We make an installation flash drive. Instructions for creating a bootable USB flash drive on Windows

One of the most pressing questions among home users and beyond. A bootable flash drive or USB hard drive can bypass the use of an optical drive, and can also be carried with you if you frequently install systems or repair computers. After all, manufacturers have already stopped equipping their devices - netbooks and ultrabooks - with optical drives. If there is no disk drive, you can reinstall the system only by booting from the installation flash drive. To create such media, the easiest way is to use a special utility. You can write anything to such a USB drive: ERD Commander, a program for working with a hard drive like Paragon or Acronis, as well as an image with Windows, MacOS, etc.

In order to make a bootable USB flash drive from an ISO image necessary (ISO image is a copy of the installation disk in a special container with the ISO extension):

The program will automatically process the ISO image and make bootable USB flash drive, with which you can later install the OS on your computer without using a CD/DVD-ROM or download an image of a portable version of your favorite OS and install it so that it is always at hand. Also, the YUMI utility, which is an analogue of UNetBootin, does a good job of recording images.

How to create/burn an ISO image

It is worth noting that you can create an ISO image from a finished DVD or CD containing a distribution kit with Windows or another necessary program using the CDBurnerXP program. Launch the application and select the item in the main menu "Copy disc". Specify your installation disk in the drive as the source, and to save the finished ISO image, a folder on your hard drive. Click on the button "Copy disc". With this program you can burn previously saved images to optical discs. Having created the image, you can use it to transfer it to a flash drive or memory card using the above-mentioned programs.

Bootable USB flash drive with antivirus

You can check the system for malware by running an antivirus program from a removable device (flash card, portable hard drive, etc.) if Windows has stopped loading at all. I recommend using the following software as a portable antivirus for bootable flash drive: Kaspersky Rescue Disk and Dr.Web LiveUSB. These antiviruses have been tested in practice more than once and have proven themselves well. By following these links you can download the application for recording the antivirus; you will only need a flash drive with a capacity of at least 512 MB. If you want to load some other antivirus or scanner program from a flash drive or USB HDD, having an ISO image, then use.

Windows Emergency Boot

Let's say Windows doesn't start, and you need to save your personal data. If no means help restore the system, then it is best to use the ERD Commander distribution kit (for Windows 7 32bit, Windows 7 64bit and Windows XP 32bit) and an external HDD. ERD Commander is a set of programs that allow you to boot the system from removable media, which makes it possible to start your computer even if the OS files are completely damaged. Burn the ISO file using UNetBootin to a USB flash drive or any program for burning images to disk (ImgBurn, Ashampoo Burning Studio or Nero Burning Rom) at minimum speed and boot the system from it. The interface of this bootloader is in Russian and is intuitive. We call the file manager and get access to the hard drive. We mark all the files that need to be saved and open the external HDD to copy the data to it. There is a risk that you have copied a virus to your hard drive. Therefore, before transferring data to a new Windows system, be sure to install an antivirus and check the files on your portable HDD.

Instructions for installing a bootloader on a flash drive

Booting a computer from a USB flash drive or other removable media

In order for your computer to start from a CD, DVD, flash drive or external USB drive when rebooted or turned on, you need to make changes to the BIOS settings. Most modern motherboards provide the ability boot from USB flash drive, but on older models sometimes you can only enable booting from optical discs. This problem in some cases can be solved by installing the latest BIOS version, but for very old motherboards such updates may not be released.

After turning on the PC, go to the BIOS by pressing the key "Del" or "F2". Then find the appropriate menu items, indicating the boot order and devices used for this. Depending on the manufacturer and BIOS version, this can be done in the sections "Boot" or "Advanced BIOS features". In addition, modern motherboards allow you to specify the device from which the system will boot without reconfiguring the BIOS. To do this, when you start the PC, you need to call "boot menu". As a rule, this can be done with the key "F12".

Hello, friends! Today we’ll talk again about creating a bootable USB flash drive.

How to create a bootable USB device? For what purpose should I use it and what program should I use to record it?

A brief overview of the five most popular and free programs for creating a bootable USB flash drive.

