Apple watch sizes. Which Apple Watch to buy: comparison of characteristics of current models

We all loved this smart Apple Watch, but even the most devoted fans of this manufacturer are already confused about the difference between series 1, 2 and 3. If there are practically no external differences and the first series is similar to the third, then the most important changes lie inside. And the characteristics may differ significantly. Let's try to figure out what the difference is and which watch is right for you.

To clearly and clearly see what the difference is, we will create a table where we compare 1, 2 and 3 series according to their characteristics. And then we’ll tell you about all the differences in more detail.

As we can see from the table, with each series the watches became better, faster and smarter. If in the first watch there was not enough processor power and the watch could freeze, then in the second series they made a dual-core processor.

Appearance of Apple smart watch:

The iWatch Series 1 was released in four colors (Silver, Gold, Rose Gold and Space Gray). 2 types of sizes - 38 and 42 mm. The body is made of aluminum.

Apple Watch Series 2 has become a little thicker (almost a millimeter), the color scheme remains the same. But in this series, in addition to aluminum, stainless steel and ceramics are used. A sports series with a bright design also appeared - Nike + with special sports functions.

Watch Series 3. Same case with the same colors. Similar to Watch 2 in design and color.

Apple watch display.

The first and second and even the third series did not undergo significant differences in the display. All watch series use OLED technology. Screen brightness. In Apple Watch 2nd and 3rd generations, the screen became twice as bright - 1000 nits versus 450 in Series 1. The display resolution did not change.

Water protection.

Series 2 and 3 can be safely immersed in water to a depth of 50 meters and nothing will happen to them. In the third series, water training appeared, so you can safely go to the pool and set records in 50 and 100 meter swims. But don't forget to click on the special drop icon to activate the waterproof mode. After water procedures, the watch itself will push out excess water. The very first model could only withstand splashes and is afraid of immersion in water.

Processor and memory.

In the first watch, the main drawback was a rather weak processor, which was developed by Apple and was called S1. This is a single-core processor with a frequency of 520 MHz. Its power is barely enough for applications and comfortable work. In the second and third series, this drawback was taken into account and a new dual-core processor was created, which was called S2. 512 MB of RAM turned out to be enough for any tasks and applications, so both in the first and in the second watch the amount of RAM is the same. Due to new features and more resource-intensive applications in the third series, the memory capacity was increased to 768MB.

With GPS or not?

Apple Watch 1 is completely dependent on the iPhone and therefore they used data from the smartphone. Apple has equipped the second and third Watch with a GPS module - now you can track the distance traveled directly on the watch. Feel free to go for a walk and leave your phone at home. Running with a smartphone is also not convenient, so GPS is a very important improvement in series 2 and 3.

Battery in a watch.

This is the main drawback of perhaps all watches and the Watch is no exception. It is not possible to fit a large battery into a small case. The battery life of the watch will only last for a day, and if you do not charge it before bed, you will only be able to use the watch for a couple of hours the next day. In the second and third series there is a slight increase in battery capacity. Most likely, this is due to the advent of GPS. It consumes some additional energy, and in order for the second and third generations of watches to work no less than the previous one, the battery had to be slightly larger.

What is the difference between Apple Watch Series 2 and Series 3?

Most recently, Apple presented the 3rd generation watch - let's take a look at what the company has been working on for the whole year and what has changed since the Watch Series 2? This time we will do without a comparison table, because Apple in the 3rd generation of its watches also added a model with a built-in SIM card, which means we have to compare as many as 6 “different” devices! Considering the fact that the dimensions have remained virtually unchanged (a couple of millimeters does not count), we will focus exclusively on the most important differences between Series 3 and Series 2.

So, what's new in the 2017 Apple Watch 3?

Is there a version with LTE now? this is the most important difference. True, it is absolutely useless for us - this function does not work in Russia yet, although telecom operators are already thinking about introducing it in Russia. The fact is that the watch uses a built-in SIM card - our operators do not yet provide such services and capabilities.

