water without harm and kept there for up to half an hour.

The device runs on Android 4.4.4, and an update to 5.0 (Lollipop) is guaranteed. When we tested the Z3 Compact, we liked almost everything about it, from its performance to its long-lasting battery. Perhaps the only disappointment was the quiet speakers. It is unlikely that you will not hear an incoming call, but it is better to listen to music only with headphones.

Z3 Compact is quite acceptable in terms of price/quality ratio. You can order it in Russian online stores for 22-23 thousand rubles.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha

By creating, the Koreans made an attempt to move away from the “plasticity” inherent in the Galaxy line. The most stylish Samsung smartphone has a metal frame, rounded corners, and a narrow chrome speaker grille. The back cover is covered with soft matte plastic. Taking the risk of experimenting, the company created a very attractive device, even somewhat similar to the iPhone.

The diagonal of the “alpha smartphone” is 4.7 inches. The screen matrix is made using Super AMOLED technology, but its resolution is not amazing - 1280x720. The filling of the smartphone with a “premium” design is almost flagship: 8-core Chia Exynos 5, Mali-T628 graphics, 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory. It does not have a microSD card slot.

The device borrowed a fingerprint scanner and a heart rate sensor from the flagship Galaxy S5. The battery capacity is small: 1860 mAh, but the reduced HD display resolution and energy-efficient platform allow the device to operate for a long time. In our tests, the Galaxy Alpha was able to continuously play video at full brightness for just over 7 hours.

Galaxy Alpha will cost about the same amount as the Xperia Z3 Compact: 22-23 thousand rubles.

Samsung Galaxy S5 mini

In design, hardware and even software, the Galaxy S5 mini is almost no different from its “big brother”. It has the same 4-core processor (but the frequency is lower: 1.4 versus 2.5 GHz for the full-size S5) and a comparable amount of RAM (1.5 versus 2 GB), which is quite enough for comfortable operation of almost any application. The device is also compatible with two SIM cards and is capable of operating within LTE networks.

The mini prefix, and not for the better, affected the display, which shrank from 5.1 to 4.5 inches, and the resolution dropped from Full HD to HD 1280x720 pixels. In addition, the compact alternative to the flagship is equipped with a less capacious battery (2100 mAh versus 2800) and an 8-megapixel camera (versus the 16-megapixel sensor of the S5), which cannot shoot 4K video.

Like the Galaxy Alpha and the larger S5, the mini smartphone comes with a fingerprint sensor that can be used to unlock the device and authorize payments, as well as a heart rate monitor. In Russian online stores, the S4 mini costs approximately 17 thousand rubles.

HTC One mini 2

It inherited the “premium” appearance of the flagship model: an aluminum body (which, however, is “diluted” with plastic around the edges), rounded corners, BoomSound speakers. Compared to last year’s HTC mini-smartphone, the display of its “reissue” has grown to 4.5 inches (like the Galaxy S5 mini), but the resolution remains the same (1280x720), and the density has decreased slightly: from 341 to 326 pixels. Moreover, the 5-inch flagship has a resolution of Full HD and a ppi parameter of 441.

The Taiwanese company had to sacrifice not only the screen. If the flagship received an “ultra-pixel” camera, then the mini 2 got a regular 13-megapixel photo module. The flagship RAM capacity has been reduced by half (to 1 GB), and in this parameter the HTC One mini 2 is inferior to almost all of its classmates, including the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini (1.5 GB) and Sony Xperia Z1 Compact (2 GB).

Despite some concessions, One mini 2 turned out to be a pretty good compact device, with an impressive design and powerful sound. You can buy it for 17-19 thousand rubles.

Huawei Ascend P6S

At an affordable price - approximately 13 thousand rubles. The smartphone's hardware is quite average. The “Chinese” is equipped with a 4.7-inch screen (720x1280), an 8-megapixel camera, a 4-core (Cortex-A9) HiSilicon chip and Mali 450-MP4 graphics. The amount of RAM is 2 GB.

The smartphone's assets include its small thickness (6.5 mm), support for two active SIM cards (that is, you can, for example, receive two calls at once and switch between them) and the ability to work with gloves, which is especially important in the winter months.

Among the disadvantages: a small amount of built-in memory (16 GB, in fact about 12 GB is available), and you cannot connect microSD cards to it. I would also like a larger battery capacity. The built-in (and non-removable) 2000 mAh battery is enough to watch HD video for about 5.5 hours.

Fly Tornado Slim

It will appeal to people who love very thin and at the same time inexpensive smartphones. Officially, this model is the thinnest (5.15 millimeters) among those currently officially sold in the world. Moreover, such a case could accommodate an 8-core MediaTek chip with a frequency of 1.7 GHz, ensuring stable operation of games and resource-intensive applications.

But we had to save on support for two SIM cards, RAM (1 GB) and flash memory: the Tornado Slim has a 16 GB drive, of which 11 GB are available to the user. For obvious reasons, the Fly Tornado Slim’s battery is not the most capacious - 2050 mAh; more would not fit into such a thin body.

The new product costs 13 thousand rubles, like the Ascend P6S. The Huawei device beats the Fly in some characteristics, without being inferior in price, but it is one and a half millimeters thicker than the new product.

The fact that nothing under the sun lasts forever is an indisputable fact; the obsolescence of things is a natural process in the world of rapidly developing technologies and there is no escape from it. It's just that some things are retired faster than others.

Mobile devices are the most susceptible to obsolescence. What was presented almost as an innovation a year ago today does not evoke any special emotions and rests peacefully on the shelves of stores whose owners turned out to be not so successful in trading matters.

However, among mobile phones there are also models that, even after a decent period of time, remain in demand. It is precisely to such long-livers that we dedicate this review.