Modern developments do not stand still, and yesterday's technologies are slowly but surely losing their relevance. So the once popular CDs and DVDs no longer seem like such a clear solution for storing, transferring and working with information. High data reading speed, versatility and reusability are just a small part of all the advantages of a flash drive as a bootable medium over disks. Already today, almost all personal computers and laptops, if they are no more than ten years old, support the ability to boot from USB devices. And in some cases (for example, a netbook), a flash drive may be the only boot device from an external drive.

By the way, the new Windows 10 operating system will be the first axis, the distribution of which will be officially distributed on a USB drive. And if you suddenly need to recover files from a flash drive, read about it. I also recommend paying attention to, which will help you take your mind off everyday work and lift your spirits.

With the help of additional software, a flash drive can be used not only as a boot device for installing, reinstalling and restoring the operating system, but also to create an emergency device (Multiboot). This is a kind of resuscitator, a tool from which you can boot at any time and cure your computer of viruses, restore system files or save important data. I described how to create such a flash drive resuscitator in the article “Creating a bootable Live CD/DVD/USB device and its use.” You can read this article.

Despite all the obvious advantages and the growing popularity of a flash drive as a bootable device, there are not so many programs for creating it. Nevertheless, they exist, and today I will introduce you to them in more detail, but first a few words about the preparatory stage.

Preparing a flash drive

We will need the flash drive itself, plus knowledge of some important aspects. First, you need to make sure that your computer supports booting from USB devices. There is a misconception that if in the bios (boot section) there is no option to select boot from usb (there are only floppi, hdd and dvd-rom options), then boot from usb is not supported. This is wrong!

More precisely, this is not always the case. The only correct solution is to refer to the manual (user manual) of your motherboard or using specialized software (AIDA64 as an option) to obtain a detailed report on the hardware used.

The second point is the size of the flash drive. Here everything will depend on what we write on it. For example, to create a Live-USB, Linux or Windows 7 installation disk, a 4 GB flash drive is enough. To create a bootable device with the latest versions of Windows, it is advisable to have a flash drive of at least 8 GB on hand.

The third point is transferring files from a flash drive. Typically, the process of creating a boot device involves completely formatting it. If there are important files on the flash drive, transfer them to another device in advance. To create a bootable USB flash drive and then work with it as a boot device, use the USB-2.0 port (Windows 7 does not support USB 3.0).

How to create a bootable USB flash drive

Let's look at five different methods using five free programs for Windows as an example.

A small but quite functional utility with the self-explanatory name WinSetupFromUSB. Equally well suited for recording a bootable and/or multiboot flash drive (up to 10 operating systems) and creating Live devices. Official site .

Among the shortcomings is the lack of support for the Russian language. Among the advantages, as I already said, is its versatility. The utility can work not only with Windows distributions, but is also suitable for burning an installation disk with Linux.

The usual option for creating a bootable flash drive, for example, with a Windows distribution, involves selecting the flash drive itself, the option to automatically format the media, and the ISO image of the operating system in the appropriate boxes. The recording process starts after pressing the “Go” button. You can read more about how this program works.

To create a multiboot flash drive (several OS), you need to specify the path to the ISO images of the operating systems. At the time of writing this article, the Windows 10 selection item is missing by default, but in reality everything is written and works, you just need to select the appropriate box with the available versions - Vista, 7, 8.

2. Rufus

Perhaps the simplest solution for creating bootable USB drives. Everything is simple and intuitive. Suitable for working on systems that do not have an installed OS. Official site rufus.akeo.ie.

The main advantages are speed, simple interface, Russian language. An excellent solution if you need to create a bootable Windows 10 USB flash drive with UEFI support. By the way, I wrote in detail about how to do this in.

Distributed in the format of a regular installer and a portable version. To create a bootable USB flash drive, in the utility window you need to specify the path to the ISO image to be written and click the “Start” button.

On new systems that use UEFI instead of BIOS, set the Partition Scheme and System Interface Type menu to GPT for computers with UEFI.
In other cases, the default settings will be sufficient. The option to format the flash drive is assigned by default.

3. Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool

This utility is an official application from Microsoft. The interface is minimalistic, simple and clear, it is easy to work with. Download from the official website wudt.codeplex.com.

Perhaps the name of the utility (Windows 7 USB) will mislead many that with its help you can only write the Windows 7 distribution to removable media. However, this is not the case. In addition to the seventh version, Windows 8.1 and 10 distributions can be stored on a flash drive.