  1. Design element. By the way, the version with LTE has one fundamental difference in terms of design - the scroll wheel now has a red dot! A distinctive feature of the Watch Series 3 LTE is the red scroll wheel
  2. CPU. Of course, the Apple Watch Series 3 received a new S3 processor (which is said to be 70% faster than the Series 2), as well as a special microchip for wireless communication - W2 (similar to that used in AirPods).
  3. RAM. The RAM value also increased to 768 MB (in the second generation it was 512 MB).
  4. Inner memory. For the version without LTE, nothing has changed; the size of the internal storage is still 8 GB. But Series 3 with a SIM card will receive an increased volume - 16 GB.
  5. Barometric altimeter. Now the watch can count how many floors you have ascended or descended.
  6. Bluetooth 4.2. The blue tooth version has become a little higher (in Series 2 - Bluetooth 4.0). What's the plus? Data transfer speed increases. Considering that a lot of data is first downloaded to the iPhone, and then via Bluetooth to the Apple Watch, this will obviously not be superfluous. Nothing else has changed - these are the same good Apple Watch Series 2. With water protection, GPS, promised operating time 18 hours (with mixed use), etc. So which Watch should you choose - first, second or third generation?

Comparison of Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 3.

Actually, after all these comparisons, this is the most important question. Considering the fact that Apple releases new models approximately once a year, now we will find out what watch to buy in 2017-2018?

Which smartwatch should you choose: Apple Watch Series 3 or Series 2?

APPLE WATCH 3 or APPLE WATCH 2

Smartwatches are becoming more and more sophisticated, and you now have quite a wide range of choices, depending on whether you have an iPhone or an Android phone.

If you're thinking about buying an Apple Watch, you'll need an iPhone because smartwatches aren't compatible with devices running the Android operating system.

Let's assume that this is not an obstacle for you, we present to your attention a comparative review of the Apple Watch 3 and Apple Watch 2 smart watches.

What is the difference between APPLE WATCH 2 and 3?

In short, the Series 3 smartwatch has a faster processor and optional built-in 4G. In all other respects, the new watch is practically no different from the Apple Watch 2.

Undoubtedly, painstaking engineering work has been done, thanks to which the developers were able to accommodate LTE technology without resorting to increasing the size of the device. From the point of view of the average user there is no difference in size.

It is worth clarifying that when purchasing an Apple Watch 3 smart watch, two options are available: a model with only a built-in GPS module and a model with GPS + LTE.

There are a huge variety of versions available, including Nike+, Hermes and Edition (with ceramic case), as well as two sizes: 38mm and 42mm. This means that prices will vary significantly. And due to the fact that the version with a built-in LTE cellular module requires a connection, you will additionally have to pay monthly for mobile operator services, which are not included in the price of the device.

The table below briefly summarizes the main differences between Apple Watch 3 and Apple Watch 2. To make it easier for you to make your choice, we included both versions of the new Apple Watch 3 in the comparison.

Which APPLE WATCH model is worth purchasing?

As you can see, the presence of a 4G modem is a feature that defines the key difference between the Apple Watch 3 and Apple Watch 2 smart watches. This technology automatically uses the built-in e-SIM if the smart watch is far from your iPhone, so you can receive and make calls and exchange messages.

All of these services are available on the same phone number that the iPhone uses, so you don't have to maintain two phone numbers at once. However, adding Watch 3 to your plan will cost you an extra $10 per month (the first six months are free). The bad news is that at launch the technology will only be available in the UK and some other countries with EE coverage.

You can purchase a contract version of the Apple Watch 3 directly through mobile operator EE, or from other retailers including Apple, John Lewis and Currys, and then connect the new product to the EE network (provided EE is already your mobile operator ).

If you're a customer of another carrier, you'll need to upgrade to EE in order to be able to use the Apple Watch 3's cellular features. Otherwise, you'll just have to wait until your exclusive contract expires and other carriers join the service as well.

US users can buy a new product from an official Apple distributor or from other distributors, and then synchronize the device with their network: the service is supported by Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T.

Don't forget that the Apple Watch 3 LTE doesn't support roaming, so any additional features enabled via e-SIM won't work overseas.

In addition to connectivity, the Series 3 smartwatch gets an updated processor. Apple developers claim that it is up to 70 percent faster than the previous one. And this is great news for the future, as applications become more and more demanding on processor power.

Also, the updated processor allowed the voice assistant Siri to speak. In the previous model, Siri could only show messages or search results on the display. So this is a very useful improvement.

You can no longer purchase the Apple Watch 2 through Apple's official website, but the device is still available in many stores. Prices haven't dropped since launch, meaning the new Apple Watch 3 model without cellular is even cheaper than the previous model. So before sellers begin to reduce prices on Apple Watch 2 in order to sell off stocks, it’s worth taking a closer look at the Apple Watch Series 3, which has twice the amount of built-in memory (16GB versus 8GB).

