Pyrzowice is an international airport in the Polish city of Katowice, the capital of the Silesian Voivodeship. The official name is Międzynarodowy Port Lotniczy Katowice-Pyrzowice.

Construction of the airfield began in 1940 by German troops. Until 1966, when the first passenger flight was carried out by LOT aircraft on the Katowice-Warsaw route, the airfield was used first by the German, and then by the Soviet and Polish military.

^^ First passenger terminal

By the end of 1969, the first passenger terminal, taxiways and apron in front of the terminal were built. The airport served only domestic flights. In 1976, a record number of passengers were served - almost 120 thousand.

In order to develop air transportation, the authorities of the Silesian Voivodeship decided to found the joint stock company Górnośląskie Towarzystwo Lotnicze S.A., which became the management company in 1994.

Thanks to the management of GTL S.A., LOT-Polish Airlines resumed flights from Katowice to Warsaw in 1992, and in 1993 the German Lufthansa launched the first international flight in the airport's history, connecting Katowice to Frankfurt.

Traffic began to slowly increase. In 2003, the airport management and low-cost airline Wizz Air Hungary held negotiations to begin a partnership.

With Poland's accession to the European Union and the Open Skies program in 2004, the republic's airspace became open to all European air carriers. It was at this moment that Wizz Air Hungary began air transportation from the airport, increasing passenger traffic in Pyrzowice by 2.5 times in 1 year from 258 thousand passengers in 2003 to 623 thousand in 2004.

At the end of 2008, the airport served 2.4 million passengers, about 75% of passengers on regular flights were transported by Wizz Air Hungary aircraft.

Katowice Airport in Pyrzowice is a unique example of constructive cooperation between an airline and an airport.

Thanks to this, the airport was able to increase passenger traffic several times and began to develop infrastructure.

Now Katowice Airport ranks third among Polish airports in terms of passenger traffic and has a chance to become second in 2009.

Katowice Airport in Pyrzowice has 1 runway with a length of 2800 m and a width of 60 m of category ILS I, as well as 3 aprons with parking for aircraft of the Airbus A320, Boeing 747 class.

The runway is located at an altitude of 303 m above sea level and due to this, the airport experiences only a few non-flying days a year due to weather conditions.

During 2009-2014 it is planned to build a cargo terminal, further expand the apron and build a new runway, which will have a length of 3600 m and ILS II category. The old strip will be used as a taxiway.

Katowice Airport in Pyrzowice has two passenger terminals, which are combined into one complex with an area of 21.3 thousand square meters. m and form a single whole.

Terminal A is the very first terminal at the airport, serving flights beyond the borders of the Schengen countries.

^^ Passenger Terminal B

Terminal B is a new part, put into operation in 2007. Has 3 levels. Serves flights operating within the Schengen area.

The total number of check-in counters is 35, 9 aviation security control points, 14 boarding gates.

Where can you eat at Katowice Airport?

There are about 20 small shops and catering outlets (fast food, cafes, restaurants) in the terminals. Prices are comparable to city prices. Lunch can cost 10-30 zlotys depending on the menu choice.

Restaurants and cafes are located on the 2nd floor of terminals A (the very first and oldest restaurant at the airport) and B.

The pharmacy is located on the 1st floor in the central part of the terminal.

The airport offers discount programs for flying to/from Katowice Airport. The programs provide the opportunity to receive discounts in hotels or the Katowice shopping center, or directly at the airport when paying for parking, in cafes or duty-free stores (discounts of about 5-10%. Up to 50% discount on parking fees).