The downside is that the utility is not Russified, but the simple and intuitive interface is designed to offset this drawback.

All that is required from the user is to insert a USB drive in advance, select an ISO image with the operating system and specify the path to the media (flash drive) to which this image should be deployed.

The operating principle of this program is based on standard tools of the Windows operating system - these are “diskpart”, “bootsect /nt60”, unpacking ISO onto a flash drive. The program acts only as a graphical interface.

UltraISO is one of the best and most functional programs for working with disk images. A universal “harvester” that supports work with almost any known formats. Can work in tandem with Nero Burning Rom and integrates with virtual emulators. It will help if the boot disk image is not in ISO format.

The program can convert other image formats into ISO files - NRG, MDF, MDS, IMG, CCD, etc. With UltraISO you can edit ISO files without unpacking them. The UltraISO interface has been translated into many languages, including Russian. For downloading, you are offered several editions of UltraISO, adapted for individual versions of Windows, as well as a portable version of the program. Download link www.ezbsystems.com.

By and large, the program does not care what boot devices will be created with its help, with what operating system, what software and from what manufacturer. The ISO image to be burned must be opened in the program window either using the Open command in the File menu or using the browse button on the toolbar. This can also be done using the Ctrl + O key combination.

Then in the window that appears, if the program automatically selects the desired flash drive, you should click the “Burn” button.

Daemon Tools Ultra is a professional tool for working with images. The program itself is familiar to many users from the free Lite version, which allows you to mount virtual drives for reading disk images. Its more functional version - Daemon Tools Ultra - offers, among other features, the creation of boot devices.

Among the disadvantages, it is worth noting that it is paid, but to create a bootable flash drive, you can download a free 20-day trial version on the program’s official website. Official website of the program.

Go to the official website and download the program. During installation (installation), you need to select a trial license type.

The program works with a huge number of disk image formats and can be used both to create a boot device with subsequent installation of the operating system, and to restore it (Live disk).

To create a bootable flash drive, in the main window of Daemon Tools Ultra, select the “Tools” menu item, and among its commands is “Write bootable image to USB”. Or the hotkey combination Ctrl+B.

In the recording parameters window, specify the path to the image, enable the MBR overwrite option and click “Start”.

When the flash drive is ready, all that remains is to boot from it. The easiest way is to use the boot menu keys. The table below shows a clear example of such keys.

Of course, this is not the entire list of programs designed to create bootable devices, but for the vast majority of users, the capabilities and functionality of the listed software will be sufficient.

For example, the Rufus program can be used as the simplest and fastest tool for creating a bootable USB drive with one Windows distribution or for flashing BIOS from DOS.

I will show you 4 ways to help you make a bootable USB flash drive. It is usually needed to install Windows OS or for a program if it runs before the system boots.

There are many programs to solve this problem, but sometimes you can get by using the system. I will provide instructions that will help you make a bootable USB flash drive with any version of Windows or program. 4 methods, 2 universal and 2 for specific OS.

But before that you need to prepare. You will need:

  1. Flash drive with a capacity of 4 GB or more.
  2. Image ( iso) operating system or program for which a bootable USB flash drive will be created.

Before creating a bootable USB flash drive, be sure to format it to avoid errors.

Bootable USB flash drive in Windows OS

You can do without third-party programs and do everything in Windows. To do this you will have to use a number of commands. I will demonstrate only the most necessary ones.

First clear your device of all files. To do this, go to the execution line ( Win+R) from the Start menu >> Run, and then enter the command diskpart as in the image below.

In the window that appears, enter list disk to see all devices for further work with them.

In my example, there were 2 devices:

  1. 0 - hard drive.
  2. 1 - flash drive.

It is very easy to distinguish a flash drive from hard drives by size. Select it with the command select disk 1.

Be careful, there may be another number instead of 1.

After this, you need to create a primary partition. To do this, enter create partition primary.

Select a section by entering select partition 1 and activate it with the command active.

Then set the letter to the carrier ( automatically) by entering assign and finish the job Exit.

Now be sure to download the files to the USB flash drive unpacked. If you just copy the iso file, nothing will work.

If you don’t understand something, you can watch a video on how to do it using a real example.

What did you use to create a bootable USB flash drive?