If prices do drop significantly and you don't really need 4G, you'll be able to grab the Series 2 at a much lower price than the Series 3. However, don't forget that the Series 3 has a faster processor and more memory. twice as large and has a built-in altimeter (to measure the height of the climb).

The Series 1 smartwatch is still available on Apple's website with a price tag of $249, so it's unlikely you'll be able to find the Series 2 for less than that. Therefore, your purchase choice directly depends on how highly you rate the new features of the Apple Watch 3.

Conclusion

Apple has set a lower price tag for Series 3 than for the previous Series 2 model, while equipping the new product with increased memory and a faster processor. You'll have to pay more for the version with built-in 4G, but this feature gives you the ability to use your watch even when you don't have your iPhone with you.

The Series 3 is the clear winner between the two models being compared, unless you can find the Series 2 at an incredible discount.

My colleague Mikk Seed was passionate about the Apple Watch Sport. According to my observations, the most popular model, especially in the “space gray” color. I used to wear these myself until I upgraded to the second series.

I purchased the steel ones in black with a Milanese mesh bracelet. And, I tell you, this is heaven and earth.

Keep four reasons why if you buy an Apple Watch, then only the steel ones.

All photos were taken on a Samsung Galaxy S8+.

Appearance

The steel Apple Watch looks expensive and solid. Compared to them, aluminum ones look like a Chinese counterfeit or an ordinary fitness bracelet.

Silver ones are spectacular, but catchy - they sparkle and shimmer in the light. In my opinion, too much.

I chose black ones - more restrained, but no less cool.

They are similar to the iPhone Jet Black and make an excellent tandem with it. The screen smoothly flows into the deep black body and merges with it. With a Milanese mesh or block bracelet, this effect is further enhanced.

They seem to be one with the clock.

Sapphire crystal is more reflective in the sun than the Ion-X glass in the Apple Watch Sport. But there are no problems with readability in the second generation.

The screen has become twice as bright, so everything is clearly visible even under the scorching sun.

The steel Apple Watch looks great with both a business suit and a sports suit. I can’t say the same about the Apple Watch Sport.

It’s like wearing sports sneakers with a three-piece suit. It's a matter of taste, but on the hand they look like a plastic trinket. Until you take it in your hand and feel the chill, you can’t believe it’s aluminum.

Steel ones are more versatile and will suit any wardrobe. The main thing is to choose the right strap.

Straps

The second advantage is the variety of straps. Not everyone looks good with a sporty Apple Watch.

Milanese mesh and block bracelets, leather strap with classic buckle are suitable only for steel ones. Moreover, the silver model has the advantage - almost all expensive straps have silver steel elements.

For black steel Apple Watches, the choice is not so large. I took it straight away with the Milanese loop and never regretted it.

It looks beautiful and interesting, the hand does not sweat. It goes with any clothes and, most importantly, does not tear the hair on your arm. This scared me, but in the end everything worked out.

The only thing is that it is inconvenient to play sports with such a strap. For these purposes, I took a black sports one from Nike. Due to the holes in it, it’s not so hot during training and it’s not a shame to wear it just like that. It looks unusual and goes well with holey jeans.

As for the Apple Watch Sport, only sports, nylon and Nike are suitable. The rest are not for everybody, but most often they are out of place.

Wear resistance

The steel Apple Watch gets scratched, and that's really a downside. But it all depends on how carefully you wear them. Several months later, my Apple Watch is still like new, including the steel magnetic clasp on the band.

The black case hides such flaws, so I recommend the steel Apple Watch in this design.

And after six months they can be polished and they will be like new.

Aluminum Apple Watch is more practical, but if you knock or scratch it, the chips will not go away. The steel Apple Watch uses the right materials - a sandwich made of sapphire glass, ceramic and steel.

I'd like to see something like this in the next iPhone.

Weight

In his post, Mikk listed the weight of the Apple Watch Sport as a plus. They are lighter than steel - 30 versus 50 grams. I consider this a disadvantage.

Both models do not stretch the hand, but the steel ones feel pleasant on the hand. It feels like a thing.

It’s comfortable to play sports in them, and your hand doesn’t get tired by the end of the day.