A large number of modern laptop models are produced without an optical drive. In such conditions, a bootable Windows 7 flash drive becomes the main method and most used tool for installing the operating system.

To create a bootable Windows USB flash drive, you must have:

  1. ISO image of the operating system;
  2. Removable media with a capacity of 4 GB;
  3. A motherboard that supports booting from a flash drive.

Important Note: The drive should be connected via USB 2.0 interface. Windows 7 does not support USB 3.0 (it is usually colored blue inside) during installation, and therefore, when trying to boot through this interface, the user will see an error message.

Programs for preparing a bootable Windows 7 flash drive can be distributed either free of charge or for a significant amount. Using free software in this case is absolutely justified - the utility will cope with its functions perfectly, and you will solve all your problems without spending anything except time.

Let's take a closer look at how to make a bootable Windows 7 flash drive using utilities specially designed for this.

Important Note: Some programs require the user to have administrator rights to perform tasks. To get them, just right-click on the utility shortcut and select “Run as administrator”

UltraISO program

The program has a Russian interface, which is very important - you will not just press buttons sequentially, relying on your knowledge of English, but you can thoroughly understand which process is launched after the next action with the utility.

Any user can create a bootable Windows 7 USB flash drive using the ultraiso program. You just need to follow the simple step-by-step instructions:

Run the program as administrator. Load the operating system image into the window that appears. It can be recorded in ISO, MDF or NRG format. Using the Open button or a similar item in the File menu, add it to the application work area.

The next step in creating a bootable Windows 7 flash drive is writing the image to disk. This is done by clicking on the corresponding item in the “Boot” menu.

The recording window will appear. Check that the Disk Drive line contains the name of your flash drive and its letter. The recording method should look like USB-HDD+. If all parameters are specified correctly, click the “Record” button.

A warning will appear on the screen stating that all data on the removable media will be destroyed. Continue the process of writing a bootable Windows 7 USB flash drive by confirming your intention by clicking Yes.

UNetBootin program

The main window of the program looks quite ascetic. Here you need to select Disk Image, the letter that is assigned to the removable media. The ISO image address is specified manually. After adding the image, extraction and copying of files to the flash drive begins.

Other programs for preparing a bootable Windows 7 flash drive work similarly, such as USB/DVD Download Tool, Rufus, the operation of which will be described below, etc.

Creating a bootable USB flash drive for Windows 7 is not enough - the image recorded on it still needs to be opened somehow. If the system continues to work, then this should not cause any problems. However, if nothing else starts, you will have to go into the BIOS settings.

Important note: Depending on the year of manufacture, BIOS versions vary. They also differ in appearance, but the names of menu items remain virtually unchanged.

Having opened the BIOS by pressing the Del, F2 or other key specified in the start boot window, you need to go to the Advanced BIOS Features tab. Here the devices are placed in the order they were launched. Simply put, first the system, for example, loads the CDROM, then the hard drive, then the USB-HDD.

Since we made a bootable Windows 7 flash drive, and now we want to launch it, we should put booting the USB-HDD first. To do this, press the Enter key on the first line to open a menu in which all connected devices are presented. Then select USB-HDD from the list provided. Put booting from the hard disk (HDD) in second place, and let CDROM remain in third position.

Possible problems with loading media through BIOS:

  • The motherboard simply does not support booting from an external drive (if it was designed before 2003, this is a very real reason);
  • Incorrect bootable windows 7 usb flash drive. Perhaps mistakes were made during its creation. To rule out this option, test the media on another computer where the motherboard clearly supports reading removable drives;
  • The USB controller is disabled in the BIOS.

If you are installing the system on a computer, it is recommended to immediately connect the drive through the port located directly on the motherboard, bypassing the connectors located on the front panel of the system unit.

If the UEFI interface is installed

The traditional BIOS is being replaced by UEFI - a new interface that better copes with modern hardware. Essentially, UEFI performs the same functions as BIOS, providing a pre-boot environment for the OS.

However, creating a bootable Windows 7 uefi USB flash drive is somewhat different from the usual procedure for preparing installation removable media.

There are two ways:

  • Use of software;
  • Manual drive setup.

Let's consider each option in detail.

Rufus program

Why this particular utility? It has several advantages, including being free, portable, high speed, user-friendly interface and Russian language support.

Note: the algorithm described above is also suitable for creating installation media with Windows 8.

The main program window looks like this:

As you can see, there is nothing complicated here. All fields are very clear and are usually filled in automatically. But so that the question of how to make a bootable Windows 7 flash drive using this program is studied thoroughly, let’s briefly go through the points presented in the main window:

  • The device is your flash drive on which you plan to write the operating system image;
  • Partition scheme - leave GPT with UEFI by default;
  • The file system and cluster size are also set automatically. They should not be changed;
  • The Create bootable disk field allows you to select the path to the ISO image.

After specifying and checking all the parameters, all that remains is to click Start, starting the process of copying files. The recording speed is approximately comparable to the speed of conventional copying of information to removable media.

Considering that the program creates a bootable USB flash drive, a higher figure is simply impossible.

Manual setting

If you don’t want to download Rufus or for some reason creating a bootable Windows 7 flash drive does not happen or ends with an error, internal Windows tools will come to the rescue.

Important note: the steps described are for 64-bit versions of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. Users with the 32-bit version are advised to use the software recording method listed above.

Run Command Prompt as Administrator. This can be done using the context menu, called up by right-clicking on the command line shortcut in standard Windows programs.

Enter the following lines in the window that appears:

  • diskpart;
  • list disk.

A list of connected drives will appear. Find your flash drive (you can do this by its size). Look at what number it was identified under - you will need it for further work with the media. For example, let's take number 6 (it may be different for you).

So, the order is as follows:

  1. Select disk 6 – select a specific disk with which all further manipulations will be performed;
  2. Clean – the media is cleared of data written to it;
  3. Create partition primary – a partition is created;
  4. Format fs=fat32 quick – the created partition is formatted into the FAT32 file system;
  5. Active – the section is marked as active;
  6. Assign – assigns a name or connection point;
  7. List volume – check the correctness of your actions. Pay attention to the letter that is assigned to your carrier. Remember it;
  8. Exit – exit from Diskpart.

For clarity, look at the picture - there is nothing complicated here.

After preliminary preparation, all that remains is to copy the contents of the image to the media.

Since we are making a bootable USB flash drive for Windows 7, we will have to use additional software to open the image (in the eighth version of Windows, you can mount the image directly in the system). It's good if Daemon Tools is installed on your computer. With its help, you can mount the image into a virtual drive, go into it and copy all the contents to a flash drive.

If Daemon Tools is not available, you can use the functionality of WinRAR or 7Zip archivers. To do this, you need to open the ISO image through these programs, and then unpack it directly onto a removable disk.

Conclusion

The process of burning an operating system image to a removable disk is not as complicated as it sometimes seems to novice users. The simplest option is to use Russified software, which automatically performs all preparatory activities. As a result, the ISO image of the bootable Windows 7 flash drive can only be written directly to an external drive.

Most users have problems already at the installation stage, when they have to configure the BIOS or solve some other issues with launching the installation removable media. However, if all of the above steps are performed consistently and correctly, then installing Windows 7 from a flash drive should be successful.

Windows has long occupied the leading position in the field of home computer technology. The share of 99% are cases when Microsoft OS is installed in the house where there is a computer. This article is aimed at covering in great detail the procedure of how to create a bootable USB flash drive for Windows 7, functional properties and difficulties.

Why create a bootable USB flash drive for Windows 7

Mobile technologies also do not stand still. Just 5-6 years ago everyone had regular cell phones, but today almost everyone has their own smartphone. And the vast majority are running Android OS. You can read more about how to create your account on Android.

And of course, every day more and more people are trying to make money using the Internet, there are many effective ways, but the most effective one today is traffic arbitrage. If you want to try to gain financial independence and make money on the Internet, then detailed step-by-step instructions are described in the article.