The aluminum Apple Watch is too light and feels like a toy. It’s as if he took his daughter’s watch and drove it.

Steel or aluminum?

If you weigh the pros and cons, steel is better than aluminum. The only question is the price.

Are you ready to pay 50 thousand for a smart watch? If so, then get a steel Apple Watch and don't skimp on a good strap. If you don’t want to spend that amount of money on an accessory, the Apple Watch Sport is your choice.

They look simpler, but they do the same thing.

So both points of view have their place, it’s a matter of taste.

Smartwatches have been doing well in the market for a long time now. Of course, the Apple Watch feels the best. If you are going to buy them in the near future and do not know which color to choose, then you have come to the right place.

Let's consider in general what colors there are. Next, I’ll give you a couple of recommendations that will definitely be useful to you. So it will be very interesting and, most importantly, useful.

What colors are there for Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2?

As you know, two generations of these wonderful watches have already been released, and despite the fact that they have to be charged often, people use them and are quite satisfied.

And why not, because they look very great and, most importantly, there is a very large selection of colors when purchasing.

Do not confuse the color of the watch case (also material) and the strap. There are much fewer colors of the case and in fact this is the base of the watch. You buy them, and then buy the necessary straps.

In general, there are these colors:

  1. Silver Aluminum Case (Series 1 and 2);
  2. Space Gray Aluminum Case (Series 1 and 2);
  3. Rose Gold Aluminum Case (Series 1 and 2);
  4. Gold Aluminum Case (Series 1 and 2);
  5. Space Black Stainless Steel Case (Series 2);
  6. Stainless Steel Case (Series 2);
  7. White Ceramic Case (Series 2).

This is roughly the choice we have, and now we will decide what is best to take and why. Surely you already liked some color.

Choosing the Apple Watch color for a future purchase

As you understand, it was not for nothing that I wrote about the material from which the watch is made. Both the visual sensations and the price depend on this.

The price for the first to fourth options is $269, the fifth and sixth are $549, the last is $1,249. All these prices correspond to the options with straps in the pictures above. In fact, these are the most popular straps.

I will tell you about my logic of choice, and then you can decide for yourself whether this tactic suits you or not. I have plans to buy this watch and I will do something like this.

First option. You need to choose a very neutral color for the case, under which you can easily mix new straps.

Therefore, for myself I can highlight such options as Silver Aluminum Case, Space Gray Aluminum Case, Space Black Stainless Steel Case and Stainless Steel Case.

Silver and black have always been classics. In fact, any strap will fit almost perfectly under them. Suitable for both sportswear and a more business style.

Option two. Rose Gold Aluminum Case and Gold Aluminum Case are very specific colors and they are not suitable for everyone.

If the first color is clear, it is more suitable for girls. Then the second option can suit both boys and girls.

With guys, everything is quite complicated, because some are simply infatuated with the color of gold, while others simply cannot stand it. It's up to you to decide.

Option three. White Ceramic Case is the most expensive model. Of course, such a high price is due only to ceramics.

If you like white and can handle the price, then why not. The white color goes with any clothes and the choice of straps is also very large for this model.

conclusions

As you can see, there are a lot of options for you. I hope my prioritization will allow you to decide which Apple Watch color will be best for you.

We will wait for new updates, because quite a lot of time has passed since the presentation of the second series. Perhaps they will come up with something even more original.

While reading the characteristics of the Apple Watch, you probably noticed that the company offers two variations of the watch in size – 38mm and 42mm. Someone hastened to call them male and female; naturally, a smaller size will look better on a miniature female hand. True, in reality you will not find much difference. A reasonable question arises, which option to prefer?

And here Apple decided to offer maximum comfort in choosing a smart watch. If you go to the Apple Store, you can find a section there that helps you imagine the actual dimensions of wearable electronics. You need a tab Shop, where there is a separate section Apple Watch. Learn More the link is under each device model and it will open the key for you Compare case size and View Pricing.

The application will open the original size of the smartwatch, and it does not matter what screen size the image is displayed on. By placing your smartphone on your hand, you can see how this or that accessory will look on your hand.

Dimensions and weight

Apple Watch Sport: 38mm vs 42mm

In addition, we offer you various variations of straps and bracelets, where the most affordable is a rubber strap at $49, and for a metal analogue you will have to pay $449. I was pleasantly surprised by the relatively low prices of magnetic chargers - $29-$39.