But today we will talk about more familiar things, in particular about creating a bootable flash drive. Effective mastery of a topic can only be achieved with a complete approach to the content of the question. Therefore, you first need to understand the question of the necessity of the process itself. Traditionally, all Microsoft products were shipped on disks. But often there is a need for a bootable USB flash drive, and here are the main reasons that cause this need:

  • The process of technology development is continuous. Try to remember the last time you used disks on your computer? For a computer, disks are gradually becoming an unnecessary appendage. Some computer manufacturers have completely abandoned the disk drive on some devices. And creating such a flash drive is a simple necessity.
  • Fast installation speed of Windows 7. About 10 years ago, the USB 3.0 interface appeared, which significantly reduces installation time if it is inherent in a specific media. So, installation from a Windows 7 disk will take about 20-40 minutes, and from a flash drive it’s twice as fast. Later we will reveal in detail the process of creating a flash drive that supports such an interface.
  • This is simply more convenient than storing all the necessary information on disks. One small bootable USB flash drive can fit Windows 7, leaving room for other programs your computer needs.

It’s worth mentioning one more thing: you can create not only a flash drive, but also an SD card, but not all laptops and computers will be able to accept them; this entirely depends on the device on which the system will be installed.

An easy way to create a bootable USB flash drive

This subsection of the article will reveal the essence of two methods that will help you create a bootable USB flash drive for Windows 7. Both of them are quite simple, but the first is characterized by greater stability of the software. What is needed for this:

  • Disk image. You can download it using the Internet on any torrent tracker. If you want a “clean” system, you can make an image from a disk, but we will describe this process a little later in the article.
  • UltraISO software. The free version does not allow you to work with images larger than 300 megabytes, so you need to purchase a licensed version for 1,400 rubles or download a hacked one.
  • Flash drive with a capacity of 8 gigabytes or more. It is recommended to format it using the NTFS file system before starting work. If you do not perform this procedure yourself, UltraISO will automatically perform this action for you. Therefore, you first need to make sure that there are no important files or information on the media.

Let's take a step-by-step look at how to create a bootable USB flash drive for Windows 7:

  1. Launch the UltraISO program. This must be done on behalf of the administrator.

  1. Open the file tab located on the left. Here you need to specify the path to the image intended for transfer to a bootable USB flash drive. The image creation process will be described in more detail below.

  1. The image is ready. Now we indicate the path to the flash drive intended for creating the image. You need to select “Boot”, then “Burn Hard Disk Image”. Next, in the Disk Drive area, you need to select the required flash drive.

  1. Click record. Here the system will notify you that the data has been deleted. The process of creating a flash drive has begun.

This is how, with four simple steps, you can easily create the media we need.

Create a bootable USB flash drive for Windows 7 using the official Microsoft program

If some reasons prevent you from using UltraISO, for example, you don’t like to purchase software from government enterprises, and you can only use licensed software, you can use a free utility - USB DVD Download Tool. Installing Windows 7 from a bootable USB 3.0 flash drive is an important preparation step

Creating a bootable USB flash drive, as we have already found out, is quite simple, but then serious problems can begin. One of which is the lack of support for the required USB in the Windows 7 bootloader. The problem can be solved in a simple way - by plugging a flash drive into a USB 2.0 port. However, this move will not always help solve the problem in this way. But the presence of another method that allows you to solve this issue with a completely different approach.

To begin with, it’s worth saying that on media and on computers, USB 3.0 ports are marked in blue or light blue, so you won’t confuse them with others. Let's look at detailed instructions on how to install Windows 7:

  • You need to download drivers for the motherboard of your device that are responsible for supporting such USB. You can download them from the manufacturer's website. They are always available for free. Be sure to unzip them. Be sure to make sure that the files are in .inf format.
  • The next step is to create a winpe folder. Then you need to create a usb3 folder and a mount folder inside it. For convenience, this is best done in the root directory of drive D, since then we will have to enter some of the commands manually.
  • Place the unzipped drivers in the usb3 folder.
  • You should already have created a bootable USB flash drive by following the instructions above. Then in it you need to go to the sources folder, where you can then find the boot.wim file. It needs to be duplicated in the winpe folder.
  • Then we launch the command line (the Win+R key combination will help open a window where you need to enter cmd). In the Command Line we indicate the path to the winpe folder, this is done like this: we write cd /d the path to the folder, in our example we get cd /d D:\winpe, press enter.
  • Then you need to write three commands, pressing enter after each: They need to be written in strict sequence. Thus, we write the drivers for the required USB into the bootloader.
  • After that, copy boot.wim from winpe back to sources. When prompted to replace, click yes.

Now your bootable flash drive can work with USB 3.0.
